Title: Favorite Alcoholic Drink?
Post by: Totoro on September 26, 2011, 03:06:09 AM
Come on, I know most of you are over 21, tell me what kind of stuff you drink! I'm very naive when it comes to alcohol. I've been wanting to expand my knowledge. What mixed drinks would you recommend? Or beer? Wine? Let's talk about alcohol.

I drink some mixed drinks. I'm not a big fan of beer, but am willing to keep trying it until I find one I like. I love vodka.

Cider is life. Apple, pear, I once even had boysenberry wine cider (which was odd, but wonderful).

Gin and Tonics in the summertime are wonderful. I have a bottle of Hendrick's waiting for some nicer weather.

Jameson on the rocks has a charm I adore.

I have been a fan of wine in the past, but have not had any in ages. It's something I need to rectify. Red is preferred to white. The best I ever had was a late-picked zinfandel from a local winery - soft and dark and subtle, with just a touch of sweetness.

I don't think with beer it is a matter of finding the right one. They all taste pretty bad until one day they don't (except IPAs, they still taste bad).

Anyway
Favorite Beer: Ayinger Celebrator (http://en.ayinger-bier.de/?pid=118)

Favorite Wine: Pinot Noir, generally speaking.

Special mention to New Age White (http://www.quintessentialwines.com/Shop-Our-Wineries/Valentin-Bianchi/New-Age), this is an Argentinian white sparkling blend with heavy citrus notes that can almost function in the place of a margarita. Very light and refreshing in the summer. Very low alcohol content for a wine which explains its sweetness.

Favorite Shot: Buttery Nipple (Butterscotch Schnapps and Bailey's Irish Creme)...was my first shot actually and I will not be judged for it.

Also SoCo and lime.

Mixed drinks: Caipirinha, this Brazilian drink based on cachaca, it like a very high quality marg when made right (or when made by me the one and only time I've had it when a friend brought a single-serving bottle of cachaca back from Brazil with her for my birthday.)

Chai Thai - A drink of my own creation, a variation on the white russian that uses chai alongside the vodka and Kahlua. Given the drink's caffeine content, great for late nights in the computer lab at school running regressions for a term paper.

Coconut Rum and Coke - an old favorite, I just love coconut rum.

Amaretto sour.

Or if I'm at Senor Tadpole's, anything I can have made in my mouth.

I don't drink much these days (discovered in college that I'm a lousy, miserable drunk) but I enjoy a screwdriver or a rum and coke.  Beer can be pretty good, too.

Wine: While I secretly wish I was more into French wine, I must admit that I generally find them too harsh, having to much of tannines. So generally I prefer wines from South Africa, Australia and US. Shiraz and Zinfandel are good, reliable grapes.

Spirits: Calvados is quite delicious. I've also learned to appreciate single malt, as long as it's not too smokey.

Drinks: For how plain and boring it is, gin and bitter lemon is my favorite.

Favorite beer: Basically any Belgian Trappist ale. They're sweet with a great mouthfeel and pack an alcoholic punch (usually 8-11%). Rochefort 10 is my favorite--but it's $7 a bottle. Gulden Draak is a close second and much cheaper at $3 a bottle.

Favorite spirits: Tough call. I like good bourbon--Old Rip Van Winkle 12 year "Lot B" for the special occasions (since it's $55) and Buffalo Trace or Maker's Mark for mixing and guiltless pouring. I also like good absinthe--Delaware Phoenix out of New York makes some amazing stuff.

Favorite mixed drinks:
Sazerac--rye whiskey and Peychaud's Bitters in an absinthe coated glass
Gin and tonic

Try sake too if you can get it in your area. I like it more than wine. Just stay away from anything made in Oregon (stick with Japanese brewed) and avoid Gekkeikan (it's the Bacardi of sake i.e., pretty bad).

Not a huge fan of vodka because its purpose: to be transparent in a mixed drink. I got tired of rum and cokes and screwdrivers because that's all my friends drink. I like trying unusual stuff. That adventurousness has yielded some new favorites, like Norwegian Akvavit, and new hated spirits, like Brazilian Cachaca (I probably need to try some good Cachaca though to administer a final judgement).

Calvados is pretty awesome. I wish we had more brands here in the US. What are your favorites?

Sadly enough I couldn't name them right away. Most of the calvados I've had, have been bottles I've gotten as a gift from a French friend. Different sort every time. The assortment in my own country is usually very small so you'll just buy whatever they have in stock.

We get Calvados when we go over to Normandy since every Normandy recipe has calvados and cider in it. One good one is rabbit in cider and calvados and apple.

Gin- Menorcan gin is that deadly combination of cheap and strong.
Beefeater gin and Plymouth Gin are nice.
As I get older the quintessential English drink; Gin & Tonic becomes more of a favourite.

Vodka- Seabreezes; VOdka, Grapefruit and Cranberry will put hairs on your chest

Single Malts- MacCallan and Talisker are great. Had a Glaswegian workmate who did a whiskey tasting for us one night. Long night. Always a Christmas treat far too Expensive otherwise.

Had a dessert consisting of pineapple sorbet with Cuban rum poured over it the other night. That worked!

I mostly just get a rum and coke. Easy and tasty and I can pretend I'm a pirate.

However, in college we invented the best drink. Blueberry vodka and cherry coke makes Blerry Coke and it is the sweetest drink you'll ever have. Like candy. It was my Spring Weekend drink of choice.

I like no beers.

Stick on wedge in lime in that, Junior, and you have a Cuba Libre.  Pronounce it with a Spanish accent and you'll sound like a freedom fighter!

Cranberry Juice and Vodka with lime is a Cape Cod.  I actually like the name more than the drink, but I manage to tolerate it. ;)

This sounds like a drink I made once with German Raspberry brandy (Himbeergeist) and Coke. Tasted like a blueberry ICEE.

I like no beers.

Eh, that might change, considering that our palates change every 5-7 years. Plus, you have to get adventurous to find appealing beers. If I had stuck with my friends' beer recommendations (basically IPAs, Miller Light and intensely bitter stuff) I would have considered all beer terrible.

