BTW, is The Corner good? I liked the book, but the miniseries seemed kind of hammy.
And he directed Short Circuit 2!
Have you guys read Homicide? What an amazing book (if you like The Corner especially). If you have read both, which is better in your opinion?

I can watch a film I love whenever I want, but it's not everyday that the Twins are in the Series.
Here's to a Reds v Twins Fall Classic in 2010.I can watch a film I love whenever I want, but it's not everyday that the Twins are in the Series.very very true. For any team I mean, that wasn't a shot at the Twins. I mean these games are live too, and like you said, you can watch a film pretty much whenever.
My favorite tv theme song of all time is Friday Night Lights.
Okay, a question:
What would you choose to watch in most situations: a championship game of your favorite professional sport or a film that you love?

I'll Fly AwayCritically acclaimed but short-lived show set during the Civil Rights Movement. Created by the guys who made Northern Exposure, but this one isn't zany. I saw about 5 minutes of it once, it didn't grab me. Sam Waterston stars as a southern lawyer, I've always assumed he was playing an Atticus Finch type.
HomefrontCritically acclaimed but short-lived show set during the Second World War. I've never seen it and had only heard of it from reading Kyle Chandler's IMDB page a couple months ago.

Anyone watched Legend of the Seeker? I watched the 1st two episodes, I'm not very impressed but I like fantasy a lot. Just wondering if I should give up now or keep at it.
There's a show called "Steven Segal: Lawman" starting tommorow on A&E.
Yes, Steven Segal is also apparently a cop. And there is a show. Called. "Steven Segal: Lawman". Starting tommorw.
It is a show following Steven Segal around as he is policing. If this is not the greatest thing ever to grace television, it will be a letdown.

The billboards and commercials have been cracking me up for a while now.
The complete series DVD set of Homicide: Life on the Streets is on sale for only $60 at Amazon! That's 7 seasons and over 110 episodes.

I'd definitely say to keep with it, I like the show a lot. I will admit it's a bit "blah" for lack of a better term for the first six or so episodes, but after that it turns into a nice old fashioned fantasy romp a lot like Hercules or Xena, except for this time with overt sexual deviancy themes.

“Rudolph” has consistently occupied the top spot. Ratings-wise, that is.I would have thought Charlie Brown or The Grinch would get better ratings.
I think that's Jenny on the left, but in sketches, when they have wigs and costumes on, it's totally impossible.
It definitely is not.I think that's Jenny on the left, but in sketches, when they have wigs and costumes on, it's totally impossible.Good, its not just me.
Yeah, Boston Legal is a really fun show, though at some point (somewhere into season 4 I believe) it just becomes Kelley (not all that subtly) screaming his political views about 7 times an episode which just got annoying (not that I necessarily disagree with his views but it all becomes a bit too much). However overall its a good show with good performances across the board, especially Shader (I meant to write Spader but I rather like Shader (or Shatder or Spatner...if I had a do over I'd go with Spatner)).
Something like Extras lasts for only 7 1/2 hours, right? But The Pacific is gonna be 10 or 11 hours. Yet The Pacific counts as a mini-series while Extras has two seasons and a movie. Strange.
Something like Extras lasts for only 7 1/2 hours, right? But The Pacific is gonna be 10 or 11 hours. Yet The Pacific counts as a mini-series while Extras has two seasons and a movie. Strange.I don't think the term mini-series is used all that much in British TV. It's only when those shows (e.g. Prime Suspect) get imported to North American TV do they get called a mini-series. But something like The Pacific is American made and is a format separate from regular dramas that are created with the hope that they'll run for a long time, so the format is called a mini-series.
Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between Series and Season? In American TV series refers to the program title, so Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, or The West Wing would be examples of series. Season in American TV would be the separate cycles of production, which usually runs from the fall to the spring. In UK TV they call a cycle of production a series. The hope with American TV is that the show will get strong enough ratings and the network will keep ordering new seasons, while UK TV tends to do a limited number of series (my observation anyway, others might know to the contrary).

I find it interesting too that those 'series' blocks usually are far shorter than any given US season (less than ten episodes). A way to maintain quality, maybe?

I always wonder what is printed on British DVD covers.
Does anyone else play Streak for the Cash on ESPN? I got my streak up to 11 with the Blackhawks winning tonight. It's the best I've done so far.
There's always the feature film.
They had the right idea. Josh is good with a woman to spar with, but Moira Kelly always kinda bugged me. They later got it right with Marlee Matlin and Mary-Louise Parker.I agree she was pretty much the only character I never really liked. She reports to ME, & she reports to TobyI never missed Mandy.
I'm so glad they're finally cancelling 24. The last couple of seasons it's become a show I don't even enjoy very much but can't stop watching out of habit/"I've stuck with it this long".I've never seen more than a few minutes of it. I'm curious about it 'cause of Mary Lynn Rajskub, but it just seems like such a big commitment.

Her?She must be funny or something.
I'm really enjoying Justified. Loved the Chinatown joke in the second ep.
I am watching Sports Night and it is causing me some consternation. I cannot decide if Aaron Sorkin or Joss Whedon is the greatest TV writer of all time.

Best opening credits of a show ever hey?
I dont think Matt has seen a TV made in the last two decades.:)
Anyone catch Tennant and Stewart's Hamlet on PBS the other night? Thoughts?
/filmcast was talking about Party Down saying it was good. They were mistaken. A lot of these actors may be good in other stuff, but this is such an ill-suited venue as they are all such a bunch of goofs and incompetents that they would be fired or the catering company gone out of business. The show seems to be laughing at itself too much, which is good I suppose since I certainly wasn't.

