Title: Weather Report
Post by: skjerva on October 27, 2007, 12:04:29 AM
Where are you and what is the weather (and how do you do with that weather)?

It's raining cats and dogs... very messy indeed.

I love the rain, so it's cool, but I would prefer if it would stop tomorrow so I can go out and have some fun this weekend.

It's only sprinkling kitties and puppies here in Chicago.  I also love the wet weather.  I'll pretty much be studying during the days so don't mind the rain :P

Kitties and puppies make a much cuter mess on the pavement...

Rain has left my tiny little town and it a cool (high 50s?) partly cloudy day here with a slight breeze.  I'm off to the library where I won't enjoy weather for another 5-8 hours

The fog is starting to burn off.  Looks like it'll be overcast, with a 50% chance of rain.  Like every day in the Seattle area.

It may be redundant since skjerva and I live in the same city... it has been a nice fall day. The leaves have fallen and the wind is blowing them around, which is always a nice effect.

Coming off a week of beautiful spring weather, we're now experiencing high wind, rain squalls, and a low last night of 7C (44F).  High today is 16C (61F).  The ocean is choppy with white caps and big swells.  Our beach is still eroded but the sand is returning slowly, in time for summer days which are right around the corner.  However, today we're freezing!  We can't take the cold.

Extremely bright and sunny. Windy and chilly. A week of rain is finally over. New Jersey says hello!

Edit: The fact that it sounds like a poem was not intended.

It's snow, snow, snowing. I'm still perfecting the art of removing my shoes without getting my socks wet or my floor all gunky. Hey, it's the first big snow... I just need a little practice. I did implement a 3 mat entrance policy: heavy thick mat on the outside, smaller mat in the foyer, and a thin mat (for drying of shoes) on the inside. A 3 mat policy is the only way to go!

That 3-mat system sounds awesome, winrit - I'll have to share your idea with my hubby (who's very into "systems"). We've been struggling (and I do mean "struggling" - serious discussions) for some time about how to solve the mud problem. His idea was to put some sort of a de-shoeing bench in our entry way: dirty feet on one side - remove shoes - swing legs over bench - place socked feet on clean carpet - enter mud-free home. Nice idea - but not very practical really - a bench won't fit in our entry way. Plus I doubt my 87-year-old grandma, when she visits, can do much leg-swinging.

It's dark and gloomy today in Dallas.  I'm lonely because no one is talking on the boards.  I'm  temporarily (like for the last couple of hours and maybe another hour more) out of work.  I'm just sitting here waiting for any kind of response.  I crave posts.  Feed me.

They aren't mine.  My brothers each have a dog and since we're all living together right now (long story), I get to play with the two cutest doggies ever all the time! :)

Junior is the older dog.  He was rescued from the side of the road about 6 years ago.  We think he's Pit/Rotweiller, but we're not certain.  He kind of looks like a Rhodesian Ridgeback.  He's sweet, but he's gotten kind of lazy recently.  I think it's because our other dog is tiring him out.

Jack is about a year old.  He was given to my brother last Christmas by a roommate.  He's 25 lbs and all energy.  My brother swears he's German shepard and coyote, but I don't know.  He has German Shepard coloring and he's just a real sweetie pie, although he is a little skiddish.

I heart my puppies!!!

I recorded it and my recording ran out of steam prior to the end. I was enjoying the match up until that point. I caught the highlights later and the early Roddick exit.

Good match, but Roddick sucks right?

I think Sharapova may have this one wrapped up. She is serving monster like.

That actually sounds closer to what it's normally like around here in winter, and we live for those clear days of glory. And when clear, we don't usually say, 'it's a sunny day,' we say, 'the mountain's out today.'  :)

Sigh, the NW forecast:

Tuesday: 44, breeze with rain and drizzle
Wednesday: 42, breezy and cold with rain
Thursday: 45, breezy and rainy
Friday: 46, cloudy and breezy with a chance of rain
Saturday: 49, cloudy with rain possible

(Love how they try to say the same thing 5 different ways)

"The sun did not shine.
It was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold, wet day.

