Title: Pink Floyd Songs Tournament
Post by: MartinTeller on May 01, 2017, 12:01:34 PM
I thought I'd give this a try. I don't know how many big Pink Floyd fans we have here. I love them. And I mean LOVE them. They were my first music obsession. "Money" was the first thing I learned to play on the guitar. Over the years I drifted away from Pink Floyd, and I'd kind of forgotten how much I adore their music. But recently, going through the massive "Early Years" box set, I was reminded how much I dig the Floyd, especially that early stuff.

I've got 128 songs in this tournament, roughly seeded based on a popularity poll I found and my own perception of what people seem to like. Everything here from the first singles through The Final Cut. There's some rarities and B-sides in the mix too. It just didn't seem right to include the post-Waters stuff. I also omitted the solo pieces from Ummagumma.

This is gonna be a tough tournament for me. I adore most of these songs.

My picks:

1. Right off the bat, a tough choice for me. Obviously Numb is our #1 seed here. But boy, I'm such a fan on The Final Cut. It was the first CD I ever owned! Throwing an underdog vote to Your Possible Pasts.

2. I'll probably be voting for a lot of the Syd stuff, but while I like CaaCB, it's not especially distinct. Voting for Burning Bridges which is lovely and haunting.

3. Yeah, Brick 3 is powerful and has that cool keyboard bit, but Paintbox is pretty much the reason I wanted to do this tournament. Such a great, overlooked tune. And a rare chance for Rick Wright to have the spotlight. What a weird, baroque little ditty. Definitely Paintbox for me.

4. That cat's something I can't explain! I love a song about a cat, and Syd's goofy weirdness wins out over the slight (but perfectly apt) closer to The Wall. Lucifer Sam

5. I find Mother (the song, not my own mother) a bit annoying for some reason. Maybe it's the "break my balls" bit, or maybe it's just a little overplayed. Still, it's got some fantastic work from Gilmour and Stethoscope never really clicked with me. I like the first 30 seconds but then the psychedelic freakout part is pretty boring. Mother gets my vote.

6. Ooh this is a toughie. On the Run, one of the great headphone tracks with all the effects and that neato pulsing synth. And Green Is the Colour, so delicate and gentle. I love those melodies. Gotta go Green.

7. To be honest, I'm not big on Dark Side of the Moon. If you consider the classic Floyd era to be from Meddle through The Wall, Dark Side is probably my least favorite of those albums. And while I love the music of Eclipse, "list"-style lyrics ("all that you ___, and all that you ____, all that you ____ and all you ____") don't appeal to me. Meanwhile, Atom Heart Mother is an album that took me a couple of decades to warm up to but now I really embrace it. Another underdog vote for Summer '68.

8. I dunno, the only thing HBPM has going for it is that drum beat. The rest of it is just too fiddly. I still like it, but the short but sweet Goodbye Cruel World walks away with this one.

I hear a lot of different styles in Pink Floyd, and the best is when they are all mixed expertly together.  You have Syd Barett's psychadelic 60's, Roger Water's lyrical concept rock, David Gilmore's expert guitar rock, Richard Wright's mind-bending keyboard rock, and then you have the blend.  Each of these were given their full opportunity to shine in various stages of Pink Floyd, but when they all worked together, mixed by an expert like Alan Parsons, it works best.

Comfortably Numb v. Your Possible Pasts
I think that The Final Cut, when the band is exhausted after The Wall's various forms and Roger finally got control, is the worst Pink Floyd album.  There is only one song I care for on the album, and Your Possible Pasts isn't it.  It is horribly unfair to pit it against one of their most popular, best produced songs.  But there it is.

Burning Bridges v. Candy
Burning is one of the Dave Gilmore specials, with Wright doing his organ bit.  Beautiful and soothing.  Candy is okay, but it isn't one of Syd's best.

Paintbox v. Another Brick 3
Both excellent songs.  Paintbox is very 60s, but not as Syd-influenced as others, written and sung by Richard Wright.  It's really well done. Another Brick 3 is excellent, hard rock version of the popular song, but rather than an individual song, I think it fits better in the sequence from Empty Spaces to Goodbye Cruel World.  It's good, but it makes me want to hear the rest of the sequence.  I'm going for Paintbox.

Lucifer Sam v. Outside the Wall
Outside the Wall is a strange song, but perfectly suited as the intro/outro of the Wall, giving a sense of the other world, opposite to the chaotic rock inside the wall.  Lucifer Sam has a great couple of hooks but seems a bit dependent on the James Bond theme.  Going for Outside.

Mother v. Stethoscope
Not a fan of Stethoscope.  It turns me off right from the "doctor, doctor" it opens with.  Mother is it's opposite. It allows the acoustic guitar to have a long time to coax us, soothe us, while the lyrics bite and jab.   Genius.

On the Run v. Green is the Color
Two Pink Floyd opposites.  On the Run is all sound and chaos and panting breath, while Green is quiet and soothing, a precursor to the first half of Wish You Were Here.   It depends on my mood which I'd choose.  I'll give it to On the Run because of the work involved and the fact that this is the song you want to put on your new system to see how well it works.

68 v. Eclipse
68 is attempting to capture the sound of the era, but none of it sounds like Pink Floyd in any of their manifestations.  Eclipse is the stirring climax to one of a few PF masterpieces, in which the whole album feels like it is building up to this point.  68 is fine, but it doesn't hold a candle to Eclipse.

Heart Beat v. Goodbye
I've never heard Heart Beat, Pig Meat before.  Kind of a lead up to On the Run, but not as well mixed.  Goodbye is the perfect conclusion to the first half of The Wall, short, very simple and ends cutting the final word short.  Heart Beat is Roger working up to his genius, Goodbye is in the middle of it.

Great idea Martin ! Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but I'll admit that after the initial discovery and exploration of their whole discography, I pretty much settled on the songs I liked and never listened to the other ones again. That's the case for 6 of the songs here, with only two match-ups featuring two songs that are still on my main playlist. But hey, maybe I can rediscover some forgotten gems here.

1. The Final Cut is an album I feel conflicted about. It's like The Wall's ugly stepchild: same sensibilites and inspiration, but less coherence and even more self-indulgence. There's definitely some great stuff in there (When the Tigers Broke Free, The Fletcher Memorial Home), but it's not a favorite of mine overall, though it's the last Pink Floyd album I'd qualify as "good". Your Possible Pasts is fine and all, but again, it feels like a song that wasn't quite good enough to make it into The Wall. I'm not actually as big a fan of Comfortably Numb as most, but this is not close at all (in that I wouldn't put it in the top 10, maybe not even top 20 for PF songs), but it's still an easy choice: Comfortably Numb.

2. Obscured by Clouds is generally underrated, but Burning Bridges is not a song I remembered, probably because it sounds a lot like Free Four, just not as good. Still, it's a nice one, I might get it back in rotation. I feel pretty similarly about the Syd one here too, which is like an Astronomy Domine that never lifts off. Tough choice here... I'll go with Burning Bridges.

3. Don't think I'd actually heard Paintbox before. It's a pretty cool, quirky one, that doesn't get too crazy and dissonant but has that lovely psychedelic undercurrent nonetheless. I don't really think of Part 3 as a distinct song anyway, so Paintbox it is.

4. This is where we get into a bit of trouble. The Wall is my second favorite album (after DSOTM), but it works much better as an album than a collection of songs. I have a feeling I'm going to be voting against The Wall a lot just because of the "song v song" structure, when it doesn't really reflect how I feel. That being said, I do like Lucifer Sam a lot, even though it's only the 5th or 6th best song in Piper.

5. Mother is perhaps not the best single in The Wall, but it's the song the whole album revolves around. Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk is very cool, but also in the middle when it comes to Piper (Interstellar Overdrive manages the "psychedelic freakout" Martin describes much better), and I'm not voting against Mother.

6. The worst song on my favorite album ever (and another one that suffers out of context) vs a nice ballad from More I had completely forgotten... but it is nice. Mmmmh. Very tough choice, I'll got with Green is the Colour, because On the Run, though it's excellent in its context just doesn't works at all as a song, and the structure of the tournament here leads me to consider things that way.

7. Well now that's just cruel. Eclipse is my ringtone and what I'm voting for: it's a glorious culmination to Brain Damage that still works gangbusters on its own (but unlike Martin, I loooove list-type lyrics, love them)... but it hurts to eliminate Summer '68 so early. Atom Heart Mother is the great PF album most people don't know about, and this song is one of the big reasons why.

8. Yeah, I didn't remember Heart Beat, Pig Meat at all... and it's ok I guess, but Goodbye, Cruel World takes that one easily.

