(or seconded of the carry-over nomination).

pixote will let us know what carries over as soon as he takes care of 2018. But yes, I would expect this one to carry over along with plenty of other stuff. But as we did last year, only re-eligible films found on ballots will carry over. Anything else will need to be re-FYC'd. Just as an FYI.

Second! This line was great.

Hard disagree on Soundtrack. "Most" soundtrack for sure. It had a couple truly cringe-worthy needle drops.

Title: Re: FYC 2019 - General

Post as in after, not in the middle, of the credits. There’s only one of those I think.
Title: Re: FYC 2019 - General
Post by: Corndog on March 18, 2019, 03:27:50 PM
Yes, the other one is after the initial run of credits, then there is another at the very end of the scroll. But I think a lot of people would call both "post credit" sequences. So just to avoid confusion I will list it as Post-Credit Sequence #2.

Wouldn't End-Credit Sequence #2 be less confusing? [/2cents]

I'll second Moss.

Add in Heidecker too for supporting actor. Felt like the dad was the best of the core cast, but not sure I'd nominate him.

Don't know what to do with the Moss parts that really hit me, just don't think they'd fit in the scene categories and probably aren't single shots.

Not sure it's eligible, but also idk what the Fathom Events rule is either, that's how I saw it last year. Imagine it definitely hit the screen limited. On board with Best Animated as well, it made it's way in to my 2018 top 10, though I don't think the night is quite as long as you're making it out to be, oldkid  :P

Looks like English is listed as the primary language of the film, but I trust your judgement and the judgement of our voters. So if enough people like it/support it, the people will speak. So I'll definitely list it in the FYC for now.
Title: Re: FYC 2019 - General
Post by: FLYmeatwad on April 17, 2019, 08:19:09 PM
Yeah, it's on the edge, it definitely does use a a notable amount of English, but also feels like a bunch is subtitled and language switching going on through out. It's on the edge for me, and in the end I'm unsure if it'll make it to my final list, but think it's worth considering if others agree when it starts to open.

Not sure I understand the joke re Booksmart. Is it a white savior type of Best White People or a knock on the film's diversity, which I would have never considered to be a particular weakness.

Kinda just being random. Though the inciting incident relates to all all these kids getting into top schools, which sort of embodies the white, suburban, upper middle class perspective of the film — encouraging my brain to lump it together with other recent coming of age films (Thoroughbreds, Edge of Seventeen, Ladybird, Eighth Grade, etc.) which as a group exist in a pretty narrow space on the race-class spectrum, marking very little progress in that regard since John Hughes’ heyday.

I like all the films in the parenthesis way more, but it's a valid and good way to group those films, I think it's applicable and does keep them all kind of dwelling in the same space.

RE: Rocketman, the soundtrack is good, but huge missed opportunity to include the best song involving Elton John: Young Thug's "High."

The Souvenir

Probably other things too, need to think on it. Hopefully other people see it and fill in the gaps for me.

There's a dramatic scene I want to nominate, but not sure how to describe it.

The Souvenir

*Picture
*Director
Original Screenplay
*Actress (Honor Swinton Byrne)
Actor (Tom Burke)
Supporting Actress (Tilda Swinton)
Ensemble Cast
Editing
Soundtrack
Comedic Scene (Bed Dysmorphia)

The last two shots of the movie are both nice — the first being a moving camera shot that did exactly what I hoped it would do, right up until a self-reflexive glance; the second being the view of the world from inside a sound stage — but I can’t quire convince myself to FYC either. Even Editing, Soundtrack, and Supporting Actress we’re close class, but the last few years have taught me that I’m going to end up scavenging for nominees by ballot time, so better to over-FYC now.

Editing is a good call, and Soundtrack is used pretty effectively. That's a good comedic scene as well, likely the first part where I got on board with/understood Burke as more than just a character I thought I had figured out. Not sure how to go about nominating the scene where She definitely finds out that he stole her stuff and they have a conversation where she says something like, "I appreciate there are things you can't tell me." And he hits back with "There are things about me that drive you mad, and there are things about you that drive me mad." I'm doing a bad job of describing it, but the camera is kind of all just in one place, that thing really floored me in that moment, nearly started crying, and definitely realized just how strong the script was at that point.

I was planning to use the last image from the scene you describe as the screenshot for my review (if it’s in the trailer). Definitely a tough one to describe. I think the “I’m fine” scene/shot hit me a little harder.

2016 puts the film outside the three-year window, but historically we've give a single year leeway for a film that started on the festival circuit and finally found release. Any official international release in 2016 would disqualify the film, but I'm guessing all those 2016 dates in IMDb are festivals.

tl;dr - Eligible.

