Title: Shows you gave up on
Post by: philip918 on August 28, 2016, 05:11:03 PM
Masters of Sex
Loved the first season, but dropped out only three episodes into the second season. Never looked back.

Justified
Season five was bad enough we dropped out halfway through and didn't come back even though people say season six was a return to form.

Mildred Pierce
Literally debated watching each episode since none of them quite grabbed me and none of them seemed to point toward an actual story. Got through four out of five and just didn't care enough to finish it off.

I stopped watching Hell On Wheels after season 3 of 4. Whichever season ended with a bear attack. Just got bored of it.

I'm a few episodes into The Walking Dead's latest season. Haven't watched it in months and not sure when or if I'll catch up. The show is just bad. Their idea of tension is a surprise zombie attack.

The Last Man On Earth. Stopped after season 2 episode 1 i think. One of the most unlikable characters I've seen on tv.

I know there's more but i can't think of them right now.

I think you're in the wrong thread, because this must be your list of greatest shows of the 21st Century.

Silicon Valley (I want to give it another shot, though)
The Walking Dead (made it to the beginning of Season 3)
The Wire (made it halfway through Season 3, I will rewatch it at some point)

I think I made it through like eight seasons of Grey's Anatomy at some point. Haven't returned to How to Get Away with Murder after the first season.

Also gave up on Dexter and Weeds after a season each.

Banshee
Bailed halfway through season 3 after a couple major female character deaths in short order. I get one was due to the actress getting a role on another show, but they still annoyed me and felt cheap.

When I was in my pre-teens I used to religiously watch a ton of crime procedurals on networks- Law & Order, CSI etc. Now I steer clear of those (for the most part) in favor of more serialized shows.

I dropped it in 5. Which is amazing considering how much I initially liked it. I even liked season 1!

Not counting shows I abandoned in season 1

Luther (season 3)
Modern Family (season 5)
Secret Diary of a Call Girl (season 2)
True Detective (season 2)
Castle (season 2)
Glee (season 2)
Homeland (season 4)
The Big Bang Theory (season 5)
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (season 2)

And those are only the ones I've definitely dropped, I'm not counting stuff like Buffy which I do intend to finish at some point (I stopped early in season 4). I'm a bit of a completionist, I even stuck with Dexter through the end just because of my deep affection for the first two seasons (and I even liked season 5, kinda, not anything after that though).

I'm curious about people abandoning The Wire in the middle of season 3, that's such a great season !

Shows I Gave Up On

Games Of Thrones (I tried twice to watch that show from the start, got about 3 eps in twice, before I gave up ;D)
True Detective (Season 2) (Got about 6 eps in before I gave up, not watching this guff ;D)
Heroes (Season 2) (Loved Season 1, just couldn't get into season 2 onwards, or the crappy re-boot)

Shows I Enjoyed Watching, But Haven't Be Able To Complete The Series
(Sometimes They Can't Find A Channel In The UK)

Justified (Seasons 5 & 6)
Weeds (Season 4 onwards)
Dexter (Season 3 onwards)
Boardwalk Empire (Season 3 onwards)

Shows Which Are Highly Rated But I Haven't Seen

Breaking Bad
House Of Cards
The Shield
Treme
Mad Men
Lost
Suits

I'm sure there are others, recommendations would be nice :)

How much more do you have to go?  It's been years since I've watched The Wire, so I would want to start at the beginning again.  Maybe we each set a personal goal from when we'll finish the series.

Well done you got to episode 3 of GoT. Decided it was hobbitty tosh after 2.  ;D

I watched all the series of Justifed on Now tv.

Broadwalk Empire should have been perfect. It was dreary.

That strikes me as a matter of logistic barriers and not something you gave up on.

I'm curious how many of these picks are just shows they never got around to seeing rather than shows they actively decided to stop watching.

Mad Men - episode one turned me off
Peaky Blinders - didn't carry on after the first season
Justified - Tried to watch it twice... lost interest both times after about 3 episodes. Actually, I lost interest in episode one, but waited to see if it might grab me. Really wanted to like it.
X-Files - I was a dedicated viewer back when it aired, but tried rewatching it and stopped after season 1... feel like it probably doesn't get good until season 4 or something, but don't want to jump ahead and do want to slog through.
How to get away with murder - one episode
Boardwalk Empire - season 1 and done.
Archer - couple of episodes
Narcos - one episode.

