Title: January MDC - Filmspots 2009
Post by: ses on December 27, 2009, 08:09:13 PM
I can't believe it's almost January already.  Who's in?  And what should our topic be?  Another round of '09 films in anticipation of Filmspots? Free skate?  What other ideas are out there?

I fail to see a problem with that as everyone tries to make lists. The fact my dictation from November is still outstanding also probably has something to do with it.

I didn't say it was a problem, I didn't participate in November, so I was just clarifying, but maybe that would be better to do around the time we are going to make our lists.  I don't have a problem with it if that is what everyone wants to do, I know there are many movies from the past decade that I need to catch up on.

Don't know if I'll be available this month, but I had a thought for a theme.

How about limiting selections to something from The Underrated, The Overlooked & The Misunderstood: A Decade (http://www.filmspotting.net/boards/index.php?topic=7090.0) thread?

I've had such a great run of luck with my dictations that I almost don't want to push it. Aw, heck. I'll give it a go.

On a note that's related in my mind, I gave my five-year-old niece Hanna Montana: The Movie for Christmas. She lost her shit.

Despite thinking I will have a busy schedule, I think I can probably find time for one movie in January. As for a topic? I'm always down for whatever, I don't have any great ideas right now.

Every once in a while, you pull out a pretty good line Clovis. That was gold.

Also, I shall join and wouldn't mind a Filmspot theme. I'm still way behind on my '09 movie watching.

I'm sure there is an overlooked or relatively unknown performance that you all want to champion for the Filmspotters' Top 100 Performances List.  But lists are due January 11 so that might not be a good idea.

Damn, I forgot that was a thing that was happening.

I'm trying to catch up on my few outstanding dictations, and I totally forgot about even joining for Dec. but I'd be cool with a Filmspot theme.

yeah, i think that is the only reason this film will get watched by cinephile types - the cinematography works wonderfully/hauntingly with the (based on a true) story.  the acting by Bello, Patric, and Sewell is also all very good.  that said, this is one film that i wouldn't recommend to just anyone.  i think Clovis is open to difficult material, and the discussion we had around (female) sexuality with Antichrist will make this an interesting comparative.  Bellow's character is a submissive that was sexually abused as a child.  the character understands this abuse as something she wanted and appreciated.  this film is one of the most disturbing and challenging i have experienced, but also quite beautiful.

fyi, that is not the year's best doc.  it was fine, but a bit traditional as far as form and content goes, don't you think?  The Horse Boy gets my support for year's best.  is Herb & Dorothy this year? (i know it is "2008", but i have no idea when it was where) - it is far better.  No Impact Man, The Yes Men Fix the World. i'm sure there are a few that i have yet to see that i'd like more - Beaches of Agnes, Must Read After My Death...

I haven't heard back from edgar, but he gave me three choices:

Two Lovers
Il Divo
Summer Hours

Since they're all on Instant Watch, I'm just gonna do all three. :)

Is it just me or does the guy on the right look totally different in the movie?

Nice Melvil, Il Divo is really a great overlooked movie.

Still haven't heard from him, but I won't be too crushed given my lackluster return rate in this thus far. Where are you BV?
