Top 100 Books 2012 discussion thread
« on: August 20, 2012, 01:31:03 PM »
HERE ARE THE OFFICIAL RULES:

1. All books are up for consideration. Fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, books of poetry and short stories, plays.
2. Series will be put on the list in one spot. This means that Harry Potter will take a spot, not Prisoner of Azkaban.
3. Even comic strips are up for consideration. The full run of Calvin and Hobbes or The Far Side would take one spot each, if they get the votes.
4. You can submit a ranked ballot of 50 books to me in PM form starting right now!
5. The deadline for submission is the November 14th . The countdown will be some short time later, TBD.
6. Please ask other questions in this thread or send me a PM.

Scoring looks like this, so take this into account when you rank:
1: 10 points
2-5: 8
6-10: 6
11-15: 5
16-20: 4
21-30: 3
31-40: 2
41-50: 1

We've got new people and read more, so after two years I think it's about time to update our list of the best 100 books of all time ever in existence and other dimensions. With all that in mind, I'd like to get a list of people interested in contributing to the list so that we can figure out the best voting method. Accordingly, if you could post in this thread with a comment saying that you'll compile a list as soon as possible we can get this thing rolling. Here's the 2010 list and the 2008 list.

We've lost some people and gained others, so there's a lot of potential for big changes this year. There's a certain book or series of books that is sure to make its first appearance on the list.

50 or 30? Do you like the tiered ranking system or just a straight rank (top spot would get 30 or 50 points depending on how many we decide to do, 2nd spot would get 29 o 49)?

Tiered ranking ... because I don't like my fiftieth favorite book fifty times more than my number one favorite book. And I think a point system that drastic really skews the list is a way that doesn't really reflect consensus.

(Oh, and I'd prefer to see lists of 50.)

You make a good argument. Bondo used this format for his Animated Movies list. Are there any changes you (the general you) would make to it?

30

Just because I don't think I could come up with many more than thirty that I deeply dig.

(But that's a really selfish answer, as I'm sure there are plenty of people here who could. Not to mention that "50" is such a nice round number.)

You don't have to submit the full 50 if we go that direction. I know some submitted only 10 for the Animated List and others did the same for our previous book list. If we have enough people that will be able to fill 50 slots I think that's a good direction to go in.

Oh, now you're saying I'm not up to the full fifty?! I'll show you! Put me down for fifty!
