Title: Mindie Throwdown 2k12: Of MotyRae JepsFun. Edition
Post by: FLYmeatwad on May 16, 2012, 02:44:23 PM
I know the year isn't halfway done yet, but that's why this is only the first edition. It's hard to deny that 2k12 has been a huge year for mindie bands the world over. Now I know you may be thinking that CRJ isn't really mindie since she's not even a band, but I like to think of her as a little bit of mindie pop because it makes the title that much more enjoyable to say. It's also hard to deny that she has been tearing up the radio speakers, so really should she be excluded just because she doesn't fit in to the old boys club/is Canadian/has garnered too much Gomez and Bieber love?

But when you put them all up against one another, who is/are the true King/Queen of 2k12's mindie? You decide!

1. Of Monsters and Men - "Little Talks" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghb6eDopW8I)
2. Gotye - "Somebody That I Used To Know" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY)
3. Carly Rae Jepsen - "Call Me Maybe" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWNaR-rxAic&ob=av2e)
4. Fun. - "We Are Young" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv6dMFF_yts&ob=av2e)

Interesting. Is that when it really started blowing up?

Perhaps it's 2k12's "Super Bass"?

The 'Pedia is telling me "We Are Young" didn't go Billboard Number 1 until March, so I'm still going to count it.

All of these songs are awful, except the the maybe one.

Yes.

"We Are Fun" may just replace Black Eyed Peas' "I Got a Feeling" for the top spot on the Twisted Sister Memorial List of the Most Inane Anthems Ever, as well as Case Studies in Modern Pop Music As Evidence of Dysgenics ... I may just have to boycott Apatow's new film just for using that swill in the trailer.

1. "Somebody That I Used To Know" (B)
2. "Call Me Maybe" (B-)
3. "Little Talks" (C-)
4. "We Are Young" (Woof)

Far too generous, tomorrow man. Three of those are zero bones is a woof territory.

That Gotye song is pleasant enough. Totally not worth hating.

"Call Me Maybe" was a disappointment after hearing so much about it.

This year still have been pretty big for mindie, but I'm thinking about closing this poll. As far as I'm concerned "Take A Walk" has such a stranglehold on 2K12 mindie in terms of quality that it's not really fair to include any other song in its league. It's just head and shoulders above all other mindie creations.

Call Me Maybe is a fun throwaway song. The rest are legitimately good.

The question now, I suppose, is has Mindie 2K12 died? Will it be resurrected in 2K13? Is that Owl City/CRJ song more Mindie than "Call Me Maybe?" Did Passion Pit really just completely dominate the Mindie scene so hard that it's not even CINECAST!ing fair to other Mindie artists so they all just quit and started integrating EDM in to their stuff?

These are the questions that keep me up at night.

I'm still trying to find out if we're human or dancer.

The better question, I guess, is "has mindie died?" Answer: No, she has that new show on FOX that FLY keeps watching even though it seems like no one else does.

There will hopefully be a 2k13 version, but it's way too early to say. Been a while since mindie has blown up on the radio/internet/anywhere. I blame Passion Pit, they perfected it and everything else just seems terrible by comparison.

EDIT: Hmm, forgot I wrote that post like three posts up a couple of months ago where I wondered the same things. At least you're consistent, FLY!

Voted Fun. because they needed the support, though Some Nights is the killer track there. All four of these are pretty dank but I think the Gotye would be my pure choice.

Reading back in the thread I see that the oppressive atmosphere of snobbishness on this forum isn't restricted to film.

The problem is that I'm fairly certain Passion Pit CINECAST!ing killed mindie so hard that it's been pretty much dead ever since. I'll keep an ear out though, matthew.

Yo bros. Passhy Pit literally CINECAST!ing shut mindie down in 2k12, and honestly it has never been the same since. They did just release a new album though. FLY is about to discover if mindie is 'back.'

Blame The Chainsmokers.

But what about Fitz & the Tantrums "Hand Clap" and a #1 album from The 1975?

That's true, there are still people who carry the torch, but until they make a Taco Bell commercial, I'm just not sure.
