re-gift is cool, or just a free skate I suppose. As for the concern of the "newbies" for the re-gift, I believe it was THATguy that suggested it and he had the idea of it being a free skate for them as to not "punish" them.

Anyways, in.

I really like the regifting idea, but as Bondo pointed out, not everyone could easily participate in that.  I do like the idea of vices.  It'd be fun.

I'd like to be in but I'm overdue on my last two. I plan to watch them eventually but I'm not in a good place for  either of them right now.  I promise I will get back to them.  May I have a happy movie this time?
Title: Re: April 2010 MDC
Post by: oldkid on March 29, 2010, 06:56:27 PM
Vices has to do with films that are about people who have a vice that makes them socially unacceptable.  E.g. Arthur- drunkenness; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels-- theft; Raising Arizona--Kidnapping.

BTW, Colleen, the examples I gave are all happy movies, so that might work for you.

No but I'm definitely NOT in a good place to watch a movie about a main character examining a failed relationship where the other party has moved on.

 :'( :'( :'(

Yeah, Eternal Sunshine was brutal when I first watched it. I was rather thankful that (500) Days of Summer came out last year rather than in the middle of the decade when it would have been a bit more emotionally unbearable.

I don't know that it has to be crappy but just something that you cringe a little when you tell people that you love/like/continue to enjoy watching it.

Oh man, I'm going to have a hard time with this if guilty pleasure will be the topic. I only understand the guilty concept on a very theoretical level. I feel neither guilt nor shame when it comes to movies.

If the theme is guilty pleasure, I'm out. Once bitten...

Also: memory is a funny thing - I could have sworn there were many "meh" reactions to last year's guilty pleasure assignments (so really not good, as you would expect, but also not bad enough to be "so-bad-it's-good"), but I just re-read the thread, and most people found their films interesting/entertaining/pretty f**ing great. Huh.

I'm not very enthusiastic about guilty pleasures either. I'm not sure what I would dictate...

I figure as someone working on the BoD project I should be promoting that as the theme too.

Alright, I thought about this, and figured, initially, that this was the film I wanted someone to write about this month, so I'm sticking to it, despite the fact that there are some really incredible movies on Steve's not seen list, films that I'd really love to dictate.  Also, considering everything in Germany right now... kind of timely, too.

I'd be happy to dictate or be dictated to a second time this month if it helps sort the scheduling.

Anyway, Mr. S.O. Selsnik will be watching my favorite film of the decade, Children of Men

And if he chooses to take on a second, I'd really like him to see Let The Right One In.

Two words: Negative Vote. I had a really bad reaction when I watched it back when it came out.

Hmm, yours would be the first negative reaction I've heard about it. I'm even more intrigued now.

My disdain in the film lies in the portrayal of McCandless.  I won't get into it, it is well documented all over the boards how I feel about Into the Wild, maybe when we get Dr. K's review I will get into it a bit more.

Yep, locked in the basement but without a leash. I want her to be able to move around in the dark without tripping over the chain. Plus, she loves when I talk for her. I'm sure she would comment on this but oh, she's on 999 posts. Aww, too bad. HAR HAR HAR!

Ps. About Into the Wild. I haven't read the book yet but I'm not sure if I should anyway. A book is a book and a movie is a movie. It's a simple truth. Each medium has its specific language and tools for conveying information. There is a section of they share which (imho) shouldn't be the focus of a review. I'm not a fan of cross-media comparison and I try to avoid it whenever possible. The question is what exactly it is you are reviewing. Is it the movie or the material including all its forms of presentation?

I think it is problem for me because with Into the Wild we are dealing with a real person and real events, and because of the subject matter too.

So I've got Little Children in today and I'm about to write my In the Bedroom review.

Do you people want both reviews at once, or should I post one and then the other? I don't particularly care either way. I've been writing like a man possessed lately and am sitting on about 5 finished reviews.

Since I'm reduced to watching most of my movies on laptop (DVD player is going haywire) I won't object. No browsing the internet while the movie is playing  :P
