Love the list, sdedalus. Did you watch all those Satyajit Ray films over the past year?

Re: women direcors - Last year 5 women directors (Denis, Varda, Bigelow, Ramsay and Campion) made the list. It's a small number but it's something. Am hoping that they'll stay on the list. Ramsay, Campion, Elaine May and Lucile Hadzihalilovic are probably at a disadvantage because of their short filmographies.

I'm currently watching films by Teresa Villaverde who is quite likely to make my list. I want to try and watch more Leni Riefenstahl before the due date. The clips I saw on The Story of Film series look very promising. I also want to try and watch some Vera Chytilova.

I am not a big enough fan but I suspect that Kelly Reichardt and Mira Nair have a shot at least. Maybe Andrea Arnold as well.

@Bondo: Tsai isn't female. As per Sean's disclaimer up top, none of the female directors made his Top 100 list.

I think the hard thing about female directors is that they're are just so many male directors in comparison. That doesn't mean they're aren't some great ones out there, but for ever Denis and Sophia Coppola, there's 100-150 male directors.

I know right now my list only has a couple of female directors.

Ah, I misread and thought the 6 out of 100 with May was implying it was 5 out of 100 presently. My bad.

Watching those lists I think to myself that I need to look up more films directed by women. And write about them. How else is anything going to change?

It's a male world though, that's for sure. Women and Hollywood recently wrote a post with heavy crticism against The Hollywood Reporter. I don't know if she's right about the criticism of the selection. But it certainly gave me food for thought, especially the rather arrogant answers.

For Criticker users, this collection lists 1940 films by female directors... although many are co-director credits and some of those (Werckmeister Harmonies) are pretty debatable.

My favorites:

An Angel at My Table
Innocence
Jellyfish
Sita Sings the Blues
La Bonheur
36 Chowringhee Lane
Wendy and Lucy
The Hitch-Hiker
The Loveless
Orlando

The first two made my top 100 list, but I'm not crazy about Campion's other work and Hadzihalilovic sadly hasn't done any other features.

Claire Denis, Kelly Reichardt and Catherine Breillat are three more directors I've only seen two films by.  Only one by Lynne Ramsay, Maya Deren, Sally Potter and Mira Nair (and Nina Paley, who's only made one feature).

Denis and Varda are the ones most likely to make next year's list for me.

Worm, I watched those three Ray films this summer, they're still the only three I've seen though.

A rough top 10 films directed by women:

1. Sita Sings the Blues
2. Jeanne Dielman
3. Cleo from 5 to 7
4. Orlando
5. Morvern Callar
6. Meek's Cutoff
7. The Heartbreak Kid
8. Bright Star
9. 35 Shots of Rum
10. The Hitch-hiker