I've seen it 3 times and it hasn't hooked me yet. I'll keep trying 'cause it seems like something I'd like.
So do you people watch shows with anyone else or is your TV viewing a solitary experience?Depends on the show. I usually like to have a batch of both new and classic shows that I'm going through with my gf, but I often have a couple going that she's not interested in. It's always nice to have a TV buddy when possible. Back when it was still on, Sunday night meant going to mom's to watch The Sopranos with her.
And I basically force people to watch Strangers with Candy with me.

If that's not what friends are for then I don't know what is. Man, I miss that show. The shit Jerry said just killed me.
Jerri Blank: Shazam. Look. Drake Rogers. Mmm, he makes me all puffy down there. I'd love to tame his blue vein swayback throbber.
Tammi Littlenut: What do you mean, Jerri?
Jerri Blank: Take him backstage behind the meat curtain, know what I mean? I'm talkin' about pounding out the veal.
Tammi Littlenut: Are you thinking about having sex already?
Jerri Blank: Does a pimp carry a razor?
Tammi Littlenut: I don't know...
Jerri Blank: Trust me, they all do.

Ellen Page was on Leno last night, talking about all this eco-living sort of stuff and deepening my affection. But Leno...every time I see him it makes me wonder more how he ever got work. He is just sleazy and unfunny. He had a few different sort of moments where he'd tell a joke that amounted to flirting with Ellen and you could tell she was a little discomforted by it.
But yeah, Leno isn't good.

I turned off Leno for good the first night the "dancing Ito's" made an appearance. (guys dressed as Judge Ito from the OJ trail)
SNL needs to rip this show a new one.
Yeah, well, he's (David Brent) kind of a dick in that and we all know I don't like unlikable protagonists.
Do you like Extras, Bondo?Yes, quite a bit.
I would agree with you Mr. Tomorrow about Extras up until the Christmas special. I totally cried when he broke down in the BB house. It's the ultimate in niceness and caring about others.Yep, a beautiful moment. Maggie in her new smaller flat and earning money by cleaning set to that Kate Bush song set's you up big time for Andy's on air apology. But still, over the course of the series, Andy's dickish.
I find Michael Scott more unlikable and abrasive than David Brent.

I think this has been very noticeable the last few seasons.
Funny, this week's AVQ&A is all about discomfort comedy (http://www.avclub.com/articles/discomfort-comedy-we-can-and-cant-take,44340/)

That does clarify a little. I didn't like Borat/Bruno (I hate pranks and that sort of lying and deception more generally, no matter how much the person might deserve it) and though I like Louis C.K. well enough, I've been a bit mystified by the love his new show is getting. I gave up after about four episodes. I guess I'm just not made for discomfort comedy.

What, Weeds/The Big C?Yeah, and Tara and Jackie.

The ads for The Big C make me so sick.I haven't seen any of those. It could be great for all I know but whether it's fair or not, Weeds and Tara have made me suspicious of all Showtime shows staring a brand name leading lady.

Nothing about The Big C or Nurse Jackie leads me to believe I need to bother with them.Yeah, although I always feel like I shouldn't be ignoring these shows because I do like the stars. Even Linney.
I quit Weeds halfway through Season 4 (like right before they got to Mexico I think).I never made it through season 1, which is long before everybody started hating it. In fact the ridiculousness that it is now almost appeals to me more than the quirky suburban thing it was originally...almost.

So, I had never watched much Hannah Montana. But, now with my girlfriend having a four year old daughter I watched a few eps the other day. Yes, it is an awful show, but that goes without saying. However, I never realized how scary Miley Cyrus' voice is, it's very deep and manly, like scary manly.

She has some kind of lisp, right? It always sounded like it when I heard her talk, but I tend to stay away from those channels.
I'm kind of ::) about the whole voice thing being referred to as "scary manly." It's a little sexy in the sense that often it is what is unique about someone that is most appealing. Why should women have to be slighted if they differ in this or that way from some "ideal."

I don't adhere to any ideal, but if your voice is gruff and manly, then it is gruff and manly, and that is a scary trait in a woman.
With the impending departure of Michael Scott The Office should not be pursuing Harvey Keitel for the replacement boss (http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-office-now-considering-replacing-steve-carell,44778/); instead, they should take a The Thick of It approach and have a new boss take over the Scranton Branch each season. 1SO, pitch it! Beat Armando before The Thick of It adaptation hits the shores! Undercut the market!

I think I'm done with TV for a while. I think I'm gonna go back to watching TV on DVD when I have the free time as opposed to carving out time for TV every week.
I don't believe in torrenting

They had a couple of episodes focused on Pam & Jim last year, no different than any other seasons, so I don't get this often cited criticism.

Nothing sounds interesting to me, and that includes Boardwalk Empire, because anything done by Scorsese post-Goodfellas isn't worth much effort in seeing. Wait for it o DVD, that's what I'm doing, and none of the other shows sound all that interesting to be honest.

Scorcese is just executive producer. Terrence Winter is responsible for writing some of the best episodes of The Sopranos.

ESPN 30 For 30: One Night In Vegas.
Another impressive documentary in this series, following on from 'The Two Escobars', 'Straight Outta LA' and 'Jordan Rides The Bus'. This one follows the friendship between boxer Mike Tyson and rapper Tupac, upto Tyson's fight in Vegas September 1996 and the drive by shooting which would eventually claim Tupac's life. It features interviews with Tyson himself and a slightly incoherent (isn't he always), but well tailored Mickey Rourke.

Thought this one was pretty disappointing. I liked the comic book approach but I feel like it really could've gone so much deeper exploring the link between the two. Also wasn't a fan of the spoken word dudes.

