"Do I believe the world's still there? Is it still out there? … Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I'm no different … now … where was I?" Filmmaker Rian Johnson joins Adam to consider Lars von Trier and the apocalypse, as they discuss the Danish filmmaker's latest, "Melancholia." Plus, a countdown of their Top 5 Movies That Begin With the End, and Adam's conversation with Michel Hazanavicius, the writer/director of one of the best films of 2011, "The Artist."

A decade later, and that line still gives me chills.

I'm still only halfway through the show but I just HAVE to say that I loved the discussion about Melancholia - enthisiastic and insightful. Really great. You never know about such a movie; as you said, it's not everyone's cup of tea. I was relieved to find out that you shared my love.

I disagree on one point though. You compared it to Tree of Life, and put ToL higher. My order is the reversed; Melancholia will come out on top with a wide margin.

Anyway - just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated it. It was a great choice to pick a guest host who actually liked the movie and the director overall.

Oh, and one more thing: It was a good call not to make this be about von Triers behavior at Cannes. It's been discussed enough. You had the right focus.

I had a quick line in my setup and that was all I was going to say about it... But then decided to nix that too. Has zero bearing on the film.

  • They don't think it be like it is, but it do.
Adam, did you have any gripes with the film? It was an excellent discussion of Melancholia, but a bit one-sided (which I don't mind, because I really enjoyed the film as well).

I didn't have any gripes that I could really articulate in any detail... I mean, it's von Trier... it's mostly bonkers. I wasn't so entranced by it that I can't wait to see it again or think it's among the year's very best, but it's memorable and aesthetically and intellectually interesting.

Adam, sorry to keep coming at you with this women's POV thing, but I really can't help it with VonTrier.  I have not seen nor will I be likely to see this one, although I do love both Charlottes.  I just so don't like Von Trier's focus on doing all he can do to humiliate, downgrade, mutilate and torture the women in his movies that I won't even try to watch any more.  Just knowing that Charlotte Rampling was in The Night Porter and that one of the character's names is also the title of a Marquis De Sade novel was plenty for me.  Yes, I'm sure Von Trier is a filmmaker to be reckoned with...but no thanks.  I reckon not.  Not for me and not for many women like me who find this stuff offensive and downright creepy.

Interesting. I haven't seen much LVT, but I thought Antichrist was more of an attack on men.
