Title: Filmspotters' Top Animated Features 2010: Discussion
Post by: Bill Thompson on August 04, 2010, 06:22:05 PM
This is the topic for discussion both before, during and after the countdown. Have at it ladies and gents.

One tidbit I'll give you right now, there was only one film to receive both a 1st place and a 50th place vote.

Spirited away makes sense, no one had Hercules at 50, but FLY had it as #1.

These were on my list but not the group list:
5 Centimeters Per Second
Princess
Aladdin and the King of Thieves
The Place Promised In Our Early Days
The Sky Crawlers

I'd throw in The Town Called Panic because it would have made my list if I had seen it.

This list makes me realize how I haven't seen a lot of the ones from Asia. The only ones I've seen were Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, Paprika, and Ponyo. All except Ponyo were in my top 10, but Ponyo was somewhere on that oddball Disney-ified list of mine. I'll hit up more Miyazaki, Kon, and Takahata one day

Brother Bear
Meet the Robinsons
9
Tarzan

The highlighted ones really surprised me. No Sita Sings the Blues? Was just a fad or something last year? I guess Fantastic Mr. Fox will be ranked 92nd or thereabouts in 2011...

No Transformers: the Movie?!? From 58 to unranked, seriously? Bill, 'I'll rip out your optics!!!'

No Heavy Metal? Wow, what the heck happened there?

Reboot: My Two Bobs is a personal sad loss, but in the grander scheme of things not terribly surprising.

Actually Edgar, Sita came very close to making it, I believe it came in at 102-103 o this years list. Transformers was not so lucky, it fell all the way to the 130's I think. I'll post all of this in a day or so, when I feel up to it again.

Sorry guys, I know some of you really want to see the runner's up and such, but I have some real life stuff I need to take care of and even when on the internet I think I need to take a bit of a break from the list. But don't worry, in a few days I will post all the films that received votes but didn't make the list as well as a simple listing of the top 100 in the first post of the countdown.; I'll also fix any mistakes in the actual countdown, add in ferris' missing contributions, and add the list to Best Of Lists for the people who have that. It's too bad we can't be on ICheckMovies, because this and the regular top 100 are certainly good enough to be I think.
Title: Re: Filmspotters' Top Animated Features 2010: Discussion
Post by: Bill Thompson on August 05, 2010, 10:21:46 AM
Okay, took care of adding the numbered list and films that just missed the cut to the first post in the countdown thread. I still have to make the Best Of Lists list, add in Ferris' stuff, fix a few mistakes in the countdown, and deal with the "pick the top five" winner and then this years list will finally be complete.

I don't get why people love Wall-E so much... :-\
The first part is incredible but it loses a lot of steam once they get into space.

Here, here. so much is lost once he goes into space, not that there are no good scenes, just the overall feel is lackluster.

Hmmm, I don't have any problem with the later scenes. It morphs into an adventure film but never loses sight of what it was saying in the first half of the film, bringing things full circle in the end, I love that.

Alright, give me a little break though, I already saw one fox-related animated film on the list.

So these 8 are the ones I have some confidence that I've not seen. A lot of the classic Disney are ones I know I watched as a kid but only remember because I've seen classic scenes in other settings. Anyway, of these eight, I"m not sure I'm all that interested outside of Summer Wars, which I'm super interested in. Japan > America

99. The AristoCats (1970)
96. The Princess And The Cobbler (1993)
95. SamÔ W˘zu (Summer Wars, 2009)
91. The Rescuers Down Under (1990)
88. Anastasia (1997)
82. The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
80. The Brave Little Toaster (1987)
59. The Fox And The Hound (1981)

You should probably watch all those, they're grrrrrreat!

I think this list is a great success as there are many films people have not seen and probably wouldn't have any interest in otherwise.

Out of that list, beside Summer Wars, which I need to see as well, I highly recommend the Thief and the Cobbler.  It is really imaginative, visually stunning and Johnathan Winters is actually funny.

Yeah, I figure it should be on my list to actually watch if only because I like the Arabian Nights themed stories. Aladdin is one of my favorites and the TV Movie Arabian Nights would nearly make my top-100. I'll leave the others for when I have a kid (or when my nephew is a few years older).

33. Majo No Takkyűbin (Kikiĺs Delivery Service, 1989)
31. Kurenai No Buta (Porco Rosso, 1992)
22. Tenkű No Shiro Rapyuta (Castle In The Sky, 1986)

I had so much fun watching films in preparation for this year's list. A couple even ended up in my top 100 (Whisper of the Heart, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time). So, I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of these.

I also anticipate Satoshi Kon's films moving higher on the list as more people see them, particularly Perfect Blue. The Pixar run at the end there kind of made me a little queasy.

It gets a bit ridiculous though. I mean, I had all but two on my list and like all of them but it still feels like an overstated level of dominance. I guess the problem is that we can't agree on which are the best so you've got everyone putting their personal favorite few at the top and the end result is all of them get up there. I'm sure there are a few people who would do so, but I just don't think most people submitting ballots had 8 Pixar films in the top 20 or whatever it was. At least not people who have seen enough animated films ;)

If I was a little too bitter through the process though, the one that really did me in was Nausicaa. Aside from being my top animated and top-10 overall film, looking through the lists I could have sworn it was headed to a top 5 finish so to see it back in the 20s was pretty shattering.

Just saw Summer Wars, on the big screen. It is a shame I did not get a chance to see it before voting finished, it would definitely got a vote from me, probably in the top 20, need to check my list to guess where, but there is always next years voting.

I don't really think that's the case. There are many people, and there were many ballots that played this out, who think that the Pixar movies that were at the top are that great.

We should do it again if only because 5 Centimeters Per Second finally has the cabal it needs to get onto the list. Though I haven't seen zarodinu around much and corey doesn't participate in things. Also The Illusionist and Town Called Panic should be on the list. We'll have to see what the plan is with retro filmspots but I'd certainly be willing to run the show in its traditional summer spot.

My preference would to apply the Top Docs system with the two-phase shortlist/rating setup but if we wanted to do it in the simple ranked ballot system that would be very little effort required aside from putting together a presentation layout.

Well, in the Doc system you rate all the films in consideration that you've seen so if you didn't like it, it takes that into account.

This year is going to be an interesting one for animated films.  There are a lot of excellent possibilities:

Preview of 2012 Animated Films  (http://www.cartoonbrew.com/disney/preview-2012-u-s-animated-features.html)

Brave, released in June; Frankenweenie, released in Oct; ParaNorman released in Aug; and others that might be quite excellent.

Last time we did an animated list, it was in August.  Should we stick to that schedule?  Put it off to Sept or Oct to give these films a chance?  Honestly, last year wasn't a great showing for animation, and this year is shaping up to be pretty good.

Burton has done some of his best work when he got involved in animation.  And the original Frankenweenie short is classic.  I'm really looking forward to it.

Would anyone be up for a no-frills update of the Top 100 Animated features? Just have everyone submit their Top-50 ballot, use ordinary cumulative point scoring and I'd post up the new list with no special presentation? I would like to see what the new list would look like but I don't want to make it a whole time-intensive, stressful venture for anybody.

Question: do shorts count?  If not, what's the cut-off point in terms of running time?

Decided to move into a new thread (http://www.filmspotting.net/forum/index.php?topic=11459.msg690970#msg690970) for the list. Eligibility is discussed but it will be far broader than Bill allowed. Shorts are good.
