The Querelle cover is weird. Looks like it was made by AI.

I watched Silverado so much as a kid that I see a lot of it with nostalgia glasses. It's not as good as other westerns but I enjoy it well enough even now.

June!

Blue Velvet (4K) - One of my favorite movies ever since it came out. Nothing new from the Blu-Ray, but will absolutely upgrade. Purchase.

The Underground Railroad - I absolutely loved this. Great suite of bonus features too (is Jenkins doing commentary on all 10 hours?). Purchase.

Bound - Never saw this, but it sounds like something in my wheelhouse. Rental.

Querelle - Haven't seen. I run hot and cold on Fassbinder, but this might be worth a look. Rental.

Victims of Sin - Again, haven't seen... but it sounds great! Rental.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (4K) - Once a favorite, but I've grown tired of it. Pass.

strong month!

Silverado
What did you think of John Cleese? I thought it was like the good version of Jeff Goldblum. He brings a different energy and he shouldn't work, but every moment is gold and he doesn't overstay his welcome.

Also, what did you think of Costner?

Mátalo! (1970)

I see why this made the Spaghetti Western list. The plotting thinks far outside the box, when it isn't blatantly ripping off other ideas. (One assassin uses a boomerang, and he takes awhile to deploy but doesn not disappoint.) Dialogue is exceedingly minimal. Visually, it's as experimental and aggressive as Natural Born Killers. Stands apart from other Westerns in ways both exciting and exhausting.
RATING: ★ ★ ½

Is this the AFI top 100 or a marathon of violent Robert De Niro films? I can see why one limps over the finish line. :))

Ha! He's exhausting!

I have 25 Scorsese titles between Raging Bull and Goodfellas. I don't enjoy it for the toxic masculinity, I enjoy it because it is - my opinion - one of the best directed movies ever made. The swirling camera combined with the tightly controlled/somewhat improvised performances creating the dizzying intoxication that conveys the appeal of this lifestyle until it curdles into a cautionary tale, is the most brass band example of everything a good director aims to achieve.

I'm in agreement with you, 1SO. Well said, especially this excellent sentence,
"...creating the dizzying intoxication that conveys the appeal of this lifestyle until it curdles into a cautionary tale..."

I couldn't help but be impressed throughout the film: The pacing, the camera work, the dialogue...

It's not my cup of tea, but it is something to behold.

I've seen a lot of stuff that is more bonkers than Akira, but it has its wild moments for sure.

Is this anything to be concerned about?

Silverado

A mixed bag for me. I can feel the film pulling its punches often, I suspect on account of the PG rating. That took away some of the intensity of the film for me in moments of action (or potential action).

The best scenes were simply when the characters were speaking to each other. Around the campfire, or in the saloon, or on the trail. The ensemble is so rich, and it was enjoyable seeing them mixed together in various combinations and have moments together. The plot oriented proceedings or action set pieces tended be more of an interruption than a highlight unfortunately, concluded by a final let down rather than a show down.

Highlights:
-the score (at times)
-Linda Hunt
-Scott Glen
-the ensemble

Lowlights
-Chekov's Goldblum
-cowboy hats than curl up in the front
-the ending
-too much plot
