Nice. I don't take meds either... My dad pretty much believed (s) that all drugs are bad and that doctors and pharma companies are out to get us! Made for fun family dinners with my uncle and aunt who are hypochondriacs and are careful to only choose to live in apartment buildings that already have a doctor living in them!

timing chain went at 100,700 miles.  It was supposed to be fixed this week whilst I was away for work but "the parts were sent to the wrong place" (felt like a line to me but whatever).  As long as I save a but load of cash on the repair I'm ok with a little extra time, esp singe i'm in Boston Monday then off to Ireland tuesday.  Not like I'll need it.

Hendrix appears to have an exclusive deal with Activision, which means it would be Guitar Hero: Hendrix, which would feature abotu 20 Hendrix songs and the rest from 'friends.' If it's not made by Harmonix, it probably sucks. A Bob Dylan: Rock Band or Demi Lovato: Rock Band would be great though.

Yes, though I don't much care for Hendrix. No one does Dylan like Dylan, not even when it's "All Along the Watchtower"

Also, in Band Centric Guitar Hero games they never put just the featured band, they get like 25 songs from the featured band and the rest are from associated acts. unlike The Beatles: Rock Band, which is 45 Beatles Tracks and forth coming full album Beatles DLC.

Eating. Oral surgery sucks, especially when you wake up at 4AM because of how hungry you are.

The day I had my wisdom teeth removed, and the few days following, were some of the greatest of my life. I recall talking to the lady, going under, waking up, signing something in a haze while no one else was around (a waiver? how smart of them!), having my grand mom drive me to her house, falling asleep, waking up to take my medication, attempting to drink as my numb mouth barely felt the glass touch my lips, water drizzling down my face without regard for my clothes, nay, in defiance of my clothes, eating chicken noodle soup, vomiting about five minutes later (my favorite part), then watching bits of pieces of George Washington as the medication started to take hold, waking up to see the ending and not having any idea what was happening but knowing I missed out on something great (which I returned to a few weeks later only to confirm it's kick assery), taking the meds again and watching Adaptation for the first time (what an experience), and then watching a ton of Disney at home the next few days as I sucked down mashed potatoes and what little soup was able to be eaten, meaning it had no large chunks that needed to be chewed, as I constantly passed out for about 2-4 hours by taking those pills, not the ones that are mostly just Advil except stronger, but the oxycotin or whatever it's called (the extras I still have saved for a rainy day), and I probably played video games as well. Also, I went on the forums a good deal. I wish I could do this at least once a year.

Craving Chick-fil-A.

I understand this and agree but there is still this bizarre idea that has crept into right wing politics that intelligence is not a virtue, rather simple mindedness and ignorance are somehow character traits to be lauded.

This alone is enough to make all right wing political ideology worthy of only scorn.

It's a brand of populism that has proven to be electorally successful at times. Versions of it exist on the left too.

I'm not sure I'd go that far. I believe there is a group of far right thinkers that are very intelligent and saavy, the fiscal conservatives. Unfortunately, the fundamentalists and social conservatives stole the far right from them. Or not stole, but stole the limelight, at least. The problem with many intelligent, fiscal conservatives is that fiscal policy is THE most important thing to them. Things like civil liberties and other social issues are of no interest to them. So, what they believe on any given social issue is a moot point; they're not voting or influencing with that in their head.

I think one of the biggest problems in the U.S. is our two-party system.

imdb tells me that one of Tim Burton's goals is to take the focus off the episodic nature of many other Alice adaptations, and by building prominent central characters that are integral to the story rather than individuals who float in and out of scenes he hopes to weave a more sustained narrative, with which I applaud because I think the aspect that makes the original Disney adaptation so mediocre is the episodic nature. The marketing is playing up the Mad Hatter a bit too much, I agree, but I also don't know what Burton's final vision looks like, so it may be completely justified. He certainly proved that, despite it being called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that he could make a tremendous film focusing on Depp's character rather than the child. Though it may just be Tim's desire to stick with original titles even when they displace a film's central focus. I mean Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a more apt title for that film, but he wanted to hold on to the original title regardless. I'm still hardcore excited to see Alice.

Looking at 7 story building-side posters of Johnny Depp everywhere I drive.  So glad to be back out of LA.  It is Alice in Wonderland right?  I have the name right, don't I?

Basically, the new one has Depp in a big role and Depp is a slightly bigger star then Wasakowski.

Your use of understatement amuses me.

I got RTFM'd (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=5204.msg415680#msg415680) yesterday for asking that !  :)  Glad I wasn't the only one!

