Title: The Top Directors Working Today: Darren Aronofsky
Post by: 1SO on May 28, 2008, 10:00:35 AM
Like Terry Gilliam a generation ago, Aronofsky’s a visionary who’s had great difficulty fitting in with the Studio machinery.  Nobody questions his originality, but his level of success is certainly up for debate.  Some think he’s too pretentious to produce a masterpiece.  I think REQUIEM FOR A DREAM already is one, and producing another only requires a high amount of passion and a low amount of studio interference.

I must say, I think both Pi and Requiem are truly outstanding. The Fountain... After only one viewing I'm not sure whether it achieved what it set out to do. I do know that I didn't find it as compelling. It felt quite flat, all the way through. The complete opposite of the thrilling ups and downs of his other films. Not that I wanted The Fountain to be a manic experience, but I needed something more than I got. There are many positive things about The Fountain (the acting, the look) but it's not the complete package.

He should basically continue doing his own thing. He's given us some very intriguing and sometimes very high quality movies, such as Pi and Requiem for a Dream. He may not be Hollywood's favorite director, but he knows what he's doing and usually delivers us good material. What's more is that his movies are often challenging, either visually or morally or both. A winner in my book.

I haven't really made up my mind about him. He tends to make movies I don't want to revisit.

I don't like the choices.

I think his films are really good, but I don't think he is one of the best directors working.  I certainly think he is very talented, and I have yet to dislike any of his films.

I had a little trouble with finding the correct language for this poll.  I don't want just a generic like/dislike poll.  I want to tailor it towards very general feelings about these directors...which of course leaves a lot of gray area in between the choices.  But I like that you simply said "I don't like the choices" kind of like answering "other".

Could you maybe say what you feel are Aronofsky's weaknesses?  I just wonder because you say he's talented and you like his films, but he still falls short of being a great director for you.  Is it that he's still new and hasn't matured into Great filmmaking?

I really like Pi and enjoyed The Fountain enough.  It's still too early to tell with him.

Hit and miss of the two I've seen.  Loved Requiem, hated The Fountain.

Seems like sdedalus may be right, with only 3 features, it's kind of difficult to judge his career.

I think his direction is alot of style and little substance.  He makes good movies for sure, but I wonder how good he would be if you rob him of camera tricks and special effects.  Nothing is wrong with style, but there has to be something more than fancy cinematography to a movie.  Stripped of the camerawork, Requiem for a Dream would be the a pedestrian "drugs are bad" story.

He is aslo suffering from an acute case of pretension.  Not surprising when you are hailed as a genius after two films.  With the Fountain he tried to will a new 2001, or Anrei Rublev, or Seventh Seal into existence, he obviously failed in that regard (though the film is not as bad as some claim).  I wish he would go back to the drawing board and try to create something small and unambitious, you got to create a small masterpiece like Winter Light before you can create an epic like Seventh Seal (unless you are Bergman in which case you dont).

True but with the camera techniques and PHENOMENAL SCORES working in concert with the plot bothe RfaD & Pi are amazing pieces of contemporary cinema.

The Fountain I still consider bastardized as he wasn't able, for many many reasons, to make the film he wanted.  Would have liked to see his Batman but alas that is not to be.

Apparently this topic moved unpopular opinions, but what ever. Went with Great. I must see more of his work.