But ordering cape cods rather than cranberry vodkas is treacherous because a lot of people don't know that that's a cape cod. I once was ordering a cape cod from across the table in a noisy restaurant and she said back what I thought was cape cod as a confirmation but I ended up getting Tecate. Worse yet, it wasn't on happy hour. Oh well, Tecate isn't terrible.

Ooooh, love a glass of port.

I have about half a bottle left that is a 1982 vintage, bottled in 1988, stored until my 21st birthday in 2010, and slowly consumed since. It is quite wonderful indeed.

I'm partial to any Nigori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigori) style sake. It makes me feel like I'm drinking it with Mifune.  ;)

For beer, the best I've ever had in a bottle is Maudite (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/33), out of Quebec. It's not a beer to drink when you're in the mound to pound a few, it's more for having with good food.

I had a bottle in my refrigerator one time, that I forgot about in the back. It was in there for close to two years. When I cracked it open, it had aged like a fine wine. I now buy the 4 packs and date one of the four bottles and bury it in the back to let it age.

For wine, I tend to like the sweeter varietals such as Tawny Port, Madeira, Gewurtztraminer, Riesling and the three levels of Auslese.

For a shot, I've been known to be an eradicator of many bottles of Jagermeister. I don't know why, but I love the stuff. Always keep a couple of bottles in my downstairs freezer.

And finally, for a mixed drink, my favorite is a Dark and Stormy (http://www.goslingsrum.com/recipe_detail.asp?RecipeID=192). Cool, refreshing and has the kick of a Jamaican mule.

Nigori can be amazing. It can be extremely sweet though. I usually go for junmai ginjo (not too expensive).

I'd love to try unpasteurized, undiluted (around 20% alcohol compared to the normal 15-17%) nigori sake. Some vendors sell it online, but they require that you choose 1 day shipping, since it can spoil easily. And that tacks on a $20-40 shipping fee.

love Unibroue, Ephemere (apple beer), Trios Pistoles, Chambly - all fantastic.  Flying Fish's Exit 4 (American Trippel) is another amazing brew.  Recently loving Belgian sours as well - lambics, oud bruins, geuzes - went to Cantillon's Zwanze Day 2011  (http://www.cantillon.be/br/3_21)at Monk's here in Philly and sampled the 2011, 2010 and 2009 versions... YUM!

Also been getting into making cocktails... in fact I just created a signature drink for my old roommates wedding this past Sunday!  It was a fall theme wedding and they loved this:

It's 1 oz Rye (Irish Whiskey is acceptable, DON"T use bourbon, its too sweet), 1/2 oz Apricot Brandy, 3 oz Apple cider and a dash of cinnamon.  Shake all ingredients over ice and strain over a cinnamon stick into an up glass.

I was actually asked by the grooms aunt (who'd had 3 to that point) if I was trained, you know if I was a cocktologist...

Just finished brewing my first batch of beer as well, wasn't bad - tasted like it should, generic english bitter.

Love Trois Pistoles, but didn't care for Blanche de Chambly. Never been a big fan of Belgian Whites. But a friend of mine on another forum gave me a French Canadian recipe for ham, which with 100% pure maple syrup, is simmered in a slow cooker. It really sounds good, but I haven't been able to make it yet because I don't want to buy a whole case of the stuff.

I'm more of a porter and stout lover. I like my beers to be bold.

Beer and grape wine are not for me, but I do love a sweet mixed drink.

For classics try
Tequila Sunrise - Tequila, Orange Juice and Grenadine
Gin and Tonic with a squeeze of lemon or lime (mix the drink the take 2 small wedges of either squeeze them into the drink and drop the wedges in as well), I am a Bombay Saphire fan for the gin

My lemonade (7-up for north Americans) mixers, basically these drink go well with lemonade
Honey Vodka
Sloe Gin

For a creamy cocktail try
Grasshopper - equal parts Creme de menthe, Creme de Cacao and Double cream, shaken together with ice.

Or for a strong drink, try
Green Dragon - 2 parts Vodka, 1 part Green Chartreuse, shaken with ice

For a very strong drink, try
Absinthe cocktail - 2 parts absinthe, 2 parts still mineral water, a dash of sugar syrup and a dash of Angostura bitters, again shake with ice and beware.

The other direction for drinking is aperitifs, such as
Frangelico, a hazelnut liqueur
Amaretto, an almond liqueur
Lemoncello, lemon flavoured

Going Asian, try
a Cloudy Sake, often drunk cold
Sake, drunk warm
Plum wine

If you are going to get right into cocktails trying to make lots of different ones at home, you will need a large (like 50+ different) selection of liqueurs and other alcoholic drinks. For a less varied attempt I would recommend some basic spirits (vodka, white and dark rum, gin, bourbon/whisky) and several different liqueurs (triple sec, midori, creme de menthe, a nut flavoured liqueur) and some random others based on cocktails you like. You will also need non-alcoholic mixers Angostura Bitter, Grenadine are 2 to always have around.

So there is some suggestion to punish your wallet and liver, enjoy.

Wine...

Mostly enjoy California style cabs and zins and Australian cabs and shiraz.  but the Cali wines are too expensive here so I don't have them often, only when I can bring back a case from the US

I enjoy beer but I try not to drink it too often.  Mostly those would be Japanese, Singapore, or Thai beers.  Though Bondo is wrong on the IPAs, those are always good

An occasionally single malt scotch if playing cards with friends.

I do not really drink cocktails but if you ever hit Singapore, you should go to Morton's bar (part of the famous steakhouse chain).  At happy hour, the steak sandwiches are free and they have great martinis.  It may sound a bit girly but the Lyche Martini is great.

What Your "Drink" Says About You on a Date (http://www.thedailymeal.com/what-your-drink-says-about-you-date/coument/reply/12?utm_source=Outbrain#ixzz1Zjf0esgV)

What you order on a date can definitely send a signal, whether or not it's one you're conscious of. Sure, the list below is mainly full of generalizations, but there's some truth to every stereotype...

