Title: Filmspotters' Top 100 Animated Films 2012: FYC Lists and Discussion
Post by: Bondo on July 27, 2012, 09:39:51 AM
Top 100 Animated Films

1. Submit a ranked ballot (http://www.filmspotting.net/forum/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=1229) of up to 50 films by the end of the day, August 15th. It is perfectly acceptable to submit a ballot with fewer than 50 films and even if you haven't seen a lot of the films from the previous iteration. Your participation is important.

2. Scoring will be as follows:
1: 10 points
2-5: 8
6-10: 6
11-15: 5
16-20: 4
21-30: 3
31-40: 2
41-50: 1

3. Results will be tabulated and posted on August 19th if I get at least 20 ballots.

4. All films labeled by imdb as animated are eligible provided they are films (short or feature length) and not television. This means that Animatrix and Team America are now eligible, contrary to previous years. Avatar is not eligible.

5. Please feel free to post preliminary lists to help everyone remember things. Also remember to check the previous list (http://www.filmspotting.net/forum/index.php?topic=8561.0) from 2010, including all the films that didn't make the cut last time.

50. The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926)

I left off Looney Tunes because I feel like I need to rewatch/re-rank a lot more than I have.  Right now it'd just be all 1957 stuff.  Maybe the next time we do this I'll prioritize some Looney revisits.

I'm not super-psyched about this list, to be honest.  There's some stuff on here I love deeply, but clearly I need to watch a lot more animation.  Embarrassingly heavy on Ghibli, W&G, and only because I watched them fairly recently, Kawamoto and Starewicz.  I'm surprised I have Snow White ranked this high, but I couldn't find anything I'd rather put there.

With shorts eligible and the point system less, um, severe, it might be worth allowing people to submit up to 100 films on their ballots, rather than just a top 50.

(Alternatively, maybe the project should be the Top 50 Animated Films of all time. Maybe a full 100 makes the list too inclusive, meaning no major animated release really has to fight for a spot on the list.)

If we include shorts, it needs to be a top 100-- that really opens the field.

I must admit I fail to see how the puppetry of Team America is animation, but what ever I will just not include it in my list and mentally adjust the final list. Thanks for organising this Bondo.

I will not expand it to 100...make choices people, you don't get to include everything you like. If I switch it to 100 then the list gets overrun by a bunch of things people kinda like enough to include.

Also, television cartoons are not eligible, TV isn't film. I don't want your Looney Tunes submissions.

Puppetry is like on-camera claymation, ergo it's animation.

Looney Tunes weren't made for television.

Meh. Fine, I'll allow it.

When it comes down to it...people have to decide whether it makes sense for them to include any given film, given the constraints of a 50 spot ballot.

:o Continuous filmed motion versus single frame at a time, that is not an equivalent.

I think thats a fairly limited way of looking at animation.

Live action is a series of individual pictures (shot and) shown at high rate of speed...I don't see how that is a viable distinction between live-action and animation.

Anyway, like I said, imdb labels are determining factor and they agree with me about Team America.

Lets start a pool on what page of the thread the motion capture debate begins on. I'm thinking between pages 4-7.

Even though IMDB tags them as animated

On a serious note, ranking Toy Story films is an incredibly difficult task. I've switched them around several times now and I can't seem to figure out where to place them in relation to each other.

Nausicaä (1984)   99

I love asking people to quantify these microscopically small differences, even though I know it usually tough to put into words. Care to try anyways? What makes the 1 pt difference here? :)

It isn't really microscopic.  If I could give Spirited Away 120 or 150, I would.  It is my only film worth 100, and it will remain so for the time being.  Nausicaa I deeply love, but it doesn't really compare to my love for Spirited Away.  Really, my list begins at 99, and SA is the only one that goes beyond that.

I am preparing a SA hyperbole fest, so I will hold off until then.

In my case I gave 100 to my top 50 films, then 99 to the next 20 or so and 98 to the final top 100 films and then worked down from there. You can take a bottom up or a top down view, but ya gots ta decide (glass half/empty scenario).

Somewhere around 100. It's great animation but doesn't do all that much for me. A rewatch might push it up, but probably not into the top 50.

Also, television cartoons are not eligible, TV isn't film. I don't want your Looney Tunes submissions.

