Title: Shocktober Elimination Game (with 2 votes)
Post by: 1SO on October 02, 2018, 09:33:08 PM
Similar to this game (http://forum.filmspotting.net/index.php?topic=14809.0), I'll post a list and you cross off titles you don't think belong. This time it's the Top 50 from They Shoot Zombies Don't They, listed alphabetically.

You get TWO votes. You can make them both at the same time or you can wait it out and see how the list dwindles down. What's left will have to be looked at as Horror films we all agree are the best.

Ooh, let's make some enemies....

goodbye Aliens

edit: nah, just Aliens for now (which I might argue is more action than horror anyway). might circle back for the other one later, let's see how this plays out for a while....

King Kong (1933), more adventure than horror

The Birds counts as horror I guess, but it sure doesn't count as good (my least favorite of the 21 Hitchcock features I've seen).

I'll hold off on the second vote for now, because while I did kinda hate Nosferatu, it was also the first silent non-comedy I ever watched, and I probably owe it a revisit at some point.

I'm going to start with Suspiria, which has moments, a great opening, fantastic lighting and a classic score, but it doesn't hold together as a film and doesn't belong here.

I'm taking my two right now.  These are films I really enjoy, one is in my top films list, but I just don't think they belong in a horror best list.

Les Diaboliques (1955)-- I just watched it and will give a review later.  But this isn't a horror.  And except for a few moments near the end, it never feels like a horror.  A good film, needing to be watched, but not a horror.

Silence of the Lambs-- I love this film, and there are some truly frightening moments.  But what makes this film is that it is a crime drama with horror elements.  I would say that it is much more a psychological thriller.

And I am very much in support of Martin's first pick, Aliens.  An action film with some very scary moments, but not a horror film.  Unlike Alien, which is one of the great horror films of all time.

The Blair Witch Project is the only one of these I truly hate. I've been on actual camping trips that were scarier than that movie.

It's been interesting to see 4 titles removed so far because people don't think the films are considered Horror.

Martin, I was elated to see you choose The Thing which means I wouldn't have to consider it. Then you walked it back.

I don't know if you were counting mine, but I want to clarify that's not the only reason I'm removing Aliens. I just don't think the movie is that great.

Yeah I didn't want to be too hasty. Last time we did something like this I made a mistake.

The 4 were Dave, KOL and two by oldkid.

I was also considering Les Diaboliques, but for different reasons. It just doesn't compete with the other titles on the list.

I suppose if I were going to make my choices because I didn't like them, Susperia and Nosferatu would probably be at the top.

The Descent

Are not at the same level as the horror classics.

Reading this again, did you have to decide between this and Se7en, which I see as the same type of film? Do you prefer Se7en to Silence of the Lambs?

This whole thing is terribly disappointing for many reasons and thus I use my vote on the game itself.

I'm stuck in a four way tie between Carrie, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Ringu and The Shining because none of those are the best version of their own stories.

So in the meantime I'm going with Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

P.S. Se7en is 100% horror.

ETA: I voted TCM out because it is awful, not some obnoxious pedantic point of whether it is horror.

Okay, let's get rid of The Thing.

There are films remaining that I've rated lower... The Phantom of the Opera, Hellraiser and Scream, to be precise (though I haven't seen the latter two in ages). But I confess there is a reactionary element to my vote. This movie gets such adoration heaped upon it that I don't understand. Maybe it's because I'm not a big Kurt Russell guy?
Title: Re: Shocktober Elimination Game (with 2 votes)
Post by: 1SO on October 07, 2018, 03:13:53 PM
You won't hear me complaining. I'm big on Kurt Russell and John Carpenter and while the film's effects are some of the greatest of all time, I don't get the adoration for much beyond that. (Much because the score and lighting are also cool, but that's it.)

I'm considering Eyes Without a Face, but would like to give it a 2nd chance. Other possibilities...
The Innocents - watching this again this month
Repulsion
The Shining - Bondo might do this for me
Videodrome

The Thing works for me for many reasons. The cast, the aesthetics, just the general idea of a monster than can take on the form of what it kills. Plus those special effects are possibly the best done in any horror film (or perhaps any film ever). But it's not an all-time favorite film for me, so I'm not too sad to see it eliminated.

Eh... to me, "scary" isn't a consideration. I think of this as "best movies that happen to fall somewhere in the horror genre".

So far the only one I'm truly bummed about is Repulsion. Se7en is really good but I agree it may be too far from the genre to qualify.

I'm 100% certain Bondo is going to eliminate one of my favorites.

I suppose we shall see.

I'm a bit confused about the presence of both The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 on the list since it's basically the same movie, but since I think I've only seen Evil Dead 2, that is the one I shall eliminate.

Just took out my #1.

I'll eliminate Hellraiser. I watched it once and it didn't make much of an impression. I think the lore around Pinhead is more intriguing than the actual films.
