Title: My Celebrity Encounters
Post by: saltine on November 01, 2009, 01:19:37 AM
Here are a few of my celebrity encounters:

1. I rode in an elevator with Cary Grant, in my youth, not his.

2. I saw Kristen Dunst at LAX a couple of two years ago.  She looked fabulous.

3. A couple of years ago I sat in an airport lounge with Ian McEwan and a woman, I suppose, his wife. She talked on her cell phone while he cruised the refreshment bar and drank.

4. I ate dinner at the table next to Tommy Lee Jones in a restaurant in Midland TX.  He had the enchiladas, good choice.

5. I smoked weed backstage with Willie Nelson, in my youth, not his.

What about yours?

Wow. I am really impressed with this. Truly.

I saw Janet Reno walking around on my campus once. And my parents told me as a family we met Tom Brokaw which I was too young to remember.

Really the closest anyone in family got to a celebrity was when my sister ate popcorn while James Purefoy and Tom Hollander (she says) stared at her from across the room while seeing a play directed by Cate Blanchett's husband.

lol. Not quite true but close.

1) I sat next to Flavour Flav on a plane.

2) I have met many of the famous poker players (Phil Ivey, Daniel Negraneu etc)

3) I played poker with Jerome Iginla

4) I had dinner next to Bruce Springsteen (my brother has an awesome story about this trip. Springsteen was in town for a concert and staying at the hotel where my brother was executive chef. One of his waitresses comes in and says some homeless looking guy just ordered and $300 bottle of wine and can he clear it before she gives it to him. She points him out and its Springteen, of course!)

I sat next to Justin Timberlake at lunch at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

I saw Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston filming a scene for The Break Up

I saw John Cusack riding his bike on the lakefront in Chicago.

My mom was an extra in Lost in Yonkers, so we went down to the set where I got to meet Richard Dreyfuss, Mercedes Ruehl, and David Strathairn (who is extremely tiny in person).

This would be the only logical way for the story to continue. Maybe even telling him to "make it so."

Some years ago before he was even famous.  I met and chatted with Deerhunter's Bradford Cox at my old record store hangout.

At the 2004 Atlanta Film Festival where I worked as a volunteer.  I chatted with Ondi Timoner of Dig! and Shane Carruth of Primer.  A year later at a free screening, I talked a bit with Jesse Bradford and got his autograph.

Wait, I almost forgot.  Back in 2003, I chatted with the musician Entrance at a Yeah Yeah Yeahs concert just before the band was to play while I had Brian Chase walk past me.  Last August while I was waiting in line to see Bat for Lashes, Natasha Khan and live guitarist Charlotte Hatherley walked just beside me while I was waiting in line.  That was cool.

I worked as a server at Planet Hollywood in Chicago - among my guests:

George Clooney
Noah Wyle
Julianna Margulis
Bruce Willis
Sly Stallone
Soleil Moon Fry (after the reduction)
The Jerky Boys
Tony Todd (Candyman)
Tom Arnold
Chris Farley (days before his OD)
Chris O'Donnel
Charlie Sheen (and all of his hookers)

For those of you familiar with house music of the late 80's and early 90's - I once escorted Lonny Gordon through the Chicago club scene for an evening.
Also I would often find myself chatting with Dennis Rodman on occasion as we frequented the same clubs and knew a lot of the same people.

1. I've "met"/briefly spoken to Neil Gaiman at several book signings.  I also went to a signing by Harlan Ellison, and several other authors.

2. I've met and emailed with Suzanne Brockmann enough that she remembers me from signing to signing.

3. I knew science fiction writer John Scalzi from hanging around the same group on the internet, long before he became famous either for his writing or for taping bacon to his cat.

In most of the random celebrity sightings/interactions I didn't know who it was til after the fact.  Such as:

1. When I worked at Waldenbooks in 1990 or 1991 or so I happened to be working on "black Friday" and since it was in Lenox Mall and had a heavily gay clientele, we had instantly sold out of a big Marilyn Monroe coffee table book and I'd been telling fey men all morning that we were out but I could order it.  Yet another tiny gay guy with bad hair asked about it, I told him the spiel and he said he'd check back and walked away.  I later found out it was Elton John and he'd bought about $2000 worth of other stuff.

2. I talked Kathy Bates into a Waldenbooks discount card ("you are buying over $100 worth of books, it's already paid for by the discount you'll get today PLUS you'll get a $5.00 coupon in the mail in a week!").  She was buying a pile of gardening books.  She was already gone from the store when I looked at the paperwork she'd filled out and recognized the name.  Didn't recognize her at all but her hair was short and I only knew her from Misery at that point.  (It was while they were filming Fried Green Tomatoes)

3. I was at a lesbian bar on the dance floor and someone bumped into me.  I put my arm out to catch my balance and accidentally touched a woman's arm nearby.  I did a double take because the arm (biceps) felt like carved wood.  She was glaring at me.  It was a scary glare and I was embarrassed and scurried off the dance floor soon after.  That was when my friends told me it was Martina Navratilova.