You know, I complained a lot about the show based solely on its premise. Then last week I actually saw a few clips and it was maybe even a little worse than I expected. Hopefully it's a fast failure.

I won't be watching it for fear that my tivo would be counted as a viewer.:D

I was pretty disappointed in all of those, actually. Two Escobars because of the filmmaking (they inexplicably stretched 4:3 footage to 16:9, making everyone look fat), it was so hard to watch I didn't even finish it. The Chris Evert/Martina Navratilova one was unintentionally hilarious.
The Birth of Big Air is the only one I've liked for awhile. But Winning Time is one of the best.

I'm kind of the same way, but I think my reasons may be different. School and work are taking up so much of my time now that I can't afford to add any new shows to my rotation. So for the time being I will stick with the shows that show up on a weekly basis in my Hulu queue, and as they end/get canceled my TV watching will slowly drop to zero. I basically have to choose between movies or TV due to time constraints and I'm picking movies.
I just would rather spend that time elsewhere right now.I'm over TV.
Sorry, but that's just CINECAST!ing dumb.
Is there enough interest here for an Eastbound and Down topic? Hilarious way to start the season. Danny McBride's masturbation face might be the funniest thing I've seen in months.
The new Whiteboard episode finds me and my friends talking about NCAA football and basketball, the MLB, NBA and NFL. And there is arguing. Enjoy! (http://thewhiteboardpodcast.wordpress.com/2010/10/08/episode-003-part-2-top-10-sports-leagues-5-to-1/)
Should I watch Homicide: Life on the Street before attempting to trawl through The Wire?
Should I watch Homicide: Life on the Street before attempting to trawl through The Wire?
It's not necessary.
I agree, flieger, it's been good. From the snobby resentment of Michael C to Tim Gunn calling out Gretchen in front of everybody, this has definitely been a strong season.
but did anyone watch Tim Gunn's "It Gets Better" video? Really good.I hadn't seen that, just looked it up. He's a mensch.
After a so so episode last week, this week's Running Wilde had me in stitches. It was hilarious. The whole party scene was fantastic.

It's been scientifically proven that Andy Richter makes everything better. I hope Fox doesn't pull the plug soon, I think it's getting better every week.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is back on? I'm six episodes behind? :groans:
I thought this week's was pretty great. Mac's mom and dog were awesome. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is back on? I'm six episodes behind? :groans:They've been solid, but not classic episodes.

You could try another patient.
Which means you're watching season 3. Go back to the beginning!

Also this Rufus Sewell guy is one cool sob. Why haven't I seen him in more stuff?
Zen: Vendetta [BBC TV]
BBC's new feature length mini-series. Starring Rufus Sewell as detective Aurielo Zen and Caterina Murino as his assistant. First things first. It's set in Rome, the majority of the characters are Italian (and Italian speakers), however all the dialogue is in English and some done in regional accents. This was both confusing and annoying. At first I thought they were English detectives working in Rome as some undercover plot. Then we come to the plot, 'dumb as nuts', I would described it. The finale involves a woman, who I shall describe as feral, who earlier in the story was barely capable of using a cigarette lighter, turns out to be a crack shot with a gun, saving Zen in the process.
The saving grace of this programme is the setting, Rome looks wonderful both from aerial and street level scenes.
Will I be watching the next episode...probably just for Rome and Caterina Murino, both wonderful sights, ahem.
But it's no Mad Men.
...but still no cigar.Although you're both wrong, be sure to vote (http://www.filmspotting.net/forum/index.php?topic=8288.0).

I am strangely fascinated by Rufus Sewell... Check out some of his other TV stuff - I especially love him in Shakespeare ReTold: The Taming of the Shrew and as Charles II.

Well I finished this series today, finally. It took a long time but I really enjoyed it. It became better throughout, the way TV shows do when you when become attached to the characters. The production value was quite high, and that went a long way to sucking me in. It's too bad the series didn't continue on to a more definite conclusion. It sounds like the cost of making these film was quite high and so, despite the obvious switch to blue screen backdrops in the last two films, they had to call it quits. :( The stars of the series are the adventures, the characters and the details of shipboard life. Maybe it romanticizes life on the ocean, but damn if it doesn't make you want to go back in time and join the British navy. There's some tremendous characters that come and go through this series, Pellew, Styles, Matthews, and of course Hornblower himself. The acting throughout is generally pretty decent, but once you come to love the characters it doesn't really matter. I know rambler has read the series (he had it on his best books list). I wonder if he's watched this, and what he thought of it? If the tv show was this good I can't only imagine how great the books are. I wonder how they compare to Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey–Maturin series. Anyways, Horatio Hornblower was very much worthwhile. :) | (http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/6827/hornte7.jpg) |

The Wire has no dream-sequences. This makes it superior to The Sopranos.Heh, everybody picks on the dream-sequences. Some of them are really tedious, but a couple of them are pretty great, I remember really liking 5.11, and the Kevin Finnerty stuff in season 6.
@ smirnoff: I'm a little late on this, but I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the Hornblower series!
I read all the books right after watching the series because I wanted more - the nautical language was challenging at first, but I got completely addicted and plowed through them in no time. I can totally see you enjoying them as well.

