Seems possibly worthwhile to make a space for talk of the boards.  Look what I just noticed:

Weird. Why would someone print that one especially? Think that someone is doing a psychology or psychoanalysis project?

That is not at all where I thought it was from. I still may have seen the original art, but I was thinking The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

It's a possibility. Also, apparently many many rock bands are fans of it, and subsequently steal the art work.

pixote once said something about "bots" and printing... but I don't remember

Yeah, not to drain Who's Online of all this romanticism, but most Guests aren't real users.  Rather, they're automated web crawlers blindly following links so that Google, MSN, and other search engines know what pages exist around the web, pages like these:

http://www.google.com/search?q=profile+site%3Afilmspotting.net&btnG=Search

The bots follow the links to "Print" just like any other, and it shows up on Who's Online accordingly.  (That being said, the "Print" option is sometimes nice for viewing a multi-page thread all on one screen.)

"Unknown Action" and "Nothing, or Nothing You Can See..." (for known users) are usually related to modifying/deleting a post and various administrator actions.

Cropped!   ;)

Anyway, the more pertinent question is, "Where is the Godfather on that list?"

What about that made your head hurt?

I was okay with meta, even meta2, but that there was metameta2 - 1, which made me think of Rob Corddry asking, "...or did I just blow your mind?"  To which I answered, "Well, yeah ... kinda."

Actually, I think it's just that my eyes are too dry right now.  Plus I was jealous that irma vep seems to be stalking alexarch, and envy gives me migraines.

I'm starting a new, daily feature of this great thread. It's called "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!". Sometimes it will be someone who hasn't been here in ages; other times it will be someone who just doesn't post very often.

Here is today's pick:

fireantburial (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=3050) got his start December 12, 2006, and was last seen around here on December 12, 2006. He hails from Philadelphia, PA, and seems to have an obsession with either kosher, bacon, or lobster (all three?). His screen name is one of my personal favorites, and I like to think that there is some deeply personal and meaningful story behind it. Though his first and second of three posts related to a complaint about some oversights in poll questions, he bounced back by suggesting a marathon consisting of "Bond-Influenced" films, among them:

Austin Powers
Shaft
The Hunt for Red October
XXX
The Nude Bomb
Inspector Gadget

While a brilliant idea in theory, the only problem is that whoever would partake in the marathon would have to sit through XXX. Also, I like to think that almost everyone has seen those first three. Still, perhaps one day he will be honored properly with a variation on his idea.

Way to go fireantburial, you are the first "Basil's Overlooked Filmspott of the Day!!woot!!"!

Proudly presenting today's "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!":

90lb girl (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=2413) first came onto the scene November 1, 2006 and was last seen around here on January 19, 2007. Though, clearly, her presence was brief, she always had something to contribute. With a total of 8 posts, all of which can be found in The Movie Game thread, 90lb girl clearly loved the thrilling nature of the game. Historically, on November 16, 2006, she correctly identified an image from Top Secret!. Then, when taking her turn, she proceeded to profess her excitement about Val Kilmer's underwater fight scenes. 90lb girl either has a great sense of humor, occasionally drools over Kilmer's bod, or, may, in fact, be Kilmer himself.

She then posted an image from Midnight Cowboy, which spoko correctly identified. On November 21, she commenced a regimen of one post a month, which, while short-lived, showed remarkable self-control. On January 19, she made her final bow by mistaking The Searchers for Once Upon a Time in the West.

For her (his?) dedication to the original movie-related forum game during a three-month presence, 90lb girl is today's "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!". A failure to mention her inscrutable screen name would be an unforgivable oversight, since it is clearly what initially gained my attention.  While the name is undoubtedly extremely personable in nature, I can imagine a few possible explanations:

1. 90lb girl is a girl who weighs 90 pounds.
2. 90lb girl wishes she was a girl who weighs 90 pounds.
3. 90lb girl knows a girl who weighs 90 pounds.
4. 90lb girl is, as considered above, Val Kilmer.

On November 17, 2006, 90lb girl correctly identified spoko's second still from Love & Basketball, making it two wins in a row for 90lb girl (not counting Midnight Cowboy, of course).  Spoko confirmed this guess the following day, but by November 18th, 90lb girl had still not returned to post a new image — a delay which caused sodajerk to ask, "So what happened here?"  karlwinslow eventual stepped in to save the day.  He's good like that.

Fun Fact: In the alphabetical list of all members with at least one post, 90lb girl first.  Is that what brought 90lb girl to Basil's attention?  Who can say.