Martini: If you're a guy, you're trying to impress (and it's probably working). If you're a girl drinking a dirty martini, you're a hot mess: the dirtier, the messier, the hotter.

Vodka on the Rocks: Too self-conscious to actually order a martini.

White Russian: Obsessed with The Big Lebowski, and probably The Daily Show. Or, you just like to drink dessert.

Bud Light: You're easy going, laid back, and at home at a sports bar. If you're a girl, you know how to hang with the guys.

Stella Artois: You have no particular knowledge or affinity towards beer so you just order "Stella" cause it's familiar.

Lillet/Campari/Aperol: You're twee, and possibly like to throw around words like "mixology."

Vodka Cranberry: When in doubt, you stick to what you drank in college.

White wine: You're definitely a woman. You're possibly a little uptight.

Prosecco: You're often a little uptight, but tonight you're looking to party.

Whiskey, neat: You're hot. Regardless of gender.

Jäger: Secretly wishing you were hanging out with your buddies.

Vodka Gimlet: You're a huge dork, but you hope sort of in a cool way?

Appletini: You've left the kids with a sitter and you're ready to have fun!

Pimm's Cup: You're an Anglophile.

Old-Fashioned: Mad Men is your favorite show — you either want to be, or sleep with, Don Draper.

Margarita, on the rocks: You've decided to have a good time tonight.

Margarita, frozen: You're in Cabo.

PBR: You're drinking quickly on your way to a non-profit fundraiser, followed by a poetry reading in a former industrial warehouse.

Tequila Shots: You're either getting laid, or just getting through it.

Long Island Iced Tea: You have a drinking problem.

A beer, while at a cocktail bar: Overprotective of your manhood or unadventurous.

A cocktail, while at a dive bar: Insufferable.

Guinness

Stella/Peroni/Leffe Blonde/Hoegarden etc

Red Wine, mostly cabs not more than £10 a bottle.

Went through a stage at Uni when traditional ales & bitter was my thing, but not any more.
Very rarely indulge in the spirits, if so it's a Port & Brandy.

So I don't cook but your food creations are inspiring so...

Bottled #homebrew #3 this eve!  First partial grain brew was a Winter Warmer with malted barley(s), hops, honey, vanilla bean, cinnamon sticks & fresh ground nutmeg...  can't stand the wait to taste!

also, 2 blended concoctions and a syrup, created this weekend that turned out fantastic:

 - Frozen Pomegranate Mojito (Serves 8 )-
1 cup white rum
2 oz Pama (pomegranate liqueur)
juice if 6 limes
1/3 cup of simple sugar
20 mint leaves
 - Blend w/ ice & serve in an cocktail glass with a mint sprig

 - Caffè Ubriaco (serves 6) -
2 oz Starbucks (coffee liqueur)
2 oz Van Gogh Double Espresso Vodka
2 oz Bailey's Irish Cream
3/4 cup milk (2%)
1 cup coffee ice cream
1 tablespoon coarse ground coffee beans
 - Blend w/ ice till the consistency is like a malted milkshake, serve in an irish coffee mug, top w/ whipped cream & a chocolate covered espresso bean.

note... the garnishes are an assumption of what would look and taste great, i usually don't find myself in formal garnishing setting.

 - Cinnamon and Amaretto Syrup -
2 cups water
2 cups sugar
2 oz amaretto
5 cinnamon sticks
 - combine all ingredients (less water for thicker syrup) and bring to a boil.  Turn heat to low and let simmer for 10-15 minutes.  Let cool.  Pour over banana pancakes (Whomever is making you the real food that morning will appreciate it!)

I did all my drinking in college... eventually learned I was a miserable drunk and cut myself off.  During that time, though, mostly what I drank was:

cheap beer
rum (usually Captain Morgan or Malibu) & coke
Schnapps
wine/champagne/horrible fortified wines
screwdrivers

Out of those, I'd say my favorite is the rum & coke.  I tried tequila, Jack Daniels, and a gin & tonic once (once each, that is, not all together!) and didn't like any of them.

Every now and then I think "I'd like a beer" but the moment always passes.

Real men don't add sugar!! 8)

It sounds like I'm along way from the perfect Mojito. I have a solution! Go down the pub!

don't tell a cuban that!  muddleing the mint with sugar adds friction and helps to release more of the oils.  Of course the pub is always a fine solution!

what I drank was:

cheap beer
rum (usually Captain Morgan or Malibu) & coke
Schnapps
wine/champagne/horrible fortified wines
screwdrivers

Well, maybe, but I don't think it's the quality of the alcohol as much as all my buried self-loathing that comes to surface when I imbibe it.  I may occasionally have a drink, but I'll never get drunk again... it's a bad time for everyone.

Hot Buttered Rum

1 small slice butter
1 teaspoon brown sugar
cinnamon
nutmeg
vanilla extract
30ml dark rum
boiling water

Mix butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla until creamed. Place one teaspoon into a serving glass, pour dark rum and boiling water into serving glass and mix well.

We had this last weekend as part of a cocktail party, strong but quiet nice (possibly should have used a better quality rum).

The thing is that both Tequila and I are Bavarian (or live there), so we may not be the best people to ask.

All I can say for myself is that I have never had a DAB in my life, but then I am never in that part of the country. Here in Munich, you'd have to go to specialised "we have 111 varieties of beer"-bars in order to get a DAB on a night out. And I don't usually buy 'foreign' beer for home consumption either (I simply like my Bavarian Helles and Dunkles too much).

My guess is that German people in the Ruhr area do drink it, though.

They are thick complex dark beers with a very heavy aroma. They tend to have a taste of charred wood mixed with chocolate and other delicious ingredients.

The reason why I love these type of beer so much is because they compliment red meat so well.

Alaskan Smoked Porter's are extremely hard to get your hands on but if you are actually interested in trying a smoked beer at one point you should check out:

Wow, what enthusiasm about a drink that I personally find kind of mediocre! Here most ciders are like that and are referred to as "girl cider". Easy to drink and get drunk on, but really just too sweet. It's like a soft drink with a bit of alcohol in it.

