A May Not Be Safe for Work Warning. For the most part this clip is okay. Nothing you wouldn't see outside of a Mike Myers movie. But there is one shot of TOO FAR! involving a young girl's panties and a laughable torrent of movie blood.

I always found the love of cats a bit funny but enjoyable.  I guess that goes for any pets but it was funny to work there and have a coworker that had framed pictures of her cat on her desk all the time.  I don't quite understand it but it does make me smile...

Local reports I have read here from Singaporeans that were in Japan all point to how well composed everybody has been.  People exit buildings in an orderly fashion, there is no pushing.  Stores and gas stations to not raise prices and everybody waits their turn even as goods are running out.

Nutty, perhaps.. but then everybody should be so nutts...

From:  http://kirksigmon.com/2011/03/japan-being-orderly-even-in-face-of-sendai-earthquake/ (http://kirksigmon.com/2011/03/japan-being-orderly-even-in-face-of-sendai-earthquake/)

<i>f there ever was a good example of how well Japanese people can behave themselves, this is it: the Japanese public’s reaction to the earthquake/tsunami issues hitting all over Japan has not been panic, but rather “orderly line”s and patient helpfulness.</i>

<i>The question must be asked: what could America do to elicit this kind of behavior? Unfortunately, this sort of orderliness may be distinctly Japanese — Japanese society benefits from a strong social prohibition on antisocial behavior that has developed from their cultural history, which today has an incredible deterrent effect on criminal or even self-interested behavior. To create such an environment in behavior in modern America would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, as the American emphasis on individual freedom and rational-actor-esque self-interest would discourage such behavior in most circumstances. Nonetheless, one can only hope we learn from the Japanese model over time.</i>

Police track down owners of money in safes recovered from disaster area

Most of the money from safes found in tsunami wreckage and delivered to police has been returned to its owners, police say.

According to the National Police Agency and other sources, as of July 10 around 5,700 safes had been found and delivered to police across the three prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima. A total of around 2.37 billion yen was inside, and about 2.27 billion yen, or 96 percent, of that money has already been returned to the original owners.

Police stations that received the safes had them opened by professionals. Using account books, forms and personal seals found within as clues, police then searched for the owners. There were many cases where police had to contact municipal governments and evacuation shelters to track down where the owners had evacuated to, sources say.

Counting money found outside of safes, such as money from discovered wallets and purses, police in the three prefectures had received a total of around 3.7 billion yen, with about 3.14 billion yen, or 85 percent, having been returned to the owners.

"There are clues to the owners for much of the money that has yet to be returned, and we will continue investigating," said a senior police official.
This country, it's pretty great.

I never waited so long for a beer as I did at Kirin City beer pub.  They make each one with the exact amount of head.  Each one seems to take 5 to 10 minutes to pour:

Ok, this may violate the "super happy fun" part of this thread:

I saw this in the Bangkok paper yesterday on my way home, tried to Snope it or other source to find out if it is fake but nothing:

http://web.orange.co.uk/article/quirkies/Chef_serves_his_own_meat_and_two_veg

A Tokyo man cooked and served his own privates to five diners at a bizarre banquet in Japan.

Mao Sugiyama, 22, who recently underwent elective genital-removal surgery, advertised the meal on Twitter.

He originally tweeted: "Please RT. I am offering my male genitals as a meal for 100,000 yen.

"Will prepare and cook as the buyer requests, at his chosen location."

Sugiyama, who describes himself as 'asexual', prepared the meal with button mushrooms and parsley and served it to five people.

Six people had signed up for the feast but only five of them turned up to eat, although dozens more turned up on the night.

The extra diners were offered crocodile-based dishes while Sugiyama cooked up the exclusive meal, reports Calorie Lab.

Well, didn't find any robot girls in Shinjuku last night but stumbled upon something even more disturbing.  Was sitting in a bar called KirinCity: http://www.kirincity.co.jp/

They are very particular about preparing their beers, usually they take at least 4 minutes to pour each one always getting just the correct (in their mind) of head on the glass.

So looking through the menu they had a new item...TOMATO BEER....

I couldn't find it from Kirin's website, but it seems Asahi has it in a can:

lol.  The low birthrate is a very touchy subject now.  The government has been actively growing the population by immigration, mostly from the China mainland but now there is a growing backlash among a lot of the populist.  Both blaming the gov't for the huge population growth as well as favoring policies that make it difficult for the average citizen to be able to support and afford children.

This kind of bahavior is being recorded all the time:

Plain nutty - or a great deal more sensible.

"Backwash: I tried a Japanese wonder toilet. Americans need to drastically rethink the way we clean our butts." (http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/technology/2014/04/toto_washlet_s350e_the_incredible_japanese_wonder_toilet_that_will_change.single.html) :

"What lies behind our general discomfort with moist butt-cleaning? Do we feel that dry toilet paper is properly penitent—a fair punishment for our nasty, corporeal doings? Is it that we’re embarrassed to devote special attention to this part of our bodies? That we feel it’s weird or deviant to expend additional time, or money, or effort tending to our backsides?"