A warm congratulations to today's "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!":

toetappinjesus (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=3808) registered just a little over a year ago on January 21, 2007.  He is obviously a morning person, having signed up around 6:15 AM CST, and with one of two posts being at about 4 AM (again, local time). He stuck around for much of 2007, tallying an online time of 2 hours, 20 minutes.

His first post came at about 6 PM on the day he registered, in which he listed his top 10 most re-watchable films of all time.  While the thought he put into this list is clearly honorable, his choices of Ocean's Eleven at #10 and Almost Famous at #2 is even more commendable.  This debut post was certainly worthy of attention, but what came next is what earns him this prestigious decoration.

His second and most recent post was on September 12, 2007. Clearly, toetappinjesus loves the boards and wants to contribute, and emerging after an 8-month absence is a rare and distinguished feat. In responding to the announcement of Sam's departure from Filmspotting, he was extremely genuine and personal. Mentioning his long-time listenership (since Cinecast #4), he declared his thorough enjoyment of all of the following films: Ocean's 12, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, American Dreamz, and 300.  I can't help but wonder if Sam, myself, and the mysterious toetappinjesus were birthed out of the same film-fandom womb.

While it is difficult to pinpoint the origin of his screen name, his animated avatar provides a manifestation of the image that was surely ingrained in toetappinjesus' mind when creating his identity. Appropriately, he was last active on Christmas Day, 2007, and it is my sincere hope that this recognition is enough to resurrect toetappinjesus from the Filmspotter grave, or tomb, if you will.

I actually signed it then went back and edited to delete the signature.  There it looked more like a caption to the image then a signature.  Also, I feel funny signing if there's no text at the end of the post, like in the movie still game or even the word association thread.

Three cheers for today's "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!"

RSCDoug (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=4285) came onto the Filmspotter scene the 20th of February, 2008. He immediately displayed an impressive cinematic palate, a curiosity about all areas of the boards, and a genuine, personal aura. Above all, it was his affinity for ellipses that solidified my inclination that Doug would fit right in.

On just his second day here, Doug properly introduced himself and shared a link to his South Jersey-themed blog (http://sjoutdoors.blogspot.com/).  Further personal revelations illustrated his love of fishing, Filmspotting, and folk. What really makes Doug stand out, though, is his respect for Unbreakable, his willingness to spend 13 hours in a theater, and his enthusiasm for films of all genres. His favorite films of all time, shared in his 20th post, exemplifies this broad taste:

North by Northwest
Shawkshank
Truman Show
Big Lebowski
Shaun of the Dead

His presence on the forums was widely felt in his first few days of life, and his contributions to some under-appreciated threads (Beginners' Marathon #2: Vertigo (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=3138.msg85961#msg85961), Re: Post a Pic of Yourself Here...Or Your Dog...Or Cat (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=805.msg86462#msg86462), and Six Degrees (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=3064.msg86565#msg86565)) are commendable. Having posted in almost every board in the forum by day 2, Doug racked up an impressive average of 12.5 posts per day. That said, he was last seen at 1:16 PM on February 22, 2008, so we can only hope that Doug may one day prove he can deliver on the promise he initially displayed.

Today, a very special "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!:

jabbakahut (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=3989) made his first appearance on the boards on May 25, 2007. His first post came that very same day, in which he expressed interest in participating in the Photography Competition (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2076.0).  However, no further mention of the competition came from jabbakahut, so one must imagine that he got distracted by the arrival of Skywalker, Leia, and Chewbacca. He didn't post again until October 2 of the same year, at which point he playfully commented on the original post in the Concern with Show thread (link purposefully absent).

jabbakahut has one of the most appropriate, seductive avatars on the boards, so it is my sincere hope that one day soon he might return to display his love for Star Wars, jabba, and lasagna. Of course, I'm referring to his patented Sam Van Hallgren nickname - "President Garfield Loves Lasagna", which was surprisingly suitable. Though jabba never formally introduced himself, he did display his age and location on his profile, which, sadly, is not in fact a galaxy far, far away.

Today, a more serious "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!":

Jack Lumber (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=2789) registered on December 01, 2006, and has been posting rather consistently ever since, with his last appearance coming on January 26, 2008.  A huge fan of Sergio Leone, four of his first ten posts contained some mention of the director. Additionally, he zealously expressed admiration for several overlooked, under-appreciated films:  Frog, The Good Shepherd, The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, and Clash of the Titans. However, he condemned as overrated Titanic, Rushmore, and The Squid and the Whale.