Every time I go to UK I'm baffled at how successful this label seems to be over there. They must have done some massive marketing. Personally - and more and more in Sweden with me I dare say) I prefer the dry versions you get from France and Britain, which are closer to wine, wonderful to drink chilled in the summer.

Maybe it's not marketing, but different tastes appeal to different people.  As far as I know, that brand is not marketed in AUS at all.  It's on the shelf and word-of-mouth sells it.  Also I'm not a fool for marketing and I never drink to "get drunk" and I don't care what other people call the drinks I enjoy.
Title: Re: Favorite Alcoholic Drink?
Post by: Lobby on December 04, 2012, 10:39:40 AM
I didn't mean to be insulting, in that case I apologize. Of course we're all entitled to different tastes! I just tried to convey how this brand is regarded in Sweden. It's got an aura of being what gf:s have at the pub while the guys have beer.

I think I've read somewhere about this particular brand, Kopparberg, working tremendously hard to establishing themselves in UK and it seems if they have succeded. I reckon it's more a mouth-to-mouth thing in AUS.

They've done a decent job of it over here. Most off-licenses that sell any cider will sell Kopparberg.

You may be right about the gender divide in pub drinking, Lobby, but if you're in college and at a house parties, those norms tend to go out the window. Even canned beers which can taste good in a pub, such as Guinness, are just watered down and bitter, so if you're going for a non-spirited alcoholic drink which tastes good, you'd settle on a cider, and so it's very common to see males drink ciders if they're willing to spend a bit more for something tasty. It's more alcopops which tend to be marginalised as being, to put it crudely, "just for girls", and even then I rarely see women drinking alcopops.

Never heard of this Koppar stuff. This from cider central UK. They seem to be territory marketing using Sun Tzu methods (he say do not attack enemy where it is strongest; cider= SW England- there's a boat/barge/bar in Bristol that serves distilled nitro in the guise of a very sweet cider)

Porters, stouts

Wine with food or whenever, usually red, but I don't claim to be an expert

Rye in cocktails; gin in cocktails (rather than bourbon/vodka)

Tequila in margaritas or with almost any mixer

Single-malt Scotch (smoky is good; Islay produces most of my favorites), though my go-to bar crutch is blended Johnnie Walker Black, because I've convinced myself that I've developed an adequate tolerance to it. Plus, it goes well with cigars.

I'm a sucker for interesting-sounding cocktail recipes. As a result, my liquor cabinet is overflowing with various flavors of bitters, aperitifs, liqueurs, and spirits.

The first step is to admit you have a problem.

yeah, pretty much any cocktail with champagne in it. From the traditional Mimosa, Bellini (technically, prosecco) and Kir Royal to more complex crafted cocktails. Its actually getting to be a popular sub in Mojitos instead of seltzer. Had a really good one called a Starry Night at a bar a couple weeks ago - Champagne, St. Germain, Chambord Vodka, Lime.

I love Belgian beers (all of them), red wines (lot of stuff from Italy and France), Cognac (Otard XO and Napoleon) and rum (El Dorado 15 years).

Except for Hoegaarden, correct?

needless to say when I say Belgian beer I mean trappist and abbey beers.

I've recently found a small vineyard off the beaten track that specializes in chilli wine. It sounds a little crazy but the wines are amazing, I'm especially fond of the chilli tarrango which has a bit of a kick to it. They also produce a delicious rhubarb wine.

I have just been testing out a new spiced rum. My wife introduced me to Captain Morgans Original Spiced Rum, which is lovely mixed with lemonade (7-Up to those in the USA). Bacardi have recently brought out Oakheart a spiced rum, so we decided to buy a bottle and give it a try.

Well the Bacardi is much more like a Bourbon, very much a sweet molasses smell, while the Captain Morgans has a much smoother smell. The tasting followed the same line, the Bacardi was sweeter and less smooth. So it looks like we will be sticking with the Captain Morgans.

I'm not a margarita lover, but I like a good one.  Well, I found a little margarita secret in Santa Fe.  In dining rooms with only a beer/wine license, they are making an agave wine margarita and it is delicious.  Also, marvelously easy to make, if you can find the agave wine, of course.  I haven't searched for it, so I don't know how difficult it may be to locate.

Agave Wine Margarita
1 part Agave Wine
1 part Margarita Mix
Salt the rim of the glass and pour over ice.

Not really a fall drink, but in the hot summer it will be amazing!

Patrón XO

Coffee Tequila liqueur. Anyone tried this? Strikes me as being popular in Texas/ Arizona.

Was talking to the manager of this Cuban bar about cocktails, and he mentioned one made with XO and Butternut Squash. So he poured me a mouthful of this stuff, because he couldn't describe what it was properly. Just amazing. Most of the cocktails you make with it are of the coffee and (heavy/ double) cream variety. Any suggestions? I might wig out with this over Christmas. 30 quid a bottle here.

Not sure if it is my favorite, but this apple moonshine is pretty exceptional.

In non-favorites, I'm finding more and more that Sam Adams products are actually quite disappointing. Once upon a time I thought differently, but now I've become more sophisticated.

I thought similar on Sam Adams but really miss Sierra Nevada beer especially their IPA if lucky enough to find it.

I'm not a big hops fan and Sierra Nevada's IPA is very hoppy, as could be expected. Last week I tasted a black IPA (well, I'd had it before) and a white IPA that balance the hop flavors with coffee and fruit notes respectively in very nice ways.

But yeah, a while back I had a Sam Adams pumpkin beer that was probably my least favorite of the 10-15 pumpkins I had during the season, tonight it was their Double Bock, again, usually a style I appreciate. It was just poor. And these are specialty line beers from them, not cheap. Need to learn my lesson already.

Haha, look at the ABV ratings for some of those beers. The strongest beer I ever had was called 'Roger & Out' at the 'Frog & Parrot' pub in Sheffield. That had an ABV rating of 12.9 I think and was served in 1/3 of a pint glass and you got a certificate for each completed glass.

