You are not allowed to search for posts in this forum.
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:47:41 AM »
Hi, sorry to introduce myself with a stone dumb question, but when I try to search for a topic using the search window I get the message in the subject line.  Surely this cannot be true.   I tried two browsers.

Because the search function crashes the forum, only admin/mods have search capability.

You can request a mod to search or use another method.

Welcome Ditcher.

So is it going to be like this forever? Because I have to admit this is quite a hassle.

Yep...believe me, you want this.  The alternative is not good.

The alternative is we prune the Forum rather than keeping every thread and post from the beginning of time around. I'm personally in favor of this; Candace is not.

It's kind of ironic that the size of the archive is what's actually preventing me from really accessing it then.
As for the pruning, is that step even inevitable? Is there a chance that, say, two or three more years of posts and threads will cause even more problems?
I have as many fond memories of this place as most of the old faces but I can't honestly say that I go back to read entire threads from 2008. As long as we could keep the important (mostly) movie-related threads around , I would gladly trade in my memories for a bit of comfort.

Pruning is wholesale, by year, not by subject.  Losing 2008, say, is losing ALL of 2008.

You can't just prune specific threads?  Some stuff I wouldn't miss at all (though others may differ):

What are you doing? (2007-2010) (24542 posts) - will we ever need to know what someone was doing 2 years ago?

Word Association (15443 posts) - locked thread, zero content

Obvious Post Whoring Thread (14272 posts) - locked thread, stupid thread

Movie Association Game (5024 posts) - locked thread, not much archival value

What Else Are You Watching/Listening To? (2007-2010) (7955 posts) - old thread, newer one exists

The Movie Game (2006-2010) (9303 posts) - old thread, newer one exists

What I Learned Today (13383 posts) - I really enjoy this thread, but you could dump posts older than, say, a year

So right there is about 80,000 posts you could wipe out.  I wouldn't think anyone would mind if you purged outdated threads in the "Local Events and Meetups" section either.

As I said, it's pruning by year.  That was my first question, too.

Adam and I have been over this ground with the IT guy.  It's all or nothing.