We've got a couple of early upsets in the works! Exciting! I'm tickled that Paintbox is doing so well.

The Wall is my second favorite album (after DSOTM), but it works much better as an album than a collection of songs. I have a feeling I'm going to be voting against The Wall a lot just because of the "song v song" structure, when it doesn't really reflect how I feel.

That is an issue, I'm afraid. PF is often much more about albums than songs. It also doesn't seem quite right to pit side-length tracks (Echoes, Atom Heart Mother) against more traditional songs. But just follow your instincts as best as you can. It's all just for fun anyway.

Is 6 voters enough (including two who apparently only voted in one bracket each?) enough to warrant continuing? I'll let this batch run a few more hours and see if there's any more interest.

I just noticed you said you excluded any post-Waters stuff, which is a shame if only because of High Hopes.

How would ties be handled by the way ?

Part of it is I'm personally not a fan of post-Waters Floyd (although I did see them twice). I bailed after Momentary Lapse.

How would ties be handled by the way ?

Higher seed, but I will wait as long as possible for a tiebreaker vote.

I'm unfamiliar with most of their work, so have to listen to each song and go by initial reaction. If you do decide to keep it going, I'll try and vote within a few days, but I may be too slow for this. Either way, I'm enjoying the discussions

I see the post-waters stuff as just another phase, one that I personally love, even if it doesn't reach the highs of their 70s work.  And the latter stuff is better for determining song-by-song (except their last album, which is an odd duck, anyway).   Even as The Final Cut I think of as a mostly Roger Waters solo, even so Momentary Lapse is a mostly David Gilmour solo.  The Division Bell is fantastic, with some missteps.  These I would consider to be the best of that period:

Well, the brackets are already seeded and that was a big undertaking, so... sorry. And it worked out very nicely to 128 songs, I only had to throw in one oddball (a rare group recording of Syd's "Vegetable Man") to even things out. Maybe someone can do a separate tournament of the post-Waters stuff.

I'll leave this batch running a little longer. Would love to have Sandy's participation.

1. Boy, I really enjoy Scarecrow but I don't think I can vote for it against one of the best songs on DSotM. The saxophone alone is enough for Us and Them to win this one.

2. Argh! This is especially hard because these two have a kind of similar vibe. I just have more affection for A Pillow of Winds, and it's more consistently great.

3. Young Lust might be my least favorite song on The Wall. It's just rather bland cock rock to me. Like I could see Van Halen doing it. San Tropez is absolutely a throwaway filler track, but I'll take it over the competition. It's a fun little ditty.

4. Oh it's one of those forgettable instrumentals from More. Up against one heck of a great instrumental from DSotM. No contest, Any Colour all the way.

5. Things aren't looking too good for my beloved Final Cut. I really like Post War Dream, but it also exemplifies the worst of Roger's now I'm really really quiet.... AND NOW I'M REALLY REALLY LOUD tendencies. And up against Echoes? No chance, I'm afraid. Echoes is absolute genius.

6. It always annoyed me to no end that the only way to hear WtTBF (short of bootlegs) was to watch the movie. Very nice that it finally got an official release as a bonus on Final Cut. So mournful and majestic, some of Roger's finest lyrics. Crying Song is one of more better tunes off More, but I'm definitely going with Tigers.

7.  Well, this is too bad. Scream Thy Last Scream is delightful, one of Syd's most elaborate flights of fancy. It just works on every level. I'd love to vote for it. But Animals is my favorite PF album, and it's going to take a lot to get me to vote against one of its three main tracks. God, that riff at the ending gives me chills. Very sorry Syd, but it's gotta be Sheep.

8. Animals's PotW bookends are a little easier for me to vote against. Lyrically I think I like part 2 a little more. So I'll give a vote to Let There Be More Light, an excellent slice of space rock psychedelia.

Us and Them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKiLEgAzFDQ#no) vs. Scarecrow (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVy_nwpCpmA#no)
I find that I am comparing some of the songs with songs that aren't being matched.  Scarecrow is good, but it feels like a lesser Bike, which is a fantastic mix of the childish, bouncy tune and masterful overlays.  And how can we compare it to Us and Them, a song I thought was "too slow" when I first heard it in college, but now I appreciate every nanoscecond of?

A Pillow of Winds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uThZ1uuLLWM#no) vs. Crumbling Land (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZVWrh_oiHo#no)

I've never heard Crumbling Land, but it's a classic Floyd song, no mistake.  I love the build up, the soft sounds, the 60's vibe, it's all there.  But Pillow of Winds is one of my favorites of all time.  The more I hear Meddle, the more I love it, better than Dark Side.   I suppose I could listen to it another hundred times.

Young Lust (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiVPC8QHsQM#no) vs. San Tropez (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv5uuhkS4j8#no)
Head to head, my two least favorites on their respective albums.  The guitar and vocals on Young Lust are fantastic, but the lyric refrain is simply offensive and I've never gotten over that, even though I recognize that it's part of a larger story.  I appreciate it's place in the whole, but not as a separate song.  San Tropez is bouncy and breezy and fun and the piano is wonderful, but it takes me out of the album, which is dreamy and haunting.  As an individual song, I guess San Tropez wins.

Any Colour You Like (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_83urK9rO4U#no) vs Main Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HCJHpWH8x0#no)
Interesting match.  Main Theme always sounded like one of their experiments, but without a core.  Any Colour you Like feels like a bridge to get us from Us and Them to Brain Damage, but I never think of it as it's own song.  However Any Colour is better produced and tighter, so I give it the lead here.

Echoes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53N99Nim6WE#no) vs. The Post War Dream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRCfvCKRcZE#no)
The Post War Dream is an excellent Roger Waters song with David Gilmour on guitar.  It reminds me of the best of Amused Ourselves to Death, my favorite Waters solo album. Still, it's a very well-done song, great Waters-preach.  But you can't put it against Echoes!  One of the greatest epic songs of all all time?

When the Tigers Broke Free (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRBFRNW074g#no) vs. Crying Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcsMwaQgW4Q#no)
When the Tigers Broke Free is the best of Waters-preach.  A tight, orchestrated sermon with a great punch at the end.  I struggle to know whether the album would be better with it.  I'll never know now.  Crying Song is pleasant with good guitar work, but it doesn't hold a candle to Tigers.

Sheep (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GE-sfEbJ7I#no) vs. Scream Thy Last Scream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rQb81z7ciI#no)
I don't remember hearing Scream, although I must have.  The core song doesn't work for me, but the instrumental work is fantastic chaotic buildup.  Sheep has always been too long for me.  Mind you, this is from a guy who adores Shine on You Crazy Diamond, both parts.  But Sheep is too repetitive, and I could never really hear it the way I wanted to, no matter how much I turned up the volume. On the other hand, Sheep develops the ideas of Animals best and has a great hook.  So it goes to Sheep.

Pigs on the Wing (Part One) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd1y-DDpASk#no) vs. Let There Be More Light (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLy7h4g8ImI#no)
I've always enjoyed Pigs on the Wing, but each part seemed too slight to me, to make a whole song.  I've usually listened to the two parts back to back on my playlists.  Light seems to be an answer to Intersteller Overdrive, with lyrics.  I like it, good stuff.

I don't have a problem with good cock rock. I like Peaches and PJ Harvey. I like "Young Lust".

1. I'm with oldkid on Scarecrow being a lesser (but still fun) version of Bike. Not that it matters anyway against Us (us...us...) and Them (them...them...)

2. Hey, I get to vote for an Obscured by Clouds, which might as well be titled Obscured by All These Other Great Albums But It's Still A Good One Guys. Both good songs, I'm now realizing that I've never listened to the Zabriskie Point soundtrack, but my preference goes to the more languid, distinctly Floydian A Pillow of Winds.

3. San Tropez is a favorite of mine, though I like Young Lust quite a bit, especially the way it starts. Again, given a choice, I'll generally lean towards the relaxed side of PF.

4. Any Colour You Like is Wright's masterpiece. The More soundtrack is interesting because it's the start of the post-Syd era, with the band exploring and experimenting, trying to forge itself a new identity, which ended up getting them to the brilliance of Atom Heart Mother... but More and Ummagumma, while not without faults and hosting a few hidden gems (more on that later), aren't quite there yet. I guess I'm not going with the slow tune this time.

5. A shame for The Post War Dream, which I forgot earlier but is possibly the best song in The Final Cut. Either that or... well we'll get to it in a bit. Anyway, it's facing Echoes, which is at least in the top 5 for me, so let's all say goodbye to The Post War Dream, whatever happened to it.