I'd be interested to know what the stronger beers taste like, from my recollection 'Roger & Out' tasted very sugary and treacly, not really all that nice.

The imperial stout can be a thing of beauty. The Utopias in particular is indeed a deep brown thick molasses like syrup on the sweet side but not cloyingly. Its rounded out by years in various barrels (its a blended brew with portions aged in Scotch, Cognac and Port casks) that impart a complex flavor profile - vanilla, caramel, oak, currants, prunes, smoke... and of course a healthy burn to be expected from the ABV. Others on the list slide more toward the bourbon-y side of things - an american thing.

An American barley-wine on the other hand often tastes more like toffee with some earthy spice hops in the mix (American, in general = stronger hop profile when discussing beer... except for "American Adjunct Lager" which refers to the shit that comes out of Golden, Milwaukee and St. Louis among other places.) Its sweet (a lot of malt is needed to get that high an ABV) with toffee and cherry notes and either grassy, musty or spicy depending on the hops used.

Mad Elf is a holiday release from a brewery that I get a 1/6 keg of every year. Its a clear and deep ruby color and made with a lot of malt, honey and cherries and fermented with a spice imparting yeast. Its like drinking christmas dessert!

The wild and sour ales are a different beast all together with some combination of brettanomyces, lactobacillus and/or  pediococcus to impart sour and tart flavors. A Belgian creation and called wild because are ferment in open tanks or even thin slabs so that these wild yeasts and bacteria can settle into the brew from the nearby farms and orchards (well, its more controlled now-a-days). You often see a lot of fruitier flavors in these but can also vary from mild and refeshingly tart to a supper-pucker sour that coats your mouth for days (Birrificio Del Ducato's My Blueberry Nightmare for instance).

If I could suggest - pop into the new BrewDog Bar set to open in the Spring in Sheffield - they will likely carry a strong array of international craft brews with some great flavors to try.

I'm assuming this is basically the new What Are You Drinking? thread, only specific to alcohol.

Started the evening off with a Strawberry Moonshine Margarita (in a mason jar natch).

Now Rogue's Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel Raspberry and Chocolate Ale. Fascinating if not entirely refreshing flavor, definitely a bit salty with the Pretzel aspect. Wish I had the VD Bacon Maple Ale that Keith tried though.

So I went to Winnipeg Wine Festival last night.

My prior experience with port was communion and a $5 bottle I picked up that was so hideous my roommate and I would do a shot of it a day just to get it down. However, trying some high quality ports, a couple even $50+ per bottle, I found them to be downright heavenly. I ended up picking up a bottle of a 20 year aged port that has strong maple flavoring. Now I have to be diligent to save it for the right moments because I can't afford this as a regular habit.

Also tried a few Asti's and they are quite tasty. Thankfully the very good stuff I was drinking of this is only $15 per bottle so much more practical. Basically I've almost completely given up on traditional reds at this point. I'm all sparkling, dessert and other sweet wines like Rieslings. All very nice with summer coming.

Now I have to be diligent to save it for the right moments because I can't afford this as a regular habit.

Hard to save for the right moments as it is not really good for keeping after it is opened.  Keep it for the right moment but than consume the rest with a short period of time afterwards.

http://www.fortheloveofport.com/faqs/
This varies tremendously as there are no absolutes, and there are a lot of different theories depending on which expert you listen to.  A rough but simple rule of thumb:  any Port with a driven cork (you need a corkscrew to extract it) should be consumed within a day or two to enjoy it at its finest, but any Port with a T-stopper type cork (can be removed by hand and easily replaced in the bottle) can generally be kept, securely re-corked in the fridge or a cellar, for a few weeks without significant deterioration.  Below you will find more specific recommendations for each style of Port.

I find them a bit too sweet though I am sure there are different types that I could try to find one more to my liking.  But I only occasionally try one if somebody has brought a bottle to a dinner party.

Recently tried a Raspberry wine from Korea.  It is pretty good, not too sweet or strong.  Thought it would be more a drink for ladies but  I am told that it is "suppose to be good for the man."

Bondo, if you're into stickies (as sweet wines are called in Australia), then don't neglect your connection to Canada and buy some ice wine there, especially ice wine from the Inniskillin winery. (http://www.inniskillin.com/)  We bought our first ice wine there, home of North American ice wines and fell in love immediately.  We're traveling back through the region this summer to have that experience once again.  More info on ice wines of Canada. I wish I had tried the 30 YO Glenfiddich much earlier and not at the end of the evening.  As these things go, the more the host drank, the better the stuff he started to pull out when it really should be the other way around.  I actually put that bottle back before we put too much damage to it for selfish reasons... want to try it another time.

jdc, I did a little look up about the Nikka Whiskey with the samurai helmet. It is only being sold from Japanese duty free stores for 3300yen, so you would need to travel to Japan to get a bottle, even it was only to stop at the airport duty free shop. Then again Nikka is a nice place to visit for reasons other than whiskey.

My guess as to why most people bring out the better bottles later is to stop them being consumed in the one night, and it would be hard to drink the really good stuff and then try and drink the less than good stuff, well unless you were absolutely slaughtered.

So the owner called around and found a liquor store that had it and sent his son out to buy a couple of bottles. Damn, if this stuff isn't delicious. It's mildly sweet, with just a background hinting of Cacao. It also has the aroma of chocolate covered cherries. I bought a bottle for my wife, and she absolutely loves it.

I have this Chocolate Shop (http://www.chocolateshopwine.com/wines/creme_de_cocoa) wine on hand presently. I think yours must be a superior one. I've had a chocolate red in the past that was quite good but this creme de cocoa variety just don't have enough of the wine part.

The one I have is definitely a red, it almost reminds me of a chocolate, cherry port, but without the brandy fortification.

