I was a little perplexed about which films to include in the poll, but I basically went with the ones that had a reasonable number of votes on IMDb.

I'm sure I've seen one or two of the shorts at some point, but I can't recall which ones.

2013 edit: now I know which ones

I know what you mean. I kind of remember Street of Crocodiles and saw PianoTuner of Earthquakes and a mix intro that I think is called Tales of the Brothers Quay. Thought I'd seen their Alice in Wonderland, but that was Jan Svankmajer. I hope someone will come forward and recommend some great ones.

The Comb
* *

What The Brothers Quay do, they do really well. Technically, I would call them pioneers in stop motion animation. The images are like sets you want to take home with you afterwards, and hopefully scare the crap out of your little brother or disturb your aunt for days afterwards. However, they use style over substance in a way that makes Terry Gilliam a dry, reserved filmmaker by comparison. I can't get involved in the emotions of the story because my brain is working so hard trying to figure out what's going on. Too much talent, too little focus and restraint.

Street of Crocodiles best defines their style. Wonderful atmosphere, incomprehensible storytelling (which is fine at 20 minutes). 2010's Maska is their 2nd peak and I put it on top because it shows how they've grown over the years. It's also easier to follow, like the Quays adapting Under the Skin.

I'm harsher on Institute Benjamenta because I like them better in short form, where the style can vary from film to film. 100 minutes of sameness is punishing.
