Speaking of dull, I imagine Bon Iver is too new for this list or something.

They aren't newer than Grizzly Bear though.

In terms of the weird moniker of "hipster", Portishead is a strange choice. I never thought if as hipster ever. It is great though.
I actually consider a lot of movies to be life-changing! I take them to my heart and they melt into my personality.

What is the proper length for an album?

Recognizing that some great albums can be very different lengths, perhaps the question should be asked, how do we know that an album is too long, or too short?

For me, it usually has more to do with quality and flow. As long as an album is able to be consistent and feel like each song contributes, I don't think the length matters.

Don't think I ever thought and album was too short, but I can think of more than a few albums I thought would be better if they lost a few tracks.

The flow is very important to me, too.  Some of my favorite albums are actually portions of albums that have a continuity... until they go a certain distance and then it's gone.  I've had albums that would have been perfect if it were cut by three songs.  But then I would have felt cheated because the album was "short".  On the other hand, I've had "double" albums are are perfect... the flow is consistent, but it was still too long.  Not that I didn't appreciate all the tracks, eventually.  But it seems that my attention is only good for up to an hour of music at a time, and then I want to move on.  Perhaps to other music, but I'm still moving on.

How often is it that an artist can have a single artistic vision that lasts for a full 50 minutes?  Isn't that pretty rare?  Or is it my attention that is lost?

Tell it to Wagner.

Wagner would fall under my definition of "rare", I think.
