Top 5 things you dislike about your top 5 movies
« on: August 03, 2011, 08:51:18 PM »
Be it a line delivery that you think is sour, a musical cue you find inappropriate, a camera angle that's too show-offy, an actor you think doesn't fit the role, an scene you would eliminate outright... that sort of thing. It doesn't have to be from your top 5 movies (a personal favourite will do I suppose) but I encourage you to make the effort. Even great movies can stumble after all. So what are the biggest blunders in your favourite films?

I'll go first... and I'll just work from my top 5 films as of last year. And I'm going to add this as a rule: no apologizing! State your grievance, just. :)

1. Terminator 2 - The kid who plays Miles Dyson's son is terrible. I cringe every time he speaks.
2. Never Cry Wolf - It lulls during a particular campfire scene quite badly iirc and to a lesser degree in a few other scenes.
3. Amadeus - It is a bit long.
4. The Fog of War -
5. Watchmen - The end credit song is an awful Dylan cover that's way so intrusive! I can't mute it fast enough.
6. Braveheart - When William Wallace marries Murron and they meet secretly in the woods, her wedding dress is so ugly that I laugh to the point of tears. It's not supposed to be a funny scene, which just makes it that much funnier to me.

1. Fanny and Alexander - The fart scene.  Even Bergman can't save a fart scene.
2. All That Jazz - The "Air-otica" number drives me nuts, especially the "Don't forget to ask about the FUN FUN FUN plan!!" guy.
3. El Norte - All of the white actors in it are pretty bad.
4. Stop Making Sense - Bernie Worrell's noodling (and don't get me wrong, I love P-Funk, but Worrell is responsible for a lot of their shitty stuff too)
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - I really wish it was almost anyone besides Jim Carrey.

1. FIGHT CLUB
Technical mistakes. (Meat Loaf's pants falling down in the background/office thermostat changing colors.)
2. MEMENTO
Uh, the lighting in the bar? (I'm stretching.)
3. CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND
The "ghosts" in the crowd.
4. APOCALYPSE NOW
Fake spearing.
5. CASINO
The "Love Is Strange" sequence.

The "Love Is Strange" sequence.

Hmm, could you refresh my memory?

Ace sees Ginger for the first time, and as she's walking away from the craps table, slo-mo is triggered and "Love Is Strange" kicks up--an indication, from Ace's perspective, of "love at first sight."

Using last year's list:

5. Blade Runner - I don't find Sean Young alluring at all. The relationship there is just kinda whatever. And the CSI enhance scene goes on too long.
4. Magnolia - The rapping kid, easy.
3. Three Comrades - Robert Taylor isn't even close to as magnetic as his three other costars (Margaret Sullavan, Franchot Tone, Robert Young)
2. Pan's Labyrinth - Uh, it's too short?
1. There Will Be Blood - I understand and am ok with it, but that Paul Dano plays both brothers is kind of annoying. I am a fan of his Eli performance but the fact that he was both just kind of sits in the film.

This is great, and I agree with most of the above picks. (Fight Club for me, I'd go with the conversation before the car crash. It stretches the main twist too far into unbelievability.)
I'll try to not refer to my reviews and perhaps come up with something fresh.

1. The Godfather - There's a scene where Brando is in a room full of genuine, old Italians and he looks like a guy in makeup trying to be one of them.
2. The Graduate - "save a piece for me ... of the wedding cake."
3. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest - The fishing trip. It's like my movie got hijacked.
4. Die Hard - The fall down the elevator shaft. I'm sure this one was in my review, but it kills me every time because the film is far more realistic than 80's escapism usually gets.
5. The Silence of the Lambs - In a film of multi-dimensional characters and bit parts, Dr. Chilton could have used some shading. There are also a couple of quick cuts to young Starling I didn't need.

A lot of people cite this; but, for me, the space monkeys' facial reactions save it. (I wish spoiler tags were working, so I could expound. Rain check.)

All minor quibbles...

1. Schindler's List- The final scene where the actors are with their real-life counterparts. I still don't see a need for that, takes me out the fact that I'm viewing a film no matter what point the filmmakers wanted to make.

2. American Beauty- Wes Bentley being a sissy. I get that it is all about the house he grew up in, but the movie is about people undergoing a great deal of change and I think Bentley takes too long to finally defy Chris Cooper. I'd punch him in seconds.

3. Magnolia- The frogs. My personal interpretation was that "hey life is crazy" and I'm sure it can be interpreted deeper than that, but if the scene wasn't around... there would be no hoopla.

4. The Ice Storm- Tobey and Katie don't get together. I wanted some sex.

5. The Godfather Part II- Michael V. Gazzo sings at the wedding in the beginning. To quote another Coppola movie- "the horror, the horror."
"Be yourself, unless you suck."- Joss Whedon