Jack Lumber often exhibited an abrasive, callous demeanor as well as general backwardness in cinematic taste. For example, I find The Good Shepherd incredibly overrated and Titanic somewhat underrated at this point (at least by Filmspotters). What does this mean in terms of Jack Lumber's identity? Well, if you'll allow me to postulate, I think you'll actually find it quite obvious. The backwardness I spoke of earlier can only be assumed as an intentional hint to the man behind the curtain. Simply reverse the two words in his screen name, and his identity is nearly revealed: Lumber Jack. This maneuver also explains his harsh personality when disagreeing with another poster's claims. For example, this post in reference to the Live Free or Die Hard trailer:

But it has all the drawbacks you mentioned AND the trailer sucks something rotten!

The trailer sucks? THE TRAILER SUCKS!!!

Andyg, you suck!

While it can be assumed that this intolerance was only in good fun, there is no doubt that the man who eventually claimed to be a mister "Jordan Parmenter" does, in fact, bare a more irrefutable resemblance to a man such as this:

Jack Lumber - you almost fooled us all. If not for "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!", perhaps you could have kept us in the dark forever. Those of you who hail from Illinois - be on the lookout for the now infamous lumberjack Jordan Parmenter.

Today, a somewhat abbreviated "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!":

dootdootmeeep (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=2088) made dootdootmeeep's first forum appearance on September 13, 2006 and made dootdootmeeep's first six of eight posts that very day. dootdootmeeep displayed natural inquisitiveness and curiosity. Though dootdootmeeep's respect for Daniel Craig and distaste for Thumbsucker are both signs of astuteness, dootdootmeeep additionally claimed to have fallen asleep during Matchstick Men. I refuse to admit that this is in any way correlated to the merits of Ridley Scott's film, so I attribute the incident purely to fatigue. In fact, I have to wonder if dootdootmeeep often experiences on-setting sleepiness during movies, since in a second of dootdootmeeep's few posts dootdootmeeep claimed to have never made it through Full Metal Jacket for that very same reason.  Come to think of it, dootdootmeep, when verbalized, can almost be taken as the sound of an offbeat snore.

Congratulations dootdootmeeep on being "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!"; you may have my very favorite screen name on the boards, if due only to the presumably excess 'e' in 'meeep'.

Proudly presenting another edition of "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!:

Slappy san (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=4145) registered and last appeared on October 14, 2007. Though his profile indicates an average of .015 posts per day, can we really count the days since October 14 against him? Who are we to penalize Slappy san for whatever reasons have caused his absence? Shouldn't Slappy san instead be considered one of the most consistent posters on the forums? On every day he was logged in he produced two posts. Quite a feat!

Though Slappy san has yet to say much around here, it is clear that he is a dedicated Filmspotting listener. It is also evident that he was somewhat uncertain about the workings of the forums, since he had trouble editing his first post. Both of his two contributions were related to an inquisition (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2564.msg45782#msg45782) about the quotes that are used in the show to preface Massacre Theater. What followed was a sort of one-up-manship  among some of the boards' regular posters, each attempting to help the new friend in need to a greater degree. Slappy san stuck around just long enough to read all three responses to his question, and one can only imagine that he is enjoying the show much more thoroughly now that he can identify all the quotes used interchangeably before the boys massacre another [beloved?] screenplay.

Lastly, the time zone Slappy san has indicated on his profile is quite curious. It is that of a few select locations - eastern Maine, the east coast of Canada, the Domincan Republic, central South America, and the west coast of Greenland.

Cheers, Slappy san - please join us again real soon!

Today's super exciting edition of "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!":

mjpmvp11 (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=4052), also known as Michael J. Parks of Sugar Land, Texas, registered on July 20, 2007.  Michael is a self-proclaimed MVP, or most valuable player, an honor I would not fail to bestow upon him. To me, a most valuable player must be a consistently positive influence on his or her teammates. Presuming that we, Filmspotter nation, are a team of sorts, it is my duty to recognize Michael J. Parks not only as "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!" but also as July 27, 2007's most valuable player.

Parks made his first 8 posts on the 27th, each of which was a slam dunk, a home run, if you will. Shortly after recommending Jason Schwartzman's album and My Boys, the original comedy from self-proclaimed laugh-factory TBS, Parks' hot streak really took off with a series of 6 posts, all in a favorite forum of mine - Overlooked Films. The Matador, American Splendor, BUBBA HO-TEP, Chumbscrubber, The Counte of Monte Carlo, and The Proposition were the targets of his love-fest. With alarming positivity (see: avatar) and insight, he displayed the tell-tale characteristics of an all-time great Filmspotter.  Michael J. Parks, after reviewing your incredible contributions on July 27th, I can't help but say that you really hit it out of the park!

Sadly, Parks has posted only sporadically since then, most recently to name Juno his favorite film of 2007. While we all wish Parks would join us more frequently, let us give him the recognition he receives by naming him "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!".