4. I saw Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Kevn Kinney (Drivin and Cryin) stitting at a table at the Emory student center.  I did recognize them but didn't approach.  Peter Buck's mom supposedly worked in the administration at the Law School, I figured that might be why they were there.

5.  I've seen Emily and Amy from Indigo Girls all over the place, at restaurants and record stores and little funky clothing stores.  Again, never approached.  Too afraid of saying something stupid or annoying them.  I have friends who are actually friends with them.

Outside of fighters, who I don't consider celebrities, and seeing Jeremy Roenick at my little league opening day when I was like 12, I've never had a run-in with any celebs that I can recall.

Wait, strike that, I took a youth coaching class, it's mandatory that you get certified to coach, with a local news anchor. I can't remember his name, a quick search tells me it was Randy Salerno, I think he was on WGN, but he died shortly after I met him.

This is already on the 5 Fascinating Things thread, so I apologize for repeating myself, but it is my favorite story of all time.

I went to the same high school as Ron Livingston. It's a small high school in a non-descript town and he comes around for the holidays every year or two. I was cheerleading at a basketball game, and my parents, brother, and boyfriend were in the stands waving their arms to get my attention. They were sitting right behind Ron Livingston. During half-time I went up to sit with them, and he was leaning forward. We saw his butt crack and boxers. Later, during the game, I was flying in a stunt  (on top of the fabled pyramid) and we made eye contact and he smiled at me. I just about fainted.

The weird thing is, no one in the crowd even acted like they noticed him. I never saw anyone ask for an autograph or even try to talk to him. I still wish I would have said something to him, but that's probably both lame and rude.

This is the only one I have:

My family went to a Yankees game in 1998 and we got there early and were walking around the stadium. Then we came to the player entrance and a cop stopped us and told us to stand there while the players walked by. We turned to look and saw barricades holding throws of fans back and then turned the other way and saw none other than Derek Jeter himself walking right in front of us. And by right in front of us I mean like 3-5 feet maybe. At that point the cop had stopped paying attention to us and we could have gone up to him if we wanted to (though we would have been been run up to by the cops then I'm sure). Jeter was walking in with another player too, but we didn't know who he was. We turned to my oldest brother, who knew everything baseball then, and he said it was Jorge Posada. He turned out to be a pretty good player too.

I've met various musicians after concerts and met a whole bunch of people at MaxFunCon but those don't really count since they're expected.  My biggest incidental celebrity encounter occurred a few times.  Growing up, my house was a few blocks away from the headquarters of Newman/Haas Racing and over the years I saw Paul Newman a few times.  Unfortunately I never did get to actually meet him.  I've also seen Little Richard riding in a limo in Hollywood - he actually pulled over to sign autographs for people and I got to see his horrifying plastic face.  I also ran into comedians Doug Benson and Brian Posehn on the street in Chicago.

This is a fun topic. Personally, I get so much more excited about seeing someone well-known, but not necessarily famous, who inspires or impresses me on an artistic or personal basis. Way more so than a chance encounter with Paris Hilton, Brangelina, or Tom Hanks (all of which have happened, but left little impression on me).

Just being in the same room as Steven Soderbergh was awesome for obvious reasons, same with meeting Paul Greengrass and Michael Mann. And a couple of crazy nights with John C Reilly and Diego Luna were cool as well.

My uncle has one of my favorite celeb stories though for sure, during which he spent about an hour talking to a guy at a bar before being told it was Billy Joel, this long after the man had reached stardom.

I've met Lorne Cardinal from Corner Gas several times.
I've shaken the hands of both Rian Johnson and Hillary Clinton.
This year I met Matty Robinson ;) and Jay Baruschel at TIFF.
The coolest famous person I've had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with has to be Romeo Dallaire. Such a uniquely incredible individual, and genuinely nice person. I'm not sure anyone I could ever meet in my life would top my meeting with Dallaire.

Like I said - he was very cool to me and I was very impressed by the fact that he even introduced his friends to me when he said hello - not that he needed to - it was Ahmad and Phylicia Rashad. I have never been much impressed by sports figues but he was quite down to earth while Scotty Pippin on the other hand...

Yeah, I spoke to him at TIFF. He sat in front of me and Sam C. Mac at the screening of The Informant! He was very cool. Seemed to share my opinion on Up in the Air, and off the top of his head he claimed A Serious Man as the best film at the festival. I also met Peter Sciretta from Slashfilm.

