Drag Me To Hell (Sam Raimi, 2009) -

Am I the only one that found this quite laughable? The plot was hilarious, the acting was overall dreadful, and the dialogue wasn't meant to be this funny, was it? The special effects were very unconvincing and the film just didn't scare me. I am by no means a horror genre connoisseur, and I do not scare easily, but there was nothing I thought was scary here. The demon idea and the guy that played the psychic were the only high points in an otherwise laughable presentation.

Amelia (Mira Nair, 2009) -

As a film it was very average. Some of the dialogue was bland as were the performances. Swank was good, but it wasn't the easiest to overcome the accent, though I did. The romance seemed stale between Swank and Gere and Swank and McGregor. The overall unfolding of the story was not very compelling either. But look, Amelia Earhart is a tremendous figure. More than just a pilot, more than just a woman, more than just an American, she was a human being. As a history guy I can appreciate just how amazing she was as a person. Amelia had a passion. She was a celebrity, a wife, a friend, a pilot, but more importantly she was herself. The film gets this part right. It was very romantic in this respect. It romanticized the world and life the way that she lived it. There were multiple moments that gave me chills and/or even made my eyes water a little. There were moments of stunning visual beauty. The concept and the character are great, but the execution and the film do not fly as high as Amelia herself.

It was supposed to be campy and fun, two things I thought it did quite well.

Yeah, it's supposed to be campy, but I thought the best part of the movie was the parking garage scene, which actually worked as legitimate horror.

Think you missed the point. It's supposed to be campy like the old EC Tales from the Crypt comics.

Well if I had known the point I'm not sure I would have wasted my time with it. Clearly not my kind of genre, the whole looks like a horror movie but we're gonna make it dumb and funny

Even movies that scare the hell out of me like Psycho and The Shining I find funny in a dark, morbid way.