Nah yeah you're right.  Your light-hearted finger waggling was deserved.

I've got too many kids, too many jobs, I manage two other forums, and let's face it I'm dull as a pencil eraser.  It's hard to keep track of stuff sometimes!  I'd vaguely remembered seeing that FAQ at one point.  If I had invested a little time in that filmspot thread it would have been obvious.

Ironic thing is I take software support calls by day - so I'm usually the one fielding the stupid questions and saying RTFM!

I'm just gonna try this one for a bit and see whether it fits or not.

I think maybe I'd prefer just Noke (or noke), except people would probably pronounce it in their heads to rhyme with poke, and that's a goddamn shame.

I knew that, but still.  Noke looks like it should rhyme with Poke.

And I just found out that Noke is the ex-Gman.

MOre or less.  Though gman didn't seem to have the vivid personality that noke does, so I wasn't pining away for him or anything.  I think the Nathan Fillion avatar adds a lot.  Or maybe you just got more comfortable and vocal on the boards during my abscence.

Hmmm or maybe I never shut up and you were only ABLE to become more vocal in my absence.  Perhaps I should shut up more and see if Thor or Wowser reappear.

Watching Men Behind The Sun for my WWII marathon. Turns out the version NF offers has the original language option, but no subtitles to go along with it. Sucks too because this one was so controversial I wanted to watch it. Oh well, I'll skip it for now and maybe sometime in the future I'll be able to hunt down a version that has the original language ad English subtitles that actually work.  :(

What's the MDC?
Title: Re: what are you not doing?
Post by: oneaprilday on August 30, 2010, 05:03:49 PM
What's the MDC?
Movie Dictator Club

Each month, Filmspotters who want to participate get to dictate a film to another Filmspotter, who must watch the film and report back. (The dictator is also the dictatee of another Filmspotter.) The dictations are usually themed - September dictations will be musicals, so all the participants will be dictating a musical and watching a musical.

It's a great way to be "forced" to watch a film you might not normally seek out on your own, and it's fun to assign movies you love to other people. You should give it a go. :)

Here's (http://www.filmspotting.net/forum/index.php?board=22.0) the board for the MDC, and here's (http://www.filmspotting.net/forum/index.php?topic=8740.0) the thread for September.

Smoking.  It's been about 44 hours since the last cigarette, which is the longest I've gone in a long time.  I'm using Cig2o (http://www.cig2o.com/home.html) which I'm sure has its own set of health problems, but the plan is to gradually wean off it.  Besides, it's a lot easier to hide from the wife.  No more finding excuses to go out or waiting until she takes a nap.

Of course, it's not exactly like smoking, but it's close enough to take the edge off the cravings.

Strangely enough, an interesting fact I heard on NPR which was conspicuously absent from the AP story today:  the underwriters were buying back the stock in an attempt to keep it above the $38 issue price (just barely, as it only closed at $38.23).  They won't be able to continue doing that on Monday.  I can't wait to see what happens ...

Places pay for blood? I give as often as I can and since I have O+ I can give double or whatever. Somewhere will pay for that?
Title: Re: what are you not doing?
Post by: jdc on December 06, 2012, 09:41:54 AM
I don't think they pay for blood but they do for plasma.  My flatmate in University use to give ever few weeks and would put some extra weights in his pockets as they could take/pay more if you were over 150 pounds.

But if you are looking for funds for donations, doesn't sperm pay the most?

Sperm donation is a complicated and invasive processs involving a lot more than just spanking it into a sample cup. A lot of medical and background history needs to be provided...

That's what I figured, but they've put me through screenings last year when I did some medical study with my blood so I imagine it will be somewhat similar to that but a bit more rigorous. I think you do get paid more if you have highly desirable genes though, which I don't having brown hair and brown eyes and premature balding and what not, so I'm not even sure I'd get all that much since I'm mostly average in all the other categories except for intelligence I guess if they pay more for degrees and stuff.

Standing ESPN. If this stupid Manti thing gets swallowed up by a Harbowl thing (God, please don't let that be the Super Bowl, I wouldn't be able to take it for two weeks on top of what seems to be an unending torrent of pointlessness that is the Manti story) I'm going to be so CINECAST!ing pissed.

EDIT: I'm already sick of this Manti story. It's so CINECAST!ing irrelevant, and it isn't interesting at all. Like college football. I thought that shit was done and I wouldn't have to think about it until the draft. I was braced for a bunch of Chip Kelly talk, I could put up with hearing those same arguments all over the place because it's relevant (even to Houston because now Gus Bradley signed with the Jags, which potentially blows I guess, I just hope the Jags keep sucking as do the Titans and the Colts fall again somehow), but I can't take another minute of this stupid "did he get Catfished?" junk.

