Away From Her (2006) ***1/2
http://billsmovieemporium.wordpress.com/2009/11/14/review-away-from-her-2006/

Gordon Pinsent and Julie Christie make this movie. Don't get me wrong, the direction is fine, the themes are well handled, but those elements are merely good, it's Pinsent and Christie who push the film over the top.

Probably?  Which of these films haven't you seen?

I've seen them both, but I'm still not sure the comparison is any more than minor. Judging by today's screening this film is going to pick up the same undeserved following of the mainstream Caucasians who feel they are not only insightful for seeing an 'independent' film, but also because they can sympathize with someone who is not nearly as light as they are. However, unlike Slumdog Millionaire, Precious is a good film that does deserve a lot of the love it's getting, just not nearly as much as I imagine it will garner. It's essentially a shoe in to get a Best Picture nomination too.

Vendredi Soir

35 Rhums
Nice write-up, Em. I need to catch up on some Claire Denis. The Intruder is on Netflix Instant - is that one worth starting with or should I start somewhere else?

Start with Vendredi Soir.  Out of what's on Netflix, that's her warmest film.  Second, go with Nenette and Boni.  But if 35 Shots of Rum is playing in your city, make that your first Denis; that's her warmest film.
Looks like 35 Rhums will be coming here next month!

Oh, awesome!  If you're going to see Rum for sure then I say just go ahead and make Vendredi your first Denis, Rum second, and Nenette third.
