Soderbergh apparently hates that film.
He can hate it all he wants, I really like it.
I like it too, but I certainly understand why he doesn't.
Hmmm, what are your reasons/his reasons I mean? I'm not as big of a Sodie fan as you are, so your insight here would be appreciated.

I don't remember Soderbergh getting real specific about his disappointment in the work he did on The Underneath and generally in the period between sex, lies and Schizopolis. Mostly, though, I think he probably feels like he was starting to phone everything in, especially by taking projects he wasn't passionate about. Soderbergh really wanted his second film to be Quiz Show, and when Robert Redford took that away from him (long story short) he began a period of filmmaking that was devoid of passion and creative interest. That didn't reemerge until the renaissance that was Schizopolis, his first masterpiece. The Underneath certainly isn't a bad film, but I think Soderbergh's touch is noticeably more distant.

Sherlock Holmes (Guy Ritchie, 2009) -

I knew I didn't like Guy Ritchie. I have long hated the British director, without ever seeing any of his films. I just knew I wouldn't like his touch and his style and this film confirms the long, mysterious grudge I have held against the man, though I still think I should at least check out Snatch. and maybe Lock Stock due to their popularity among at least some. Despite it being directed by Ritchie, who actually manages to pull of a few nice stylistic things in the film, I still knew I had to see the film. It stars one of my favorite actors in Robert Downey Jr. and my No. 1 celebrity crush in the ever so beautiful Rachel McAdams. This movie changed neither of those opinions. RDJ is quite good as usual and has his usual wit and charm. Rachel McAdams, who I have never thought of as a great actress, though certainly serviceable at times, was the same in this, yet managed to sex the film up just the right amount. Jude Law I am fairly indifferent about, and here he too is the same. The problem I had with the film was the overall action style of the film and the plot of it. The style is too action packed, in my opinion for a Sherlock Holmes film, and not enough academia. The plot was not for me, involving the supernatural and not enough raw criminals I guess is how I'd put it. I don't feel impressed, especially by the ending. Certainly not a bad film though.

Forrest Gump

The backlash against this movie is so stupid. It's brilliant. And say, isn't this by the guy who made BttF? What ever happened to that guy?

Is it a backlash if I hated it when I saw it in the theater in 1994 and have never had a desire to revisit it?

Colleen took the words out of my mouth.  My impression on leaving the film was: "Why did movie makers think that we needed as yet another take on Baby Boomer history?  And who told them that laughing at developmentally disabled folks is funny?"

THIS.

As a card carrying member of Generation X, that was pretty much my take on it.  In fact, right around that time I was spending way too much time on a generation-x newsgroup (Usenet, kids.  Look it up.) bitching about just these sorts of things.  Good times.

The Bourne Ultimatum

Pretty good.  Probably my favorite action flick of the decade, apart from Casino Royal, and MI:III comes up a close third.  I need to watch it again, though, cause I was pretty distracted by interruptions.

Antichrist Lars Von Trier, 2009

Misogyny! Alright, now that's out of the way. Man uses his (obviously) massive intellect to try and control the unpredictable emotions that turn up in his wife when their son dies (while they're CINECAST!ing! lolz!). Immediately, Dafoe is like "nah, traditional medicine? I'm above that shit, son" and he takes her out to the woods to confront Gainsbourg's worst fears about herself... or something (she's the devil, bro!). So Dafoe's suffocating rationalism comes vs. Gainsbourg's guttural emotionalism. Audience wins. Why? Because when Von Trier isn't using annoying jump cuts and reframing his (dark as hell) compositions, this is a wonder of a movie to look at. Those five or so tableaux when Gainsbourg is walking through the woods on their way to the cabin are pretty much the greatest thing any of us will see this year and it's the highpoint of the movie. And I loved it when it gets all foggy at the end. Anyway, looks good, but looks can kill (not really). The movie's also kinda heavy into the symbolism and I'm useless at that so whatever. There are trees and references to the bible and their woody wonderland is named Eden as if the film needed more things to hang around its neck. It's kind of silly, too, I think (talking foxes!) and that's part of it's charm, I guess. Chaos reigns, I guess,  but women reign supreme. Hey, what does the ending mean?
