Title: FYC: Best Animated Film
Post by: smirnoff on March 24, 2010, 11:15:36 AM
This post will be updated with any animated film mentioned in the thread. A film is eligible, for lack of better description, if the majority of its shots do not involve photography of a live actor.

Unfortunately it isn't readily available so probably almost no one has seen it. Which is unfortunate; one of my favorites is in the same boat. It is in my marathon if I ever find a way to see it (and no, I'm not sure "that way" is viable for macs).

Hard to picture one being supported widely enough to win but if that is how you want to use your voting slots, I don't know that I'd object to it from an eligibility standpoint; will get back to you on this.

Title: Re: FYC: Best Animated Film
Post by: smirnoff on March 25, 2010, 12:58:01 PM
Hmm, I didn't realize.

I don't see why it wouldn't be animation. Isn't Wallace and Gromit considered animation? What's the difference between characters move via strings and characters that move via someone manipulating them by hand? Digital, clay, or plastic puppets... it's all not real.

Title: Re: FYC: Best Animated Film
Post by: mañana on March 25, 2010, 01:06:52 PM
I guess with stop-motion, the figures are moved and a picture is taken, and then moved a little more and another picture is taken...etc, and when displayed quickly, it creates the illusion of movement. But with marionettes you just shoot them moving so it's not considered animation. Or something like that. I really don't know what I'm talking about.  :)

I fully realize there is a sentiment that Monsters, Inc is "lesser Pixar"...

but if you rewatch you may note that the first 45 minutes of this film is incredibly meticulous in timing, exposition and the execution of humor.  It is a masterclass in how to invite someone into a universe in a way that fully grounds you before telling you that YOURS is the confusing and scary world!

Then we have the really clever door/scarefloor thing - you can't argue that greatness - and especially how neatly it gets wrapped up in the end.  Speaking of the end, it handles the action sequences in the last reel far better than most all the other Pixar films (notable exception: The Incredibles).

The film's one great shortfall, the antogonist (the octopus guy - Waternoose?).  He is a bit uninspiring. But he given less screen time than I remembered.

Anyways.  There's my pitch.  Do with it what you may.

Too much bad on one page, I need to provide logical counter points...

Countering that Pixar we have a slightly better, but still mostly mediocre, CGI animated film that I think a number of people liked...

To counter the atrocity that is another insufferable Wallace and Grommit cartoon we have the film that should have won the Best Animated Feature from one of the best directors working today...

And since it hasn't been mentioned yet, to counter balance the occasionally pretty, occasionally dull, Sita Sings the Blues we have a stunning feast for the eyes...

Oh, man, FLY. If we're going Wallace & Gromit vs. Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (hilarious), I am more than happy to be in the W&G camp. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit has a charming and clever story. At 77 minutes, Corpse Bride is two times too long. I wanted to like it. I did. I saw it opening day. No. It's almost entirely unappealing.

I want The Secret of Kells to come out on dvd already. It looks gorgeous. Thanks for those caps.

In this review you also seem to imply that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is not a good film, which is both troubling and puzzling. The Corpse Bride is lesser Burton, but still great.

Either way, rounding out my favorite animated films, I think, would be this master class in comedy...

My nominations are one of my favorite animes - Tekkon Kinkreet, two returns to form by Disney - The Princess and the Frog and Lilo & Stitch, one of DreamWorks best films - Kung Fu Panda, the "if their wasn't so much poo 'humor' it would be one of my all-time favorites" pick - Mary & Max, the underrated Zemeckis motion capture - Beowulf, and the truly scary - Monster House.

It is not well loved, but I feel compelled to add it: Cars

On second viewing, I found that it was much better.  The characters are well portrayed and the pacing is well done and the humor is light, but good.  Most of all, I had sympathy for the characters, which much animation has trouble doing.

I'm surprised Metropolis hasn't been mentioned yet.

I'm not sure it's an all-time great film, but the visuals in this are as stunning as I've seen in ANY film animated or not.  Gorgeous and a truly fabulous score:

Surf's Up I caught one day on HBO, just kind of out of the blue... despite the "name" casting (Shia, Zooey, Jon Heder), it worked far better than I would've imagined.  Really charming, and something that you can watch multiple times.  Really inspired supporting casting, with Brian Posehn, Diedrich Bader, and James Woods all really having fun with smaller characters.