Michael Parks of Sugar Land, TX, "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!" also is a Massacre Theatre winner: #174 identifying Shakespeare In Love and ordering The Departed as his prize.

"Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!" of the day:

Dman (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=3959) was with us for a period of about 6 months from April to November, 2007. Described as a 45-year-old male from Washington, D.C., there is little to be ascertained about his identity from his three posts, the first of which was an endearing thanks to Adam and Sam for playing his voicemail on the show. Filmspotting #158 was the episode, and Dman's comments on Grave of the Fireflies were honorably juxtaposed with those of Roger Ebert.

If one theme can be traced throughout Dman's posts, it is that of overwhelming sadness.  From the Graves mention to the despair Dman described when Adam and Matty neglected to respond to his inquiry about the absence of females from the musicians-turned-actors list, Dman's short time with us may not have been as hope-filled as that of yesterday's "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!".

That said, when I think about this day's very special "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!", I know deep in my heart that he truly is D'man.

How sad for you.

I was really tempted to type the movie version of the lyrics.  In the movie, they moved that song to the daytime, so Natalie Wood's voice double sings:

I feel pretty
And witty
And gay
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me today

Not that calling M. Robert gay would be an insult.  It's more that I wanted to convey that he was narcissistic, not a homosexual.  Yes, there's a difference.

Yeah... we messed with a lot of songs for comedic purposes. It gave us something to do during down time in theater.

At least the ads are targeted to my needs.  In the past hour, I verified my credit score, bought a house in Chicago, signed up for ADT security, scheduled back surgery, lost twenty-five pounds, got rid of some stretch marks, and tracked down a classmate I had a crush on once.  All in all, a good night.

If I have this right:

Madame (as I'll call him/her) is a sandwich board advertiser.  She was out in a strange part of town, trying to get the unwilling masses to Belmont Medical Supply.  She stumbled on an alien egg field, and because she's not really disabled she didn't know how to work her wheel chair.  In her panic and lack of wheelchair know-how she accidentally ran over many alien egg trip wires, eventually getting a facehugger.  She got out of the egg field, and went to her boss to ask him how to remove the facehugger.  He told her that he didn't care how she got it off, but that she better get back out on the streets to sell medical supplies if she wanted to keep her job.

So, she did.  This is a picture of her panicking (naturally - the facehugger), but still trying to earn a buck by barking out Belmont's slogans.

I haven't figured out how the implanted Ouiji board scooter fits into the scenario.

It's been too long (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2896.msg89724#msg89724).  But the wait (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2674.msg94646#msg94646) is finally over...

That's right!  It's time once again for a very special extended edition of "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!":

solafekxela (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?action=profile;u=3943) registered for the forums a little more than a year ago, when he was still just sixteen.  He lurked for about a month before posting anything.  His first post was a brief, thread-derailing inquiry (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=1511.msg31788#msg31788), in all lowercase, about where to download old episodes of the podcast.  winrit and Adam were quick to point solafekxela in the right direction, and he retreated back to the shadows, so desperate to feed his podcast addiction that he couldn't pause to say thanks.

Normally that sort of poster is never heard from again, let alone nominated for "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!" — but solafekxela was no normal poster.  After a two-month absence from the forums — time he presumably spent in the dark corners of a rundown loft, mainlining Cinecrack — our strung-out hero returned here in search of a new high.

It was the summer of 2007, and The Movie Game (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=700.msg35854#msg35854) had been stalled for more than thirty hours.  alexarch and sdedalus were filling the thread with nonsensical banter, but solafekxela's addiction had him in a no-nonsense mood.  He took matters into his own hands and jumped in with a still of his own — a clock tower shot from Back to the Future that alexarch, being gay, identified twenty minutes later.

solafekxela managed three more posts that first day, first kissing up to Adam in a Show Discussion thread (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2242.msg35927#msg35927), then confirming (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=700.msg35928#msg35928) alexarch's Back to the Future guess ("of course"), and finally — and most consequentially — declaring (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=700.msg35943#msg35943) himself an Alex (or, in his lowercase style of the time, an alex).  This tentative assertion sent shockwaves through the forums, with alexarch and Junior dancing madly ("The Dreaded Alex feasts on the eyelids of children and borrows your favorite pens.") and VmSoze crying foul but also looking to use the situation to her advantage.  solafekxela, bewildered, wisely kept his distance from the forums for the rest of that day.

