Spirited Away (2001, Miyazaki)

This changes everything.  I need some time to compose myself.  Review to come later.

This is what I like to read. :)

Once a Thief

John Woo time.

And I'm totally pulling half of these from old reviews (with some polishing) because I'm not watching slow motion action porn again.

rented and watched with my 10 year old daughter. It was as touching the second time through. Imaginative storytelling. And I love Doug.

Brother's Bloom 7/10

I got bored. I'm not sure why. Maybe because I had never seen anything like Brick before. And I have seen many movies like Brother's Bloom.

I loved the character of Penelope though. One of my top favorite female characters.

She was really great.  That could easily have been way over the top.

7 out of 10 sounds about right.  A second viewing could improve that for me I think

Last week I watched a bunch of Kubrick.  Most of these are movies I'd never seen before.

1.   Day of the Fight (1951)... An interesting glimpse into the life of a boxer, but nothing remarkable

2.   The Killing (1956)... A surprisingly enjoyable heist.  Worthwhile, but especially for the fight with the hairy shirtless guy

3.   Paths of Glory (1957)...  Loved it.  Kirk Douglas is one of the most likeable, noble Kubrick characters ever

4.   Spartacus (1960)...  Kinda resembles "The Ten Commandments" but without all that religion. Very good, but it felt long

5.   Dr. Strangelove (1964)...  Peter Sellers' Brit was my favorite.  Overall not as funny as I thought it would be.  Must see again

6.   2001:  A Space Odyssey (1968)...  Amazing.  Silent-but-deadly robot in space PERFECT.  Nothing equal to this

7.   A Clockwork Orange (1971)...  Why can't this be 2001.  Make it stop

8.   Barry Lyndon (1975)... I loved this movie.  Thought it was hilarious.  Was it supposed to be hilarious?  Loved this, every bit

9.   The Shining (1980)...  Hey, that creepy bartender was in 2012!   ;D  Very scary movie without much gore.  Kewl

10.  Full Metal Jacket (1987)... Really good.  Not sure if it was what Vietnam was really like, but fascinating.  Music A++

11.  Eyes Wide Shut (1999)...  Who knew an orgy could be this boring?  Mine aren't.   :D   Get divorced already, Tom & Nic

I'm missing Killer's Kiss, Lolita, A. I., and a few of his short films.

Wow, that is a lot to put yourself through in one week.  I am not sure how much of AI you can say his, I know he started the project and probably had a script completed, it is a Spielberg movie in the end.  I think Strangelove gets better each time I watch it, I just love the performances.

Paths of Glory is by far one of my favorites, I hope they will restore and release it on BD one day.

The Mechanic

I think that Charles Bronson all too often gets snubbed by my generation.  I mentioned him at a party a few months back and everyone in the conversation laughed.  When I stood firm on my belief that he was a great action star in his day someone challenged the idea he was ever viable.  Well, The Mechanic is further proof that when directed well Bronson was great.  Its too bad that Jan Michael Vincent is SUCH A TOOL.  He nearly ruins the film with what can only be described as the most stiff performance I've seen in a long time.  The first 15 minutes are pretty stellar with a cleverly designed and executed assassination.  Totally worth a look.

Grade B

Bronson is one of my all-time favorites.  Haven't any of those people seen Once Upon a Time in the West?  You're right about JMV, I thought he was pretty hilarious.  Still a fun movie.
