Quantum of Solace
Dir  Marc Forester

THis jockeys for postion as my favorite Bond film.  I LOVE the story and the way its told.  I DO NOT care for the filmmaking, specifically the editing and action direction.  BUT, again the story comes through so strong that I don't care.  The scene in the Opera House is astounding, still.   But this viewing was miserable.  I watched it waith a bunch of friends who all HATED it.  And they talked and made snarky, less than funny remarks, than complained at the end that they had no idea what was going on, couldn't follow the story, and other rude comments.  I lost it.  I didn't yell, but I let fly a bunch of my own snarky comments that basically amounted to me saying if they'd all have shut the CINECAST! up and payed attention instead of talking they'd have followed it.  When they brought up each flaw in the plot or story, but I had the answer, they seemed a little shocked.  Its all there, and I love the way its presented.  Another story that demands attention and participation.  It requires some work on the audience's part, but its totally worth it.
I got the story, it was another shallow revenge flick loosely tied around international crime.None of the action setpieces worked. Either they tried something that utterly failed like juxtaposing the footrace with the horse race or had horrible flaws like really bad CG. I really didn't enjoy this film, although I wasn't keen on the first one either.

A Christmas Carol (Robert Zemeckis, 2009) -

Quote
The film was just as good as other Christmas Carol adaptations. It packed the same punch, the same imagination, and even had some really dark and startling moments. But I think what makes this a great film is the great animation to go along with the great story...

Up

Still a magnificently moving film. I can barely wrap my head around how someone can create a film filled with so much adventure AND so much poignancy.

5/5

Grade A

I am putting on my queue at your recommendation.  I was going to give it a miss, even though Casino Royale was amazing.  Now, I am going to give it a chance.  In time, I shall either thank or blame you.

Mimic (1997) **
http://billsmovieemporium.wordpress.com/2009/11/15/review-mimic-1997/

As a big GDT fan it hurt to watch this movie at times. It's a lot like Aliens, Predator and The Thing, only minus any of the coolness, good acting, or ya know, being good. The one aspect where I always feel confident in GDT, creature design, was hit or miss as well. But Mimic's worst sin, it's freaking boring, so freaking boring.

I stopped watching. And I love GDT, too.

Why is it Ok for a movie to have a horrible story and characters as long as there are lots of effects? I have never understood this logic. Is there a reason it cant have lots of effects AND a good story?

Because the Himalayas probably won't be flooded any time soon and a giant ship likely won't crash into the White House in my lifetime. I can, however, pay 10 bucks and see a pretty damn good facsimile of these events. It's worth it sometimes.

Ok fine I can see wanting to see that stuff, but it doesn't answer my question. Why cant the movie be made to show those things AND have a good story.

Here is why, people let them off the hook over and over again. They have been tricked into thinking that the two things CANNOT go together for some reason so they accept it as fact.

My point is why do you accept that as fact let alone somehow a good thing.

There are good ones (both asteroid movies from the late 90's are great, I think). Maybe 2012 is a good one.

For the same reason that a pizza doesn't need to have the world's finest toppings to be good. Movies can be fun and fun alone, they don't need a great story, characters or plot. If a movie has plot and boom boom action that's fine and dandy, but there's nothing wrong with a balls to the wall action type film that says to hell with story and simply wants to have fun.

That still doesn't really answer my question. It strikes me as odd that story is the one thing that people will accept being terrible when it really is the most important part of a movie.

Would be be willing to forgive a movie with terrible lighting, or blurry camera work? How about obviously terrible effects? I dont think so.

Yet it is ok to make a movie with a terrible story. This strikes me as even more odd considering these types of movies tend to have HUGE budgets. Why not spend a little of the 150 million on also telling a good story?

Would they somehow be less "fun"? I cant see why.
