Title: Music Buzz
Post by: Kevin Shields on November 09, 2009, 12:55:56 PM
I figured since there's already a TV and film buzz.  Why not have one for music since I searched and there wasn't really one.  And here's some big news...

Steven Tyler has Quit Aerosmith says Joe Perry (http://www.nme.com/news/aerosmith/48286)

Like hell.

Well, what I've heard recently is that Aerosmith is going on a hiatus as Steven Tyler is going to do some solo work.

I like Aerosmith though I will concede to the fact that they have been a bland band since Get A Grip despite some good singles.

Aerosmith had an interesting debut album, and followed it with three terrifically strong albums in the early 70s. They coasted through the latter part of that decade on weaker albums with a few very good songs each. When Joe Perry left at the turn of the decade, they completely went to shit. That's what they've been since, notwithstanding his return only a couple of years later. Personally, I blame drugs. Or rather, the lack thereof.

Im interested to see what Noel does. Reports from the last album were that he wanted, sonically speaking, to push the boat out a bit but Liam wouldnt have it, preferring to stick to good ol' meat x potato to the power of gravy plod rock.

That said, im not expecting Stockhausen.

Demi Lovato attempts to make music that is more "radio-friendly." (http://www.gossipcenter.com/demi-lovato/demi-lovatos-radio-friendly-future-plans-398844)

Poor Demi  :'(  :'(  :'(

Someone needs to tell her that the radio is dead. Also, she made such strides on her last album and had developed such a unique sound that perfectly blended pop with rock in a stunningly refined style. As long as Demi continues to write her own music I have full confidence in her to deliver another fantastic record, I just hope she does not completely give up her old sound simply to sell more copies. It will be interesting to see how everything goes because she is a fantastic singer, and she said this move is meant to help her showcase her range. It's all about the writing, keep writing Demi!

We have threads for random movie, TV, and sports thoughts, but not music. So, I’ll use this.

Quote from: From A.V. Club
I would listen to “California Gurls” every time I needed a quick pick-me-up, which was fairly often. I could claim I only enjoy the song ironically, but that’s just not the case. I genuinely love that song, however ephemeral or silly it might be.
Finally, some backup. Although I've never claimed ironic appreciation, I keep it real that way.  8)

Tracklisting for the "final" R.E.M. hits package:

Disc 1:
01 “Gardening at Night” (Chronic Town)
02 “Radio Free Europe” (Murmur)
03 “Talk About the Passion” (Murmur)
04 “Sitting Still” (Murmur)
05 “So. Central Rain” (Reckoning)
06 “(Don’t Go Back to) Rockville” (Reckoning)
07 “Driver 8″ (Fables of the Reconstruction)
08 “Life and How to Live It” (Fables of the Reconstruction)
09 “Begin the Begin” (Life's Rich Pagent)
10 “Fall on Me” (Life's Rich Pagent)
11 “Finest Worksong” (Document)
12 “It’s the End of the World as We Know it (and I Feel Fine)” (Document)
13 “The One I Love” (Document)
14 “Stand” (Green)
15 “Pop Song 89″ (Green)
16 “Get Up” (Green)
17 “Orange Crush” (Green)
18 “Losing My Religion” (Out of Time)
19 “Country Feedback” (Out of Time)
20 “Shiny Happy People” (Out of Time)

Disc 2:
01 “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite” (Automatic for the People)
02 “Everybody Hurts” (Automatic for the People)
03 “Man on the Moon” (Automatic for the People)
04 “Nightswimming” (Automatic for the People)
05 “Whats the Frequency, Kenneth?” (Monster)
06 “New Test Leper” (New Adventures in Hi-Fi)
07 “Electrolite” (New Adventures in Hi-Fi)
08 “At My Most Beautiful” (Up)
09 “The Great Beyond” (Man on the Moon Soundtrack)
10 “Imitation of Life” (Reveal)
11 “Bad Day” (In Time)
12 “Leaving New York” (Around the Sun)
13 “Living Well Is the Best Revenge” (Accelerate)
14 “Supernatural Superserious” (Accelerate)
15 “Überlin” (Collapse into Now)
16 “Oh My Heart” (Collapse into Now)
17 “Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter” (Collapse into Now)
18 “A Month of Saturdays” (New Song)
19 “We All Go Back to Where We Belong” (New Song)
20 “Hallelujah” (New Song)

Green gets 4?  And the later output kinda gets represented stragely (E-Bow, All the Way to Reno, Daysleeper)? Better off picking up the 4 discs of And I Feel Fine and In Time.

As for Green, "Get Up" shouldn't be there. It was a single but it hardly charted and it's pretty annoying. "Stand" is annoying too, but it was a hit so it makes sense.

Lack of "E-Bow" is strange, it's a good song and I remember the video getting a lot of play.

I'd swapout "Sidewinder" for "Drive", "Drive" is a better song and it was a bigger hit.

They went with the two Reckoning singles, but "Harborcoat" and "7 Chinese Bros" are the better songs.

There was always this push by critics to canonize "At My Most Beautiful" (we get it, Buck and Mills like Pet Sounds) so its inclusion is no surprise, but I always preferred "Daysleeper" and "Lotus" as far as the Up singles go.

Not that any of this matters.  :)

LDR on SNL: calculated conceptual performance or internet sensation can’t make the transition to legitimate recording artist big leagues? I’m in inclined to think it’s the latter, but in support of the first option, something about the SNL performance is consistent with the dead-eyed, puffy lip, porn star-via-American Appeal vibe she has going in the “Video Games” video.