Carrie and I have been trying to come up with names for our "signature cocktails" at the wedding.  We finally hit on the perfect names:

Martin: "Transporter Psychosis" - watermelon puree, vodka, splash of melon liquor, fresh lemon, agave syrup drizzle, watermelon ball garnish, ice
Carrie: "The Picard Maneuver" - don't remember exactly what's in this but it was originally called "Blackberry Whiskey Smash"

Well she's a little bummed that it doesn't have tea in it (or anything related to Picard) but it's such a perfect drink name.

I worked on the show Booze Traveler last year. Two of my favorite drinks were from Spain.

Casa Mariol Vermut. Vermouth should become a big brunch thing in the US, hopefully sooner rather than later. A little ice and spritzer. So good. So refreshing.

Ratafia from Catalonia. Made with walnuts and as many herbs they can throw in and then placed out in the sun for 40 days. Surprising sweet and very aromatic. Just delicious.

I just got back from a trip to Portland where I went to 9 different breweries and tasted about 75 different beers in a bit over three days.

A couple general thoughts on the brewery side. My favorite breweries in terms over overall averages and such were Breakside out of Portland, Buoy out of Astoria and Deschutes (out of every liquor store, probably, though the good stuff is less likely to be there). A few other solid breweries. On the other hand, Rogue is pretty poor considering it has national distribution of stuff. Same goes with Widmer (which I didn't tour but just haven't had good experience with them yet and they are broad distro).

Anyway, below are all the beers I rated above 4 stars:
5 Stars
Tough Love (Crux Fermentation Project, Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout)
4.75 Stars
Smoke N’ Burn (Fat Head’s Brewery, Imperial Porter)
Sang Royal (Cascade Brewing, Sour)
Oregon Garden Lavender Saison (Buoy Beer Company, Saison)
4.5 Stars
Oblique Black and White Coffee Stout (Cascade Brewing, Stout)
Tripel De Miel (Breakside Brewery, Tripel)
Shot in the Dark Breakfast Stout (Fort George Brewery, Imperial Stout)
Hard Apricot Cider (Atlas Cider Company, Cider)
Dunkel (Buoy Beer, Dunkel)
Ruth (Hair of the Dog Brewing, Pale Ale)
4.25 Stars
Double Fruitcake Stout (Buckman Botanical Brewery, Stout)
Honeycot (Cascade Brewing, Sour)
Strawberry (Cascade Brewing, Sour)
Ginja Ninja (2 Towns, Cider)
Fest Lager (Breakside, Marzen)
Export Stout (Breakside, Stout)
Lunchbreak ISA (Breakside, IPA)
Kentucky Girl (Fort George, Stout)
Mosaic Single Hop IPA (Buoy, IPA)
Drought Harvest (Deschutes Brewery, Saison)
Plum Runner (Deschutes, Belgian Strong Dark)
Zarabanda (Deschutes, Saison)
Black Rabbit (McMenamins, Porter)
Oatmeal Stout (Hair of the Dog/Dieu Du Ciel, Stout)

The one that confused me was the B&W Coffee Stout. It was blonde. I've had a Chocolate Blonde before (really great actually) and this had many of the same attributes, basically allowing the coffee to come through without the smoke that you typically get in a stout/porter. But can a stout actually be blonde colored or is that no longer a stout?

Hard Apricot Cider (Atlas Cider Company, Cider)

That sounds really good. I checked out their website and would be even more keen on the Blackberry & Elderberry cider.

Yeah, the "blonde stout" is a new trend. Stone's "Stochasticity Project - Master Of Disguise Imperial Golden Stout" was one of the first I think. Per their copy - its the next step to flow from the Black IPA:

"All the deep, roasty essence of a stout presented in a brilliant golden ale. Things aren't always as they seem, but not all deception is devious. Some illusions and misnomers lead to life's most delightful surprises. Case in point-this beer, the yang to the yin that is the black India pale ale. Once revolutionary for its onyx appearance, it is now an accepted and beloved member of the India pale ale family tree. Thus we took the spirit of a dark beer-the time-honored stout-and applied a similar science of thought, brewing it to be golden-hued. That is what this experimental series and its latest creation are all about. Cocoa and coffee beans impart roastiness sans darkening to this brew, while flakes oats provide an enveloping mouthfeel. The result is a stout that looks more like a blonde, but is a raven beauty at heart."

It actually started as an April Fools joke in 2010 and was turned into an actual brew: http://www.stonebrewing.com/luciferin/

Family was in town and we spent the week bumming around on the beach and going wine tasting at whatever wineries were nearby.  I think we made it to 12 different places and must've tried 50+ wines. I accumulated a dozen different bottles, but the best in show, by far, was this:

We were a group of 5... I think we all came away with a bottle of it. It was weird because up to that point in the day there had been very little consensus about anything, but then we tried this and we all looked at each other and were like "wow".  :)

I can't wait for the next opportunity to open it! :D

Oh man, you'd love it here jdc. The Okanagan valley (https://i.imgur.com/HUKgUXC.png) is littered with wineries and vineyards. Over 130 last I checked.  They're growing all sorts of grapes, and producing all sorts of wine. It's not just grapes though, it's a major fruit growing region in general. Peaches, cherries, plums, apples...

It's a great place to vacation (or retire!). You could easily BnB your way around the lake, hitting all the wineries by day. Lots of people do. Everywhere you drive you'll see signs directing you to the nearest winery.

Sounds like a good plan.  what is the best time of year?  I am making a trip back to the US in November but I am guessing that is not a good time.  But I am now starting to consider/explore where the next chapter might be.  I'm in no hurry but considering new ideas.

A co-worker's sister previously owed me a wine for covering the co-worker's shift so she could attend a nephew's something or other. Now the sister claims to owe me another wine because I'm giving my old iPhone to her daughter who broke her last one. Because of the above I decided to consolidate my demand into one bottle of ice wine, because I tried some at Winnipeg wine fest and it was amazing. I'd even take one produced by artificial refrigeration.