Mad Men - episode one turned me off

Did you get turned off by Don Draper "predicting' Xerox machines? That actually almost made me give up on the show. Thankfully they never do anything like it again.

I don't remember that specifically, but that does sound annoying. No, mostly I was just turned off by Don Draper himself... I thought "do I really want to follow this character for a series?"

Me too and I'm a political junky. I hate the cynical view of government. I'll take my political shows in the optimistic form like West Wing.

I used a minimum threshold of 5 episodes, because there are other shows I tried but didn't stick with but those didn't feel like enough time had been spent to count as a "drop".

There are other shows I haven't finished or stayed caught up with, but would still go back to if I had time, but these are shows I actively chose to drop. Some of them I loved at their peak, others I thought were ok at best.

Program - last season completed
The Office (US) - season 7
Parks and Recreation - season 5
American Idol - season 13
Rectify - dropped in season 1
Rescue Me - season 2
The Newsroom - season 1
Masters of Sex - dropped in season 1
House of Cards - season 2
Orange is the New Black - season 2
Homeland - season 2

If you didn't get a chance to watch the series finale of The Office, I would recommend seeking that out. While the last few season got increasingly terrible that last episode tied it all back together and it felt like The Office again. There is a quote Andy makes at near the end that gets me every time.

Archer - couple of episodes

This is one I fell for in a big way. It's spoofery clicked with me. While the similar spoof show Bojack Horseman I struggled to get through the first episode.

Honestly, I'm more impressed at the shows I finished, rather than gave up on.  I gave up on Hill Street Blues in the 80s because I no longer had access to a TV.  I gave up on Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Little House on the Prairie, Taxi (which I regret), I Dream of Jeanie, Bewitched, The Jeffersons and many more over the years.  However, I finished The Brady Bunch (really), MASH, the Muppet Show, Newhart, Lost (unfortunately), Avatar: The Last Airbender, The West Wing, The Gilmore Girls, and many more.  I'm pretty sure I've given up on more than I finished.

The Returned (English)-- I think I'll try the original version, sounds like people liked that better
Once Upon a Time-- Got bored after the first season, gave up after the second.
Jane the Virgin-- After five episodes, I think I get the idea.  Cute, but I have no confidence it will go anywhere interesting.
24-- I just couldn't deal with the torture, and by the middle of the third season, it was clear that it would be a larger part of the series.
Bones-- I watched five seasons, mostly for my wife.
Curb Your Enthusiasm-- It was funny for a couple seasons, and then the humor grew stale for me.
The Simpsons-- Haven't we all given up on this?
Daredevil-- The first season was okay, but I couldn't get into the second.

Smallville - Got tired of it never delivering
Grey's Anatomy - Started great but became a parody of itself
Every CSI-like series ever - It's always the same thing
Masters of Sex - I have no animus to start the second season
Boardwalk Empire - Season 3 was one of the best things ever but 4 became just too bad. Never started 5.
Justified - I cannot justify starting Season 2.
Oz and 24- Maybe some day ?

Season 2 of Justified is up there with the best seasons of television I've watched.  I liked the show more or less all the way to the end but this is where it peaked.

I agree.  While season 1 felt a bit like it was doing something like Dexter for a bit, I kept watching through Season 2 which really nailed it.  I never finished season 3 but am going to go back one day and watch season 2 again and then try to finish.

Supernatural season 7ish.  The show was fun at first, then got too serious for itself.

Downtown Abbey.  Main character I believe the show was based on leaves.  ("Oh Matthew")

I've never seen 'Downton Abbey', but I've watched the three series of the Spanish  'Gran Hotel' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2006421/). I can only describe it as a period drama mixed with Dallas or Dynasty, or one of those 80's soaps. It's brilliantly bonkers with each episode ending with a cliffhanger. The through line is the relationship of the young couple, she the daughter of the wealthy hotel owners, trapped in a loveless, abusive marriage, he a lowly poor staff worker. Never able to get together or escape the hotel for a life with each other.
