Title: The Ratings Project: Top 100 Horror Films (2013) -- Your Lists
Post by: pixote on September 20, 2013, 11:26:26 AM
Post your top horror films of all time. Lists can be up to 100 films long. The order doesn't matter. Every film listed will enter the Ratings Project, and the countdown of our collective Top 100 will be begin on or around Halloween.

Deadline to submit lists is October 10.

Go!

The trickiest part of doing a genre list like this will be deciding which films are truly a part of the genre. I don't have a good solution for this yet, but I'm optimistic we'll figure something out.

I'm so excited. Doing my list now. From a genre point of view, I'd go with an anything goes kind of thing. If I want to include Fantasia for the Night on Bald Mountain sequence (and parts of the Rites of Spring, scary dinos!), why not?

From a genre point of view, I'd go with an anything goes kind of thing. If I want to include Fantasia for the Night on Bald Mountain sequence (and parts of the Rites of Spring, scary dinos!), why not?

Keeping with the Disney theme, take a film like Bambi. A handful of people call it the most terrifying film ever made — and it definitely rates high enough as a film to make a Top 100 list — but maybe only one person in thirty would really call it a horror film. I don't want to have to keep two sets of books (e.g., "it's a 10.0 in general but a 4.0 as a Horror film"), so I need a simple system to take into account the group's opinion on what is and isn't horror.

I'll probably send out the top 500 to everyone in a PM and let them single out the films they don't think should be included on a Horror list; and then discount their votes on those films. So Bambi could have 25 votes for a 7.71 average in the Ratings Project in general, but only 4 votes for a 9.5 average so far as the Horror list is concerned. The score for the latter would be considerably lower, putting the film on the borderline so far as making the list. For example.

edit: On second thought, the much simpler solution would just be to poll on the questionable films and go with the majority. That's much more likely.

One of the few Icheckmovies lists where Im not even amongst the top 1000 users is the Top 500 Horror Movies. Fixing that this coming month and a half.

Id just say anything with an IMDb horror hashtag works (its seems like they've got a lot better with those...The Godfather used to be classified in roughly 37 different genres). Anything else on a list can just be put in a yes or no poll for a couple of days after the deadline.

Building my list, but you're right. I'm really torn about including serial killer films. Psycho definitely makes the list, but Silence of the Lambs doesn't seem right to me. Even though it has quite a few Horror elements, it's a manhunt movie, and ranking-wise it would be my #1.

My IMDb horror lists includes The Phantom Carriage, Targets, Poison, Hocus Pocus, Nightmares in Red, White and Blue, and Cropsey. Hmm.

Battle Royale? Never would have occurred to me.

I questioned a few of those myself (Cropsey and Battle Royale didn't make the cut).

Some of the lower movies are better than some of the higher movies but not as scary (Bergman!). Some of the higher movies are worse than some of the lower movies, but scarier (Paranormal Activity 3!).

These are the ones I left deliberately off my list.

1.   Dawn Of The Dead (1978)
3.   Aliens
10.   Hellraiser
25.   Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn
37.   The Omen (1976)
100.   Cube

Some Bold Choices

96. Michael Jackson: Thriller
75. The Terminator
73. The Seventh Seal
71. Fanny and Alexander
13. We Need to Talk About Kevin

I'm a bold man. I think I can defend all of those. The two Bergman are more scenes than the entire films, but there is a dread associated with each that fits the horror thing pretty well. The Terminator is pretty clearly a horror film (at least, if Jaws is). Thriller terrified me as a kid. WNtTAK is really creepy.

This was tough because, like Pixote said, defining "horror" is a difficult task.  Some films, like Aliens, Shaun of the Dead, or Silence of the Lambs, can certainly be called horror films, but I had to cut them out, as much as I love them.  That's not to say I didn't include other similar films (see Army of Darkness).  So I guess my decisions were completely arbitrary and based on how I was feeling when making the list.  I also decided to leave off a lot of the 50s giant monster/nuclear war films that I love so much, requisitioning them to the "sci-fi" genre (again, pretty arbitrary).  All this nonsense leaves me with the following list.

