Oh I dunno, I was thinking Moore might miss the top 10 myself despite probably being one of the most seen directors.

Maybe Exit Through The Gift Shop will ride its wave to number 1...

Docs is my favorite genre and the one where I pretty like/love them all. This list will make me happy no matter what.

I've seen about 10 films on this list, so I'm not qualified to speak on it's overall quality, yet I am very happy for the #1 pick. It really is the documentary to end all other documentaries.

I certainly will be using this list to check out other documentaries that jump out to me. Which means just about all the ones that don't involve bands or politics. I should maybe end up with about 10 after that.  ;D

If something in the results irritates you, remember, it is probably my fault.

Also too, I've seen 72 of the films on the top-100. A lot of the music/movie about movies ones will continue to be skipped.

Should've known the Holocaust would win.  Holocaust docs always win.

It's more than just a holocaust documentary. While the subject matter certainly does factor into why it works so well, I think it's also a film that is an honest examination of the limits of the documentary medium, while also pushing the edge of the medium.

I was most struck by some of the low scores, especially on...

For All Mankind
The House Is Black
Jesus Camp
Encounters at the End of the World
My Kid Could Paint That
Baraka
Crumb
Capturing the Friedmans
American Movie
Salesman
F for Fake
Harlan County USA
Man With a Movie Camera
Hoop Dreams

Who are you people who hate good movies?  Were some of you rating on a 5-point scale instead of a 10-point scale?

I'm just really, really happy that Exit Through the Gift Shop didn't take the #1 spot.  I like the movie, but it's way overhyped at this point.

Oh, and I've seen 74  of the top 100.  Highest not seen: #17, The Up Series (it's been on my todo list for a long time).

Happy with Night and Fog winning, but I'm shocked with how high/low some films are.  Glad to see my hobby horse made it into the top 100, from me being the only person to have seen it at the nomination stage.  :)

Thanks Bondo and pix for the amazing job you've done on this.

Let me know what kind of stats you're all interested in. I'll see what I can put together.

As I said in chat, I hope that, over multiple iterations of this list, we'll work towards a Top 100 where every film has a raw average of at least 7.00. If we'd apply that standard to this list, these lesser seen films would have made the cut:

Welfare
Primary
The Weather Underground
The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On
La Soufrière
Children Underground
Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment
Eyes on the Prize
Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country
Shut Up & Sing
Deep Water
The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes
Paris Is Burning
Scratch
The Battle of Chile
Public Housing
Near Death

And these films would have dropped out:

Anvil! The Story of Anvil
This Film Is Not Yet Rated
Super Size Me
Encounters at the End of the World
Gates of Heaven
The Last Waltz
Jesus Camp
Restrepo
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room
Catfish
An Inconvenient Truth
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father
24 City
Fahrenheit 9/11
La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet
Trekkies
My Best Fiend: Klaus Kinski

Some interesting tradeoffs, there.

Should've known the Holocaust would win.  Holocaust docs always win.

...making the absence of The Sorrow and the Pity from the shortlist even more odd.

Here are the films that were in the Top 100 in the shortlist voting but didn't make the final Top 100:

101. The Two Escobars (Shortlist Rank: 90)
102. Welfare (Shortlist Rank: 71)
104. No End in Sight (Shortlist Rank: 89)
107. Fast, Cheap & Out of Control (Shortlist Rank: 83)
108. The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (Shortlist Rank: 90)
109. La Soufrière (Shortlist Rank: 96)
110. The Corporation (Shortlist Rank: 68)
111. Children Underground (Shortlist Rank: 75)
112. Bigger Stronger Faster* (Shortlist Rank: 64)
114. Eyes on the Prize (Shortlist Rank: 93)
117. Jackass: The Movie (Shortlist Rank: 86)
120. The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner (Shortlist Rank: 98)
121. The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes (Shortlist Rank: 72)
123. Paris Is Burning (Shortlist Rank: 66)
125. The Aristocrats (Shortlist Rank: 46)
133. Religulous (Shortlist Rank: 59)
141. Land of Silence and Darkness (Shortlist Rank: 96)
144. Vernon, Florida (Shortlist Rank: 84)
145. Looking for Richard (Shortlist Rank: 87)
148. At the Death House Door (Shortlist Rank: 90)
154. Night Mail (Shortlist Rank: 56)
165. Daguerréotypes (Shortlist Rank: 99)

I'm saddest about Welfare, Eyes on the Prize, Children Underground, The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes, and Paris Is Burning.