6. This is a much stronger batch than the last one overall. When The Tigers Broke Free really ought to have been in The Wall, something that was rectified by the film (Top 100 Club cross-promotion!). Crying Song is one of the hidden gems I was mentioning earlier... this is tough. A fight between languid dreaminess and stirring grief... it's so manipulative, but the choirs just get me, so it goes to When the Tigers Broke Free.

7. I had definitely never heard Scream Thy Last Scream. It's very Syd Floyd, but without the joy or the grandeur of Piper's best tracks, so it easily goes to Sheep, which I think is my favorite song on Animals.

8. Pigs on the Wing is nice, but Let There Be More Light is Astronomy Domine/Interstellar Overdrive Redux, and I love me some spatial Floyd.

By the way, Young Lust is supposed to be cock rock, that's kinda the point. I don't find it bland though.

I consider Wright's masterpiece to be Sysiphus (1-4) from the Ummagumma album.  Which I don't expect to be on this bracket.

Us and Them vs. Scarecrow
A Pillow of Winds vs. Crumbling Land
Young Lust vs. San Tropez - San Tropez is good, but I am a lusty guy
Any Colour You Like vs Main Theme
Echoes vs. The Post War Dream - You really are putting Final Cut tracks against tough competition.
When the Tigers Broke Free vs. Crying Song
Sheep vs. Scream Thy Last Scream - I had not heard Scream Thy Last Scream before, very good.
Pigs on the Wing (Part One) vs. Let There Be More Light - Really like Let There Be More Light, but I connect more with Pigs

I consider Wright's masterpiece to be Sysiphus (1-4) from the Ummagumma album.  Which I don't expect to be on this bracket.

I'll give it another listen if it comes up, but Sisyphus (all of it) really embodies the "failed experiments" phase of PF for me. A dry run for Atom Heart Mother that didn't work out, but I can see how if it work for you, it really does. I'd put Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave Grooving With a Pict* in the "insane thing that somehow worked out to be great" camp of Ummagumma.

*I don't know wheter I should be proud or ashamed that I didn't have to look this up. Well, I do know, which is why I'm pointing it out, but I suspect some would disagree.

I agree that Sisyphus is experimental and arty, but it really works for me.  I'll listen to it on it's own, when I don't find that same interest for Colour.  Several Small Species is also a classic, and fun, and brilliant.

Title: Re: Pink Floyd Songs Tournament
Post by: MartinTeller on May 06, 2017, 02:01:49 PM
1. This is pretty much a gimme. As I was putting this together, I ended up with a list of 127 songs. 128 makes perfect tournament brackets, so I went to look for one more. I landed on this Barrett tune that was recorded by the group but never released until recently. It's not one of my favorites from Syd and it's not that produced that well. Shine On 1-5, on the other hand, is an astonishing piece of work and will likely (and perhaps rightfully) decimate all comers. Sorry, Veggie Man, you're a sacrificial lamb.

2. Cirrus Minor is one of the better tunes from More, but it drags. It feels like it should be half as long as it is. I'm delighted by Apples and Oranges, a great pop song with Syd's singular weirdness.

3. Why did I set up this tournament? It keeps forcing me to make painful choice. Point Me at the Sky is a great single, thoroughly enjoyable. But StCftHofS, come on. Hypnotic and fascinating. Tough choice, but going with Set the Controls.

4. Not now, not ever John. My least favorite on Final Cut by a big margin. Annoys me on a lot of levels. Easy vote for the shambling, absurd Bike.

5. And Gold might be my least favorite on Obscured By Clouds. It's fine, it's just not my thing. And up against Pigs? Not a chance in hell.

6. Another really really hard choice. How do I compare these? I feel very protective of the Syd songs, but Thin Ice is so good. Love Gilmour's solo. Thin Ice it is.

7. This one's a real no-brainer, isn't it? Breathe

8. There's not much I like on side 4 of The Wall. In the Flesh is okay, but I prefer the less aggressive one that opens the album. And Cymbaline is just lovely as all get-out.

Went with all the top seeds, although in hindsight I realize the last bracket should be flipped in terms of more realistic seeding.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts IV) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54W8kktFE_o#no) vs. Vegetable Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fxPDelW9uk#no)
Vegetable Man is interesting and reminiscent of more recent grunge rock.  But it doesn't hold a candle to Shine On.

Apples and Oranges (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo5VMkZM580#no) vs. Cirrus Minor (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfPVM5dFlp8#no)
Apples and Oranges is a solid, but not exceptional Syd song.  Cirrus is a solid, but not exceptional spacey/nature song in the vein of Echoes (but more 'minor'). I'll lean toward Cirrus, because of the genre.

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbWOmh_rRq0#no) vs. Point Me at the Sky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSrE-V0pmMk#no)
I've never heard Point Me before and I like it's Beatles/Kinks sound.  But I've loved Set the Controls for a long time, so I'll have to lean toward that.

Bike (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PoLaX4IA_0#no) vs. Not Now John (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-5yy9nDk1s#no)
Not Now John is a great rock example of PF in the period of the Wall.  Better than Young Lust.  But Bike is one of Syd's artistic masterpieces, and I have to give it to him.

Pigs (Three Different Ones) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZM1WQKwpl0#no) vs. The Gold It's in the... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWhOd0ENVS8#no)
I just never cared for Pigs.  I don't know why.  The Gold sounds like a solo DG, but it's a keeper.

The Thin Ice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ciai1aZ_odg#no) vs. Flaming (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txICA1lOSwE#no)
I've always liked Flaming.  It's light, but a fun Syd song.  The power of The Thin Ice cannot be questioned, though.  It opens the door to The Wall proper and does so masterfully.

Breathe (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vddl9TK5RqU#no) vs. Speak to Me (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW-lXjOyUWo#no)
Strange to have these two songs up against each other.  I always considered Speak to Me to be an introduction to Breathe.  They work better together than separate.  I guess I'll give it to Breathe, which is the 'real' song.

Cymbaline (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ietkuUZwjpU#no) vs. In the Flesh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGGO9nPO0Po#no)
In the Flesh is one of the greatest stadium rock songs of all time, and a frightening realization of the consequence of isolationism.  That is all.

Martin and I posted at the same time, and our two posts indicate the greatness of Pink Floyd.  We both have "obvious" but opposing picks.  This is because Floyd has much excellence and can pull in all kinds of appreciators.
Title: Re: Pink Floyd Songs Tournament
Post by: Teproc on May 06, 2017, 02:56:22 PM
1. Don't think I had ever heard Vegetable Man. Like almost all early PF, it has a lot of energy going for it, but that's about it. Shine On You Crazy Diamond, while not my favorite Floydian epic, is still great, especially when considered as one unit.

2. These two songs are so different, it's hard to compare them ! Also, they're rather... minor. I feel like I'm repeating myself with all these Syd tracks: they all have a certain charming exuberance, but they're also very messy. Cirrus Minor is nothing special either, but as I said earlier, I have a taste for the quieter, dreamier songs, so there you go.

3. To be fair to Point me at the Sky, that's probably a good thing to do before you Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun. Also it's a pretty cool one, though it feels very Beatles-derivative. But Controls is one of PF's most iconic songs for a reason.

4. A tough one. I opened this bracket by takling somewhat disparagingly about The Final Cut, but it really is because it suffers from the comparison to The Wall. I could say Not Now John feels like a reject from that album, because it does... but hey, The Wall is one of the greatest albums of all time, and Not Now John is still very strong. Then there's Bike, which I've mentioned a few times already as the example of a dissonant Syd song that actually works. Part of it is that it actually goes somewhere, and it doesn't feel entirely random. Listening to the two while writing this convinced me: Bike it is.

5. A song from their most overrated album vs one from their most underrated one !
It sounds like I'm about to make a controversial pick, but in truth I still rank Animals over Obscured by Clouds, and Pigs (Three Different Ones) is fighting with Sheep (that sounds weird) for the n1 slot on there. The Gold It's in The? is good though, in a style that PF hasn't dabbled in that much.

6. Ugh. This bracket is tough. Flaming is great. It's probably Syd's best, lyrically speaking ? I'm still going to vote for The Thin Ice, but it hurts.

7. Hilarious to have these two paired against each other, since they're quite often paired as one single song. Easy Breathe, obviously, but Speak to Me is an essential intro to DSOTM... along with Breathe.

8. Cymbaline is a favorite of mine, but this is where the film version of The Wall starts to play a role (see also: The Trial). Even without that though, those opening riffs, and then Rick Wright coming in... so good. The choirs too, and the Roger Waters ranting... yeah I thought it was a hard choice but it really isn't: In the Flesh .

