Honestly, there isn't shit this week. No proper New Music FLYday tbh. Straight garbage.
The Tekashi 6ix9ine, one imagines, I could go on about the artist himself, but it's a boring album that is so pop rap in its sound that even the two singles, which I liked leading up to it, don't help it.
The Big Sean album, Detroit 2 or whatever it's called, is over an hour and absolutely abysmal. Big Sean isn't a good rapper to begin with, but this one...damn, it's a CINECAST!ing drag. Even the Thugger feature on the one song can't completely save that one. Then there's some 9 minute long song with a bunch of features that are hit and miss, but people like because Eminem is on it, I guess. Just CINECAST!ing poop. Arguably the best part is the Anderson .Paak song or the Dave Chapellle skit, and given how I feel about Anderson for the most part is saying a lot.
The only other thing I listened to, which was good, was the new Bizzy Banks project, GMTO Volume 1. But even this kind of didn't completely hit for me because I've been getting more and more in to Sleepy Hallows releases this year and this, while a bit different, is still in that subgenre and doesn't hit quite as hard, but the songs are solid to strong and I wish it hit in a week where I wasn't both overworked and soured on the other things I listened to.
Here's hoping next weekend is better. Didn't even really listen to any singles.
I tried Tekashi when you mentioned him before. But goodness, I can't even...Who is it intended for? I'm definitely not the intended audience.
With The LOX, I started up top with Gave It To Em, and that shit is HOOOOOOOOT. Oh man. Then I saw Large Professor did a track, so I skipped to that one, Think of The LOX, and oh my goodness, you can say it takes you back to the 90's, but The LOX never really made 90's style hip-hop in the 90's, got caught up in the growing commercialism. Just those two tracks are worth the price of admission. Only disappointment is no Premo, but I think I'll be alright. (Recognize is probably my most-listened to single hip-hop track, though. Top 10 for sure.)
Even when I don't comment, I always read the whole FLYday, so looking forward to the next!
I always get excited for a "super deluxe edition" of an album I love. However, right now I'm listening to The Beatles' "White Album", with four entire discs of demos and outtakes, and I realized... I don't give a damn any more. B-sides, great. Dance/extended remixes, great. But I don't need to hear shittier versions of my favorite songs. I kind of feel the same way about live versions, though occasionally there will be a really excellent performance.
It's very similar to how I feel about Blu-Rays... when a disc has a ton of extras, the initial excitement of "all this content!" quickly starts to feel like a chore to get through it all. And yet, NOT consuming it feels wasteful somehow, like I'm passing up a privileged opportunity.
What a complicated relationship I have with media.
So, is "super deluxe edition" like a thing a company does, or just a generic term? I will say, Elliott Smith/his estate/Kill Rock Stars has dropped some deluxe anniversary editions of Either/Or and, recently, his self-titled album. Both have had some great live stuff. He's one of the few artists I can feel in his recorded performances; normally, recorded performances, whether videotaped or not, don't do much to reach me. I prefer music videos and BEING THERE. But Smith is one of those artists his big fans can feel possessive of, and I have to actively guard against that, because his songs have saved me. Any bit of recorded music from him will be consumed by me. But generally, I have no interest in deluxe versions of albums, I want the core tracks. Only a few bands have really interesting B-sides (Radiohead probably the best in this area) or demos (Joy Division is the one band I can think of that had some great pieces in this area, also crucial with the dearth of recorded material). It takes me long enough to just listen through The White Album, probably something I do yearly, and I don't see how I'd ever get into the cutting room floor stuff.
