1982:
Khan!!!! lol. This year seems dominated by really entertaining but overly familiar movies: Blade Runner, The Thing, Fitzcarraldo, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, First Blood, Poltergeist, The Secret of NIMH, Tootsie, The Verdict, and the two big acting behemoths, Gandhi and Sophie's Choice. Still, there are a few films I'd be really excited to discover, especially The State of Things, Boat People, Moonlighting, One from the Heart, and Five Element Ninja; and, to a lesser extent, Tol, Pink Floyd The Wall, Missing, Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Victor Victoria, The Return of Martin Guerre, The World According to Garp, and, I dunno, maybe The Dark Crystal. I'd be curious but very hesitant to revisit Fanny and Alexander and The Night of the Shooting Stars, and much more interested in instead giving another look to The Draughtsman's Contract, The Last Unicorn, or The Man from Snowy River, honestly. And I'd look forward to the Documentary battle between, perhaps, The Weavers, Koyaanisqatsi, Burden of Dreams, The Atomic Cafe, and Say Amen, Somebody. But the presence of My Favorite Year here scares me because it's supposed to be good but the few scenes I've viewed from it have been almost embarrassing and maybe encompass everything frightening about focusing on the 80s.
Score: 7

1986:
I'm probably going to be biased for Top Gun's year, but let's see how this goes. Okay, yeah, I think this list of films pretty much speaks for itself: Aliens, Platoon, Stand by Me, Castle in the Sky, Jean de Florette, Manon of the Spring, The Sacrifice, Hannah and Her Sisters, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Blue Velvet, Down by Law, The Name of the Rose, My Friend Ivan Lapshin, The Fly, Hoosiers, A Better Tomorrow, Salvador, Sid & Nancy, Big Trouble in Little China, The Mosquito Coast, The Terrorizers, The Mission, Sherman's March, Peking Opera Blues, Mona Lisa, The Assault, Star Trek IV, The Hitcher, Manhunter, Highlander, Mauvais sang, The Great Mouse Detective, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, The Horse Thief, and Matador. Although there's maybe nothing there that I'm super duper excited about, I'd still be pretty happy to watch/revisit any of those, and that's kind of impressive.
Score: 7

My reasoning for 1982 and 1986 ... but I'm reluctant to focus on the 80s, so I'm just going to go with 1982 for now.

1988 would be worth it just for the epic anime fight between Totoro and Fireflies.
