Bond marathon=bad idea

I love the bond movies as great escapism, but really, they're the same movie over and over again.

Hence the word "if".

I agree--bad idea.  A 'Bond-influenced' marathon would be more interesting:

Austin Powers
Shaft
The Hunt for Red October
XXX
The Nude Bomb
Inspector Gadget

Hmm. I like the influenced idea. I don't know if I would subject our fearless hosts to the crap that is XXX. Xander Zone? Give me a break. On the other hand, there was Sam Jackson...

I like the idea though.

DO A BOND MARATHON! A suggestion for choices:

Adam and Sam, you should start with

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE - the straightest of them all without any gadgets and still close to the book!

then GOLDFINGER because this is where the classic Bond formula was found and established which lay the foundation for all the Bondfilms until the latest reinvention of the series with CASINO ROYALE.

ON HER MAJESTY´S SECRET SERVICE has to be in there - the first time they allowed Bond to be a little more civil - he is getting married. If Connery had done this one, OHMSS had been the best Bond ever possibly.

To cover Roger Moore´s Bond territory they certainly should watch THE SPY WHO LOVED ME - one of the most successful Bondfilms ever, an action classic and one of the 70ies´ biggest box office hits, Moore´s personal best liked Bondfilm and due to John Glen maybe the pinnacle of what one could do in cinema with a Bondfilm. (And by the way - it´s just great fun and never gets boring, even after all these years!)

Certainly LICENSE TO KILL should be next to include Dalton. It´s the first attempt to leave common grounds and make Bond more personal, dangerous and less womanizing. It´s a great film, yet the audience did not respond well. Anyway...

Finally to close out with Brosnan - in my opinion the best Bond since Connery until Daniel Craig blew all of them, including our beloved Sean skyhigh out of the water and into oblivion (I AM SERIOUS) - Adam and Sam should watch THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, the third attempt to varify the formula a bit more...the opening sequence is over 20 minutes, that was new! And to close it all they should at least watch the first half of DIE ANOTHER DAY to witness how well it all started for the anniversary Bondfilm and how terribly ridiculous the series turned itself into when Bond travels to Iseland in the second act...this is where Adam and Sam, to prevent them from lapsing from faith should switch off their dvd-players.

It would be a great marathon! So DO IT guys since you are no Bond enthusiasts...but it is a phenomenon, so come and taste it...

@Dracula

Well, the same movie over and over again?

That might be true for 70 percent of them...but as I wrote in my recent reply there are differences that add some evolution to the Bond series...and I´d love to know what Adam and Sam...and also you reply to that after watching those films again.

Also another idea: Evolution of action movies...to see how much Bond influenced modern action cinema and what reinventions like DIE HARD, THE BOURNE IDENTITY and also CASINO ROYALE did for the genre...

just a thought!

I love the idea of a bond influenced marathon.

It would be great to include a Matt Helm movie in there.

Dean Martin was a ridiculously laid back spy.

I think a Bond marathon would inspire some great, silly discussions and arguments between Adam and Sam.  I would recommend:

Dr. No - first and essential introduction
Thunderball - criminally underrated
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - great story
The Spy Who Loved Me - essence of Roger Moore
License to Kill - one of the best, with Dalton playing it straight
Goldeneye - this isn't great, but does offer interesting counterpoint

That's it.  I don't expect a Bond marathon, but it's a fun topic.

Cheers!

I did a little Bond marathon myself over the weekend.  Mostly I was too lazy to change the channel once the marathon started and besides, it seemed like an appropriate way to spend a Saturday.  It really made me think about what Casino Royale was missing.  I know it's a origin story, but I had much more fun with these older films than I did with Royale.  Here were the most noticeable differences:

1. No action happens unless a girl is in a bikini.
2. They play Baccarat.
3. They're very, very funny.

WOAH! I controlled F this whole mother, and I spotted NO A View to a Kill!??! What's up!?

Goldfinger, from Russia with Love, and Dr. No are givens. I highly suggest Moonraker. maybe Octopussy in its place.

I haven't seen many.

I'm not sure a Bond marathon would hold up, but I like the idea of the "influenced" marathon.

Oh, and I will maintain until my dying day that On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the best Bond film, and I'm not alone.
