Google Doc (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pudcR-LQotB8Mu29MdwAcyoUEo0M2hpr-000Oipkiiw/edit?usp=sharing)
Letterboxd List (https://letterboxd.com/corndogchats/list/2018-filmspot-fyc/by/name/)

We've decided to organize the FYCs a little different again this year. After the last few years of maintaining the By Category and By Film threads, I have noticed a few things.

1. It is very time consuming and often difficult to keep up with all the FYCs, especially having to track everything twice.
2. I have always had the sneaking suspicion that certain FYCs were duplicated when a member didn't remember they had already FYC'd something. (This point is not to call anyone out, as I don't believe anyone ever did it intentionally)

As a result, we will be moving to a Google Doc which will provide some nice benefits to the process I believe. We will also still maintain a Letterboxd List as well.

1. You will be able to see all FYCs in one place.
2. The spreadsheet will afford the member the ability to filter either by Film or by Category to see all FYCs for a certain Film/Category.
3. I will be able to easily track who FYC'd what, giving us a more in depth look at the process than simply something has been seconded or thirded, etc, plus it will prevent re-FYCing.
4. This format should afford pixote and easier way to convert the "data" to a forum post using his wizardry.

I hope everyone finds the spreadsheet easier to work with when looking for FYCs and also looking to put forth FYCs.

If you have questions regarding the process, or how to use the spreadsheet, please don't hesitate to ask.

Without further ado, FYC away!

Best Line - "Bury me in the ocean where my ancestors jumped from ships because they knew death was better than bondage."

I will third this line. Early contender to win the category if I'm honest. Hard to imagine it not holding up through the year.

Also, everyone spoiler tagged their line nominations, but I found nothing to be spoilery about them, so I did not mask them in the FYC spreadsheet. Unless someone can make a good argument as to why they should be...

I assume its so people who have not seen the movie can experience the line fresh, but not sure how that's any different from any other category.

I haven't heard any feedback yet on the new method of tracking FYCs, but no news is good news.

I am curious to hear what people think of the new idea. As I said in my initial post on the subject (http://forum.filmspotting.net/index.php?topic=14705.msg884953#msg884953), it is way easier for us to use and track, so I hope the same can be said for those using it to discover and follow along with the FYCs.

Thirding these and just putting on the record that I'm joining in on the below as what should be the consensus line from this film.

Best Line - "Bury me in the ocean where my ancestors jumped from ships because they knew death was better than bondage."

I will third this line. Early contender to win the category if I'm honest. Hard to imagine it not holding up through the year.

That's still nominatable? Jeez.

After some research, yes it should still be eligible. While being released at Cannes in 2016, 2018 marks its final year of eligibility. It was released theatrically in the US in 2017, but never played in more than 45 theaters nationwide in any given week. The home video release was not until January of 2018.

So I think it is still eligible for one final year, unless pixote deems that it was widely available enough prior to the home video release.

I'm surprised by this one. I found it surprisingly sluggish for an Anderson film.

I had that concern. The non-dog characters are at least voiced by Japanese actors? Or some of them? The kids?

Edit: Just read that none of the Japanese is captioned. Oof!

No, I think you are right and withdraw the nominations, I’m just getting increasingly annoyed at release patterns or how they interact with availability. Like, used to be Netflix had every DVD within a month of release and now they are too busy slipping mediocrity onto their streaming platform.

The trailer intrigued me, though so far my efforts to find an "extended elgibility" movie to champion in the Animated Film category haven't gone that well, with neither My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea nor The Girl Without Hands meeting expectations. I haven't yet convinced my to give Have a Nice Day a chance.

Edit: Damn, didn't realize they delayed the release til September.

Second Edit: Hmm, the version I saw was not in English either (dunno if it was Icelandic or something invented / prehistoric approximation)

Ok, turns out they tacked the english onto the trailer but the film is still in an invented indo-european ancestral language.

I didn't realize I was such a big purveyor of FYCs, though I assume a decent chunk of that must be composed of holdovers for last year, since I see Nocturama is still FYCed.

Think it's an adapted screenplay.