O man, I read a couple of those books. Didn't realize they became a TV series.Yes, yes you did.
Wow, they made a show out of those books? Cool. I'll have to check those out.
It's been forced on me by numerous family members lately, and I'm now willing to concede that the TBBT is solid-ish in a middling kind of way.Except not funny at all, and nowhere near as funny, complex, endearing, real, or unique as Abed from Community.except way funnier. The best win of the night has to be Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory. He has created one of the funniest and best characters in TV history with Sheldon.I feel like he's doing Lithgow on 3rd Rock from the Sun.
RE: Studio 60 discussion in the movie thread
I gave up after the episode where Nate Corddry's parents had never heard of "Who's on First?", so terrible. I'm looking forward to checking the whole series out on DVD just so I have specific things to cite when explaining to Clovis and iK! how wrong they are. :)
West Wing is among my favorite TV shows, so this makes sense.
It was inevitable after his white years came to such a dramatic close.
Just a reminder that the wonderful Archer returns for Season 2 on FX tonight.
Yep. I wasn't really aware of him till I watched him on The League. But what really clinched it for me was his CDR appearances.
The special was great. I'd watch anything and everything with Bobby Bottleservice in it.
Chain watching Skins is severely time consuming. I don't know if I'll get anything done... ever
Anyone planning on watching The Chicago Code on FOX from Shawn Ryan (The Shield) this upcoming Monday?
I'm only two episodes in, but so far it's great.
Ah, that's why he looked familiar.
I will post thoughts in the Skins thread after I finish laundry and do a bit more reading for classes.
This is pretty genius. And I will likely watch some of it. (http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/03/10/teennick-goes-retro-with-90s-programming-exclusive/)

Oooo . . .cop shows!
I'm starting to question the point of adapting British shows to American audiences. The Office I get....it was short lived in Britain, and the characters display a very different (ie. less edgy) dynamic. But shameless and Skins are still going somewhat strong as British shows. Surely there could be more of a backing by channels in the US instead of adapting them? I mean, should we start adapting your shows? Imagine friends in Birminghamshire, or Mad Men in Cork.
[/rant about media I don't know very much about]
Archer is fantastic!!!
Well, why don't you post that in The Killing thread? (http://www.filmspotting.net/forum/index.php?topic=9928.0)

The Walking Dead has not been sticking to the comic. But if those are your two options definitely do Mad Men.
Bill, have you seen Mad Men? Because The Walking Dead has had a lot of problems, meanwhile Mad Men is very easily one of the top two or three dramas on TV, and probably one of the best dramas ever on TV. For all the hubbub over the pilot of Walking Dead, there was not a better episode of TV in 2010 than The Suitcase from Mad Men.

I never got past episode 3 of Mad Men. Just wasn't into it. Didn't like John Hamm's character, and everyone else was just gee-golly suits and skirts.I halfheartedly watched until part way through season 2. I still keep saying I'm going to try again but it's pretty low on my list.

I rank the penultimate episode of The Pacific and the season finale of Treme ahead of The Suitcase. And I was tempted to be colorful and also put Breaking Bad's I.F.T. ahead because of the title, but I just can't.
I watched the first disc in the first season of Mad Men, it was mediocre. TV is lame. Movies FTW!

I can understand people not getting into Mad Men based on the first couple episodes
It had it's good bits and bad. I certainly wasn't all the way sold after watching it, but by the end of the season I had warmed up to the show enough that I'm super excited about continuing on. The scene where he ends up in the tank was WOW.
It's got some strong emotional moments, tense action, unique scenarios, and gives you the feeling the best is yet to come (which keeps you watching :)).Total agree. The tank scene was really, REALLY awesome. I actually paused and rewound it in order to peep the timing. Seriously cool.
I'm also a huge fan of the show.
I've been reading the comic since late 2003. Hopefully the success of the first season will get more people to check that out.

How did you not go crazy waiting for each new edition?!
I'm in that position now. Read through the series in a matter of weeks recently and now I'm hanging... waiting. It's hard.
Doctor Who!
There's a BBC series currently on. If you can access BBC iPlayer I would recommend it. Its called The Shadow Line. The cast is a strength - Chewie Ejiofor, Chris Eccleston, Leslie Sharp, Stephen Rea and Rafe Spall playing a loose cannon crime boss. It's a weird Tinker Tailor/ cop show hybrid. Glad the BBC have gone back to auteur style drama.

Sam, if I put The Walking Dead at number 1 would you reconsider? It's not, for me, but it's damn good.

Nope. I've little interest in zombies in general. Just gave it a chance because I heard people who shared my sentiment of not liking zombies who dug the comic. Watched the pilot and it was terrible. Don't have an interest in watching anymore. Got shows that are better to catch up on, like Breaking Bad season 3, which comes out on bluray soon.
I didn't count Breaking Bad, which technically did not have a season during the 10-11 season.Oh, what's the official period for the season?

I'll believe it when there's a trailer.
Watched the last season of Cougar Town over the last couple of days. Not bad at all, reminded me of Coupling more than anything else. But more laid back and middle aged. Also, Courtney Cox looks like an alien.

Great, now I have to watch this. Thanks a lot :P
Stupid Emmys. Excluding BB, I guess I'll push everything behind it up and put Mildred at 10.June to June, I think. With some allowance for shows that run into June (like Game of Thrones). Breaking Bad ended before June 2010 and won't start again for a few more weeks in 2011, so it won't be eligible for this year's Emmys, for example.I didn't count Breaking Bad, which technically did not have a season during the 10-11 season.Oh, what's the official period for the season?
The Killing? Seriously?
I thought everyone agreed to hate that show now.
Waterston + Sorkin? Will the monologues ever end??
Has anyone checked out Wilfred, original (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0899203/) or recent FX remake (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1703925/)? Funny?
Even with the Harry Dean Stanton factor, I dropped that one pretty early. I should try again?

Me too. It never really clicked with me.
Not just Harry Dean Stanton, though. Grace Zabriskie, Bruce Dern, Ellen Burstyn, plus the core ensemble: all amazing... and it's damn funny.
a second tier HBO series. How many tiers do you have to go down before you get to John from Cincinnati?
That show was great.Milch apologist. :)
Sex & the City is actually very funny and smartly written.
...
Oh, CINECAST! - Am I gay now?!
jbizz is such a Miranda.
Mad Men
Four episodes in and vaguely interested. Mainly digging the representation of early 60s sex roles. I sort of cringe whenever Vincent Kartheiser is on screen. He reminds me of a high school freshman trying to play an adult role in the fall play.

