Caught up with Brooklyn 99 in advance of the new season. It's such a good show, and kinda cool how such a silly show can still get some critique of the criminal justice system in there as well.

Nailed It! is a lot of fun, in part because of the shortness of the episodes and in part because I love Nicole Byer.

And I'm in the middle of the first episode of Big Mouth, which is great and I don't know why it took me so long to watch this when it has so many of my favorite people in it.

I really didn't care for the one episode of Big Mouth I saw.

However, I am loving Steven Universe.  I really don't know what to think of a show where the first season has 51 episodes.  The development is slow and periodic, but each episode is only 15 mintues long, so it moves fast.  After about the first twenty episodes, the show shows that it can be serious, which increases the level of comedy as well.  I'm not caught up enough with the show to understand most of the memes posted about it, but I'm binging it as fast as I can.

You know there's a ton of good TV out there when I'm surprised how low some series are ranked, but then can't argue with a single one of your Top 10 choices.

A pretty good historical recreation experiment type of show. A year in the life, 1870's style, on the Canadian prairie. It's pretty legit as these sort of shows go. Kind of an outlier for a reality show in that it isn't highly polished or forcing narratives in the editing room. The show starts right at the auditioning process and is pretty candid about all the behinds the scenes logistics to make the experience as real as it possibly can be. It's just a nice interesting watch. You may be able to watch it here. I found it on Prime.  It's not about doing something extreme, or preposterous challenges, or artificial deadlines for tv sake, it's just people giving it a go. It's amazing how much drama actually happens in the show without anyone actually having to create it.

There are other series by the same producer. Quest for the Bay - 1200km trip from Winnipeg to Hudson's bay, recreating a trip that fur traders would have done in that era. Klondike: Quest for Gold and Quest for the Sea. I'm going to watch those next.

I love these sort of shows, provided they aren't a bunch of reality show stupidness. Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm, Wartime Farm, Tudor Monastery Farm and Secrets of the Castle are all super interesting if you can find 'em. Ruth Goodman is great.

Figured I'd jot down my thoughts as I revisit ST:TNG season 2.

Did you only start writing down your thoughts on TNG at season 2 Martin? I don't see anything before then, but I might not be looking in the right place. Even finding this was hard enough. :))

I just went through that first season again and enjoyed myself. Almost all of the episodes had something going for them. Except of course the holodeck episode. I feel like season one must be goriest season because there's an episode with an alien bursting out of someone's stomach. Very uncharacteristic of TNG.

I have mixed feelings about losing Tasha Yar. She has some good moments. I liked seeing her and Worf bond over combat stuff. Had she carried on in the series it would've been a nice friendship to see deepen. Kind of in the same way Data and Geordi bond, or Troi and Crusher. On the other hand, with Worf filling her shoes, I think it is more interesting to watch him (a Klingon) have to restrain his aggressive impulses at his post. Tasha Yar was quick to be suspicious, and always advised caution, but there was not really a struggle there.

Tasha's death was abrupt (for outside reasons), and that's a shame because after it happened the show struggled to capitalize on the emotions of it. If was like cashing out a investment after a single day in the market... it hadn't had time to grow, so there was nothing to show for it. Had Tasha's death been planned from the get go, Worf's relationship to her could have been developed and there would be more fallout. Her Funeral scene was okay. Nice in that it's a chance to stop and reflect on the characters... but also strange.

I'm trying to think if there was a stand out low point or high point in the season. Nothing is coming to mind really. Well... except maybe Picard making Riker dock the saucer manually. After it's done even Data gives him an "oh shit, he's good" look. 8)