But solafekxela came back the next morning and, from that point, became a consistent presence here.  He went through the usual forum growing pains, trying to figure out (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=700.msg36009#msg36009) how to post an image correctly ("sorry, still havent figured out how to make it bigger," he wrote, providing perfect fodder for pixote's Generic Joke of the Week, had that feature been in existence back then) and figuring out which threads, besides the Movie Game, he should post in.  He focused first on the Top 5 forum and demonstrated his very diverse tastes.  Top 5 Directors: (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=713.msg36050#msg36050) Steven Soderbergh.  Top 5 movies you liked that everybody else hated: (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2206.msg36051#msg36051) Ocean's 12 and The Good German.  Top 5 most visually stunning movies: (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=1269.msg36053#msg36053) The Limey.  Top 5 Character Introductions: (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2057.msg36967#msg36967) Ocean's 11.

At first it seemed as if participating on the forums was helping solafekxela cope with his torturous Filmspotting addiction, especially as he branched out into the No Movie Talk Allowed forum, but it's clear now that his confident tone was only masking his internal demons.  Occasionally this struggle would rise to the surface, and his posts would betray, quite vividly, a mind at war with itself.  Maybe even a cry for help.

The earliest struggle was the seemingly simple matter of finding his voice.  solafekxela started out an all-lowercase, sporadic-punctuation kind of kid, but he couldn't hold on to that.  For his entire first month of posting, he jumped nervously from style to style.  In the morning, his words would be completely bare (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=700.msg36054#msg36054) ("well done"), but by the afternoon he'd be a totally different, orthographic (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2260.msg36178#msg36178) person ("Definitely, but I've come to expect it with Fincher.") — and still other times he'd capitalize a few of the appropriate words, but not all, and punctuate a few of his sentences, but not all.  After four weeks of pained indecision, he generally settled on an orthographically correct style, no doubt trying to blend into the crowd and further the illusion that he was just a normal boy.

Another evident struggle for solafekxela was the smothering love he felt for Sam Van Hallgren.  His desperate hope (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2325.msg37541#msg37541) that there might be a TV movie after Sam's childhood was just the tip of the iceberg.  In another post, you can sense his passion (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2354.msg38846#msg38846) crescendo-ing from sentence to sentence; first he states that he easily prefers Sam over Adam, then adds that he'd like to hang out with Sam, and then goes even further to hope for physical contact:  "Sam is perfectly groomed and it's the kind of hair you just want to touch."  This unrequited love occasionally boiled up in bitterness, as when solafekxela jealously challenged (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2356.msg38512#msg38512) Sam for the title of Steven Soderbergh's number one fan.

When Sam announced he was leaving the podcast, young solafekxela might have been expected to snap, but instead his initial reaction (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2392.msg40007#msg40007) was relatively muted ("Truly a sad occassion. ... You will be very missed..."), and it's as if he thought Sam's departure would let him kick his addiction once and for all.  He made a determined effort to start fresh, not only showing early faith in Matty ("Though I must admit, Matty B's impression at the end of #173 was priceless, whispering tenderly, 'Steven Soderbergh.....Soderbergh' in true Sam fashion."), but also using his 100th post to introduce himself (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=527.msg40027#msg40027) properly to the forums.  He declared that he was finally committed to spending time on the boards and talked sunnily about applying to film school (later linking to his NYU application video (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=1085.msg41447#msg41447)), but then he rather ominously declared that he was "a carnivore" who was "coming out of the woodwork."  Uh oh.

But things were calm for a while.  solafekxela had finally managed to blend in and even grow up a little: now he was the one giving people advice (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=700.msg43388#msg43388) on uploading pictures, for instance.  But then this impressionable kid, now a recovering addict, ran into the post whores.  And a whole new addiction began calling to him.  He tried to resist.  In the Questions and Answers (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=922.msg43864#msg43864) game, with Junior asked, "On a scale from 1-5 including half points, how excellent are my post whoring skills?" solafekxela scoffed, "1 - post whoring takes no skill."  Two weeks later, he was tested again, enticed by an abstract conversation in the Obvious Post Whoring Thread consisting of pure punctuation.  But again solafekxela stayed strong and distanced himself, writing, "You should all be ashamed."

But his mind was still at war with itself, and just a day later, he asked, "When do I get that fourth star below my name?"  Feeling his resolve weakening, he quickly followed up, "I'll take my time. I'm not sure I want to end up like the Alex's before me."  Then immediately after, "I'll never join you!"  His internal battle forced him to adopt a holier than thou pose.  He stopped by the Word Association (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2580.msg47597#msg47597) thread just to comment, "I refuse to participate in this thread. Enjoy, whores!"  Next, he visited the Rhyme Thyme (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=2591.msg47943#msg47943) thread to declare, "The forum gods are lashing their wrath against such activities designed specifically to promote post whoring."