Does Kenny vs. Spenny get any better, or is the pretty much at the same level for its entire run?If you've seen 1 or 2, you've seen them all.
Didn't know that Rob McElhenney actually gained 50 pounds for Season 7 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I saw a tv spot and thought it was just a fat suit and makeup. LOL. Can't wait for the premiere.
Breaking Bad: Seasons 1-3 are now available on Netflix Instant Streaming (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Breaking_Bad/70143836?trkid=496624).
The potential series would explore the early relationship between the famed psychiatrist and his young patient, an FBI criminal profiler who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers.
After a dozen years of DirecTV I switched to Comcast (well...xfinity) today. I guess they have streaming. Sounds like it's just enough to be a gateway drug to their pay-per-view streaming...anyone have any experience with it? Recommendations?

Why the switch Jeff? I've had Comcast for years now and I desperately want to get away from them, I believe ses does as well.

I had AT&T U-Verse for a few years before I moved to the city this spring and was left with Comcast as my only choice. Comcast definitely beats U-Verse when it comes to free on demand programming (which I rarely watch) but they're so damn expensive. I personally haven't had any bad experiences with Comcast (fingers crossed), but I know plenty of people that have and I definitely wouldn't use them if I had a choice.

A bunch of reasons, mostly because going cable saves a ton of money because phone, internet and TV go through one company. Before, I had Qwest for internet and DirecTV. Each had it's pricing steadily increase over the past few years. Together it is over $200 month right now. Comcast offered $125 / month. As I'm sure you well aware, the industry is completely geared toward stealing each other's customers through hot introductory offers. I'm not the least bit surprised you're leaving. In two years I will be too. I'm sure of it.
I believe "Anal Midget Fantasies" has moved to ESPN.
The fact that it stars Damon Wayans Jr makes me feel old, though. He's only on the pilot, if that makes you feel better.
Drama Supporting Actor- Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)
Drama Supporting Actress- Margo Martindale (Justified)
Coach!
I was pulling for Olyphant
I was pulling for Olyphant
That category was absolutely stacked (though I no longer watch House and have only watched a season of Dexter), even without Cranston.
I was very pleased that Margo Martindale won.
Also, Modern Family can't be that funny.
Modern Family is really good. It probably shouldn't have had EVERY adult actor nominated, though. Why not do that for Parks and Rec or Community? Or, better yet, pick one from each show and spread the love. When there are four MF nominees in one category there is something wrong.
And don't get me started on Community not getting a directing nod. The bottle episode, the D+D episode, the paintball episodes...
I was one of the 28 million who watched The Kutch last night. That was the first time I watched that show. It's not very good; however, seeing The Kutch is always fantastic!
2 Broke Girls wasn't too bad. Laugh tracks are weird though.
I accidentally watched 2 Broke Girls. As unimaginative, crude and unfunny as I find Two and a Half Men.

Is this that sassy girl from that Whitney show? That show seems insufferable.
Yes, she's starring in that one and producing (and writing? I don't remember) 2 Broke Girls. She's been on the last few Comedy Central Roasts and I really don't care for her. Everything I've heard from her is of the "if I say filthy things really loud, because I'm a lady people will find it shocking & hilarious" variety.
So is this New Girl show that Im not going to watch the same as that My Boys show from like 5 years ago that I didnt watch?
I'm pretty sure the way Jim Caviezel looks at the start of this show is probably just how they found him when the casting director came calling.
Awkward. is really good. Believe it or not. My So-Called Life in the Easy A world.

Arrested Development! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Late-season Charles in Charge was at the vanguard of the light entertainment postmodern movement.Interesting. So you're suggesting the Powell years were more daring than the original Pembroke era? I have one minor quibble with you assertion; Nicole Eggert was certainly no social construct, she was adorable in a manner than was absolute and unchanging.
Even within the expected parameters of child-acting, Michael Fishman was just plain awful.Ha, and he gets worse as the series goes on. Different actor in the original pilot, he had to have been better.
Arrested Development! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I just blue myself.
The Powell years got increasingly crazier and self-aware, right? No doubt a major influence on It's Garry Shandling's Show, season 4 of Seinfeld, and Louie.
Watched the pilot for Terra Nova today. I must say it didn't really make an impression on me.
Are there any new must see American shows I should be looking out for this season.

Network TV rarely tends to have anything worth watching with the exception of a few comedies. I'm being slightly snobbish with that comment, but I'm speaking from "the top down." By this, I mean that with channels such as AMC, FX, HBO, and Showtime having such a high quality of programming, very little measures up from ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. I just finished my viewing of all the new network pilots. I realize that shows can grow, but generally speaking the shows with a good pilot usually (and there are notable exceptions) turn out to be worth your time. Sorry for another entry in the format of a list, but I'd be here until November typing out of my specific thoughts on each one (and little blurbs won't do the good or even bad ones justice). So here they are and I am being generous to adjust for those that don't look "top down" as I do.
ABC
Watch- Revenge

Boardwalk Empire is damn good and continues to impress me on a weekly basis.
I really enjoyed Page Eight which had a stellar cast (Judy F*ckin' Davis, Michael Gambon, Bill Nighy, Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz) and wonderful cinematography by Martin Ruhe!