The Sorrow and the Pity is barely about the Holocaust.  As I recall, it's almost entirely about France during the war, the fascists and the Resistance.

Hotel Terminus and Shoah though. . .

Oh yeah, good point. I should have said Hotel Terminus. It was on my shortlist, but I don't think anybody else voted for it. (The Sorrow and the Pity only did slightly better, getting just two votes.)

Bondo (inadvertently[?]) pushed Night and Fog into the top position. He is nothing less than a towering genius.

I did like Night and Fog but I wasn't gaming it, I really just don't like Hoop Dreams. So boring. I also hate the sport of basketball. Of Martin's list I can only take credit for four:
The House Is Black
Crumb
Man With A Movie Camera
Hoop Dreams

pix, I'd watch the ones you were saddest about falling off the list to get them another vote, but based on the whole Children Underground experience I'm not sure it would help. More people should watch Children Underground to weaken the impact of my vote. I do plan on watching more Wiseman over the next year.

I'm most disconcerted by the tenuous position of Super Size Me and Dear Zachary in the top-100. These are top-5 docs for me and it would be pretty bitter to have them drop out. My other top docs (Bowling For Columbine, Harvey Milk, Fog of War) are solidly positioned and A Time For Burning will hopefully only move up as more people see it.

Thanks for all the hard work, Bondo and pix. I wish I had been there for more of chat last night.

I'm gonna MDC the heck out of Welfare, Primary, Children Underground, and Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment to get them on next year. Considering how a lot of the films on the current list are probably the most seen docs, I have to assume exposure is the key!

Oh, and I'm glad Ted Baryluk's didn't make it. You philistines don't deserve him.

Lists!

Just curious, how'd you break the tie between Nanook & Little Deiter? The score and average are identical.

Ties (there were a small handful of them) were broken based on the shortlist voting. Dieter scored 75 there, to Nanook's 51.

Great List.

Biggest Surprise - How high up Planet Earth landed.

Biggest Disappointment - Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills only got to 49. Easily belongs among the Top 30.

So how'd you all like this system of voting? Do you think the final results are a more accurate representation of our collective Top 100 list than the shortlist results would have been?

Also, do you like having the fixed shortlist to focus on when trying to catch up with things?

The assigning scores worked better than I would have thought, though I suspect I should have rated the films amongst themselves, rather than amongst all of film.  That would have resulted in more 10s and 1s for the films I liked and didn't like, giving my own votes more value.

With so few people seeing many of the films, it's difficult.  Dropping the high and low scores would solve for The Bondo Effect.  But in many cases you'd be left with only a handful of votes for some films, inflating even more the scores for the recent mainstream films more people have seen.  I don't have a solution for that.

More people doing this would also solve the Me Effect.

It might exaggerate it, I'd think.

Yes, but it would be an everyone effect so I wouldn't have to take it personally. ;)

I'm going to try and remain as in the dark as possible about how the voting works and just pretend it's some magic formula that finds the truth.

ps. I liked it.

I like the mechanics of using the shortlist, although it took a lot away from the suspense.

So Hoop Dreams didn't win solely because just one person (possibly with an odd, misplaced grudge... naming no names) gave it a 2?

You guys!  ::)

Haven't seen it yet, but Night and Fog is probably better...

Night and Fog has a higher unweighted average, even if my Hoop Dreams vote is excluded.