The breaking point came when skjerva asked solafekxela if he had ever really whored.  solafekxela replied (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=779.msg48013#msg48013), "That depends on your definition, but on some occasions, yes. I self whored a while back, and I frequent this particular thread, though I prefer not to make two posts subsequently.  I had planned on a sneak attack, methodically but persistently approaching all of you from behind. However, as I previously stated, my principles got in the way...and I am not ashamed."  This set off a tongue-and-cheek debate about the nature of post whoring, culminating in VmSoze's writing to solafekxela, "I feel so cheap now.  Thanks."  Then, in continuing to defend herself, VmSoze took a dig (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=779.msg48120#msg48120) at the very thing that solafekxela had worked so hard to solidify — his identity:  "but I do take a little offense to what solafekxela (seriously, you need to come up with an easier nickname) said, because I only came up with on PWing thread and only after Junior had already started one... you gotta fight fire with fire, right?"  solafekxela tried to salvage the situation, offering a sputtering apology while also attempting to reassert his identity:

VM - I apologize. That comment wasn't meant to offend you. I hope everyone understands that most of my comments about morals were meant to be very tongue-in-cheek. Of course I see nothing wrong with the threads anyone starts, because we all know there are no rules on this board, and even if there were, they certainly wouldn't be about post whoring. It's a delightful pastime that I respect and in which I sometimes indulge. I just don't like rhyming.

You can call me Alex, by the way.

But, alas, it was too late.  The final downward spiral had begun, and after just four more posts, solafekxela self-distructed.  His last words to the forum were cryptically unsettling.  Apropos of nothing, he asked, "Who can explain free energy?"  And that was it.  He was gone.  Whether he atomized himself, the record does not show.  All we have left of him now are his heart-wrenching 386 posts, along with his profile.

The birthday cake there reminds us that today is — or would have been — solafekxela's eighteenth birthday.  I truly hope that he's out there somewhere, celebrating, finally at peace with himself ... and not, as his avatar suggests, enmeshed in some sinister assassination plot.

So Happy Birthday, solafekxela!  I hope it's a great one, made just a little greater by being named "Basil's Overlooked Filmspotter of the Day!!woot!!"

Note to forum conspiracy theorists:  You've no doubt noticed that solafekxela's Last Active date is almost exactly a half hour before my own registration date on these forums.  Let's not make too much of that, okay?  Any notion that pixote and solafekxela are the same person are totally unfounded.  And frankly just silly.

Which makes me more curious about the one we call Basil, another Alex, who works closely with the one we call Pixote.

Which makes me curious about the one we call Junior.

Are all these personas fragments of me?  Do I suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder?  Everyone knows I'm unhealthily obsessed with my high school and college years.  It makes sense that I would conjure personalities that are 18-25.  But I'm not missing time, a common symptom of MPD.

And what of the one we call alexander?  Is he an unformed, personality-atom?

Or maybe I'm just hungry.

Know your leetspeak. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet)

pixote

From that same wiki:
"Leet originated within bulletin board systems in the 1980s,[1][2] where having "elite" status on a BBS allowed a user access to file folders, games, and special chat rooms, often including archives of pirated software, pornography, or text files documenting topics such as how to construct explosives and manufacture illegal drugs."

How many posts to I have to write before I get into the drugs and explosives? Is there a "Gonzo" stage after "Godfather"?

Out of 4493 members of the forum, 3356 have never made a single post. They just registered, enter their details, and then thought "nah, I actually have nothing to say", and left.

A further 775 have less than 10 posts to their name.

And only a dedicated elite of just 117 Filmspotters have made over 100 posts.

Sitewebdavid runs a career site and promised:

grace01 has a web link for debt consolidation.  Even her signature is Debt Consolidation Loans for Bad Credit

likelyka2010 and simplechristine are cute girls with movie tickets coupons

pr0g4sm and astrid.berman sell Men's sex toys.

gordondavis runs an escort service out of London.

lightX has Timelife coupons and the exact same Avatar as ChancesMoon, who runs a dating website.

AnimeKawaiiBile runs a dating service in Seattle and has the exact same Avatar as confeti, who offers his service as a children's photographer.

AAprotocol may be my favorite.  Besides being "YOur Source For Computer Gaming gamer pc" they actually posted something.

I hope this month there will new launching album,,, I will keep in touch for this.  ;)

EDIT: Wow, the music that this Geocities-izer uses is amazingly perfect. "Blue" "Breakfast at Tiffany's" "I Get Knocked Down" "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" "Ironic" "Candle in the Wind" All MIDI-ized!

