Kanal (1957 Andrzej Wajda)

A

There is something about this film that really struck me. This is a director whose voice I must learn more about.
-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

The Insider - damn, that was almost perfect

yeah.  pretty much.  And that scene in the Chinese (Japanese?) restaurant was all-time brilliant.

Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 2006) -

Great action scenes, some great dialogue, fairly standard plot, but a completely different kind of Bond courtesy of Daniel Craig. And the love story ventures into OHMSS territory, which is the best of things. Pretty great way to resurrect a great franchise. I mean it was the perfect amount of origin story, and the way it opened in B&W was brilliant.

Rating: ****

P.S. Eva Green is stunning.

Corndog, you're awesome.

Most of all Rescue Dawn is another film that has helped boost Christian Bale back up in my eyes, his performance in Rescue Dawn and a few other movies I have seen recently helped me remember that he can be a great actor when he wants to be.

I think it's his best performance.

I'd put it up there for consideration for sure. The best I've seen from him so far would have to be The New World, American Psycho, 3:10 To Yuma and now this. I would still probably give a slight edge to Psycho, but I think all are great performances.

He is also fantastic in The Prestige.

My feeling on the lack of quality in that picture and the horrendous-ness of every non-Bowie performance is pretty well known around these parts.

Yeah it's a goodie. Who will be in charge of the next Bond, anyone know? Forster needs to be banished.

No director attached yet. For courtesy, Forster was 'asked' to direct and he 'turned the offer down.' Only the screenwriters and the regular cast are known at this point. Even the title is still only Bond 23.

I was not aware of this. Don't blame Johansson for everyone else; she is truly awful.

I don't just blame her, I blame everyone not named David Bowie for that film making me hurt so much inside. But, I've discussed this many times, so I will leave it at that.

Rescue Dawn (2006) ****
http://billsmovieemporium.wordpress.com/2009/11/10/review-rescue-dawn-2006/

It's all the best of Herzog, the meditations on life, the conflict with nature, the weird as hell moments and surreality of it all, but like usual Herzog pulls it all off. I especially liked seeing Steve Zahn in something serious, he's a favorite of mine in comedies but it was cool to see him do so well in a serious role. I would say the same thing about Toby Huss, but he's been great in serious roles before and is great in every role he plays. Most of all Rescue Dawn is another film that has helped boost Christian Bale back up in my eyes, his terrible turns in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and Terminator Salvation seriously soured me on him as an actor, but his performance in Rescue Dawn and a few other movies I have seen recently helped me remember that he can be a great actor when he wants to be.
So glad you liked this so much, Bill, and I agree with ya'll about Bale's performance - he's so good in this. Bill, I can't remember; have you seen Little Dieter yet? I think Bale really captures something about who Dieter Dengler was, based on what I saw in the documentary; it felt like an authentic evocation of his personality. And was it on the special features of Rescue Dawn that Bale or Herzog said Dengler's two sons inadvertently called Bale "dad" a couple of times? Can't remember where I heard that, but anyway, it makes sense.