I sat there with Sally.
We sat there, we two.
And I said, "How I wish
We had something to do!"

Too wet to go out
And too cold to play ball.
So we sat in the house,
We did nothing at all.

So all we could do was to
Sit!
    Sit!
        Sit!
           Sit!
And we did not like it.
Not one little bit."

We actually had a tornado warning here today.  Turns out it was issued due to probability based on conditions and not on actual sighting.  The passing through of the storm system was anticlimactic--a few minutes of ominous dark sky, followed by some gusty winds and really heavy rains.  Then it slacked off, and Jan and I went back to our naps...

The good news is that there was really heavy rainfall over all the metro area reservoir lakes, which should help the drought.

Title: Re: Weather Report
Post by: choatime on March 15, 2008, 06:57:46 PM
Those storms came through Columbia, too.  Well, sort of.  Today was the St. Patrick's Day celebration where they close down the streets so lots of people can get drunk and wear green t-shirts with moderately funny puns on them.  And there were bands, probably 30 of them on 5 or 6 stages.  I had knew exactly one of these bands--the Avett Brothers, who were scheduled to close one of the stages from 4:40 to 6:00.  At 4:00, it rained for 5 minutes, but based on the threat of heavy storms (which to my knowledge have all a little to the north of us) they canceled the Avetts.  Argh!  I still haven't seen them.

The bands that I did see were kinda lame.  One "received the second most radio airplay for an unsigned band in 2007!"  Woohoo!  I understand why they are unsigned.  Apparently it's a frat-rock band that hooked up with a female finalists on that CBS reality show where you audition to be the new frontman for a band fighting with has-beenity.  But, a free t-shirt that was thrown from the stage hit me in the chest.  "shamRockin'" it said.   Clever, Budweiser, but if I were in a band, I don't think I'd want the word "sham" to be anywhere near my stage show.

There are more of you who like rainy days? I thought I was the only one! Maybe I'm the only one in CT.

I like rainy days for two reasons:

--we have had a wicked drought for so long, I'm really happy to have a day of nice steady reasonable rain instead of one quick burst or nothing nothing nothing for weeks at a time.

--I like them when I have no particular place to be and I can stay home and inside guiltlessly doing the things I really like to do, that all involve puttering around indoors.  I don't feel like I should be out getting sunshine and fresh air for my health, or doing endless yard chores.

I don't like them when I have to be running from place to place and driving is stressful and people are idiots and I'm getting repeatedly soaked.

And I HATED them when I was working in patrol and there were accidents on the freeway if there was so much as a glass of water spilled on the road.  The only thing scarier than working an accident in the pouring rain on the highway is working one in snow or ice.

Yep.  No tornadoes this weekend, at least!

And my girl and I are going to see (blush) Barry Manilow tonight!  I got her tickets for Chrismukkah as sort of a joke--we have a soft spot for 70s music but I'd never pay big money for a concert.  But I discovered that they had 400 level seats for only $10.00 and I thought, stocking stuffer!  Then the thing was postponed due to an ice storm in January.  So tonight is finally the big night.

The thermometer outside is pointing at 49 celsius. It's pretty similar statewide. That, and the heavy winds, are making this one of the worst days for bushfires in the last 20 - 30 years, since Ash Wednesday, when 70 people died in fires.

Luckily, a cool change is coming, and by Tuesday they're predicting temperatures under 20 in Melbourne.

Melbourne had an all time record high temperature of 46.4 today.

Yeah. It's been kinda hot.

The result of this, is, as I suggested earlier, bushfires. At about 8 I was at work in a pizza shop, and over the smell of the pizza was the tang of eucalyptus smoke. Thing is, there's not even a fire that close to us.

It's pretty massive.

Stay safe.  We have family in Bendigo.  We haven't heard about them yet, but they also have a Melbourne home so we're hoping they did the right thing and left that area.

We are expecting our heat and possibly fires at the end of this coming week.  40C predicted with dry winds.

Have you had much in the last week or so? It's been pretty wet down here lately.

