Title: Holiday Meal Favorite?
Post by: oldkid on December 25, 2016, 03:53:34 PM
When you are having a holiday meal, which traditional favorite do you prefer?  Or do you insist upon something distinctly non-traditional?

Our traditional Christmas dinner goes :
- Smoked salmon with blinis or toast / oysters for the few who like them
- Boudin blanc with cooked apples (not sure if there's a fancier name for that)
- Fruit salad with a traditional family thing (from the North of France) called Coquille, which is basically brioche with raisins

I'm not the biggest fan of boudin blanc, but this has been the Christmas meal for all my life, so that's what Christmas is to me. In fact we split it this year between the 24th and the 25th (the dessert got paired with capon on the 24th, and got replaced by an icy variation on the yule log for the 25th) and it didn't feel quite right.

I would prefer ham, but for a few years my mom has made prime rib for Christmas. And it's not like I can complain about free prime rib...

My mom always made a lasagna. My wife's family has always done the same, so that is a tradition maintained.

Steak, potatoes, veggies.

That's how I am with stuffing.  I really don't like it, never have, even though my wife makes a masterful version of it.  But it's part of "christmas"-- always has been, always will be.

Something about a great ham, particularly for breakfast. We had one with hash brown casserole and then just found ourselves picking at the ham for the rest of the morning. I wanted to bring some to our Christmas matinee movie.

I'm with you!

Ham and hashbrown casserole is what I do for Christmas dinner. I also have turkey for those that don't like ham.

You no like stuffing, oldkid?! That's my favorite thing at Thanksgiving. :)

Mrs. oldkid's favorite as well.  And she makes a great one.  With red peppers and chicken broth and spices...  Sounds great.  Just never cared for it.

I don't hold to any tradition.  when I lived in San Francisco, Thanksgiving or Christmas was usually together with a small group of friends in Chinatown or an Indian restaurant since they were always open.  If by chance I get home with family, they will normally do a Turkey.  This xmas was in Germany, we did beef and veggies, chinese style and a bottle of red wine

The dish I always want for Christmas is my mum's bean salad.