100. Session 9 (Anderson, 2001)
99. The Devil's Backbone (Del Toro, 2001)
98. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (Marins, 1964)
97. Blood for Dracula (Morrissey, 1974)
96. Black Sunday (Bava, 1960)
95. High Tension (Aja, 2003)
94. Dracula (Browning, 1931)
93. The Abominable Dr. Phibes (Fuest, 1971)
92. Dust Devil (Stanley, 1992)
91. Mad Love (Freund, 1935)
90. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Wiene, 1920)
89. The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
88. Theater of Blood (Hickox, 1973)
87. Repulsion (Polanski, 1965)
86. Sisters (De Palma, 1973)
85. The Descent (Marshall, 2005)
84. Quatermass and the Pit (Baker, 1967)
83. Santa Sangre (Jodorowsky, 1989)
82. Nosferatu (Murnau, 1922)
81. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (McNaughton, 1986)
80. Horror of Dracula (Fisher, 1958)
79. Flesh for Frankenstein (Morrissey, 1973)
78. A Tale of Two Sisters (Kim, 2003)
77. Night of the Demon aka Curse of the Demon (Tourneur, 1957)

The Terminator is pretty clearly a horror film (at least, if Jaws is).

I see why you can make the comparison since both are about people trying to survive a mindless killing machine. However, The Terminator's confrontations are all played for action while nearly all of Jaws' confrontations are played for scares and surprise (with a couple of moments of adventure).

LukeRobot, looking forward to your upcoming Shocktober picks. I remember you were really eclectic last year. Lot of overlap with our lists. Especially happy to see more support for The Changeling and Carnival of Souls.

Interesting that The Terminator would stick in your craw here, 1SO. I always thought it was kind of accepted as being in the Alien mode (first movie=horror, second movie=action). But then you put Aliens at number 3 and I have no idea what's happening anymore.

People easily forget that Aliens has creepy moments and scares a-plenty. They remember the action because once it kicks in the film becomes pretty relentless. (Though the last 20 minutes contain 2 of the biggest Horror Movie moments.)

I also remember you have a strange hate for Aliens that I will never understand.

Aliens definitely has the scares in there.  It terrified me as a kid.  And I would never argue against anyone's choice to call it a horror film.

I always have grandiose plans for October every year, being my favorite season and a perfect excuse to watch horror films, but I often fall short of my goal.  I am going to try to see at least one a day.  I am going to a 24-hour marathon at the end of the month, so that should certainly help.

If I go by my recorded viewings since 2003 and filter on IMDb by genre, I've seen less than 100 "Horror" films since then (98 to be exact). Only half of them have a rating assigned, and of those, only 13 are rated 7 or higher. So I guess I may be able to come up with about 25 list-worthy titles in the end.

Didn't even think to include The Act of Killing, but it totally works. I did think to include Sunshine, but didn't because arbitrary.

oldkid's choice of United 93 made me think of AoK - not sure why I didn't put in U93, 'cause that could go on my list, too. And Sunshine I wasn't sure about, but decided to include it at the last moment. So yeah, arbitrary - me, too!

I do like your Terminator choice, Jr. I prolly should've included that one myself.

I included Sunshine because the structure and plot was very much like a horror movie.  The main difference between it and Alien is the monster.

24.   And Then There Were None (1945)
35.   The Changeling

Some nice choices. I'm loving every time someone includes The Changeling. I feel like it's the great one that's slipped through the cracks. Maybe we can make it the Pontypool of this Shocktober.

And Then There Were None is a lot of fun, and one I would especially like to recommend to Sandy. Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Huston are two of my favorites so watching them together is a rare treat.

I have been thinking what to list in this thread since it started and The Changeling was one of the first that came to my mind. I wish I kept proper lists and these would always be easier to do.

Thanks! I caught up with The Changeling relatively recently - I love a good creepy house movie, and this one has some nice layers. George C. Scott is just great, too, and of course, I loved the familiar setting: Seattle, esp the UW campus!

I thought of Sandy with my ATTWN pick, too. :) I think you might enjoy it, Sandy!

I may have to get creative with the definition of horror to even reach a Top 50 that would consist of films that I genuinely enjoy and wasn't just throwing in filler. Horror isn't one of my most viewed genres.

I may have to get creative with the definition of horror to even reach a Top 50 that would consist of films that I genuinely enjoy and wasn't just throwing in filler. Horror isn't one of my most viewed genres.

That's what I did.  Heck, I like my list.

I'll likely be swiping a few off your list. I'm also struggling with what to do with Alien and Aliens, I think the former is a better horror film but the latter is better overall.

Of course, I put both.  I agree that the first is a better horror film, but there are enough horror elements in the second for me to throw it on the list.

I was thinking about something here. Feel free to shoot it down if it's too crazy, pix.