Sounds like our typical weather here. By February-March, it gets really old. I don't mind it so much now.

I'm assuming you meant really cold.

Yah, it's not great, but you do get used to it. I just wish Irish weather would make up it's mind. It's never just raining or sunny, it switches every 20 or so minutes.

where do you live again?

When I was in Ireland it was the pokey, needle-like rain that pissed me off. Especially when you're freezing on a dock waiting for a ferry and the wind is about 4923857 miles an hour.

Nope, never very cold, just really wet. I live in NW Washington state - north of Seattle. It rains 9 months out of the year here, the drizzling, unexciting kind of rain. And we don't get many brilliant bursts of sun during those 9 months - most of our sun happens July-September. Still, I love it here - it's green and gorgeous, and when "the mountain is out," it's heaven.

Oh right. Sorry, I should've noticed that you meant old (and that you would not let a spelling error like that fall through the cracks.). Well, you have very defined seasons which is good, and it sounds like it's very beautiful up there. Drizzle rain is not fun(I happen to love to go for walks when it's raining heavily, but it never seems to be over here either). 9 Months is a lot, I dont think even we get that much!

there was a massive storm here last night. Now it has totally cleared up and it is getting hot and humid - too humid. I left the tropics because i hate that weather. I think it is going to be another hot summer this christmas - it got to 47 celsius (117 Fahrenheit) last year. Not looking forward to that again......at least you don't have to light the BBQ to cook the prawns in summer  ;D

Don't convert it for them! Maintain a level of mystery...

and no smiling when talking about Victorian summers, except when comparing them to Qld summers. [Yuck!]

melbourne summers get hotter than brisbane summers - just not humid, nor as long - so they are slightly more bearable.

I swear.. if my mother asks me one more time how the weather is here...

The Extended forecast for the next 10 days says:

Lows: between 76-77
Highs: between 87-88
with scattered thunderstorms.

that is each day, every day for the next 10 days.  And if I were to extend it for the next 365 days...the highs will get a bit hotter during the "summer" but it will be scattered thunderstorms for the next 365 days in the forecast.

So why mom.. why ask about the weather for a place that you know it does not change????

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. And by that I mean it's kind of cold, the sun is shinning bright, and the sky is cloudless and blue, like the color of lakes I imagine once existed, but are now too polluted and covered with Lily-pads to be anything more than an endless pit of depression contained in a wasteland of weeds. This weather is so dumb.

Yep. And I'm actually enjoying it after the snow of the past few days. (I'm such a PNW person.  :-\ )
As a prairie kid, I want the snow back. Of course I don't drive so school buses aren't a hazard for me.
I can see that. :) I did enjoy my years as an undergrad in NW Iowa - snow on the ground all winter, sub-zero temperatures - one gets into the rhythm of it. I just feel unprepared for it here (and everyone else seems to be, too, including bus drivers!).

I love rain and snow, I wish we had it more often. :(. This weather is so depressing.

It was very nice and even spring-ish over the weekend.  I'm so relieved to have had a dry weekend to get the front yard cleaned up.

It started raining overnight and is supposed to rain most of today.  Around 4 AM it started thunderstorming, which freaks one of our dogs out and she had to get out of her crate (YAP! YAP! YAP!) and into the bed to hush her up, at which point she nervously began licking the flannel sheets.

I was up and out of bed by 5 since sleeping was no longer possible, between the sheet licking, the other dog coming in every 60 seconds or so to check and see if he was invited onto the bed, and Jan growling at both of them.

At least I had a really good nap yesterday or I'd be effin miserable right now.

the (next) coming snowpocalypse will mostly strike north of here...yay! (http://www.accuweather.com/regional-news-story.asp?region=eastusnews)

Quote
A powerful storm of historical proportions is aiming at much of the Northeast Thursday into Friday and will follow up to a foot and a half of snow through Wednesday over upstate New York and western New England.

This second storm will be nothing short of a monster. Even in light of the blizzards earlier this winter that targeted the southern mid-Atlantic, this may be the one that people remember the most this winter in parts of New England and the northern mid-Atlantic.

