James Bond 007: Best Director
« on: November 07, 2011, 04:47:16 PM »
There have only been 5 directors in the series to only direct one film, Sam Mendes will be the 6th unless of course he goes on to direct another one. Peter Hunt (OHMSS), Roger Spottiswoode (TND), Michael Apted (TWINE), Lee Tamahori (DAD) and Marc Forster (QOS) are the 5. The other 17 films in the series were directed by 5 different men. Which did the best job with the series?

Terence Young (3) - Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Thunderball

Guy Hamilton (4) - Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun

Lewis Gilbert (3) - You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker

John Glen (5) - For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill

Martin Campbell (2) - GoldenEye, Casino Royale

I'm going to go with Not John Glen.
Kevin: Yes, why does there have to be evil?

Supreme Being: I think it has something to do with free will.

Verna: I suppose you think you raised hell.

Tom: Sister, when I've raised hell you'll know it.

Well, he made three of the ones I like, but yea, his other two are terrible.

It's funny - the other three barely even registered with me.  Octopussy and View just jumped right out and dragged his rep down like a stone.

It's like voting for a political candidate. I'm not enthusiastic about any of them. I will use my space to mention Peter Hunt who edited Goldfinger and From Russia With Love before directing On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Please tell me there will be a poll for 2nd Unit Directors and Stunt Coordinators so people like Simon Crane, Gary Powell, Vic Armstrong, Ian Sharp, Dan Bradley etc. will get some notice.

I feel you. They are two of the worst.

I went with Guy Hamilton. I think his campy style worked well for the era of Bond he worked in.

I'll have to cast my vote for TY, though it was a tough decision. I suppose MC would be #2, but the begin the series and have three solid films is a great accomplishment. If Campbell had one more good one I would probably vote for him.

The idea just crossed my mind. Not to disrespect the other people involved in making these movies, but few are as important as the stunt coordinators and second unit people.

I'm on it. Got to go to work soon, so the poll might not appear just right now, but it'll come.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

As much as I freaking love what Campbell did, and I do, I have to go with the man who helmed the originals, three movies that are among my favourites in the entire series: Terence Young.
