What is your favorite cover?  (it has to be a cover you prefer over the original)

Inspired by listening to Lorde's version of Everybody Wants to Rule the World which is so far superior to Tears for Fears version.

When making a top albums of all times list, does anyone included any greatest hits or compilation albums?

I'd probably throw a soundtrack in because it is created with some artistic intent, even if the songs weren't created originally for it. Greatest hits albums feel more like a cheat though. Still, by excluding greatest hits albums, I lose a lot of older artists where that is my main point of engagement.

My dilemma exactly. To be specific, my main issue is with Leadbelly, where as his songs are merely collected in albums by year, thus technically all his albums are compilations.

Include any collection you want, but especially in cases where the artist recorded in a period that pre-dates the album era; technology (12 inch record going 33.3 rpm) introduced in the 50s established a framework that at some point in the 60s came to define what an album is (12 songs , 45 to 60 minutes long). A definition that, by the way, again because of new technology, pop music in the process of abandoning, if we haven’t already.

I don't include compilations/greatest hits unless they are collections of songs not released on albums.  For example, the songs on New Order's Substance and The Smiths' Louder Than Bombs are all exclusively from singles.  So if your Leadbelly songs were never released on an album format, I'd include the collection(s).

I don't include them on my yearly top 50 lists, but you could make an excuse for it in an all-time list, if you feel it represents a particular artist's career well.

There's too many great ones to narrow it down to "favorite", but this is one of my faves (that I prefer over the original):

plus, just about every cover Mark Kozelek ever did, especially the entire album of AC/DC covers
