A prolific and popular director in his home country, making 13 films between 1980 and 2000 before his death in 2001, aged 53, Somai is almost unknown in the west.

Somai is a director who made some very great films, who had a very definite style, and who was a truly individual talent. In Japan hes very well known, and hes regarded as an influence on some of the most important contemporary Japanese directors. Hes never been recognised as an auteur and yet he clearly is one hes somebody whose work needs to be discussed. - Chris Fujiwara

The focus of Episode 20 of They Shot Pictures is on Shinji Somai (http://theyshotpictures.com/somai/)

Moving, for sure. One of the great films of the 90's.