Also, who is Michael Phillips?  Because at first when I read the name and you said he was really tall, I was thinking about the swimmer dude, and was being impressed that he had interesting film opinions because he seems like kind of a lunkhead, but then I remembered that's Michael Phelps....and realized I don't know who Michael Phillips is.  At least not off the top of my head.

Got word that my one friend saw Kanye West walking out of an elevator yesterday in some NYC building or something. I'm not sure if he was being real, but if so I am jealous. I still have not had any prime celeb encounters.

Back when I was a DJ in college, I met LSD guru Timothy Leary, musicians Joe Strummer and Mick Jones from The Clash, Ray & Dave Davies from The Kinks, The B-52's, Joe Jackson, Peter Wolf of the J. Geils band, Marshall Crenshaw (douchebag!!!) and Southside Johnny.

When I worked at Foxwoods, I met Steve Howe, Bill Bruford (both from Yes), Carl Palmer (of ELP) and John Wetton (Asia), Robert Klein, Richard Belzer (The world's most successful non-funny comedian), most of the male cast of The Sopranos, John Mellencamp, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, plus many others who escape me at this moment.

When I worked in Newport, they were filming Amistad, and most of the cast were staying at our hotel. I met Steven Spielberg when he and Kate Capshaw came down to the restaurant to order some food to take back to their room for their kids because Room Service was swamped that night. For cast members, I met Pete Postlethwaite, Nigel Hawthorne, Matthew McConaughey (I was taller than him and I'm 5' 7"), David Paymer (Real nice guy), and Stellan Skarsgård.

Hey, now I can say I kind of know somebody who knows somebody!

My story isn't nearly as grand, but it's an elevator story.

I got to ride in an elevator with Prince in NYC. When he walked in, I think my eyebrows shot up and it made me smile, but I quickly broke eye contact as to not bother him.

5'10" maybe closer to 6'? Haven't been measured in a while. I wasn't on elevated ground or anything, there's no way he is 6'4". He was barely taller than me and I'm no where close to that tall.

I'm pretty sure he's that tall.  He played tight end at the University of Washington, you've gotta be tall for that.  The whole internet agrees on his height as well.  Chevy Chase is about the same height, and he's 6' 3-4".

When "The Fridge" William Perry first started to play with the Bears, he bought a house on the same street as my brother in Libertyville.  It was just an average house at the time and you would often see him washing his cars and mowing the lawn.

I use to work at Browns Chicken and I took the order of the famous players at the time but I can't remember who.  Maybe samurai mike Singletary but just can't remember now.  the owner was very excited and said I should ask for his autograph but I just said not interested.  I can't remember if the player was offended or not, I just didn't excitement of the autograph.

Hillary Swank once sat behind me at breakfast at a cafe/dinner in LA.

I saw Randy "The Macho Man" Savage walk by me in the Miami Airport.  The dude was huge Ohhhh YEAHHHHH..

In 1998 I went on a few dates with a girl that use to date Andrew McCarthy.   She was sitting next to my on my a flight the first time I was sent to Singapore for a project.  I was a bit intimidated by her as she was young, successful, traveling all around Europe, Africa and Asia working for the discover channel.  And I was still a bit shy and awkward in those days

Zac Efron

That's the best one.

Story behind that was I coming home from college in Boston and my Dad picked me up at Penn Station in NYC. We were driving past the Ed Sullivan Theater and Efron was on Letterman. They had finished taping and he walked out a side door to avoid the crowds (which there still was quite a few people). So I'm sitting in traffic and Efron's car (he's in the back) is next to mine with the window down for about twenty minutes until they made a right.

Most of the famous people I've met are boring politicians from the '90s. Highlights: shaking hands with Bill Clinton once during each of his two campaigns (I was a volunteer motorcade driver during his campaign trip to Phoenix in 1996; I had his press secretary and personal physician in my van -- I bet they both had some good stories, but I didn't ask), and having cocktails with Janet Napolitano (before she embarked on her political career).

As you might expect, Phoenix, Arizona, is not exactly a hotbed of Hollywood celebrity sightings. We saw Tom Hanks at a Morton's once. That's all I got. But I'm not exactly vigilant when it comes to celeb-spotting.

However, in college I attended a master class led by David Raksin (look him up) and once tussled over the playlist at a party with Barry Bonds. (When I tell this story to friends, I make it sound like I and the future single-season homerun king actually came to blows; it was actually more of an amusing misunderstanding.)

I met former Gov. Richardson (NM) at an Obama campaign event that I worked. During campaigns it is actually quite easy to meet most politicians at most levels except probably President. And if you are Iowan, it is really more of an accomplishment not to meet the future President.