Title: Re: meta - Worst Post Ever
Post by: 1SO on November 28, 2010, 11:04:06 AM
There was a trailer for The Gaurdians of Ga-Whoole before Ramona and Beezus, and it's probably the worst trailer ever.

One of those others may or may not be the worst 'film' ever made.

Because Owen Wilson is the worst person to ever walk on the face of the Earth.

It's the absolute worst tag line I've ever read.

Also, "Hey Jude" is probably the worst song that uses lyrics ever written.

That's one of the worst songs ever recorded, it completely demeans the lyrics and is a fine display of everything that is wrong with music.

This film is terrible, horrible actors filling the most generic and over the top romances ever conceived mixed with one of the worst soundtracks of any film ever.

I think Miyazaki is really talented, I just think that he's not some sort of God. I think I wrote in my Ponyo review that he's like the Pixar of Japan, except unlike Pixar he has not produced one of the worst films ever made...

Whilst Wall*E isn't all that special, E.T. is truly one of the worst films I've ever watched.

I haven't seen much Spielberg though, just Jaws, which sucks, Close Encounters, which sucks, E.T., which is one of the worst films ever...

I have confirmed that Fantasia is probably the worst film ever made,

2. Brad Bird (Ratatouille is almost a saving grace, but as Pixar's third best film that hardly makes up for producing two of the worst animated films I've ever witnessed)

Yeah, it could have had one of the best endings, but then the film negated all of that and turned it into one of the worst endings ever;

Toy Story 2 is terrible...and it has Jesse who is the worst character ever.

The fact that on the boards for basically every Van Sant film after Forrester there seems to be at least one thread calling 'insert film here' the worst movie ever. Each board has their individual winners sure, such as the Elephant "People Think They're Supposed To Like This Movie" or the "Van Sant Has Never Had Sex With A Virgin," but it seems like every movie on imdb has at least one thread claiming that it's the worst film ever. Come on.

I stick by all those assertions. Especially E.T. and "Hey Jude." I don't think there is any overlap in those claims either, seems to line up with the Bottom 50 that I have been compiling.

EDIT: I need to find that Guardians trailer too, because it truly is the worst trailer ever made. It has scenes from the film like a real trailer, but then Snyder and his wife come up on screen between shots and literally explain what is going on, before telling you exactly how the film is going to end. That trailer blew my mind.

I saw that "trailer". But I never saw it at the cinema, nor did we get it in any of our trailer packs at work. I saw it online, and it wasn't referred to as a trailer. They called it a featurette.

Legend of The Guardians : The Owls of Ga Hoole - Official Behind The Scenes Featurette [HD] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3JVjMWh4Nw#ws)

I'm surprised that you saw it in front of an actual movie. EDIT: Are you sure you didn't see it in the automated pre-show before the actual presentation started? Because that makes more sense. There are tons of these types of featurettes during pre-show presentations at theatres here.

That is bizarre. It really isn't a trailer. Doesn't even have a ratings band. I am guessing it was part of the pre-show and you are misremembering, or you saw Ramona and Beezus presented digitally and someone accidentally put that video on.

Pre shows are wierd. I don't like them. I like our policy of, nothing happens before the movie begins. Makes it more exciting. Don't need Seifield telling me about some show he's doing.

It can be difficult to judge a conversation, especially one found in a thread related to all things meta. This conversation managed to jump out at me because of it's depth, but also it's odd structure, so emblematic of the way conversation unfold on the Filmspotting Forum. One person after another adds something to the stream of consciousness and without proper context it can all come across as a jumbled blur or meaningless blather. And yet, even amidst all the attempts at poignancy, sarcasm and cleverness rest the heart and soul of it all. Four people, talking about nothing, tangentially related to film, but mostly a form of delightful verbal masturbation (and maybe other forms of masturbation nobody is privy to).

As much as it tries to critique the conversation this review just can't help but fall in line with the rest of the talking. It feels like it wants to be pointing out something insightful or poignant about the lack of insightfullness or poignancy in a conversation that is utterly meaningless but instead it fails and becomes the thing which it so violently tries to rebel against. This is what happens when we stare into the void. Nothing.

The Meta Conversation

I don't know when or why I switched to Letter Grades when rating movies. I actually don't like letter grades. In college I created perfectly workable guidelines for a 5 Star Rating System and I used that system for 15 years. So why am I stuck on Letter Grades now?
You should use my system of not rating. It's pointless.
It probably has something to do with the lack of Asuperplusses in star ratings.
I don't even bother to write reviews most of the time...