Anyone watched Bourdain's new food/travel series The Layover?
The complete box set of arrested development (well complete until they start making it again) is on sale for $60. I haven't actually seen it yet. Did it ever screen here? Should I just buy it while it is on sale?
Ditto about Rome. Ray Stevenson is phenomenal in that role.
$60.

There lies an old Bondo/AAA debate: he's all about the Kerry Condon, while I'm more a Polly Walker man.

Also, the first season (only 6 episodes, 30 minutes each) is all on Netflix Instant right now!
This is truly the end, and it's sad.
Also, Portlandia starts up again tonight.
I'll be back for seconds for sure.
Even Mr. Show had a few clunkers.
I watched 3 episodes of Todd Margaret and didn't like it much. It feels like the whole joke is right there in the title. It doesn't really get funny, just repetitively awkward.

Oh yeah, and I also finished the fourth episode of Mad Men, which continues to be pretty great. Such great character building so far. Still get taken out of the world each time I see Cole Phelps in a shot.
Is anyone watching The Vampire Diaries? I just caught up with it and am finding it a lot of fun, but I'm having trouble finding anybody else who's watching.
And Archer tonight was incredible.
More to the point, when is it not?
Showtime's Sunday shows have all been renewed- Shameless, House of Lies, and Californication.

I agree, and think alongside Todd Margaret (#TeamMargaret), that it's the funniest show/best comedy on the old picture box. I was struck by how great, even compared to the other episodes, though especially the other season 3 episodes, it was last night.
Also, Delocated was fantastic. I think the 30 minute format will work really well for that show.

I put them on similar levels, I like the characters in Skins (US) better, but what Pants does better (and what SUS did a terrible job of) is developing a sense of place. Still don't/can't believe that show took place in Baltimore, seemed more like filler area blahsville. I enjoy both, and prefer Skins proper to both as well. But Pants is still young, still room to grow, potentially challenge Awkward. for MTV's finest program. Look forward to taking the journey.
Perfectly blending the stylized postapocalyptic look and feel of Mad Max with the teen angst of Degrassi, New Zealand’s The Tribe is one of the most remarkable series to ever hit the airwaves.
Now I still have a ton of catching up to do since I mostly missed the entirety of the first season, but I'm thinking about placing Check It Out up there among best comedies on TV.
Need to watch The Heart, She Holler in full as well.

Though I hope you do see episode 6 and the ending of episode 3, I definitely won't begrudge you for not continuing past epi 2. As a whole, I don't consider the series must-see.I might give it another shot or two. I guess my biggest problem isn't that's it's terrible to look at, it's that I didn't think it was funny.

Who else is getting pumped to hate The Newsroom? :)
does he generally cause so much alarm/reason to not get excited?
I've had Treme season 2 sitting here for over a week, I can't seem to bring myself to watch it. I had mixed feelings about season 1 (mostly enjoyed it, but the Zahn character was dumb, all the "New Orleans is the greatest, most magical place in the universe" shit annoyed me). Anyone got thoughts on the 2nd season?
A few brief thoughts on The Newsroom.
1. Cool seeing Pill. I know a lot of people liked her in SPvtW, but I didn't think she had much to do. Cool seeing her do more here.
2. Glad to see that Mottola (a guy a like) was charged with setting the aesthetic for the series. At times I felt like he was being too generic in what seems to be his first non-Adventureland steps in to drama, but the scene where they were putting together the BP story was great.
3. The musical cues were really bad.
4. Seems like a lot of the relationship dynamics are incredibly generic, so I hope that they put interesting spins on them or branch off in interesting directions. Or perhaps not focus on them as much as the news making process.
5. Both Will and Mackenzie are played by people I have seen multiple times before but can't remember them in those other roles for the life of me. Specifically I have seen a ton of the work that Mortimer is, but I am blanking completely on any of her characters.
6. So do we assume one of these characters is a mouthpiece for Sorkin, or is that irrelevant? Regardless, I found myself in 100% agreement with Will's breakdown speech at the very beginning that got him in trouble (even with the musical cues ruining the end). So maybe that makes me a bad person or something. I love the USA.
7. I'll probably watch the rest of the season, also glad to see Munn not in (or marginalized since I think she was news reporting in the background at one point) this episode. That should be a trend.
I'll ponder it more, maybe.
EDIT: 8. I haven't watched any episodes of House, but for some reason Will seems to remind me of what I have heard/imagine Dr. House to be like on that show.
Suburgatory, 1.1
I feel like if something is labeled a satire, for some folks that means its inherently smart. Watching one episode is admittedly not a fair measure, but this felt really tired. If I ever watch it again, itll be to see if Sisto actually does it with his daughter.

If only Matt the Movie Watcher were here.
And when I hear that Fontana and Levinson's cop show is set in New York in 1864, I pay attention. The period is a familiar one from Westerns and Civil War stories, but in terms of what was happening back in the northeast — and also what urban policework was like in this long-ago period — it's ground that's only occasionally been trod.
[...]And, indeed, Fontana and Rokos' script has a lot of fun playing with our expectations of contemporary cop dramas by showing how things would have worked in the mid-19th century.[...]The series was originally developed at AMC five years ago, and Fontana and Rokos expanded their original pilot script into a two-part story to better allow them to introduce the characters and this world.
[...]"Copper" is very much a work in progress, but it's a work in progress from a creative team whose track record all but demands investing the time to see what it becomes. Fontana isn't infallible (even in the cop show realm, his short-lived UPN series "The Beat," starring a young Mark Ruffalo, was more noble experiment than compelling drama), but the pieces are certainly here for him to do something special down the road.

First 3 episodes of Orange is the New Black were very good. A nice subversion of the "everyone in prison is either evil or wrongly convicted" things that generally happen in stories like the one being told here. Also, I really like the use of flashbacks for the side characters as well as the main character. It's a pretty well done device.

