1974: Absolutely fantastic year. To wit: The Godfather: Part II, Chinatown, Hearts and Minds, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, A Woman Under the Influence, The Conversation, Edvard Munch, Young Frankenstein, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, The Phantom of Liberty, Alice in the Cities, Lacombe, Lucien, Celine and Julie Go Boating, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Cockfighter, The Yakuza, Vincent, François, Paul and the Others, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, Lancelot du Lac, Phantom of the Paradise, Female Trouble, and California Split. Only thing keep this score from being a 10 is that I'd rather start with an earlier year. Score: 9

1979: Pretty strong year. Really good diversity. Score: 7

My reasoning for 1974 and 1979.

1979 also the appeal of being the most recent year that doesn't overlap with the brackets or modern memory. Some key films from 1979:

Apocalypse Now
Alien
Life of Brian
Stalker
Manhattan
Being There
Tale of Tales
Camera Buff
Vengeance is Mine
Best Boy
The Marriage of Maria Braun
The Tin Drum
All That Jazz
The Warriors
Christ Stopped at Eboli
The Muppet Movie
Nosferatu the Vampyre
Over the Edge
Killer of Sheep
The China Syndrome
My Brilliant Career
...And Justice for All.
The Black Stallion
Time After Time
Woyzeck
The Jerk
Mad Max
The Great Santini
Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Here's the poll for the year.

pixote is having undue influence.

I voted 1972 and 1975 as the top two years from the decade. From the Collection:

1972=The Godfather, Solaris, 1776, Aguirre and for competition in Best Short La Cabina
1975=Jaws, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Salo and Bollywood champion Sholay.

pixote is having undue influence.

Sometimes, when I'm feeling immodest, I like to think that it's due.

Don't sleep on 1973 (lumpy): BADLANDS, CHARLEY VARRICK, THE CRAZIES, DAY FOR NIGHT, THE DAY OF THE JACKAL, THE EXORCIST, THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE, THE LAST DETAIL, THE LONG GOODBYE, LE MAGNIFIQUE, MEAN STREETS, PAPILLON, SAVE THE TIGER, SCARECROW, SERPICO, SOYLENT GREEN, THE STING, WESTWORLD.

1973: There are some great standouts here, but the overall trend for 1973 seems to have been for the films not to have been as good as I hoped they'd be. Score: 4

Badlands, Charley Varrick, Day for Night, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Mean Streets, The Last Detail, and Serpico would all fall into that group for me. I'd be happy for everyone to watch Day of the Jackal and Battles Without Honour and Humanity, though, and I'd be excited to rewatch The Exorcist, The Long Goodbye, and Scenes from a Marriage; and to discover Scarecrow, The Crazies, Le Magnifique, The Mother and the Whore, The Holy Mountain, Emperor of the North Pole, and Turkish Delight. Yeah, my score of 4 was too low.

Just going by the two years from which I've seen the least movies: 70 and 71.
