Lovely list flieger. I haven't finalized mine yet but it looks like we'll have around 15 in common. Love seeing Elaine May!

Terence Davies
Shirley Barrett
Sara Driver
Seijun Suzuki
Amy Heckerling
Tran Anh Hung

You need to school your son and get him to watch Distant Voices and The Long Day Closes especially the latter.  I admit his short film trilogy can grate; though, I love their bare emotional honesty.

I saw Love Serenade because of my Miranda Otto crush.  Want to see more.

Haven't seen a Sara Driver.

Didn't know of your Suzuki admiration.  Ditto Heckerling and Tran.

Tran made my list at #51 and thinking how Kechiche made my list with love for 2 films then Tran definitely should've been in the top 50.  At least I've tried to spread the love for Vertical Ray of the Sun.  That's a little consolation for me, I guess.

Top Directors List

I felt that my list is distinctly different than last year.  I've been introduced to a number of excellent directors this year (Powell and Pressburger, Mike Leigh, for example).  Thanks to the FS troupe who prodded me toward these wonderful films.

This year, I felt that I could only include directors that I have at least two four star films on my overall list, and they had to be distinct as a director-- I needed to be able to recognize their work.  In the list below, I listed all five- and four-star ratings each director had.  But, as is clear, a director can have a number of high-rated movies, but that doesn't necessarily make them a personal favorite.  There has to be qualities of their films I personally enjoyed above others.

Finally, I gave each director a nickname that is a theme or style that is distinct in many of their films.

Ah, good old Wheat & Trees. Ever try his cereal? Don't. It's very bland. (And sappy.)

I gave it a 3/5, so it didn't qualify.  For Miyazaki and Spielberg, I was looking for excuses NOT to list films.  The lists are so long.  Even so, with Miyazaki, his films are like children-- how could I not include them all?  Alas, I couldn't.

You'll get Hitch eventually. Once that stubborn resistance of youth falls away. btw it's "Surprise or Suspense"

The first word I put was "suspense", and then I settled on "surprise".  But you are certainly right:  it's either/or/and/both.
