Title: Predict the 2017 Oscar Winners...
Post by: MattDrufke on February 19, 2017, 05:00:01 PM
I know some of us don't love the Oscars, but we all love games!

Submit your entry for the winners by start of Oscars on Sunday. One point for every right answer. I'll find something dumb for the winner to have... so there are PRIZES!

I'm surprised how often Toni Erdmann appears here. Doesn't strike me as an Oscars pick, even without the political circumstances pushing The Salesman.

Again I disagree. I don't think they like to be told what they like in that category. Best Documentary is normally what gets that persuasion.

I'll eat my words if I'm wrong!

Isn't Toni Erdmann the "doing what we're told" pick though ? It's by far the most critically acclaimed of these.

There was one good song in La La Land and it was "I Ran" by A Flock of Seagulls.

While I like all the songs in La La Land (well, except the John Legend one), its strengths are more in the score than in the songs, as opposed to, say, Moana. Or, for those who like crappy 80's music made by uninspired teenagers, Sing Street.

To be clear, I like the music in Sing Street, because I think it's appropriate to the character making it : decent and fun but uninspired and derivative. The love for Drive It Like You Stole It is truly a mystery to me, outside of the context of the film that is.

Drive It Like You Stole It is great and the clip just makes it all the more amazing.

I hope the people voting for Huppert are right, but I do not think they are.

Is there any talk of Fantastic Beasts at this point? Or are you trusting an educated minority of people who are allowed to vote in that category?

No, he's right.

Going for the full La La Land sweep.

It is nominated for 14, it would have to win 12 to break the record, but it can only win 13 because it's nominated twice in the song category.  (Is that correct?)  I certainly don't think it's going to break the record (I give it zero chance for Ryan Gosling and Best Original Screenplay).

All I know is this is the first time since 2008 (2007 movies), which was the first time in life, where my favorite film of the year was actually the Oscar front-runner.  For one Oscar season, I get to NOT be the film snob of the office.

I guess I misspoke, as I'm "only" predicting 11 wins. You're wrong to give it 0 chance in screenplay, it's a pretty open category. I'm predicting it only misses Gosling and mixing.

Hmmm, so the final tally for Toni Erdmann turned out to be:

1. It lost to I, Daniel Blake at Cannes, which the critics' cabal practically dubbed a crime against humanity, or at least a sign of how out of touch the Cannes jury was, but then ...

2. It lost to Elle at the Golden Globes ...

3. It lost to Son of Saul at the BAFTAs and ...

4. It lost to The Salesman at the Oscars.

I, Daniel Blake is the only one of those I haven't seen ... I actually liked Toni Erdmann slightly more than the other three, which I didn't like much at all, but with all of the contrarian hate being fashionably devoted to La La Land, I thought I'd mix it up a bit.