1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond - one of my favorite Floyd tunes
2. Cirrus Minor
3. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
4. Not Now John - Bike always annoyed me
5. The Gold It's in the... - because I love this song and figure Pigs will still win anyway (both are great)
6. The Thin Ice
7. Speak to Me
8. Cymbaline

1. Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 vs. Up the Khyber

It's hard not to be bored with Brick 2, right? But I'll gladly take it over this brief but annoying throwaway from More. I skip Khyber every time it comes up. Brick it is.

2. Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast vs. Embryo

Embryo was a late entry. I had "Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up" here but then I remembered it's just "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" under a different title. So I scrambled for a replacement. I couldn't believe I'd overlooked Embryo. A song that was played live a lot, but never appeared on an album, except for the compilation Works and a Harvest Records sampler. The first book of sheet music I ever owned was a Pink Floyd book, and it had this song in it, so I know it really well. I really love it, it would right in on Meddle or Obscured. As for APB, it's got some great parts but it never really comes together. It's never stuck with me (I couldn't hum a single part from memory) and frankly the "breakfast" noises kind of ruin it for me. Easy vote for Embryo

3. A Saucerful of Secrets vs. Pow R. Toc H.

Pow R starts out fantastic but it just breaks down into obnoxiousness. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the first 8-9 minutes of Saucerful, but that ending is just stunningly gorgeous. The live version from Pompeii (or the one off Ummagumma) is better, but the studio version is great too. This is tough because each of these is pretty much half an excellent song and half wankery. But Saucerful is more engrossing in general.

4. Arnold Layne vs. Mudmen

Mudmen is nice, but it's just an instrumental take on Burning Bridges. And Burning Bridges is already in round 2, so this is an easy vote for Arnold Layne, a supremely catchy Syd pop song about a perv.

5. Have a Cigar vs. The Gunner's Dream

I'm a big Roy Harper fan. Have a Cigar turned me on to him, and I think he's wonderful. And I like this song but it's the weakest on WYWH for me. Which isn't saying much, because there aren't a lot of songs on that album and they're all pretty damn good. Gunner's Dream though!! Those lyrics are amazing, and that sax solo, and I get goosebumps when I listen to it. It'll probably lose this matchup, but my heart is with Gunner.

6. Vera vs. Fat Old Sun

The Wall was the first record I ever bought (not counting a K-Tel compilation or two). 12-year-old me hated that whole Vera/Bring the Boys part. It felt like dumb filler. But now I think it's great. Vera is incredibly short but it's just lovely and heartbreaking. "Does anybody else in here feel the way I do?" has such a haunting ring to it. But boy, I also really enjoy Fat Old Sun. Another tough matchup. Argh.... I guess Vera but I'd love to pick both.

7. The Trial vs. Southampton Dock

The Trial is the opposite story from Vera. I used to loooove it and now I've kind of soured on it. It just grates me. But well.... I dunno, listening to it right now I don't dislike it as much as I thought I did. I appreciate the artistry and the theater of it, and I know it like the back of my hand. And I'm finding I don't love Southhampton Dock as much as I thought I did. It's great as a preamble to the title track, but on its own it's only okay. No, it's more than okay, but still I'm finding these two tracks on pretty equal footing when I thought it would be a slam dunk for me. I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm voting for The Trial. Ouch, that one hurt.

8. Careful with That Axe, Eugene vs. It Would Be So Nice

Jeez, another difficult choice. IWBSN is, like Paintbox, a superb Rick Wright track with a lot of delightful little ornate touches. And in the other corner, Eugene is so badass and huge. What do I prefer, the band jamming and exploring space as a tight unit, or crafting great pop ditties? I don't wanna choose, why did I do this to myself? Okay, okay... umm... gonna go with Nice mostly because it seems like the underdog to me and I want it to get at least one vote.

1. Pink Floyd going jazzy, which I enjoy but doesn't really add up to anything, vs Another Brick Part 2 ? Let's move on.

2. My first exposure to Pink Floyd was through Works, which was one of the CDs everyone in my (big) family could agree upon, so Embryo - while relatively obscure for most - is just part of the canon for me. It has a hypnotic quality, and a calming, relaxing one too. Alan's Psychedelical Breakfast never lived up to its promising title... it's ok, but the "languid songs eventually building up to a strong pay-off" is crowded already, and the pay-off isn't really that great either.

3. A Saucerful of Secrets is solid, but I like the live version from Ummagumma better, and it's up against the gloriously fun and weird Pow R. Toc H., which is one of the songs that make all the messy Syd experiments worth it. It reconciles the silly enthusiasm of Bike with the exploratory space rock of Astronomy Domine, which is just the best of both worlds in my book.

4. Mudmen is a typical Obscured song: not particularly remarkable, but very well executed and enjoyable. Arnold Layne, which is also on Works, is one I have more of a personal connection too (keeping in mind I had no idea what it was about for most of my time listening to it), so it gets my vote here, even though Mudmen is generally more in my wheelhouse.

5. The Gunner's Dream is everything that's wrong with The Final Cut. It's Roger Waters coasting with no particular inspiration... I see Martin mentioning lyrics, which... though I understood English by the time I got to The Final Cut, I had grown used to not paying attention to the meaning of lyrics all that much as a default, unless they really jump out to me, as the best Waters stuff does. I have no idea what this song is about, and I'm not about to listen to it again to figure it out. Speaking of lyrics jumping out at you, Have a Cigar has a ton of those ("Oh, by the way, which one's Pink ?") while being a lot more fun and interesting musically.

6. The Wall as a whole is not subject to the whole "not paying much attention to the meaning of lyrics", because they're all so striking. I saw the film pretty early on too (and loved it obviously), so that probably plays an important role. Anyway Vera is short but very powerful, even when I had no clue who Vera Lynn was. It's a shame I have to vote against Fat Old Sun, which always blends with Summer '68 in my mind, but in a good way.

7. I'm worried the amazing scene in the film will make me overestimate The Trial, but it's against a pretty lackluster Final Cut song anyway (nice title drop though), so not a big worry this time around.

8. Had never heard It Would Be So Nice before ! It's very charming ! But I'm afraid it gets the Axe anyway.

Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrxX9TBj2zY#no) vs. Up the Khyber (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSWy2L5qVBM#no)
As Roger Waters said, "Everyone needs a good protest song, even kids."  Let's face it, ABitW2 is overplayed, but it's catchy and smart.  Up the Khyber is breezy and completely forgettable.

Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9dK-r0htXI#no) vs. Embryo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI7ausgDjAw#no)
Alan's always seemed to me to be a Zappa experiment gone too far, where it is more boring than entertaining.  Embryo is great.  I don't know that I've heard it before, but the Middle Eastern vibe and the slight Several Small Species sound are fantastic.

A Saucerful of Secrets (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7RL1F7hqRc#no) vs. Pow R. Toc H. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX-G7Tpjx5U#no)
Pow R. is one of my favorites of the Barrett era, while Saucerful is my least favorite of the trilogy of space epics (including Intersteller Overdrive and Set the Controls).

Arnold Layne (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHO8dvEQpaI#no) vs. Mudmen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKSTu-HMPQ4#no)
Tough one.  Arnold is one of the tightest songs of the Barrett era, the one most likely to be heard on the radio.  It's solid lyrically and musically.  But I've always loved Mudmen with Gilmour's guitar front and center, a cool instrumental.  One of my favorites of Obscured.  I guess I'll give it to Arnold, the more complex song.

Have a Cigar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbdpv7G_PPg#no) vs. The Gunner's Dream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhFCywuSDMI#no)
I'm afraid Dream feels like a Wall leftover, while Cigar is unique and has a great hook.

Vera (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCawgpFg_Bg#no) vs. Fat Old Sun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-XBBE8_Wy0#no)
I like Vera in it's placement in The Wall, the theme of nostalgia mixing up with grief and anger, but it doesn't do much for me as a separate song, especially when Bring the Boys is the fitting conclusion to it.  Fat Old Sun is like one of the best David Gilmour solo works with some additional help from his friends.  Going for Sun.

The Trial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdzHBpxZWVM#no) vs. Southhampton Dock (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdQpshUr-EA#no)
The Trial is strange for a Floyd song, all dramatic and narrative and orchestra.  And it is completely brilliant, capping off the Wall with a touch of genius.  Dock is a fine Waters piece, but no genius there.

Careful with That Axe, Eugene (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8OE4gedQuc#no) vs. It Would Be So Nice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsSi1w1w9_0#no)
It Would be So Nice is a great song, I've not heard it before.  Beatles and Beach Boys influence and a great variety of sounds.  But Eugene has always been one of my favorites and it is so spooky and fun and gentle... very Floyd.  Love that song.