I feel like I'm just not as high on Davis as everyone else both here and in general, but she does a lot of great reacting, which I suppose is then also great acting. And there's a subtlety to even her bigger moments that I wish resonated with me more. Regardless, very high on this thing as well. Need to give Hunger another go since it's the only McQueen I've seen, all mostly around when they got their US releases (three of the four played at PFF in some capacity, I think, though I've seen none there), that didn't do a ton for me. But I was younger then, even if I like that raw reaction. Super great minor part in here as well by Matt 'Matthew' Walsh where he feels like he's just playing a variation on Mike from Veep that is wonderful.

Not sure what to do with them but I want to figure out how to nominate the part where the camera circles around a guy rapping and also the other scene where it's on the hood of a car. Both really fantastic McQueen moments.

She's really good in it, though all the performers mostly are, even #TeamEmma C Team. It's not always the Yorgos I want, but still well worth watching and fits in with a number of the ideas he likes to explore even though he didn't pen the script. Well worth the time, though I wish it resonated with me on a more personal, rather than professional, level. There's a visual choice in it that recurs throughout that I still don't really understand after my first viewing, though I did appreciate.

I’ve seen fewer films in the past five months than any other five-month span in recent memory, with just one 2018 film in that span (Spider-verse yesterday). Not sure I’ll even be able to submit a Filmspot nominations ballot at this rate, which would be a first. Anybody want to suggest like a top 20 “must-see” films of the year, with respect to FYCs? Not necessarily the top 20 best films, but rather the movies that are mostly likely to be the most discussed in our year-end conversations.

I’m also looking for documentary suggestions, since that’s the Filmspot category where it’s easy to have an impact while only watching a handful of films.

I realized that shot could be referring to two moments. I'm pretty sure we're thinking of the same one, but a few seconds earlier there's a really good shot where the camera is traveling backwards looking at LMM who moves like a panther. At the end of the shot the camera looks up and there are also lamplighters posed and waiting.

As for Ben Wishaw... He gives an excellent performance, emotionally grounded with that one mid-sentence breakdown that's amazing. However, I question if what he's doing fits the tone. Contrast that with Emily Blunt whose every pose and pronunciation is broad and carefully-staged. She's kind of fake out of context but fits the tone perfectly. Wishaw is too heartbroken and at times too angry and mean for this movie.

I suppose I should’ve said “Final (rape) scene”, but in any case, I am really surprised by the generality of the response.  With the tone off the voice of the Queen and look on Abigail’s face, I don’t see any meaningful difference between what’s happening in the final scene of the film, in terms of use of power, and what Harvey Weinstein was accused of - other than the gender of the perpetrator, that is.

Have to imagine that Minding The Gap pretty much has the doc category to itself this year, even with strong showings from the genre as a whole (theoretically), but FLY will finally be on the Wiseman train this year, so I'd recommend Monrovia if it's accessible anywhere.

I'll try and give the others a thought in terms of my own speculation as to what the convo starters will be and stray from my own list of essentials, since I think there's a gap of its own there.

From a legal standpoint rape implies penetration. What happens is something, to be sure, but I'm not sure I'd want to cheapen that word to describe it. And in the context of a film that is basically chock full of manipulation, it feels less like abuse and more like turnabout is fair play.

With all respect, I will actively campaign against the college-level artsy aesthetic choices in Revenge. Thematically, she may rise like a phoenix into an unstoppable force, but a #timesup twist on cinema’s most base formula? ‘fraid not.

Don’t know why you’d “actively campaign” against one of the best debuts and best genre films of the year (“college level” aesthetics? ‘fraid not), but I suppose you’re really not going to like this (http://aflixionado.com/revenge-2018/).
Title: Re: FYC 2018 - General

one of the best debuts and best genre films of the year
Hereditary
Searching
Cam

Though I keep thinking of Boots Riley and Sorry to Bother You. It's not a film I liked, but he made bold choices as if he'd never get to make another film. Coralie Fargeat made some tweaks to the formula in key places, but largely fell in line with other films of this genre with a heightened color intensity. (I don't see the "audience most likely to consume this sort of genre film" getting the feminist point simply based on the film itself.)