Had my picture taken with Sasha Cohen (the figure skater)...other figure skaters too but that is less significant.

Had former CU Buff (Butkus Award winning LB and National Champion) and former Broncos DL (two time Super Bowl champion) Alfred Williams at my house. I was across the street at a friend's house though and my mom didn't think to call to have me come back home. One of the worst moments of my life obviously. #yearsoftherapy

Oh, I forgot: I ran into Curt Schilling on the 4 train coming back from Yankee Stadium (yes, apparently Curt Schilling liked to take public transportation; he was with two other, less-famous, members of the Diamondbacks pitching staff). This would've been in 2002, during an interleague series between Arizona and New York (the season following Arizona's defeat of the Yankees in the World Series). Yes, I was in town for that series partially to gloat.

Tonight I attended the premiere of Inside Out at the Hollywood El Capitan Theater. The funniest celebrity story is that my wife approached Patton Oswalt in a store before the event. He was very dismissive, but later when they accidentally ran into each other in the VIP area, he was apologetic. Celebrities act differently when they realize you might be someone important.

They also act differently depending on if they want to be noticed or not. Johnny Knoxville (who shared our table) and Mario Lopez were all about waving to the crowd and being seen (though not actually approaching the fans.) Meanwhile, Billy Crystal tried hard not to be recognized and Minnie Driver ignored their existence completely.

There were a lot of Pixar animators at the event, though the only core member I saw (and shook hands with) was director Pete Docter. In the theater, I sat alongside Jeff Garland who was next to Richard Kind. Rashida Jones and Bill Hader recognized me - I seem to work on one of their shows every 3 years - so that was cool.

I know a few girls who roll hard like she does.
They collect, game and fetishize as intensely as any guy. If anything, I think she found a very unique niche and made it into her calling.
She's really created a nice community around G&S.
I guess it could be a Colbert like role but from everything I've read about her, she seems genuine.
But I am not an insider and I just go by what I see online from her various social media accounts and  other appearances and articles...

Odenkirk again. Invited our dog to play with his dog in their yard whenever we'd like. Think I'll have to take him up on that.

Haven't run into him again since then, but it's on our usual route. Fingers crossed. Ha.

Also, Alfie Allen at the neighborhood cafe and Fred Durst at the corner store.

Made me wonder what it's like to be famous for a band that's pretty much universally despised and a punchline for how lame American music was in the late 90's. Then I realized he's super, super rich and probably doesn't care at all.

Shane Carruth and Amy Seimetz at a cafe. First time I really wanted to bug a celebrity and say hello.

I've never put Alice Cooper and Arizona together in my mind before.  Add in Marty  ... hell of an image!

He makes Phoenix his home. Pretty sure he's from here.
He has a restaurant down by Chase Field.

So Phoenix is where old rockers go to die?  Cool!

He grew up here. There are references to Phoenix-area high schools in a song on the "School's Out" album.

I went down for a late lunch to Jo's diner on 2nd Street last week after the SXSW crowds died down (having a bad day at work, needing some good karma), and in front of me in line were Josh Homme and Dean Fertita (QOTSA).  (It's a little strange standing right next to two people you've seen perform live in some large venue at some point in your life.)  Nobody else was there so when they were done ordering a couple of teas, my impulsive instinct took over I asked if I could get their check ("I'm a fan" is all I said).  They seemed surprised, made a joke, shook my hand, and said thanks; but I was still wondering whether it was a jerk move - I'm sure they just want to be left alone.

How can getting someone else's check ever be considered a jerk move?

Worked two days with an actor named Daniel Cudmore, a giant of a man and real cool too. Very off-the-cuff funny. At the end, he asked for a sharpie so he could sign a DVD for the director. The DVD was X-Men 2 and he signed it Colossus.

Nice! Best X-Men movie by far. He has a great moment in it too.

Shiri Appleby at the farmers market. Just watched the latest episode of UnREAL last night and she really looked like she just stepped right out of the show. Ha.

Is that the actual guy or is it André Sorkin who works as an accountant for Paramount?

This thread reminds me last year I sat three seats away from Costa-Gavras in a small theater (the film was Alphaville). That was neat.

I once saw Fanny Ardant in the flesh as she accepted a directing prize for someone at a festival. She looked great.

Emily Ratajkowski at the market downtown.

And speaking of parking spaces. The place I'm currently working has reserved spots for:

PT Anderson
S Spielberg
K Bigelow
R Linklater

Plus some others I'm forgetting. So close and yet so far.

Not my own encounter but apparently my youngest brother is good friends with Kodi Smit-McPhee and his girlfriend and they chat pretty regularly. Apparently he walked in to the shop where my brother works and they just hit it off.  ;D