I was going to move on to the next batch, but we have two ties happening. I'll leave it open a few more hours and see if we get any more votes. I would hate to decide based on seeding, since the seeding was mostly my own invention. I may settle ties with a coin flip, we'll see.

Easiest batch yet. I had a clear favorite in each match. That said I'm curious to read opinions that vote against my choices.
Title: Re: Pink Floyd Songs Tournament
Post by: MartinTeller on May 15, 2017, 10:19:47 AM
1. Time vs. Wot's... Uh the Deal?

This is dredging up that old "best vs. favorite" argument inside me. Time is one of the most iconic PF songs. By most metrics it's the "better" song here. It's more elaborate, better produced, has a lot more going on with a complex structure. The lyrics are more insightful. But Wots is just more my speed. Maybe I'm too burnt out on DSotM in general and Time in particular, but I love the gentle pleasantness of Wots (despite its terribly clunky title).

2. Bring the Boys Back Home vs. Chapter 24

Like its companion Vera, this was one that really bugged me back in the day but now I have a lot of appreciation for it. It's such an oddball song to be in the middle of this album, but it totally works, and it's strangely moving. However... I love Chapter 24. That loping bassline, the clarinet and bassoon (I think it's clarinet and bassoon, anyway). The only thing is it's a bit repetitive and feels like it could be like 40 seconds shorter. This one is tough, but I vote to Bring the Boys Back Home.

3. Is There Anybody Out There? vs. Paranoid Eyes

I love the calm beauty of ITAOT, and it's one of my favorite sequences in the film. Great guitar pattern by Gilmour. But it's up against some stiff competition. Paranoid Eyes is a fantastic track, with a calm beauty of its own. Some of the production flourishes give me chills. Jeez this one is a hard choice, but I'm going with Eyes.

4. Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1 vs. One of the Few

Fortunately this is an easy choice. I like OotF, but it's pretty slight. As for Brick, I think part 1 is my favorite, love that breezy guitar solo. Definitely Brick.

5. Welcome to the Machine vs. The Fletcher Memorial Home

I love the sonic landscape of Machine, with the weird industrial-sounding synth and pulsing bass contrasted against the bright acoustic guitar. It's a good tune to just get kind of lost in. But the vocals I'm not a big fan of. There's not a lot of them, but they bug me. The vocals on Fletcher are a little whiny-sounding in places, but the lyrics are superb. I get lost in this song too. And it has a great solo. Yeah, it's Fletcher for me, though I fully expect it to get creamed in this matchup.

6. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VIIX) vs. Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert

Wow, we've got a lot of Final Cut in this batch. No contest here, though. Hands is an amusing aside, Shine 6-9 is the conclusion to an epic masterpiece. And it has some of the funkiest music PF ever managed. And I'm a sucker for funk. Easy vote for Shine.

7. Run Like Hell vs. Stop

Length isn't everything, but it's pretty easy to vote against these short little songs. Stop is fine and has a perfect place in context of the album (I like how they implemented it in the film too) but Run Like Hell is one of my favorites. That driving urgency really works. Run Like Hell for me.

8. Goodbye Blue Sky vs. Ibiza Bar

Hmm, I don't hate Ibiza Bar as much as I thought I did. It's a lot less obnoxious than its companion piece, The Nile Song. Still, it's no match for Goodbye Blue Sky, one of the most gorgeous songs PF ever did. Goosebumps happening when I listen to it.

1. Wots... Uh The Deal is a perfectly fine song with a terrible title. Not that it would matter since it's up against what I would call a highlight of DSOTM if that album wasn't all highlights. Time, easily.

2. I'll throw in a vote for Chapter 24 because I love its wacky space lyrics. Bring the Boys Back Home is very good in The Wall, but loses a lot when it's on its own.

3. Is There Anybody Out There, OTOH, is still very powerful on its own. Paranoid Eyes is pretty decent but peters out around the halfway point.

4. It feels like half of the songs I can't recognize just by the titles are from The Final Cut. This one really shouldn't be recognized by anyone anyway, so Another Brick in the Wall Part 1 lives on, though it'll have a tough time in the next round I think.

5. One of the best songs on The Final Cut can't really compete with Welcome to the Machine, a song I don't listen to that often but really should, it's great.

6. I'm sensing a theme. Sorry Martin, this is the "eliminating The Final Cut" round. SoYcD Part IImoves on.

7. Amusing match-up, if only for the titles. Also a very easy one. I mean, how can you even stop if you don't Run ?

8. Ibiza Bar, along with The Nile Song, is one of my guilty pleasures. I know it's dumb (and Young Lust is essentially PF making fun of those two a decade later) and no great but... Gilmour is having fun, and I never loved Goodbye, Blue Sky all that much. It's fine, and it doesn't need my vote anyway.

4. Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1 vs. One of the Few

Fortunately this is an easy choice. I like OotF, but it's pretty slight. As for Brick, I think part 1 is my favorite, love that breezy guitar solo. Definitely Brick.
It's interesting how over time, part 1 has become my favorite Brick too. I don't want to say it's because part 2 has been heard almost as frequently as "Sweet Home Alabama" in my lifetime, and I will still vote part 2 deep into this tourney, but yeah, that breezy guitar is only bested by "Goodbye Blue Sky" on The Wall. It's like how I love the ominousness of this version over the delivery of Part 2.

It's obvious that songs from The Wall mostly have a greater value with me because of the film. (The one exception being the portrayal of the judge in The Trial. That song plays better without that image.) Some parts of The Wall have aged as early 80s MTV, but Run Like Hell remains one of its most powerful sections, especially following In The Flesh. I remember when I learned of The Wall, this was one of the most controversial scenes because of the depictions of violence, especially racial and sexual. Those moments still have impact, but I've seen much worse, much less responsible from a lot of other movies. I don't think you can view this through a modern prism and say that Alan Parker crosses a moral line.

The song that improves the most from the movie is "Empty Spaces/What Shall We Do Now". The flower sex can be debated, but I still say the music is better with it. It's the What Shall We Do Now part after that resonates strongly with me, and the animated attack on commercialism and institutions.

Well the destruction of  The Final Cut is almost complete.

Time vs. Wot's... Uh the Deal?
Wot's is very good, but out matched by Time.

Bring the Boys Back Home vs. Chapter 24
Same again, Chapter 24 is out matched by BtBBH.

Is There Anybody Out There? vs. Paranoid Eyes
This one was much tougher. Is There Anybody Out There is wonderful, but I Eyes it is.

Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1 vs. One of the Few
One of the Few is one of my favourites off The Final Cut, but it is not a match.

Welcome to the Machine vs. The Fletcher Memorial Home
Sigh, another cut

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VIIX) vs. Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert
I love the sound effect at the beginning of Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert

Run Like Hell vs. Stop
RLH for a while was my favourite song off The Wall, it has dropped off that pedestal, but it still out does Stop

Goodbye Blue Sky vs. Ibiza Bar
I am not sure which song will beat GBS for me, as it may well be my favourite PF song.

Well the destruction of  The Final Cut is almost complete.

There's still hope for Paranoid Eyes (hoping to get a tiebreaker vote today) and there's three more songs still to come. But yeah, it's not looking good. So far the only one to survive is When the Tigers Broke Free which isn't even on the original album.

1. Like I said in the beginning, that 7/4 Money riff is the first thing I ever learned to play on the guitar. While I really love The Show Must Go On, Money has a lot of sentimental value, besides also being a really great song.

2. Hmm, I really should have paid more attention to the seeding for some of these. These are two very "minor" songs. I don't have any particular connection to or love for Country Song, in fact I'm not familiar with it at all. But it's way, way better than Spanish Piece.

3. Oh man, this should not be a round 1 battle! Two early great, baroque pop songs! I hate myself for putting these two against each other. Okay, okay... um... Remember a Day, I guess, for the atmosphere.

4. See, the problem is I genuinely love MOST of Pink Floyd's songs. Matilda Mother is a delight. So many different wonderful parts, coming together in this mad mishmash. But y'all know how much I champion TFC, and the title track is one of the best songs. "Could anybody love you? Or is it just a crazy dream?" Those descending string lines... just gorgeous. All those little production touches. Sorry Matilda, it has to be The Final Cut.

5. Ha ha ha! My favorite (arguably) song on my favorite PF album vs. my least favorite (also arguable) song on my least favorite PF album. It doesn't get any easier than this: Dogs

6. As far as all those forgettable instrumentals on More go, Dramatic Theme ain't bad. It feels like it could be part of something on Saucerful, perhaps. But I friggin' love What Shall We Do Now. It always annoyed me that it didn't make it to the album... the inner sleeve even taunted me with the lyrics for a song I couldn't listen to (at least, not without watching the movie).