The question of repeated movies from the regular ratings project is an interesting one. Many of these will be crossovers, I think, and there's gotta be some reason to go back and revisit those movies we've already rated. So, how about two ratings for each movie, one for the quality of the film and one for the scariness. That way we could have some crowd-sourced list of scary movies that aren't really scary for those of us that don't particularly like the things that go bump in the night and a way of finding out what is the scariest thing we've seen as a community. This would involve probably a spreadsheet which has two columns, one for quality and one for scary factor. Too much work? Not enough payoff? Pick it apart!

Maybe a straight 5 category system.

5 - Terrifying
4 - Really scary
3 - scary
2 - moments of scariness
1 - not at all scary

An interesting idea, Junior. I wasn't quite sure how to rank my own horror list here; I ranked it, roughly, from my favorite film down, but I was thinking I should have ranked it based on its horror/scary element, not on it overall appeal ?? Not sure.

Ranking by scariness would be interesting, especially considering how subjective it can be.  I think my list would look pretty different if I tried it from that angle.

EDIT: Also, I would have to add at #1, the scariest movie I've ever seen:  Jesus Camp.

For starters, we'll just rate them like any other film in the Ratings Project; and then we'll probably take the ones with a certain minimum average (7.00 or 7.50, if enough score that highly) and rate them as "horror" movies to generate to final Top 100 list.

Salem's Lot - Overrated and mostly dull * *
Deliverance - Best of this list. Didn't consider it horror, but yeah, it pretty much defines Survival Horror. * * *
1408 - Horrible. Uninteresting at first and then it just gets worse. John Cusack needs people to act off his indifference * 1/2
Pet Sematary - Kind of okay, but also kind of silly. * * 1/2
The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - Laughable at first, ultimately detestable. * 1/2
The Crazies (2010) - I barely remember it and I watched it last year * *
The People under the Stairs - Laughable, but in a fun way. Not as good as Shocker for laughable badness. *
The Amityville Horror - Dated. Bad. And the remake is equally horrible. * 1/2
When a Stranger Calls - Great beginning and then very by the book. Same for the sequel. * *
Silent Night, Bloody Night - Invalidates the entire list. 1/2

I just placed them in terms of overall favourite as opposed to perceived spookiness. I figured I'd order them in what I would want to watch most as opposed to most likely to make me shriek. Some stuff that is borderline horror genre but I needed some better films on my list  :P

Aliens
Young Frankenstein
Let The Right One In
Jaws
Screamers
Predator
The Silence of the Lambs
Alien
28 Days Later
Take Shelter
Sunshine
The Skin I Live In
Black Swan
The Terminator
Shaun of The Dead
I Saw The Devil
Frankenstein
The Thing
King Kong
Gremlins 2
The Cabin in The Woods
Se7en
Buried
Psycho
The Shining
28 Weeks Later
Tremors
Red State
The Evil Dead
They Live
Bubba Ho-Tep
Shutter Island
The Blair Witch Project
Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil
The Exorcist
Army of Darkness
Dawn of the Dead(2004)
Black Death
I Am Legend
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter
Species
The Devils Advocate

When Devils Advocate makes it onto a list that's a sign you've run out of films. Other more standard/classic stuff like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street , etc. didn't make it onto the list as I don't know that I've ever finished one as I get bored with them pretty quick. Everyone seems to have their own definition of some of the more fringe choices, Jurassic Park made it onto a few lists and is my favourite movie though it didn't make it onto mine. I can certainly see the case being made for it but never really thought of it as horror.

Silent Night, Bloody Night - Invalidates the entire list. 1/2

Not be confused with Silent Night, Deadly Night which gave us This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5CtOCZxrpc#noexternalembed) spectacular scene.

Just about 500 titles have been nominated to date, with no mention yet of Salem's Lot, Deliverance, 1408, Pet Sematary, The Hills Have Eyes (2006), The Crazies (2010), The People under the Stairs, The Amityville Horror, When a Stranger Calls, or Silent Night, Bloody Night — all of which appeared on this list (http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/gallery/top_50_scary_movies/).

I'm rather fond of The People Under the Stairs.  It is so ridiculous and over the top that I am almost forced to enjoy it.  But not a top 100 for me (or maybe even 200).

The rest of them, with the exception of Deliverance, are all pretty bland.  The Hills Have Eyes remake has a few moments but the rest could probably be skipped.

Really curious to see how much of this list I still have to see once we've completed it. I wouldn't be surprised if Ive only seen 35 of the movies we pick; I wouldn't be surprised if Ive seen 90 of them.

I think Martyrs is a little more intense and surprised me at its quality a bit more. There's a reason why they're so close to each other, though.