I liked it quite a bit and will most likely keep watching, but I also saw in the end credits that it's based on a BBC series of the same name (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1468773/combined) (the title, in retrospect, does seem much more British than American!), and now, I'm much more curious to see the original, which is supposed to be great, than in continuing with the American version.

I heard the review - so disappointing, primarily because I expect better of them in terms of reviews. They weren't really reviewing the show itself, I didn't think, but rather punishing it for not being the show they expected it to be; essentially, they didn't really assess the show on its own terms. I commented on the Slate Facebook thread (https://www.facebook.com/Culturefest?ref=stream) (scroll down to Dec. 4) if you want to see my more specific complaints about what they said in their review; I also commented on what I appreciate about the show. I hope you do check out Getting On - I'd love to hear what you think!
I haven't seen Getting On, so I don't know if I like it or not, but I often find the Gabfest tends to not do TV very well. I guess to be fair it can be hard to understand a show based on 1 or 2 episodes, particularly the first 1 or 2, but in general Steve and Dana tend to be pretty disengaged when it comes to TV segments.
Anyone else watching The Returned (http://www.sundancechannel.com/series/the-returned)? After hearing the Slate Culture Gabfest discussion, I decided to catch the second episode when it aired on Sundance - and then promptly caught up with the first on iTunes.
Really loving it so far. Beautifully atmospheric and gorgeously shot. Superb cast.
Yes, good point, Matt. I've often wished they'd do a follow-up segment on some of the shows they've reviewed once a season is finished - if they've watched the whole season, that is.I haven't seen Getting On, so I don't know if I like it or not, but I often find the Gabfest tends to not do TV very well. Yeah, it must be hard to review something in that manner. I always try to give a show some time to find its footing. There are some shows (like Orange is the New Black) that they really liked, but yes, for the most part it does seem that way, Matt.

Was irritated that it wasn't available on Sundance On Demand but then I learned of the marathons throughout December. Last marathon is airing this Sunday, I finally can catch up with it 8)
We are currently watching The Returned. I heard on Hitfix podcast that even though it doesn't end after this season, it has an emotionally satisfying ending, but it doesn't solve anything.Yeah, I don't think there's a way everything could be answered/wrapped up (still need to finish the last ep!), but I've been hoping there would be something that would offer some kind of closure.
Victor is a creepy kid; but, more than that, do you think he's representative of anything? He is the zombie that has returned more than once.

Do yourself a favor and watch Review because Andy Daly is a goddamn national treasure.
HBO and Amazon Prime make a deal (http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/04/23/hbo-amazon/).If only for Enlightened and Parade's End, yay!
Shows to go live May 21st.
Man, there's quite a bit I'd love to see on there.
According to commercials, it's incredibly acceptible to show up to the most crowded and crazy party with Taco Bell and/or KFC.

have you kids seen my camping powder?haha
Empire, Fox's hip-hop drama, and that Casey Wilson-David Caspe Happy Endings follow-up over at NBC were both picked up today.
I'm interested in what Terence Howard/Lee Daniels/Danny Strong can showcase in Empire. I'll try out the pilot.
OitNB:
There are lesbians, so can you take it? That's about it though, as far as I can remember.
K, so Oz is crossed off my list. Ok, I think I'll probably start watching OINB soon. :) Thanks!

Now have to add OZ to my list. I don't really remember very much in OitNB that may damage you too badly..Not had a chance to get around to the second season yet
I agree.
I am enjoying the current season though. It's tough to come back from so much time off, I feel like I've lost the strong emotional connection I had with all characters, but it's still a good show.
Emmy nominations are out this morning, and I know there are bigger deal things, but my husband's Adventure Time episode ("Be More") was nominated, and I am so excited.
It's made by really funny people, jb. I think you'd dig it. Don't start with season 1 though. Took a season to get its legs.

I'm gonna give The Intruders another week or so before I start on it, but I'm interested.Same.
Anybody watch The Game on BBC America? How was it?
I've recorded Olive Kitteredge, so I will be watching that soon.Woo!
Blimey I don't remember it that well. :o The show put me in the mood for a re-read. As they mentioned the film is a very weak version of the book.
It's not that there aren't a few interesting ideas at play, but the politics of it is profoundly idiotic. One line: "We do not negotiate with terrorists." I simply don't buy the political calculations being offered.
Black Mirror S1E3
Why does sci-fi always have to show the science going wrong? This is a perfectly reasonable exploration of how perfect memory might lead us down a very bad rabbit hole. But I've tired of jealousy stories, though that's not a great argument against. It does decent things.
Still, I kind of want just a happy story about how awesome this tech would be. Yes, I would indulge in memories of past relationships. Though this premise also sets itself up for Eternal Sunshine decisions of memory deletion...but that can be good and bad...wouldn't we love to be able to lose some of our most embarrassing moments. Those that no one else thinks about but we linger on as if that is what people focus on about us? Or are those memories/experiences essential for growth? Another thing worth considering.

Speaking of HBO, did anyone watch The Jinx? It was really good, though I guess IRL spoilers for the last episode that I missed prior to it airing anyway, and now I reckon I ought to watch that Friendmans thing.

Loved it, even though Jarecki looks like he has a side job as an extreme magician.