7. It took me decades to warm up to Atom Heart Mother. Now I have a lot of appreciation for it. I think it just took me a while to get familiar with it, give it a proper chance to sink in. Seamus is a pleasant enough filler track, but it doesn't hold a candle to the intricacies of Atom Heart Mother.

8. Pigs on the Wing is great, but I'm such a sucker for their pop singles. Julia Dream is lovely (and another song I learned to play very early on).
Title: Re: Pink Floyd Songs Tournament
Post by: Teproc on May 19, 2017, 02:24:59 PM
1. Money is the only PF song I'll admit is a bit overplayed (and of the "real" songs, on DSOTM it's the one that feels the least essential to the overall album), but it's still great. The Show Must Go On is really good too, but it's hard to compete with such an iconic song.

2. A Spanish Piece is really dumb and minor. Country Song is nothing special, but it lives to fight another day.

3. I like Remember a Day (one thing to come out of this bracket is I'm continually surprised by how much I like A Saucerful of Secrets, I think I underrate the album as a whole because it doesn't necessarily compare very well with Piper), but See Emily Play was on Works, so it's part of that core PF canon for me, the songs that immediately evoke going on vacation, listening to it during long car trips... I think the matchup would go the other way without that emotional attachment though.

4. I just respond to wackiness better than preachy sentimentality. It works in The Wall because there's a sense of greater purpose that imbues every song, and they also don't all sound the same. Musically, The Final Cut is boringly homogenous to me... it's not bad, I like the song and all, but it's just... underwhelming and uninteresting. Compare to Matilda Mother, which might not be Syd's best effort, but is brimming with energy and joy, and the choice is not very hard here.

5. I confessed earlier that The Nile Song was a guilty pleasure of mine, but it ain't beating Dogs, come on now.

6. When I clicked on the link for What Shall We Do Now ?, I felt dumb for not having recognized it immediately, but now I see it just isn't on the album. Well that's a shame. I'll disagree with Martin about Dramatic Theme: I like PF's instrumentals of that era a lot, and this is one of the only ones that I'd agree to call "forgettable".

7. Something is WRONG with these match-ups. How is it that Country Song gets to advance but I have to vote against freaking Seamus ? It's got a dog ! It's a literal dog blues ! Atom Heart Mother is the most Floydian song to ever be floyded, and my go-to answer for favorite PF song (but I'll be ready to reconsider it later in this bracket), so there's that, but this pairing sucks. A lot. Like, I would vote for Seamus over more than half of this bracket. Boo. Woof.

8. Are we sure I can't vote for Seamus in this match-up ? Whatever, Pigs on the Wing (Part 2) is ok I guess.

1. I can never remember what When You're In is like until I hear it and think "oh yeah, that one". A decent little instrumental, but no match for Wish You Were Here, not by a long shot. A stunning song.

2. Hmm, these are both pretty good. Biding My Time is more interesting, but I enjoy Childhood's End a little more.

3. We don't need to say anything about Party Sequence, right? This is obvious: Overdrive. Moving on...

4. Jeez, getting a lot of OBC in this batch, aren't we? It's my fault for getting lazy with the seeding towards the end. The title track is fine, actually I like it quite a bit, but Nobody Home is one of the greats for me, certainly one of my top 3 on The Wall. Gonna say these are maybe Waters's finest lyrics.

5. Oh man. The Gnome is one of the best Syd songs, I just adore it. But Great Gig... my favorite thing on DSotM, it's utterly sublime and gives me chills. I hate to do this to poor little Grimble Grumble, but Great Gig is a soaring masterpiece.

6. I like Free Four, but I gotta go with Happiest Days, even though it's inseparable from Brick 2 (and the lyrics are kind of on the nose).

7. Seriously, Martin? Five OBC tracks in one batch? Ah well. Stay is really beautiful on the verses and the bridge, but I hate the choruses. That makes this choice a little easier, because One of These Days is amazing. Kind of a sequel to Eugene, no?

8. I like the music of Don't Leave Me Now, that slow burn. But the whiny vocals grate on me a little bit, even though they're meant to be whiny. I'll take If, my favorite thing on AHM.

1. When You're In is a typical Obscured by Clouds song: solid, enjoyable, but unable to compete with a heavyweight like Wish You Were Here.

2. Fun fact: when I was growing up, I believed (as well as many other people not very well versed in English names for animals) that Pink Floyd was named after this (http://www.francismizio.net/NEWPF/wp-content/uploads/animals_hdwallpaper_flamingo_58586.jpg)... but nope, it turns out it's about two obscure bluesmen. Learning this was both disappointing (for obvious reasons) and just surprising, because PF is not Led Zeppelin, and those influences are relatively well-hidden in their wide-ranging oeuvre (Seamus being one of few exceptions, but I'm trying to forget about poor Seamus and it's cruel, cruel elimination). All of which is a long-winded way of saying that I was delighted to discover Biding My Time, which is as straight-forwardly bluesy as Pf can get. That being said, it's an easy Childhood's End vote for me. PF was better at prog-rock than they were at blues, as it turns out.

3. Party Sequence is barely a song... not that Interstellar Overdrive couldn't have beaten it if it were, but you know.

4. As much as I have a fondness for Obscured by Clouds the album, Obscured by Clouds the song is kinda meh. Nobody Homes is a classic The Wall track, simple but powerful.

5. The Gnome is wacky fun, but The Great Gig in the Skyis magnificent.

6. Free Four was on Works and automatically has sentimental value for me because of that. Also, it's up against what's more of a bridge in between Another Brick in the Wall parts than a whole song, so yeah.

7. This is the Obscured by Clouds spotlight round huh ? Well, One of These Days (also on Works, and probably my first favorite PF song) it's going to get cut into little pieces.

8. Don't Leave Me Now is one of those The Wall tracks that loses quite a bit outside of its context. It holds up fine still, but If is just lovely and wins this one easily.

Unfortunately my weekend was busy enough that I wasn't able to vote in the last batch, and I will try to make a commentary on this batch, but one thing must be said.

Biding My Time, I believe, is the most underappreciated PF song.  It's one of my favorites.  It is almost three songs that are perfectly transitioned and yet completely unified in theme and composition.  The buildup is perfect, and the final guitar solo is as raunchy and out of control as the opening is cool and smooth.  I get such joy listening to this song, which I do frequently.

That is all.

1. Hoo boy. Starting this batch out with a real toughie. These are both among my very favorite PF songs. As I said before, Two Suns is (maybe) my top song off TFC. But Hey You is definitely one of my favorites from The Wall (always thought it was such a shame it isn't in the movie). And to be completely honest, listening the Two Suns now, it's not as good as The Gunner's Dream... or the title track... or Paranoid Eyes. So I guess I'll go for Hey You.

2. For the life of me, I feel like I've never heard Absolutely Curtains before. Of course I have heard it before, and many many times. But that's how forgettable it is. Weakest song on OBC? Probably. An easy vote for Corporal Clegg, a delightful weird ditty (and far more memorable). Kazoo solo! This song makes me think of XTC's psychedelic-era tribute side project, The Dukes of Stratosphear.

3. I swear, More should be a 4-song EP. 6 songs at the most. I get it, it's a soundtrack and most of it is meant to be just background music or whatever, but as an album so much of it is skippable. Another easy vote for In the Flesh?, a great kick-off track to a great album.

4. See above. More Blues is mildly pleasant and utterly disposable. It sounds like a band noodling around during a sound check. Fearless is one of those songs that has a lot of nostalgia for me because it was in that first book of sheet music I owned. And it's a beautiful song with some great riffs.

5. Here it is, last chance for vote for a song off the oft-maligned (unfairly, IMHO) The Final Cut. Hero's Return has some fantastic production work. The song just sounds amazing. I love it. But does it stand a chance against Brain Damage? I mean, Brain Damage is pretty awesome too. It's probably a losing battle, but I have to cast my vote for Hero's Return.

6. Empty Spaces is a wonderful moody piece, the perfect buildup to either Young Lust or What Shall We Do Now (depending on if you're doing album or film). Waiting is... okay. There's bits about it I really like and other bits I could do without. Empty Spaces.