If you bought 900$ worth of toilet paper today it would probably last you until we reached three-seashells technology.

Not to mention inflation. In 1990 12 rolls of Charmain would've cost you $3.50 (source (http://www.gti.net/mocolib1/prices/1990.html)). Nowaways you'll pay $12.00 (source (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Charmin-Ultra-Soft-Toilet-Paper-Mega-Rolls-12-count/11045831)). That's roughly a 3.5 times price increase over 20 years. At that rate you'll pay about 40$ for a dozen rolls in 20 years.

At todays price (~1$/roll) you can buy 900 rolls for $900. For arguments sake lets say that's a 20 year supply. If instead of buying a 20 year supply today you decided (like a normal person) to buy, say, a one year supply every year for 20 years, you would end up spending around $2000 on tp over those same 20 years, beginning at year 1 ($45.00 for a years supply) and finishing at year 20 (~$150.00 for a years supply).

I think you can conclude with some degree of certainty that on a dollar to dollar basis you are better off spending 900$ right now on toilet paper. What do you do with the $900 worth of tp in the meantime? I dunno... line your basement walls with it for added insulation, thus further increasing the cost benefits of buying now.

Just make sure you buy a brand you like. 20 years is a long time to wipe your but with unpleasant tp.

What discount rate are you using? Are you charging rents for the space this TP will take up? Accounting for any depreciation due to humidity or risk of flood or fire?

This American Life Podcast recently had an episode called Human Spectacle where they did a story on a Japanese Reality show:

Producer Stephanie Foo speaks to Nasubi, a Japanese comedian who, in the 90s, just wanted a little bit of fame. So he was thrilled when he won an opportunity to have his own segment on a Japanese reality TV show. Until he found out the premise: he had to sit in an empty apartment with no food, clothes or contact with the outside world, enter sweepstakes from magazines… and hope that he won enough sustenance to survive. — Stephanie Foo

This not super happy fun... but pretty crazy and disturbing.  When you read the brief discription above, realize it was weeks before he won anything and spent months and months being filmed in captivity.. only to finally win enough to get released only to be taken to another location in Korea to have the whole ordeal start again.. all being filmed and broadcast without his knowledge.

My mind it still trying to process this...

A private line, they say, eliminates electrical interference that comes from sharing a public pole with neighbors whose gadgets can create “noise” that make subtle notes inaudible and the overall sound flatter.

Once one has a personal tower of power, “the music melts into the air of the room,” says Sumio Shimamoto, president of Izumi Denki Corp., which installed Morita’s pole and has erected about 40 more across Japan over the past decade.

Sitting in front of stuffed animals makes me want to go to Japan alone.

Which brings me to the first question that popped into my head when I saw this thread: Have any of you been to Japan? I'm not really a world traveler, but it's on my shortlist of places I want to visit (along with Iceland, New Zealand, and Antarctica). Would love to hear anyone's experiences.

When I was there for extended work, I didn't take advantage and go outside of Tokyo very often. I usually spent my day in the office and found someplace for dinner and a drink in Shinjuku after work. I usually spent a lot of the weekends just walking through various districts. Harajuku is certainly a place you want to go just to people watch. Shibuya has a lot of streets and alleys with lots of interesting stores as well as you can go over to Yoyogi park where there are a lot of street musicians.

I tend to like to find bars or clubs with live music when I travel, usually, jazz but also rock or pop is ok. Tokyo had lots of it so just had to take the chance to go in and try to talk to people which can sometimes be an issue, even with the bartender.

Most of my trips outside Tokyo were usually just an overnight trip to visit hot springs.  Kyoto is beautiful but probably not great for pop culture.  I never made it up north but friends are planning to go in December to Ski so may get my chance.

If you make it to an Onsen though you can not be shy.

Title: Re: The Japanese are plain nutty (super happy fun thread)

An Onsen is a Japanese hot spring or bath facility. Sometimes it could be small and part of a private inn. Or it could also be a large facility with multiple purposes inside:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onsen

I got invited to one just outside Tokyo once by a female friend and didn't really know what to expect. We signed in, were given a wrist band to wear and then went to our locker rooms to change into Yukatas.  When we met on the other side, you are free to walk around to restaurants or get a drink or message, etc. Everybody is where Yukatas. Then we went for the hot spring, which I thought we would do together. She then explained there is a men's side and women's side and we don't go together. Also, there are no clothes allowed into the Hot spring area. When I got invited to the Hotspring by a girl, I didn't think I would be walking around naked with about 100 other Japanese men. I don't know many guys in the US that all go for a steam together, let alone naked. It is normal in Japan as well as sometimes in other countries when you go to a Spa.

They also frown upon heavily tattooed people.