I like the research put into that article. Really good to mention Ms. 45. I wish the Last House remake wasn't lumped in with I Spit on Your Grave. That remake does a surprising job of turning an unpleasant premise with an implausible twist into a well-acted intense thriller. (Until the final 30 seconds.) I like the description of the changes in color, but this...

Quote
Rather than seeking to establish a broad palatability for her protagonist, Fargeat baits a certain segment of audience with a character who, according to those traditional norms, “has it coming.”  But as the #MeToo movement has made abundantly clear, nobody has it coming.  Period.

Consistent with the movement’s call for a heightened consciousness based on shared experience, Fargeat chooses to initiate the chain of events that define this genre with some rather common interactions.

Here is my problem. Based purely on what's on the screen, how is this different from any other rape/revenge movie. Now, I'll step back and say that 'yes' I've seen and written about poorly made R&R films that are to preoccupied in the Rape for sexual titillation (icky) and Revenge for violent gratification, but there are just as many that do understand the first act is meant to fuel the second. Fargeat is a female director and her film is coming out after #MeToo, but what happens on screen before it all goes to Hell is indistinguishable in tone and content from either version of Last House on the Left. Back in 1981, the heroine of Ms. 45 is raped twice in quick succession and there's never a suggestion that she had it coming. The male director made the decision to show no nudity because he felt he didn't need it to fuel her mental breakdown and need for revenge.
Title: Re: FYC 2018 - General
Post by: Dave the Necrobumper on January 03, 2019, 06:05:35 AM
I watched Ms .45 last night for the first time, so it is kind of weird that it is mentioned so soon after. Abel Ferrara not only does not show nudity he also has a generally slimy/sleazy set of male characters, doing things that generally at the time (in film at least) were not looked down upon and he films it in a way to make it slimy/sleazy. It is not a film to watch if you want to feel great as a male. It was a really good film.

A gorgeous epic from Ann Hui grounded in one courageous woman's perspective. Zhou Xun gives a heartbreaking lead performance, and Eddie Peng plays a resistance leader with the charisma of a young Harrison Ford. Great cinematography and a score by Joe Hisaishi.

Picture, Director, Non-English Language Film, Cinematography, Editing, Score, Actress - Zhou Xun, Supporting Actor - Eddie Peng

We the Animals

My favorite of this year's many coming-of-age films. Vivid and energetic camerawork combined with very creative editing captures the young boys' exuberance. An extremely affecting family drama. Has a better floating scene than First Reformed. Just gorgeous.

Picture, Director, Debut, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing

Zama

Vividly captures the surreality of a put-upon Spanish bureaucrat's tenure in a South American village. Martel evokes this without wild camerawork, trippy effects, or frenetic edits. Just a tremendously assured sense of character dynamics and location. Has a wild third act.

Picture, Director, Non-English Language Film, Cinematography, Editing, Best Shot - Zama in the Boat, Best Line - "Do you want to live?"

November

An engrossing Estonian fable about a doomed love triangle. The most visually stunning live-action film I saw this past year. Utterly gorgeous black and white photography that continually took my breath away.

I think you're absolutely right about Stone and Weisz being the leads. It's funny that for all the awards Colman is nominated as Lead and they're both Supporting. Should the Filmspots correct this? There are already several FYC's with them as Supporting.

I would argue for Colman lead, Weisz and Stone as supporting, but you are free to vote for them in whichever category you like. I wonder though if we should come to a concrete consensus to avoid votes cancelling each other out.

I will say that Actress is already loaded this year, and both Weisz and Stone will probably fair better in Supporting.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Best Debut Feature

Into the Spider-Verse is ineligible for Debut Feature since one of the directors, Peter Ramsay, already had his debut with Rise of the Guardians. By the Greta Gerwig rule, the other two directors, Persichetti and Rotham, could still be eligible for this category in the future, if not again paired with a non-debuting director.

In 1987, we rented and watched that when I was 16 and it generated laughter among both of the sexes I was watching it with; what I distinctly remember was that it came across as so cartoonish that the female member of our viewing audience took it as a male director mocking feminism (complete with the veminist detail at the end) for a primarily male viewership.  I just rewatched it for the first time at age 48, and to be honest, I don’t see it any differently; however, the current culture being what it is, my overall impression from Letterboxd is that it’s considered an artistically accurate representation of “rape culture.”