7. I love See-Saw, but I can't pick it over Astronomy Domine.

8. One of My Turns is really, really good but I have to go for Jugband Blues, Syd's last, pained gasp.

Hey You
Absolute Curtains
In the Flesh?
Fearless
The Hero's Return
Waiting for the Worms
See-Saw
One of My Turns

So I am the only one to vote for either See-Saw or Waiting for the Worms. With Waiting for the Worms, I really like both, so in the end it was the end of each of the songs that did it, I like the extra sharp end to Waiting. See-Saw just hit a better note for me today.

Title: Re: Pink Floyd Songs Tournament

Round 1 album survival stats:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - 50% (6/12)
A Saucerful of Secrets - 29% (2/7)
More - 15% (2/13)
Atom Heart Mother - 40% (2/5)
Zabriskie Point - 33% (1/3)
Meddle - 66% (4/6)
Obscured By Clouds - 20% (2/10)
Dark Side of the Moon - 70% (7/10)
Wish You Were Here - 100% (5/5)
Animals - 100% (5/5)
The Wall - 78% (21/27)
The Final Cut - 23% (3/13)
singles/other - 38% (5/13)

If I was really industrious, I'd do this by running time, since there are so many lengthy songs.

These numbers aren't too surprising, except maybe the poor showing by Obscured. Some bad luck in the matchups, I think. This round, Sheep vs. PotW1 will ruin the perfect score for Animals, and there's a similar matchup on the horizon for Wish You Were Here. I've definitely learned to put more thought into the seeding next time I do a tournament like this.

1. Comfortably Numb vs. Burning Bridges

Boy, things are not going well for Obscured By Clouds. CN is the odds-on favorite here, but to be honest I'm pretty tired of it. I know I shouldn't hold "overplayed" against it, but I gotta vote with my heart and my heart would much rather listen to Burning Bridges. Not that it stands a chance here.

2. Paintbox vs. Lucifer Sam

As I said in round 1, Paintbox is basically the reason I started this tournament, and I'm still very enamored with it.

3. Mother vs. Green Is the Colour

This is one of the really hard ones. Mother is dangerously close to "overplayed" as well, but still holds its considerable appeal. But GitC is so great! More doesn't have much to offer, but this is a definitely a highlight. It's just such shabby charm. Green in the Colour for me, but it's so close.

4. Eclipse vs. Goodbye Cruel World

Two short ones. I'm more fond of Cruel World.

5. Us and Them vs. A Pillow of Winds

Uh oh, another toughie. I honestly don't know what to do here, I love them both so much. Going with Pillow for the underdog vote.

6. Young Lust vs. Any Colour You Like

Not a fan of YL, am a fan of Any Colour.

7. Echoes vs. When the Tigers Broke Free

No. No no no no no NO!!! I don't want to lose Tigers, but how do I not vote for Echoes? Damn, this matchup sucks :(

8. Sheep vs. Pigs on the Wing (Part 1)

This one's easy, at least. Sheep

Young Lust
When the Tigers Broke Free - I do like Echoes, but...

I voted, but I accidentally passed over Paintbox.  Add an extra vote for that, please.

That creates a tie, as does my missing vote for Any Colour You Like. But I want to get the next round started, so I'll be settling ties with a virtual coin flip.

Round 2, Part 1 results:

Comfortably Numb vs. Burning Bridges (7-1)
Paintbox vs. Lucifer Sam (4-4) (coin flip)
Mother vs. Green Is the Colour (6-3)
Eclipse vs. Goodbye Cruel World (5-4)
Us and Them vs. A Pillow of Winds (5-3)
Young Lust vs. Any Colour You Like (4-4) (coin flip)
Echoes vs. When the Tigers Broke Free (5-3)
Sheep vs. Pigs on the Wing (Part 1) (7-2)

...very annoyed that Google's coin flip worked against me both times

1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts IV) vs. Cirrus Minor

The last surviving song from More. I feel bad, but up against Crazy Diamond? I don't think so. Cymbaline might have stood a chance.

2. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun vs. Bike

It just occurred to me that Set the Controls is never as long as I think it is. Maybe I associate the title more with the live version off Ummagumma. Anyway, gonna go with Sun... I hate voting against Syd but as great as Bike is, I'd rather chill out with the mellow space jam.

3. Pigs (Three Different Ones) vs. The Thin Ice

Well, I quite like Thin Ice but it's gonna take more than that to get me to vote against Pigs.

4. Breathe vs. In the Flesh

Mellow is winning the day for me today. I must be in a chill mood. Breathe it is.

5. Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 vs. Embryo

I wonder if I still remember how to play the solo from Brick? That must be buried in my subconscious somewhere. It's a really great solo, which is the thing that's making want to vote against Embryo, one of my underdog favorites in this. Decisions, decisions... going with Embryo.

6. Pow R. Toc H. vs. Arnold Layne

Two Syd songs! Both great, but I think I'm leaning towards Arnold.

7. Have a Cigar vs. Vera

Vera for me. It's so lovely.

8. The Trial vs. Careful with That Axe, Eugene

Yeah, I'm in a space jam kind of place today. Eugene.

1. Time vs. Bring the Boys Back Home

I could show some love for BtBBH, but I gotta be real and vote for Time

2. Is There Anybody Out There? vs. Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1

Tough Wall battle here. There are pretty equal to me... both songs I really love, don't get talked about much, similar subdued vibe. I guess Brick Part 1, but I could go either way.

3. Welcome to the Machine vs. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VIIX)

Definitely Shine for me.

4. Run Like Hell vs. Goodbye Blue Sky

Wow, another difficult Wall head-to-head. These are both probably in my top 4 or 5 on the album. But in my heart of hearts, I know... Goodbye Blue Sky

5. Money vs. Country Song

Oh, here's our lone holdover from Zabriskie Point. Not the one I would've expected, actually. Not that it matters, it's a goner. Money, obv.

6. See Emily Play vs. The Final Cut

This is testing my allegiance to TFC. But while I adore Emily, it's an easy vote for Final Cut

7. Dogs vs. What Shall We Do Now?

Round 2 is full of painful choices. I'd love to see WSWDN stick around longer but I can't vote against Dogs for it.

8. Atom Heart Mother vs. Pigs on the Wing (Part 2)

Is longer always better? Not necessarily. But in this case, yeah. AHM

Round 2 is full of painful choices.

Understatement.  Time is a no brainer for me.  But Is Anybody Out there and ABitW1 are both excellent transition songs, great mood pieces.  I don't even remember what I chose.  Machine and the second half of Diamond are both amazing.  I went with Diamond because I love it so, whether it is better or not.  Run Like Hell has gotten tiring over time, but GBS has increased my admiration.  Money is going to be a winner most of the time.  See Emily Play I like much better than anything on the Final Cut.  What Shall We Do and Pigs win mostly because I don't care for the two longer songs.

This is a whole lot of easy choices. Not even gonna comment in most cases.

Wish You Were Here
Nobody Home
The Great Gig in the Sky
One of These Days

Hey You vs. Corporal Clegg - This one's tough because I'm not wild about either. Clegg for the weirdness factor.

I sang Hey You while in jail.  It's a favorite.

You're right, it's a pretty easy round.  The last was the toughest one.

I've been cuffed in the back of a police car. That might be as close as I ever get.

Being cuffed and transported is the least fun part.  My partner in crime complained about how his size and how the handcuffs were too tight.  The officer driving us basically told us that it was made uncomfortable, even painful, on purpose.  Makes sense.   It also confirmed to me that the police/jail system don't really believe in "innocent before proven guilty."  They are interested in punishing as much as is legally allowed before any court.

I am only now finding this thread as I mostly depend on email notifications of threads I am already subscribed to.  I wish I had discovered it from the start but going to read through it. Like Martin, The Final Cut is one of my favorites and I haven't listened didn't like too much of the post Waters' work.  But having listened to some of Gilmour's solo DVD concerts, I do feel he deserves as much as of the credit as Waters for shaping the musical sound.

You can find pretty much his entire show done (mostly) acoustically on YouTube by individual tracks:

This looks neat (http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/feature/pink-floyd-their-mortal-remains-sde-va-exhibition-preview/)

I just went to that a few days ago, pretty well done. Not sure you will learn anything new if you are a long term fan but a lot of items on display like their early instruments and original notes and lyrics and a few letters you can read.  There is one bass guitar belonging to Gilmour that says he used it on Wish You Were Here and purchased it from Waters in 1971 (I think). I am not sure why but I found it funny that one member sold another member their instrument probably at a time where they were getting pretty successful.

