General Comic Book/Graphic Novel Thread
« on: September 27, 2012, 05:03:29 PM »
So one of the things I got into over the past however long it's been is comics. As in crazy into.

I read through a lot of stuff, such as:

Y the Last Man-Great writing, but I don't like any of the character's it's okay.
Mouse Guard-Really like this series. Very minimal. Reminds me of Redwall.
Atomic Robo-All ages fun about a robot using science loosely to battle all sorts of absurdly ridiculous things.
The Walking Dead-Yea, it's legit. Probably the best thing I read.
The entire Hellboy series-Soo good. The art alone is amazing. Mignolia is the man.
The Goon-Swings wildly inbetween gaudy pulp and a harrowing horror epic. When it's great, it's spectacular, when it's not great, it's pretty trashy.
Invincible-From arc to art, it's one of the best superhero stories ever and then just kinda okay. Not digging the newer stuff.
Haunt-Terrible. Blergh.
Saga-Loving this. Just started but I think this could shape up to be something spectacular.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff.

Anyone else read anything new recently?

Locke and Key is one I want to check out for some point for sure.

I read the first arc of the new Animal Man and I thought it was pretty terrible. I like the idea of a superhero with a stable family life, but the characters just aren't that good and it feels like a nonstory at this point.

Also reading Morrison's JLA. Nothing deep, but it's a lot of fun and just the right amount of convoluted Morrison.

Having a tablet now has made it easy to get into comics/graphic novels. Have downloaded 100 bullets, Maus, we3, Alice in Sunderland. Started Maus and have enjoyed it thus far, really good personal and emotional writing and an interesting perspective to take on such tragic subject matter.

I've been reading way too many comics (monthly, few series I end up reading in trade paperback) from way too many writers/artists/companies since 2001. It's great to see other people finally getting into them. Wow, that is a lot. Here's a list of what I'm subscribed to right now:

Swamp Thing
Fatale
Saga
Fashion Beast

And next month I'll start getting:

The Legend of Luther Strode
Hellboy
BPRD

What do you think of Animal Man? I tried to get into it, picked up the first trade, but I thought it was really, really bad.  :-\

I liked it. Lemire has given the book this bizarre and horrific feeling that contrasts interestingly with the family dynamics. It certainly is a bit of a homage to Grant Morrison's run and it also interacts nicely with Swamp Thing.

It isn't for everyone though, I've seen some people disliking it for the reason you posted- that it sort of just drifts along and the characters aren't anything special. I suppose I just dig the wacky nature of it.

Yea, that was my main complaint, the characters were really generic. I did pick up the Animal Man/Swamp Thing crossover, which I thought was pretty good.

Speaking of Swamp Thing, can I recommend going back to the Alan Moore collections/ graphic novels. The American Gothic/Parliament of Trees/ Expulsion from Earth stories are "organically" inventive.
I used to encourage everyone I knew to make art; I don't do that so much anymore. - Banksy

I've been keeping an eye out for that, but DC has released so many versions and they're really weirdly priced right now, some volumes are $20, others $40 or more, so I'm having a hard time finding a way to consistently pick them all up at once. I read the very first run by creator Len Wein it and I liked those a lot.