So How the Grinch Stole Christmas is ineligible, right?

Well, I never had an objection to TV movies, I was talking about TV shows, but since apparently for the olds, the Looney Tunes shorts were screened cinematically rather than as collections on Saturday morning TV, I've given up policing eligibility. If it's animated and not a serial TV show, it's okay. No The Simpsons or The Family Guy, obviously.

22 Ballots in.
259 Films Voted For.
Short films are definitely making their presence known and I think the list is better for their presence.
No film will be making the list with only one person's vote, which I think is generally a benefit for group lists.

My plan is to do all the final prep when I wake up on Sunday, ballots and revisions will be accepted until that point. Any requests on what type of info/statistics you'd like beyond the listing of the top-100?

It was #1 in the 2010 ranks, so the question is, will it hold #1?

Hint: Some things will move up, some things will move down. Some things will enter the list, some will leave. Some might even stay the same, though of that I can't be sure because I haven't done the proper comparisons yet.

I am not planning on there being ties.
First tie-breaker is # of ballots the film appears on.
Second tie-breaker would be number of #1, #2-5, #6-10, etc votes in descending order.

If a film has the exact same vote profile, it would be left as a tie.

The title that caught my eye was Sagan om Karl-Bertil Jonssons julafton, which I have never heard of and I am reasonably sure I have not seen. Looked it up and Bernard Cribbins did some of the voice work on the English dub. I have always liked Bernard Cribbins. I like the idea of the story, a good steal from the rich, give to the poor one (well according to Wikipedia).

Also liked all the Wallace and Gromit in your top 10.

I didn't know there was an English translation of it. Please try to find it! I can't recommend it enough.
This is a lovely, lovely adaptation of a short story by a Swedish comedian/writer/director/multi genius Tage Danielsson, who sadly died way too early. They broadcast it on public TV every Christmas and I love it dearly.

A fairytale that is enjoyable for everyone, but maybe even more so for grown-ups. It could very well deserve an even higher position on my list. It's just that I've seen it so many times so I know it by heart and it makes it kind of harder to judge it.

So glad you bothered to look it up!

Here's a link to Wikipedia for everyone else. I had no idea they had included it! It feels so... typically Swedish.

As a warm up, here are some reviews from Amazon and IMDB.

Spirited Away
"THERE IS NO STORY HERE! Nothing makes any sense at all. The characters never come to life in any way that makes any sense, the goal of the heroine never becomes apparent, and you're left waiting for the end. After one hour of complete and utter misery, we fast-forwarded and were very glad we did, because the ending also makes no sense! So WHY WATCH IT? and why do people rave on and on about it? I think one reviewer has hit the nail on the head: people are only pretending to like it because they think it makes them sound intellectual. On a scale from one to ten, we rate it a ZERO, but if you could take the scale and actually drop it on the movie, and destroy it, that might be entertaining!"

The Incredibles
"If you want to take down The Man, this is not the movie for you. If you want to laugh along with the rest of the johnny every-men, and then drink some crazy cool heavily advertised sody-pop and then black out and wake up the next morning In Bed With The Man...then this is your movie! Marginal cleverness in a first world country should not be applauded. This was marketed to kids and adults alike but the premise set up in the first few minutes was so weak as to put off anyone who has every been stuck in a waiting room and had to read just one copy of the American Bar Journal. We all know that a spate of joe-blows suing superheros whom the governement depends upon is ridiculous. That would get legislated so fast it would make Jack McCoy's head spin. The whole thing was a big love-fest to the conventional, couched in catchy new upholstry. It did not fool me but it probably will you. "

Toy Story
"I found this amusing for about no minutes whatsoever. Gaudy bit of CGI fluff pretending to be a "children's classic" - only in the dreams of the cynical and the dead."

My Neighbor Totoro
"This is probably the most over rated film from Miyazaki, the uber over rated Japanese anime director. Its all done in a pastel tone animated style that looks like an a painting by a first grader, yet some of the backgrounds do have a certain charm to them. There is no edge, conflict, sense of menace or real emotion or drama in this pablum coated film to engage the audience. Even a 3 year old would become bored-fast. "

In frustration I've entertained similar theories.

A great varied set of styles for those animators, disappointed that Terry Gilliam was not on the list.