Going to second these, will add more later when I get around to Post 2 in the PFF thread. I'm going to call out, specifically, everything about Marriage Story, how mesmerizing Dogs Don't Wear Pants is, especially that lead actor, and Deerskin being so deserving of those nominations. Dujardin is fantastic, and I hated everything about The Artist, the soundtrack is really good, there is likely only one film with a better line (Beach Bum, and even that I'm not sure about, because that line CINECAST!ing crushes it every. single. time.), and please let us have a Best Jacket category. This has had me on Grailed, Etsy, and eBay looking for that same Killer Style.

This ended up being me talking about Deerskin a lot, but I mostly came here with the intention of highlighting Marriage Story. While the 'big' Netflix films have mostly missed for me (though I did like The Irishman a good deal, it's just probs the worst of The Departed and beyond Marty), this one really is remarkable. Not sure if ScarJo has ever been better (maybe in Her?), and while I don't think it's Noah or Driver at their best, that's not saying a lot when you consider how great they have been.

Big FYC post from me, haven't done any this year, so bear with me. Trying to keep it to stuff I do think I'll very likely be voting for. Except for the lines (and possibly the scenes), I'm just trying to put some of them down because I find those categories very frustrating to actually vote for in the end without FYC reference... Portrait de la jeune fille en feu / Portrait of the lady on fire

Shot - Last shot

I thought I might see this here because of the nature of what's happening emotionally and the length of the shot, but I'd like to nominate one towards the beginning. Call it "One/Two on a cliff"

This is how it starts, with the lead in our foreground, but as she looks deeper into the frame

The camera does this hide and reveal a couple of times for dramatic reasons, but it's also a really unique way to frame the women.

Overlooked is not a category one can campaign for, it's a make-up category pixote creates out of films that get close but fail in multiple categories.

That being said, 3 Faces certainly has been overlooked, it's another really strong outing by Panahi.

I don't have IMDb Pro, but what I can see on BoxOfficeMojo, this appears to be correct. We'll let pixote overrule us if we're wrong, but for now I will include it.

Want to catch up with that and One Cut Of The Dead before I wrap up the year, for sure. The Congress doc I have always assumed would get a nomination. Watched about 10 mins when it came out before tapping out, but will push through when it makes the Top 5, probably.

Little Women
Best Line - "And if the main character’s a girl make sure she’s married by the end. Or dead. Either way."

Or is this the better line: “Women have minds and souls as well as hearts, ambition and talent as well as beauty and I’m sick of being told that love is all a woman is fit for. But... I am so lonely.” ?

Yours is the better line, pix, but I like both of them. Ronan's performance of her line is wonderful, and Letts' is as well.

Little Women

Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Actress - Saoirse Ronan
Best Supporting Actress - Florence Pugh
Best Ensemble Cast

(thirded all)

What can I say, I think the Oscars got it right. Might vote for it in Director and Picture, but not confident enough to FYC there. As for lines, I like the "main character" one better, the "I'm so lonely" one is more about Ronan's performance than it is about the line.

Sorry if this is long, not sure how to split it up in columns. Must've copied it wrong.

Best Debut Feature
1. Honeyland
2. The Last Black Man In San Francisco
3. An Elephant Sitting Still
4. The Heiresses
5. The Chambermaid

Best Dramatic Scene
1. Demian Hernandez brooding in the bathtub in Too Late To Die Young
2. The iPhone suicide confessional video in 3 Faces
3. The killing of the seagull (though I despise violence against animals, this is purposeful and poetic) in The Lighthouse

1. The three cops arrive to the scene at the diner in The Dead Don't Die

5. Like, so many instances in The Lighthouse, the movie is a freakin' riot

Best Shot
1. When Robert Pattinson finally sees the light in The Lighthouse
2. Looking out of that huge window in Parasite and seeing lightning strike, or alternatively seeing the light on in the tent
3. Inside Clara's room of the house with 2 1/2 walls in Too Late To Die Young (not poverty porn, a family headed up by an actress starting out, and kind of over again, in an eco-friendly planned community in BFE Chile)
4. Hands Across America/Last shot in Us
5. Final shot of Starfish

Best Line
1. "You don't get to hate it unless you love it." - Jimmie Fails, Last Black Man in San Francisco
2. "I wanna be what intimidates me." - Casey, The Art of Self-Defense
3. Willem Dafoe's quasi-battle rap diss on Robert Pattinson after Pattinson makes an offensive remark about his cooking in The Lighthouse. No way I can quote all that here.
4. From 3 faces, a recording of a poem by the eldest of the three generation of Iranian entertainers, Shahrzad, an oft-abused and outcast former actress and active artists, who we never actually see: "I had reached the height of uncertainty. Wishing to know the names. The hand of the supervisor made the hammer dance in the air and broke the breath of immaculate dawn. Against the red metal tip hanging on the school pine. Sounds, rings, rings. Silence tortured innocence. The first prayer was for me an obvious curse. Standing. Sitting. I did not say: present. In this case, you are absent."
5. "What do you know about cruelty?" - Monte, High Life