B+

As much as it tries to critique the conversation this review just can't help but fall in line with the rest of the talking. It feels like it wants to be pointing out something insightful or poignant about the lack of insightfullness or poignancy in a conversation that is utterly meaningless but instead it fails and becomes the thing which it so violently tries to rebel against. This is what happens when we stare into the void. Nothing.

C-.

And in the critique of criticism we don't merely stare into the void, we jump in, feet first, accepting to all that awaits. What we invariably find is truth, and so it is that we reach the pinnacle of all we need in this world.

Not sure if I receive a notification email for Messages at the moment but I am not receiving any notification emails for the threads that I am following.  This just stopped about 2 or 3 weeks ago.  For a few days I thought everybody went on holiday together and stopped posting so I went to the site directly and found lots of new messages, I just no longer receive any notifications.

Hello everyone,
Sam and I haven't promoted this forum on the show yet, so I'm not expecting much of a response at this point... But we're having trouble coming up with a Top 5 topic for this week. All we can come up with that relates to "Kingdom of Heaven" or "Crash" is Top 5 Epics. Frankly, a lot of the movies that qualify as epics -- Ben Hur, Spartacus, etc... -- Sam and I haven't seen.

Any suggestions? Thanks! -Adam

I'd love to hear how you relax when you aren't cutting down trees and building log cabins. I can't conceive of a Winnipeg day of chillin. Lasso a moose? Ride it till it won't ride no more? No don't tell me it ll spoil the illusion.

I did log 45km on my bike today, riding to get a haircut (saying goodbye to my barber), going to get some fruit&veg, stopping at the liquor store, and checking in on my condo (which I only own for another 7 days). And my bike IS brown (http://i.imgur.com/MLURasX.jpg) like a moose. And our roads, even those designated as bike routes (https://tinyurl.com/n9ta26f), leave something to be desired in terms of smoothness... a moose may be rather less jarring, all things considered. And they're great in the snow! (https://i.imgur.com/DqDLwfq.gifv)

Now I'm just sitting on the shady patio at my friends place, watching the people go by and drinking a beer and eating cherries. That may or may not comprise the remaining hours of this particular saturday. :)

Artistic is a perfectly fine word, IMO.

Titular is a really dumb word, but often a very convenient one.

Bomb is interesting because it's basically completely voluntary slang. Why, Junior, why? ;D

If I were to guess at the rest of that sentence, I'd say it would be about the kind of glee that people say the word with. Like they're reveling in the box office failure of a movie entirely separate from the actual artistic (ahem) quality of the film.

Huh, I was joking but that's actually a good point! Seems obvious now, but I never considered how the term is really only used to describe financial failure.

Is titular dumb because eponymous exists ? Because otherwise I don't see a problem with it, unless you don't like silly sounding words.

hopefully, this catches on.

Reply #1 is Junior's review of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Thoughts come through clear, but you can see how far Junior has come when expressing his opinions.

Reply #2 is a mixed review of Watership Down and Reply #4 is karlwinslow replying with an Avatar from the film.

Oof, that's... not good. Just goes to show you that practice makes perfect. And studying this stuff in school helps, I guess. Even though I've kinda stopped doing big reviews mostly, at least during the school year, I think my current reviews of that length are, like, infinitely better.

I don't honestly know which thread this should go to but here goes. I am seriously starting to freak out at the backlog of posts I need to read and respond to. I have wished there had been some more activity on the forum in the past, but between work and leisure time I am getting way behind in here.

I find it a bit like work.. I can't really keep up so only jump in and out.  On a related subject, today is the first day I have gotten my work email down to All Read in years.  It usually around 500 on the low side to 5000+ on the high side.  Or course, a lot are duplications of conversations but a lot of things also missed.

Great work, jdc!

DarkeningHumour, I've been playing catch up on that music thread since its beginning and everyone is extremely patient with me. You'll get to stuff if and when you do. The threads will keep. :)

I find this pretty comical. You got your paws in every thread!

I don't even have time to watch films. To be precise, 6/13 I watched in May were on an aeroplane.

Do you have to type 'pixote' every time or do you have a shortcut key for it?
32,000+ posts in, do you regret your decision?
Only 25,247 posts are viewable. What are you hiding?

Haha, back in the day, alexarch tried to change it on me, thinking it was it was part of my sig ... but, nah, I type it each time.

32,000+ posts in, do you regret your decision?

Not even a little! Even the moments of panic when I think I might have typed the wrong name are sort of enjoyable.

Only 25,247 posts are viewable. What are you hiding?

Hmm, good question. I show 25,949 myself, with the difference with your number being my posts in a couple moderation sub-boards. The remaining discrepancy must be some glitch with the posts purge of a couple years back.

When you Show Posts in your own profile, do you see a full 29,262?