It's like they say, keep your friends close but your non-prescription sunglasses closer.

Looking forward (sort of) to trying the 3D thing out without the second layer of distortion.

I had my one day follow-up. Right eye is basically 20/20 but left is lagging slightly at 20/25 or 20/30, but I guess these things fluctuate a bit early on and settle in. Am having haloing around lights at night so hopefully that goes away before too long. Otherwise no problems.

I've been on a business trip these past 2 weeks and I feel bad that I haven't responded to pixote, oldkid, Junior, Wilson and others who have been going through ups and downs beyond the norm. I've been reading, but haven't had much posting time. I've even watched some challenging films - The Marriage of Maria Braun, Jean Renoir's The River - that I probably won't write about because I don't have time to compose my thoughts.

Living apart from my fiance.  For 5 years 2 months and 2 weeks we had a long distance relationship.  He arrived today, for good.  We finally be living together in Colorado.  :)
Hurrah!!! :) :)
An impressively strong relationship to hold out that long as a long distance one. So glad for you that it will now be a short distance relationship.

Working.  Just got rejected for another job I really wanted, one that I really thought I had in the bag too.  Coming up on 6 months unemployed now.  The only offer I've had was a 30-day contract for a rate that was way way too low.  This is so frustrating and discouraging and depressing.

Is the Denver job still in the running?

I actually don't have a Denver job.  My gf is considering a job there, and if she got it and took it, I'd consider moving there too.  I'm certainly not having much luck here.  But at this point it's all just theoretical.  There's a number of other factors that would make it difficult/undesirable for me to move.  Plus, she's starting to think she'd rather not move either.

So, I am dead to you, but you aren't remembering why. That's probably fair. Half the time I don't remember why I hate someone, but that doesn't stop me from hating them. It's my God-given right to hate whoever I want to hate, reasonably or not. Dag burnit.

Eating my left-over tacos. I was putting the finishing touches on them when a large, somehow alive moth started making things move, which I thankfully noticed but kinda soured me on the whole idea. He was probably pretty dormant at first from the refrigeration, but I guess the microwaving woke him up. That must have sucked.

Yep! It was definitely the curry and I've told him so ;D Honestly, I don't know what it was, but I felt lousy this morning. In the past I did suffer from a bit of IBS and spicy, hot foods can set it off, but I haven't suffered from anything IBS related for ages/years.

Anyway I put today to good use, I've watched about 4-5 episodes of The West Wing, The latest episodes of Fargo, The Leftovers and a really good nature documentary about the wildlife, animals and birds that live in Loch Lomond, Scotland.

I'm feeling a lot better now and will be back at work tomorrow :(

Watching Anomolisa or 45 Years, and thus, finalizing my top 10 of 2015, since (as I am noticing from letterboxd) I do not live in NY, LA, or the rest of the non-US western world ... Thanks, once again, Weinstein bros, for your Oscar-bait-screen-maximizing, "roll-out" marketing BS!
Title: Re: what are you not doing?

I'd put Carol in that mix of the big films of the year that aren't possibilities for my 2015 list. I've become more comfortable in having my yearly lists reflect what released in Fargo during the year, not letting the tyranny of NY/LA decide my years. Of course, there's plenty of things (Spotlight) that opened here that I just didn't get around to watching before they vanished from the theatres.
Title: Re: what are you not doing?

Of course, there's plenty of things (Spotlight) that opened here that I just didn't get around to watching before they vanished from the theatres.

Part of the problem here (in the theaters here that show arthouse and foreign stuff) is that the primo Oscar bait takes up space for way too long (e.g., in our location, Room, The Danish Girl), leaving no space for other stuff.  (e.g., Relatively speaking, is Anomalisa really in contention for a best animated feature Oscar?  Is Charlotte Rampling really in contention for a best actress Oscar?)  What bothers me is when big-wigs in the Hollywood industry invariably scoff at and deny that the Oscars are little more than a popularity contest hinging on the most current buzz.  If that's not the case (and considering the general population does not vote for Oscars), then why do so many theatrical release dates for higher quality domestic films tend to get more and more bunched up in late November, December, and January (keeping in mind that Oscar nomination voting takes place between 12/31/2015 and 1/8/2016)?

The same crap happened in 2013, when my favorite film (Her) was the last to be released (1/8 here).