Loved it, and so glad we were there listening for the big reveal when it happens, instead of getting in on it after the fact or second-hand.
We sat in silence, speechless, when he uttered that last sentence.
It was maybe the most perfect TV moment I've have ever experienced.
Produced by Platinum Dunes... ::)
Started watching Garfunkel and Oates, which was just added to Netflix Instant. Really enjoying it.
So it looks like the annual crushing of Canadian hopes vis a vis the Stanley Cup is well under way. Also, no NHL thread so I guess the forum isn't too big on that? And yet people watch basketball.
*continues only watching soccer and roller derby*
Does anybody subscribe to services like NHL or NFL live? I am thinking of subscribing in the next season but due to the game timings, I really can't watch them live. But if they give me access to watch the games the following day or two then I will consider it since it is quite easy for me not to know any scores unless I make an effort to check

If the NHL or NFL is anything like football, I'm sure there are plenty of forums or sites where you can watch the games at your leisure. Cough, cough torrents.
Yesterday due to silly UK restrictions, No live football to be shown on Saturdays between 2.45pm and 5.15pm. I watched the first fifteen minutes of the Barca game on a live stream on the laptop cast to the TV :)
Google Chrome actually has an extension for streaming of live football matches.
It kind of baffles me that The Simpsons is still an active show. I feel like the last time I actively watched the show was half of its life-span ago, and even then it was mostly watching reruns from the first handful of seasons. Who is the audience now? Is the show always gaining new fans? Are people who were alive and watching in 1990 still watching?

History of the Earth?
BBC's Planet Earth is good, but maybe too much wildlife and too little evolution for you.
Is that Cosmos: A Personal Voyage?

I just renewed my Singapore Netflix subscription because I heard the second season of Daredevil might be on it. I hope I won't regret my decision; the list (and more importantly, the quality and selection) of programs on Netflix Singapore was less than satisfactory, which led to my cancellation in the first place. And god, the price for HD subscription is quite expensive; $13.98 for HD and $16.98 for Ultra HD. I'm greedy for the best definition, so I went for the 17 dollars package... but I just hope spending almost 20 bucks on the Singapore version of the network is worth it. They didn't have the second season for Penny Dreadful, for example, but I'm hoping that won't be the same case with Daredevil.
HD is 1080 and Ultra HD on Netflix is 4K. I am not sure it is worth it unless you are watching in a 4K TV. Not sure how many computers can do that resolution but even if they do I am not sure it really makes a difference on a small screen.
I haven't tried SG version of Netflix. I was enjoying the US version but now it doesn't work so will be cancelling soon. Will probably take a break from Netflix for a while as I have enough stuff to watch
I never really thought one way or the other about Amanda Peet's acting ability, but she's pretty fantastic in Togetherness.

She is fantastic. I liked her in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as well. That show... not so much.

As annoying as some of them can be, there's something that gets me excited when a dramatic recap sets the mood at the beginning of an episode.
ANIMANIACS is on Netflix.
Goodbye y'all.
Only 3 Seasons of Penny Dreadful (http://nerdi.st/28IyxgO) - there will not be a fourth.
I am seriously bummed about that.
It is/was one of the most underrated shows on TV.

Also, one of those networks does not have a single show in the top20100?
I swear CBS ratings are entirely fueled by elderly people who still have a TV set from the 70's or 80's and no cable. That and shut-ins who have died with their TV on and no one has found them yet.

I watched season one but didn't continue for some reason. I liked it too.
Will come back to this.
Any big X-files fans out there?
When the series was on, I was in my teens, and I caught episodes here and there, but I was never an avid watcher. I'm about 10 episodes into the first season now, and I'm finding it hit and miss. Some episodes are great, and some are just downright awful. I'm wondering if the whole series is like this or if it finds a rhythm later on.
Westworld
Anthony Hopkins' face after Clementine pointed the gun at him. LMAO! Brilliant.
Just finished Season 1 of Broadchurch. Between this and watching The Night Manager a few months ago, I'm prepared to declare Olivia Colman the best actress working today.
Have you seen Sarah Lancashire in Happy Valley. 1SO?I looked up her IMDB and I haven't seen a thing she's in.
Jen Kirkman: Just Keep Livin? is the best stand-up special I've seen in a while. Superb.
Just watched it the other day, too. And, yeah, it's great!Jen Kirkman: Just Keep Livin? is the best stand-up special I've seen in a while. Superb.
Thanks, MT, it was superb. I never would have found it without your post.
I liked the podcast at first but I found it easy to drop when I needed to listen my podcast load. Single-person podcasts in general aren't a great idea.Yes, I don't think the solo podcast works very well. (Trying to think of one I do like that's just one person?)
I was impressed she had a new special so soon after her last one.Just watched it the other day, too. And, yeah, it's great!Jen Kirkman: Just Keep Livin? is the best stand-up special I've seen in a while. Superb. Thanks, MT, it was superb. I never would have found it without your post.
Kirkman has a podcast as well. I haven't listened yet but I did download an episode so it's waiting for me.She's always a really good Never Not Funny guest.
Is Jen K the NNF guest who has the tooth brushing daily ritual?I don't think so, but I'm not as regular an NNF listener as I once was.
I hear it isn't good?

Finished The People v. O. J. Simpson last night. Fantastic show. One of the best I've seen in the last year.
I've always placed them on par with the type of programming from HBO and over the past 5-10 years the same could be said of Showtime and AMC and now even Netflix in terms of placing a high standard on quality (in comparison to say network television). I'd say with the release of The Shield in 2002, they really kicked open the door in terms of what you can put on non-premium cable. That being said they are certainly enjoying the most success over the past few years.
I really like- The Shield, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Thief, The Riches, Damages, Archer, Justified, Louie, Terriers, Lights Out, The Americans, Fargo, Married, You're the Worst, Man Seeking Women, Baskets, American Crime Story, Atlanta, Better Things, Taboo, and Legion
Shows that had strong spots but either were inconsistent or went off the deep end would include for me- Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me, Sons of Anarcy, American Horror Story, Wilfred, and The Bridge