While I would say that neither film is very well made at all, have read a few books by female film scholars on the subject, I would say that I have more respect for what I believe was being attempted by more popularly reviled I Spit on Your Grave (1978) than by Ms. 45.

To bring it back to the thread’s topic (somewhat), what I would also say is that I see a world of difference between those (and the other “canon” film of the subgenre, The Last House on the Left (1972)) and Revenge (2018) - not just in the quality of the filmmaking, but in the latter’s knowing meta-excessiveness and it’s #MeToo coding (even though it was made and hit the festivals before #MeToo became a thing in November 2017).  Now, to 1SO’s observation, as debuts go, I would say that Hereditary is ultimately a more adeptly made film and Sorry to Bother You is certainly more interesting on a socio-political level.  But in terms of reaching an audience that most needs to “hear the message,” having seen all three films in theaters, I would assert that Revenge has a much better shot at reaching young male consumers of horror/action than the overtly didactic and ideologically pure diatribes, BlackKklansman and The Hate U Give.  (Show me a Trump supporter in a red state who’ll pay good money to see either of those and I’ll show you a $3 bill;  in fact, I’m not sure I would have Sorry to Bother You so high on my 2018 top 10 list if there weren’t such critically lauded films tailor made to appeal to the bubble to the Left to contrast it with.)

Post by: sdb_1970 on January 06, 2019, 10:31:21 AM

That is my point: almost invariably, in those prior genre films, the filmmaker makes clear to his audience that the victim - from a girl taking candles to a church (The Virgin Spring), to a feeble seamstress who is literally mute (Ms. 45), to a writer seeking solitude in the woods (I Spit on Your Grave (1978)), to a teenager just trying to score some pot for her friends before a concert (The Last House on the Left (1972)) - did NOT “ask for it”; in stark contrast, Revenge introduces the ultimate protagonist as a young scantily-clad, home-wrecking nymphet in hanging out with rich older married guy, who literally grind-dances on the ultimate perpetrator the night before right in front of her boyfriend (all to the point of contrast that Fargeat wants to make about women who use their sexuality not “just asking for it”).  And think about the conversation as they are sitting on the bed before he rapes her, where he asks, “what is it that you don’t like me?” - a subtle conveyance about the nature of what’s happening, which along with the uncomfortable interchange at the breakfast table I discuss, is absent from any of the genre films I’ve seen. You really don’t think there’s a real distinction in the characterizations and how the genre setup plays out?

And thanks for taking the time to read it.

I've seen terrible R&R films and ones that are even worse. I've also seen some that were above this low bar, though I can't recall past the examples I've already mentioned. Some throw in a scene or moment that's unexpectedly mature for the material. Even the 2010 remake of I Spit on Your Grave have brief dialogue scenes that give the characters a few drops of depth. I know some think Revenge knocks the plot back onto its heels, but I thought it was just more of the same. Not the worst of its type but no, I don't see a real distinction. Had I not known the director was female, I wouldn't have suspected it.

Best Original Screenplay/Director/Picture

Hall in particular is great.

I got to meet the director at a moderately attended Q&A last summer, and he’s a really great guy (unpretentious but intelligent and funny, I could see why people would want to work with him) ... which is why I feel bad in saying that I honestly was pulled out of the movie with some of that dialogue (and I really felt it was the writing that’s off, as in inorganic or something, not the actresses).  Am I the only one?

Reposting this because I never received a response. The idea was that users would be able to filter the spreadsheet to view the FYCs by category. Is this the case? There are obvious reasons why the spreadsheet must be read only for everyone else, but I hadn't considered whether this would prevent you from using the filters as well.

I believe it is. I definitely remember no cuts when the camera looks out the window because I knew that crowd was coming upstairs before there would be an edit. Also, the close-up of the gun is part of that single take.

I think the opening image has a pull all its own, with the dazzle of the airplane and the hypnotic water that settles you into the film's rhythm.

I saw in 3D as well. Jackson is one of the only filmmakers I trust to use 3D beyond the gimmick-ness of it. And there are couple parts of this film that are excellent. But I’m mixed as well. It’s prob 45 minutes too long.