At its peak, the storm will deliver near hurricane-force wind gusts (74 mph) blinding snow falling at the rate of over an inch per hour. For some people in upstate New York and eastern and northern Pennsylvania, this may seem more like a "snow hurricane" rather than a blizzard.

Cities likely to be impacted by heavy snow for all or at least part of the storm include: New York City, Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, Scranton, Allentown, Reading, Williamsport and Burlington.

The storm also deliver heavy rain and flooding northeast of the center of circulation.

The cities of Boston, Providence and Portland may have their hands full with coastal flooding problems.

The combination of wind, heavy rain and heavy snow will lead to extensive power outages and property damage. Where numerous trees and lines are blown down, the power could be out for a week in some areas.

Impacts on travel in the region may be severe. The effects of the storm will lead to flight delays and cancellations. Some major roads may be blocked by snow, downed trees or flooding.

Many schools will be closed or have early dismissals.

Blowout tides caused by strong offshore winds from New Jersey to North Carolina may pose problems for coastal waterway interests.

Exactly where this storm forms and tracks will determine whether you get all snow, all rain, snow to rain or just snow showers. A variance in track of as little as 50 miles will make a difference.

One thing is for sure, most people in the mid-Atlantic and New England will have problems from this storm's strong winds. ::)

Keep checking in at AccuWeather.com for updates on snowfall and other impacts on this potentially very dangerous, destructive storm.

We got cricket ball sized hail in the Dandenongs - and they were really spiky. It was ferocious. The car has tiny dints all over. The skylight survived because I got it covered before the storm really hit.

I collected some of the big spiky hail stones to keep as a souvenir, but then we lost power for about 24 hours, and well, at least they kept the milk cool for a while before they melted.

I guess summer is over.....

Last night there was an electrical storm here that lasted hours. I noticed flashes of lightning in the sky when I got home at 6.30, and it was still going when I put the bins out at 11.30. No thunder, just continuous flashes of lightning, moving across the city. Really, really pretty.

I just looked up when I heard a rumble of thunder to notice that it is DARK outside.  Dark like late dusk dark.  It's 12:16 PM.  I think we are about to have a beeeeeeeg thunderstorm.  Guess movie/tv plans are off for a bit.  I will be reading, I think.

How to know there's a big storm coming:  I look down and every dog in the house has suddenly materialized around my feet, and Joey is panting enough to make the whole room smell like dogbreath.  Time to shut down the computer and move to a room with better ventilation...

MUCH too gorgeous to be reading and prepping to teach Poe's "The Black Cat" and "The Fall of the House of Usher." It oughta be dark and rainy and generally oppressive. This bright sun and those puffy white clouds are killing Poe's atmosphere.

Well yes, he is, but I am talking about my other brother  ;) He rotates weekly between the SES and the Ambulance. They are saying the broken creek will peak at about midnight tonight, but hopefully they have raised the bank high enough. It shouldn't get near you place anyway. Shepparton and Kialla are probably going to be worse hit, like Wangaratta, but Numurkah and Nathalia should be okay, especially as the Numurkah Lake is dried out right now, a good flood will fill it up.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs almost made my list.

Hello!

I'm here to tell you that you have exactly one day left to get a list of your top 30 books (ranked, please) to me in PM form. You can send a list that utilizes the full thirty spots or you can vote for your top 10, top 5, top 3, or even just one book. You must like at least one book, right? You can even send in your list from the last time we did this if you want. Here's the rules:

1. All books are up for consideration. Fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, books of poetry and short stories, plays.
2. Series will be put on the list in one spot. This means that Harry Potter will take a spot, not Prisoner of Azkaban.
2a. However, if you would like to vote for a single book in a series, please do. They will count as a vote for the series and I'll put the number of votes each separate part gets in the post for the book series. Like this.
3. Even comic strips are up for consideration. The full run of Calvin and Hobbes or The Far Side would take one spot each, if they get the votes.
4. You can submit a ranked ballot of 30 books to me in PM form starting right now!
5. The deadline for submission is November 5th. The countdown will be some short time later, TBD.
6. Please ask other questions in this thread or send me a PM.