September is nice, as you're typically past the really scorching days. August cracks 30 pretty regularly, September averages in the mid to low 20's. A lot of the fruit picking will be wrapped up by September, except for apples... it's prime time for apples. This year is already off to a warm start (april broke all kinds of heat records), so things will be early (again). While normally they'd be beginning to harvest the early varieties of grapes in september, last year some were being picked in mid-august! Even so, you'll see some grapes still on the vine as you go from place to place, as most places set aside some fruit for the icewine harvest in November. The lake will be a refreshing 17c or so, if you fancy a day on the beach and a swim. School is back in by september too, so accommodation will be easier to find (not that it's ever that hard).

How much time do you think you'd have?

This year I have a lot of vacation to take due to change of rules on how much I can carry over.  I still have 40 days to take to get down to my min amount that I can roll over into 2017.  I am probably taking 2 weeks in the US in November (SF and Chicago).  But I could possible increase it but it is sometimes difficult to take such a continues block at one time I have start planning for other times.  Maybe if my wife can get off in Sept we could do a separate trip to Vancouver and Okanagan Valley.  I have been wanting her to see Vancouver as it is a place I would consider moving to

It got lost in the back of the wine fridge but has been properly stored.  I do see some reviews from last year that it is still drinking well.  Hopefully it won't be Jam as it will be a very expensive bottle of jam... Will find out tonight.

I've stopped buying wines until I clear out those that are aged past what they should.  Many Aussie Cabs from 2001-2006 to go in the next few months

Well yesterday I went to a gin festival. I made several mistakes. 1 did not have a big meal before. 2 did not factor in that lots of small samples quickly add up. I did at least eat food there and drank a bit of water, but it was very far from enough. Here are some of the gins I tried:

(http://i67.tinypic.com/2ekkf2v.jpg)  (http://i65.tinypic.com/144cnpg.jpg)
(http://i63.tinypic.com/33mrlmr.jpg)  (http://i64.tinypic.com/2n9e4hj.jpg)

All up 32 different samples and several of them I tried straight and then another sample with tonic water. The saying 'way too much' definitely applied. Especially as there were a lot of navy strength (>58%) ones.

All the ones I tried were from Australia or New Zealand and lots had won international awards (in particular the Four Pillars gins). The unfiltered Poltergeist gin was a notable flavour. There was some nice variations on the classic gin and a lot that tried to be very traditional. I very much recommend going to such an event, but take it easy and do not try and sample all the available gins (I only tried about half of the available ones).

There are a number of rather sweet liqueurs from Portugal that are generally low on alcohol: ginjinha, Moscatel, amendoa amarga...I imagine they would be troublesome for you to find though.

I have always found anis based drinks to be very sweet - pastis, ouzo, etc. - but that stuff tastes terrible, so I would not recommend it.

Vermouth is sweet but pretty much useless unless you're making a cocktail.

I have a number of friends who enjoy Baileys so if you want to introduce your progeny to the joys of college life and bad decisions that might be a good one. Also: Jagermeister, Malibu and Blue Curação.

Absinthe would be the obvious choice but you cannot find the proper stuff nowadays, only the heretical 50% kind.

I imagine you've introduced them to wine already, but more specifically, have they had Sauternes?

I hear they drink Cointreau neat in some parts of France. With some ice and a garnish of orange I mean. I reserve it for cocktails.

Some rums are sweet and I seem to remember that neat cachaça is as well.

These are my top of mind suggestions but port should, naturally, be your first choice.

Come back to me when you guys get started on the real stuff.

The only alcohol that touches these lips is wine at communion.

Plus, alcoholism runs in my family.  :-\

As a young person, I tasted a number of alcohols, not liking most, except a couple.  That, plus a wife who doesn't touch the stuff, has kept me from drinking almost at all.  I've never been drunk.

My kids has an uncle who's an alcoholic, but they've grown up with people whose lives have been destroyed by alcohol and drugs, so they aren't likely to abuse it.

In the end, I'd rather them experiment with alcohol at home and learn that it has to do with what we like, not what other people tell us to like.

The only wine they've tried is champagne.  They didn't think it was great, but they didn't consider it awful, either, unlike sake.  I like the wine suggestions because they might be likely to like those, although I think they should try a dark ale, because ales are very Portland.

We'll avoid anise drinks, because none of us are fans of anise.

What we have on our list is:
Scotch
Port
Moscato
Vodka (perhaps with orange juice)
Budwiser
Portland-made ale, we have a micro brewery right across the street

How about a gin & tonic? Or better yet, gin & ginger beer/ale?
Title: Re: Favorite Alcoholic Drink?

I have a question about gin and tonic.  I have read Douglas Adams wax eloquent on the drink, but I've tasted gin and I've had tonic and tonic is so very disgusting.  Gin is barely drinkable.  What is it together that makes it good?  Or is it one of those things you need to "develop a taste for", which just means "you're not supposed to like it, but if you drink it enough you can tell others you like it."

I liked them from the first time I had one, but I wouldn't dispute that gin does have a peculiar flavor. Plus it has an especially steep drop in taste when it becomes cheaper compared to other boozes.  And I like tonic but I wouldn't drink it by itself.

Gin is reasonably good mixed with something like 7-Up and tonic isn't that bad mixed with something like the bottom of a drain.

I will try tackling this one thing at a time by order of seriousness.

Can I ask how come you're trying all these different liquors before regular wine? I would think that would be the first think anyone tastes, and by that I mean, I am appalled, and feel compelled to open a bottle of red to drink to your poor, sober, Bordeaux-less children.

Isn't Budweiser the American Heineken, but worse? Why would you expose anyone to that?

Gin is an ambrosia that was invented by Dionysus on his trip to the botanical garden and is one of the few good things left in the world. If you've never tasted a good one I can recommend some brands. Most people are only familiar with the likes of Gordon's and Bombay Sapphire which are to gin what Internet Explorer is to web browsers.

Gin and tonic typically refers to all mixes of gin and tonic-like beverages, of which ginger ale is one example. Ginger ale is almost universally superior to tonic and whenever I get the chance it is my pick if I am going the cocktail route. The brand is essential because most of the taste in the cocktail comes from the tonic, so if one a budget one should invest in a good tonic instead of a good gin. I have gin and tonics because whenever I fill a balloon with neat gin it apparently means that I « have a drinking problem ».

