No wonder you didn't like the comments about Baby Jane!

A lot of the differences in our lists (apart from films I haven't seen (=28!)) are for films I haven't seen in the last year, like Niven, Hopper and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Your 1 and 2 are films that have been in my queue for most of the past year, but never seem to get here, not exactly obscure either one! Might be time to buy them (god forbid!).

Disagreements? (not that it matters but...) Masina seemed to be channelling Chaplin in that film. I think Nicholson gave a Witches of Eastwick era performance in The Shining, which to me indicates Kubrick didn't mind much what his actors were doing.

Mitchum's Max Cady would be on my list if I had posted it later, I might add it to my pM'ed list and quite high.

Overall, I think we agree on what good acting is.

Are you sure you're not confusing it with La Strada?  One of the reasons I'm not very fond of LS is Masina's Chaplinesque performance.

I think Nicholson gave a Witches of Eastwick era performance in The Shining, which to me indicates Kubrick didn't mind much what his actors were doing.

A famous Kubrick quote in regards to acting (and I believe it was in reference to The Shining): "Real is good... interesting is better."  I know it's an over-the-top portrayal, but that's what I love about it.  Duvall's is even more contentious, and that one almost made my list (Nicholson was a last-minute replacement as I was reviewing clips).

Mitchum's Max Cady would be on my list if I had posted it later, I might add it to my pM'ed list and quite high.

I considered it, along with Night of the Hunter.  I'm second-guessing my choice now, actually.  I can't say I've ever disliked Mitchum in anything, even His Kind of Woman, a movie that in general rubs me the wrong way.

Overall, I think we agree on what good acting is.

Re- Kubrick- I think real is better personally and the melo(extra)drama the actor brings still comes from something honest within them, hence Bette Davis being so good. I put Nicholson's Five Easy Pieces on mine, he was an immense actor but there was a balance between barking like a dog (which he does historically in FEP) and subtlety.
Re- Mitchum. I had an interest in actor biographies a long time ago and what I took from his was that being a working class guy meant he viewed acting as purely 'a job' so I see some of his performances in that light- just getting a job done. Shows how a director is the other side of the acting performance, making the guy work (hence why Lumet is as important to Newman and Finch as the actor is).

Decided to make a video of my list as well. This is part 1 (100-51). Enjoy!

I do apologize for some of the poorer quality clips that I had to get from YouTube due to having the Blu-ray of the film or not owning it.

Apologize?  Hell, yours looks 20 times better than mine.  Any tips?  I was looking for something that would just rip a selected clip from a DVD, but couldn't find anything.  Since I didn't want to rip entire DVDs and then edit down a massive video file, I just went the easy YouTube route.

Your list runs the gamut from performances on my own list, to performances that almost made my list, to performances I really respect, tp performances I'm lukewarm about, to performances I find overrated, to performances I can't stand.  Rather evenly distributed among those categories too (except for a few I haven't seen).

To rip I used MacX DVD Ripper (which is free). Granted that is exclusive to Mac, so hopefully you have one. It lets you plug-in an in and out time for ripping. That way you do not need to rip the whole thing. It's very easy to use.