Thanks for taking the time to make our top 100 books list a success!

It still had that glum, rainy, autumn without the deep reds and oranges feel, which is dperessing. Shouldn't cold air begit the cold air feel in the landscape? Meh. I hate this country's weather.

Wow, this thread has been locked since Dec, 2010.  Now, it's unlocked.

We are having wild weather here as a result of a cyclone which came ashore farther north.  The surf is up to the walking path.  I've never seen it closer than 5+ meters back from the path.  The wind is blowing a gale and we're under a tornado watch.  We have electricity but most of the coast doesn't.  Flooding is possible in Brisbane again, but they are letting the water out of the dam now in prep for spill-overs.  Water is backing up in the Brisbane River though, not a good sign.

John and I are safe and sound in our apt building's upper floor. We have no threat from wind, rain, flooding, but it's amazing to watch the wave action and see the wind effects.

We're coming off of three days where it rained more than it didn't. And just when I thought the sun was finally coming back out yesterday, we get the wildest deluge yet last night. It was probably enough precipitation to skew the whole year's rainfall stats in typically arid Phoenix. Weather app says 40% chance of rain today. This spring's weed crop is going to be impressive...

The world is upside down. Those temperatures... we usually get them at least at some point during the winter for a few days. This winter has been so disappointing so far. It's just like autumn, but worse. So grey. A few degrees above zero, Celsius scale. Since we're living so far up north it's pretty dark anyway and since it's constantly raining - or almost raining - it adds to the darkness. It's like dementors, it sucks the life out of you.
The latest reports have hinted that we might get a few degrees below the freezing point towards the end of the week and after that - possibly - even a little bit of snow. I'll believe it when I see it. But I certainly hope they're right this time. Lack of real winter is overrated.

I ditched my old car because once I got to NDak it was terrible gas mileage and let frost form on the inside, which I assumed was something to do with it being old and not as sealed. Turns out my new car gets terrible gas mileage in winter and interior frost. Don't really regret the shift though.

The thing I liked is all the steam vents on the outside of the building (such as for laundry) have trails of frost as the steam immediately freezes to the wall rather than floating off.

Same here, those heathens. Even if school is cancelled, we might still have a basketball game 2 hours away. Pain in my buttocks.

I, too, hope my classes get cancelled tomorrow. They weren't tonight, and I had a fun fall on some icy steps.

Yea, but no one knows how to drive on it because we get it about once every 2-3 years.  :P

The summer is my natural enemy, why do you think I embrace the cold New England winters so?

Or excessively fast, that way you spend less time on the dangerous icy roads.

We went wild and got into the 50s today, so I got my car washed. I know it will be filthy again in no time but just getting that 5-6 months of accumulated salt and sand off of it is a big relief.

Also, I keep thinking the Frozen spoiler thread is a weather thread.

I realized how cold it's been here the other day. It was only a couple degrees over freezing and we were working outside. I got so "hot" I ended up down to my t-shirt

Luckily there's a football match on TV ;D with a goalkeeping howler of the highest order - well done Sir!

Hot Hot Hot!!! What a wonderful day to be out in the garden :) Another three/four months of this would be great.

It's gonna get even hotter tomorrow ;D

28 for you and 36 for me, but you have 31% humidity, so that probably evens things out. I won't go out into my garden in this heat! Any work will have to done early or at dusk. :)

Apparently Canada is on fire and all the smoke is coming to Fargo, probably to shop at the mall and take it back duty free.

We'd have that kind of thing happening in Singapore every 5-6 years thanks to the forest fire in Malaysia. ;D Gives the whole country a thick smog that makes it difficult for us to travel outside. Luckily, I'm an introvert.

As for the regular weather here, there's nothing much to report, I'm afraid. It's either rain or shine here, and today, it's mostly Cloudy at 31°C/88°F, humidity is 58%, precipitation is a 0%, while the wind speed is 7mph. All things usual as always.

Warm and windy - which translates to major dust/allergies.
Summer is out there lurking...blech...I hate summer.