¡K!, you must have thoughts.

After the SNL appearance, I'm starting to think Lana Del Ray represents a huge problem in the modern music scene, through no fault of her own. Hopefully this is a precautionary tale of the hype machine going out of control. Realistically, this could get much worse.

Also, this performance is still really good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOP2Yd_jpYQ. I wonder what that says about anything.

For me, she doesn't represent any problem with music. Hype, marketing, and persona construction have always existing in pop music, it’s what moves units. And if she disappears, and really was all hype, her legacy will be at least one great song, and we’ll move on to the next cipher.

It's not that as much as there's this distinct sense of vitriol surrounding her that makes me cynical about the whole thing....or maybe it's cause I'm not a huge fan of Del Ray or that I haven't been a music fan for very long so it may just be a new thing to me. But this does all feel like nothing but hype, not invented to move units (but probably captilized to) but instead an internet construction.

There totally is vitriol surrounding her, it’s fueled by those obsessed with the authenticity standard. For me, I don’t care if it’s a contrived commercial product, some people are really good at that. Don’t be cynical, just embrace it all! (and by all, I mean pay no attention to arbitrary standards, you’re of course free to think what you want of anything and anyone)

I like Odd Future. I like LDR. They employ different strategies to get people talking about them, but ultimately I don't think they are very different from one another. Both are(/have) different types of artists making different types of art. I can't wait for Del Rey's album to come out and I feel like this backlash is unfounded and unnecessary. It exists because Del Rey breaks the comfort zone, because critics don't want to be fooled again or something, because maybe they feel burned by Lady GaGa or OF or something. And maybe "Video Games" wasn't the best performance, but her SNL version of "Blue Jeans" was pretty damned good.

I thought the implication here is that Frank Ocean is bisexual, or beyond labels. Either way, it's an excellently written letter/album signoff/whatever. I also thought it was well known that OF simply embraced personas to play up to shock-jock standards. Also to be obnoxious and garner fame by playing in to some preconception of ignorance associated with hip-hop and surrounding themselves with nothing but others who are more famous than they are but who are still trying to jack their #SWAG. Never really figured all the misogyny (okay, maybe to an extent that is true) or homophobia was true for the majority of them. Either way, I still think they've done a lot of value, even if their contemporaries are 'better.'

I MIGHT START TYPING LIKE THIS...FROM NOW...ON.

So, so many problems with this article (http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/07/26/us-science-music-idUSBRE86P0R820120726).

Perhaps a good way to prove the importance of lyrics in music though.

Seems to be written specifically around pop music and says nothing about the quality of lyrics over the 50 years.  Quite often lyrics seem easier to just think of as another instrument as understanding them may not offer anything that brings more enjoyment to the song.

I agree with loudness war problem.  The increase in output is reducing the dynamics and quality of the recordings.

It's worth noting that they focused on melodies & harmonies, though. The complexity in music may now be happening more in the area of rhythm, which wouldn't show up in their measurements.

I don't see how this says anything at all about lyrics being critical, in any case. If anything, I'd tend to think that the obsessive focus on lyrics is one reason that people aren't more demanding about having diverse, interesting music underneath.

You just brought another thought to my head for FLY.

What about music in a foreign language?  Is it to be thrown in to the same bucket of instrumental music (noise)?  Or would you take the time out to find translations of the lyrics if the musical tunes are interesting enough?

Or do you hold them up to a higher value than instrumental music knowing that there are lyrics behind them but couldn't be bothered since you don't understand them by just listening?

I believe that corner of the worm can has been investigated as well. To very little enlightenment on either side, as I recall.

As long as there's a translation somewhere out there it's generally of more value, I would think. I would also say that yes, because there are lyrics even in a foreign language it is automatically elevated as well.

It's difficult to grapple with them if there aren't translations though, especially because I am not great with foreign languages and because English is the world's most beautiful language. It seems pointless to me, if I don't have a means of translating, to read a poem in a foreign language because to me it would mean nothing. Songs, being the best modern equivalent to poetry, function the same way.

English is the world's most beautiful language.

I know I shouldn't, but in what respect and how do you come to this determination?

The sound, the way it's crafted, its beautiful malleability.  Unlike a romance language the lovely sounds need to be caressed out, they aren't embedded, and as such I find them to be much more special. Other Germanic languages I find a bit too rough around the edges, while English can be as hard or as soft as the manipulator desires. There are other languages, I'm sure, that function similarly to English, but no major language I have encountered that exemplifies all the things I love about language quite like English. It's perfectly imperfect.

Um, MBDTF is a masterpiece work of perfection.

I'll look over the rest of this list later. Get the feeling that if Kanye isn't at the top then NMH should be at the top. Two of the greatest albums ever recorded.

Can't wait for this A$AP Rocky album, but I'm pretty sure that "Lana, that's my bitch!" song is never coming out (http://pitchfork.com/news/48880-details-of-aap-rockys-longliveaap-confirmed/). Like it has become this fabled thing, that I'm just not even sure is real anymore.

Also track nine should be fire despite the Yelawolf: 1Train [ft. Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson & Big K.R.I.T.]

There's a song with Drake, 2 Chainz, and Kendrick Lamar too which should be fire. And, likely most importantly, there is a song that only feature ScHoolboy Q and it's the third song on the album just like "Hands on the Wheel" on ScHoolboy's album from this year.

Yeah, I'm eagerly anticipating it as well. Hope it can live up to last year's LIVE.LOVE.A$AP; but considering this current trend of exciting mixtapes leading to disappointing commercial debuts, I might have to temper my expectations a bit.