Pigs (Three Different Ones)
Arnold Layne
Careful with That Axe, Eugene

Round 2 album survival stats:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - 8% (1/12)
A Saucerful of Secrets - 14% (1/7)
More - 0% (0/13)
Atom Heart Mother - 0% (0/5)
Zabriskie Point - 0% (0/3)
Meddle - 50% (3/6)
Obscured By Clouds - 0% (0/10)
Dark Side of the Moon - 60% (6/10)
Wish You Were Here - 60% (3/5)
Animals - 80% (4/5)
The Wall - 33% (9/27)
The Final Cut - 15% (2/13)
singles/other - 15% (2/13)

Unsurprisingly, nearly half the songs in round 3 are from The Wall and Dark Side. There's a matchup in the next batch that guarantees we will lose at least one more song from Animals.

Comfortably Numb vs. Lucifer Sam

I am going to have to go Comfortably Numb for Gilmour's guitar work but it is tough

Mother vs. Eclipse

Mother gets it easily.  Eclipse never was one of my favorites

Us and Them vs. Young Lust

Us and Them, it was one of those that I originally thought was a boring song but grew to be a great song.

Echoes vs. Sheep

This is the most difficult, I love both songs.  But I think Sheep is the best of Animals and have to give it the edge even though it will probably lose.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts IV) vs. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun

Shine on... Set the Controls doesn't really hold up for me.

Pigs (Three Different Ones) vs. Breathe

Breathe...

Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 vs. Arnold Layne

I only really like Part 1 and Part 3, so Arnold Layne

Vera vs. Careful with That Axe, Eugene

Vera!!!

Us and Them vs. Young Lust is the toughest decision to date. So contrasting it's hard to believe they're from the same band, but I think they're both classics of their type. Ultimately went with Us and Them because it felt like the responsible choice.

Time, although Is Anybody Out There? is marvelous.
Goodbye Blue Sky although voting against Shine on You Crazy Diamond is a sin against my soul.
Money, because, well, it's Money.
Pigs on the Wing because I just don't really care for Dogs, sorry.
Wish You were Here and Nobody Home is the hardest choice ever.  Love both those songs.  I have no idea which I chose.
Great Gig in the Sky because I cannot vote against that song.
I painfully chose Hey You.
Astronomy Domine because we must not forget Syd.

>>Time vs. Is There Anybody Out There?

Time is simply one of the best songs ever constructed and could battle for my favorite PF song. I guess I will really find out if it comes up against WYWH at some point.

>>Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VIIX) vs. Goodbye Blue Sky

Shine On!

>>Money vs. The Final Cut

This one is easy, The Final Cut bares all and needs more love.  Plus Money is simply overrated.

>>Dogs vs. Pigs on the Wing (Part 2)

Somehow how the weight of the two songs seems unfair to but them up against each other. I feel like a heavyweight it fighting a fighting a lightweight.  Dogs it is

>>Wish You Were Here vs. Nobody Home

WYWH is just going to always get my vote... until maybe it goes against Time than I am going to curse Martin

>>The Great Gig in the Sky vs. One of These Days

I am too lazy to go check what I voted for her.  Both have something very unique and I guess I could go either way from day to day

>>Hey You vs. Fearless

Hey You always one of my favorites from the Wall, maybe it just works great as a stand alone song without having to be part of the package.

>>The Hero's Return vs. Astronomy Domine

I feel Astronomy Domine if stuck in another time though maybe I am just showing a bit of bias voting for The Hero's Return
Title: Re: Pink Floyd Songs Tournament

Well lots of very close pairings, 5 with a vote split of 5-4.

Goodbye Blue Sky

Pigs on the Wing (Part 2)
Wish You Were Here
One of these Days
Hey You
The Hero's Return
Title: Re: Pink Floyd Songs Tournament

Round 3, part 2 results:

Time vs. Is There Anybody Out There? (9-0)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VIIX) vs. Goodbye Blue Sky (3-6)
Money vs. The Final Cut (5-4)
Dogs vs. Pigs on the Wing (Part 2) (5-4)
Wish You Were Here vs. Nobody Home (8-1)
The Great Gig in the Sky vs. One of These Days (5-4)
Hey You vs. Fearless (5-4)

So, I goofed. In the previous round, I accidentally advanced Astronomy Domine instead of One of My Turns. So we need a quick redo match:

The Hero's Return (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ozLx9IZP0k#no) vs. One of My Turns (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLWEpS5ixO8#no)

Sheep...

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts IV) vs. Pigs (Three Different Ones) (6-3)
Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 vs. Vera (4-5)
Time vs. Goodbye Blue Sky (4-5)
Money vs. Dogs (4-5)
Wish You Were Here vs. The Great Gig in the Sky (8-1)
Hey You vs. One of My Turns (7-2)

Lost some heavy-hitters this round. Somehow, Dark Side of the Moon has completely bitten the dust. I never would have predicted that. And miraculously, Vera survives another round!

Okay, let's wrap this round up before someone comes along and ties up a match....

Round 4 results:
Time vs. Goodbye Blue Sky (4-5)

Who are these fools that didn't vote for Time, I want names...

Or maybe it will make the next round easier

Voted Shine and Dogs.

Despite having only 5 songs, WYWH takes two slots in the final four. Only one from The Wall, and I still think it's crazy that DSotM didn't even make the top 8. Perhaps I should have waited for a couple of more votes in round 4, where Brick Part 2, Time and Money each lost 5-4. But upsets make these things interesting, right?

Here's how the top ten seeds have fared:

1. Comfortably Numb - in the Semifinals
2. Time - lost in round 4 to Goodbye Blue Sky
3. Wish You Were Here - in the Semifinals
4. Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Parts I-V - in the Semifinals

5. Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 - lost in round 4 to Vera
6. Hey You - lost in round 5 to Wish You Were Here
7. Money - lost in round 4 to Dogs
8. Us and Them - lost in round 4 to Sheep
9. Echoes - lost in round 3 to Sheep
10. Dogs - in the Semifinals

Something strange happened as I think it let me vote twice, I submitted a vote on page 19 and saw this after I submitted:

Pick your favorite in each bracket
Comfortably Numb
4 (33.3%)Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts IV)
2 (16.7%)Dogs
3 (25%)Wish You Were Here
3 (25%)
Total Members Voted: 6

When I moved to page 20, it let me vote again and I see this:

Pick your favorite in each bracket
Comfortably Numb
5 (35.7%)Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts IV)
2 (14.3%)Dogs
3 (21.4%)Wish You Were Here
4 (28.6%)
Total Members Voted: 7

I paged back and saw the vote at 6. Can you confirm that 7 different people voted and I am just mistaken that I voted twice?

Martin, this has been a really fun ride through the years. It in a way is remarkable that just three albums got to be present in the quarter finals. Here I, for one, thinks that it is good that DSOTM drew blank! Animals will always be the only PF album that I really care about, but it was impressive the way The Wall had representation in every one of the four quarter finals. The tournament have been great fun but during it's course my esteem for the group has diminished some. Apart from the latter part of the 70's and a few psychedelic tracks there is not so much to write to home about. Funny, eh!? :D

We'd need at least 3 more votes to turn either of the tides, and that's very unlikely so let's get to the grand finale...

Comfortably Numb vs. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts IV) (7-5)
Dogs vs. Wish You Were Here (3-9)

Well, this seems like a rather unsurprising climax. The #1 seed vs. the #3 seed. Voted Wish, a pretty easy choice. It may be unfair but to me, Numb is just too played out. Like if I'm listening to The Wall as a whole I can still enjoy it, but outside of that context I just feel like "oh, this again?" Wish You Were Here has a timeless simplicity and the poetry of the lyrics is gorgeous.

I have to disagree. If anything, this tournament has reminded me how few clunkers there are in the entire Pink Floyd catalog. I would say the only negative for me has been the discovery that I'm not as fond of Obscured By Clouds as I thought I was.

I missed the early rounds so probably didn't get a chance to vote for many on Obscured by Clouds but I really think it is one of their better albums but an outlier between the experimental side and concept side.

The final round is easy, WYWH.  This would only be a difficult choice for me if it had gone against Time.

Haven't commented here in a while, but I've been voting in most rounds.

This is a pretty meh finals for me. I mean, they're both very, very good songs... just not personal favourites. Wish You Were Here has that added emotional weight that, I suppose makes it an acceptable winner. That Echoes and Time weren't in the final 4 feels very wrong to me though.

Such a great song, I forgot about it since it doesn't appear on a proper album.  Here is a rare video of them playing it in rehearsal:

Boy, I'd have a hard time narrowing it down to a top 5 songs. I'm not even sure I could rank the albums (except that I'd have Animals at the top and More on the bottom).

Anyway, looks like we have a pretty clear winner. Congrats to Wish You Were Here! A solid choice, in my opinion. Not exactly a showpiece for the whole group, but a very touching and lovely song.
