Let me be first to mention the Trunk Scene from Out of Sight.
It's hard to pick a popular definitive scene. For example, I love when Andi McDowell learns about James Spader's habit in in Sex, Lies. The was the iced tea almost spills from her glass. Or these two moments from Erin Brockovich...
Then comes a shot that still confounds me, one of the years very best. We watch Julia Roberts as Erin get into her beat up junker of a car. There are no edits as she pulls into traffic, and as she crosses the intersection… BAM! Her car is smacked so hard it spins around. Nothing about it looks computer generated. A truly startling moment.
There’s a great moment with Marg Helgenberger, playing the mother who refused to sell her land. We hear her kids playing in an above ground swimming pool behind her. We don’t give it much thought until Helgenberger registers the potentially lethal effects of the deadly chemicals in her water. Suddenly it becomes a scene of tremendous horror as she rushes her kids out of the pool.
Those are two scenes that speak more to me, and I think any list of great Soderbergh scenes will depend on the viewer.
Except for that trunk scene. It stands out like putting The Professional on a Top 5 Hitman Movies list.