Absinthe would be the obvious choice but you cannot find the proper stuff nowadays, only the heretical 50% kind.

I did not realise we were allowed to suggest brown spirits. In order:

Cognac
Scotch
Other, lesser whiskies (with the interesting recent inclusion of the Japanese variety)
Armagnac
Rum
Bourbon

Instead of the vodka/orange juice option, typically associated with college parties and getting thoroughly trashed, can I suggest instead Bloody Marries, typically associated with white women having brunch and getting thoroughly tipsy?

Also, it dawns on me that no one's mentioned mead yet, which surely fills the sweet criteria.

And I just remembered hard cider.

Okay, let's answer some questions:

How set on Budweiser are you?

Not especially, but I think they should try a cheap American beer, because they are so readily available (and I think they should be mystified with me why so many people drink such awful crap).  Coors is what I had in mind first, but Budweiser is, I believe, more common.

Can I ask how come you're trying all these different liquors before regular wine?

I don't really know.  There is no master plan.  And when I go to the store there are two full aisles, both sides, full of wines.  I have no idea what to choose.

Isn't Budweiser the American Heineken, but worse? Why would you expose anyone to that?

As per above

You probably do have a drinking problem, but I do too, only it's not alcohol-based.  Ginger ale instead of tonic is a great idea.  And I'm not familiar with what is a good gin.  I'm open to suggestions.

I'll probably stick with Scotch, because that's my favorite.

A bloody mary is a great idea, and another tasty favorite of mine.

Mead is also a great idea.

Ok with gin you have your classic flavour (Old Tom), some various country specific classics, and more modern botanical gins (often flavoured with country specific botanicals, such as Lemon Myrtle here in Australia). All gins are botanical, but it can be used to refer to those moving further away from Old Tom in flavour. I like my botanical gins, but some of the classics are very nice. Good old Bombay Sapphire is a great standard, or a fancier and little better one try Tanqueray #10. In a botanical I like Four Pillars, but I doubt you will be able to get that there. I would suggest going into a booze shop with a wider range and asking the staff. In a 'softer' gin option try a Sloe gin, which is gin flavoured with Sloe berries (e.g. Plymouth Sloe Gin). This should not be drunk with tonic, rather lemonade (aka 7up) or something else. As for gin and ginger ale, bah humbug. Gin, tonic, ice, 2 slices of lemon or lime squeezed (so the juice goes into the drink) then dropped into the drink, that is magic on a hot summers day.

Note: I really should do some research as to the types of gin, so take with a massive grain of salt my definitions of the various types.

My favourite gin at the moment is Monkey 47 but it is rather pricey. Good alternatives are The Botanist, Hendricks and Gin Mare. I am not fond of Bombay Sapphire but it is several notches superior to Gordon's. Plymouth and Pillars are not sold here.

As for the people who put 7up in their gin:

I know the port would be sweet, but wouldn't the tonic flatten out the sweetness?  Plus there's a lemon slice to serve with it.  Anyway, white port is not expensive here and we've got Fever Tree tonic so I'm going to give it a try.  I'll report back.

Also botanicals ... learning about gin. Here I thought it was all the same.  Seems every gin is different depending on the botanicals added.
Title: Re: Favorite Alcoholic Drink?

Fever Tree is a great brand. It's what I get whenever I have good gin at my disposal. Anything that is not ginger or lemon should dampen the sweetness.

I don't know why anyone would want to waste spoil port with tonic though. Is the port terrible? Did the port do something wrong? I am crying a little.

I'll second Hendricks and The Botanist, found them both to be excellent as well as both the standard and barrel aged versions of Blue Coat.

Beer:

Yes, by all means something dark, black butte is a solid starter from your neck and I'd also drop in Guinness, not as much for the flavour but as one of the few nitrogenated cans available they can get a sense of the textural difference without the need to abscond to the pub.

Sure, I guess bud, the logic is sound and kinda funny. Then maybe a good pils for comparison (Firestone Walker Pivo or Victory Prima).

A pale ale (Ballast Point Grunion or Alpine Happy Birthday), a West Coast IPA (Alpine Duet or Stone IPA) and a Northeast IPA (most of these are only locally/brewery available - check Great Notion maybe or Omnipollo's Fatamorgana) to taste what hops can do.

Then a wheat (Franziskaner) and a wit (Allagash White) for what yeast can do.

Just stay away from grain based alcohol and you would be fine from the disease perspective. Wine & derivatives, cider, perry, potato spirits, sorghum beers, ect.

I didn't start hanging around people who drank socially until about that time and I felt like crap all the time and didn't drink. They I discovered why, changed my diet, and my diet is so light I don't really feel like adding alcohol into the mix.

Some real highlights in the Beer department were the "Speedway Stout" (12% ABV) and a Scotch Ale from a brewery called AleSmith.

The "Hefe Hell" and Schwarzbier from Pfungstädter

And the Islay Scotch Ale from Highway 97 brewery.

For a widely distro-ed Imperial Coffee Stout, it's pretty solid, though some of the variants are really exceptional.

Went to one of my favorite breweries on Saturday and they had a cherry sour made with lactose and vanilla, so basically a milkshake sour rather than the increasingly prevalent milkshake IPA. Keith, have you seen this catching on? It was amazing so I'd be pretty excited about that trend since I've found milkshake IPAs less dependable than I had hoped after discovering them via Tired Hands. I've only had one truly great milkshake IPA from these parts, a coconut one that went with the tropical hop palate to really hit the spot.

Yeah, the J.R.E.A.M. series from Burley Oak is mostly responsible for the juicy lactose sour thing from what I know. Some of them I've really liked, others have come off crazy tart and bitter (depends on the fruit additions). They don't ship to well from what I've heard though, the 'wild' yeast don't get happy at higher temps. They've also done soft serve versions!
